Hiding From The Truth

Open (After The First Announcement)

The First Missionary Church, located at the center of town, is the oldest and largest building in Cabeza del Dragón, originally constructed by Spanish missionaries who first settled the area. The church has since gone through numerous renovations, although much of its original architecture has been preserved. The main doors open directly into a high-ceilinged interior area, primarily filled with two columns of pews. There are six stained glass windows flanking the pews three to a side, with a seventh larger window depicting the crucifixion of Christ located behind a fancifully-carved pulpit and above an ancient organ that despite the outward appearance of its old pipes is still capable of producing some bars. Through a door situated behind the main pulpit and alongside the organ is the priests' quarters, which is made up of a small combined kitchen and living area, study, and bedroom. There are many books lining the shelves of a bookcase, but there are gaps and disturbed dust where some texts have been removed.

Hiding From The Truth

((Kian Banks continued from i'm ltierally cryign and sshakin rihgt now.))

Kian was shocked over hearing what had happened on the announcement and he knew that he should have seen it coming. Of course, he was really upset to hear that some people had died and that the people who had killed them were now labelled as murderers. He knew that they would be out for blood or maybe they had killed once in self-defence. Not that it really mattered here now. As anyone could judge a book by its cover. He knew that feeling. But not as someone who could kill just like that. It was all still pretty unreal to him.

Maybe he was currently in denial and he didn't want to admit that a few of his classmates were willing to play by the rules of the Americans. It was kill or be killed. He knew that was the rules but there was no way in hell he would play by their rules. He couldn't even stomach the thought of ending someone's life just so that he could survive all the way to the end. To the end of what...? He had no idea.

He had managed to find the church by pure luck beforehand. By the time he had turned to see if Molly was behind him; he noticed that she was nowhere in sight and that Sebbo had not chased after him either. He didn't know if Sebbo not coming after him was a good idea or not. But he was definitely planning on looking for Molly. He couldn't believe that he had just lost his ally just like that.

He had been relieved to not hear Sebbo or Molly's names on the announcement as either a victim or a killer. He didn't want to have the guilt get to him if one of them had actually died because of him not staying behind to help finish up the fight.

Kian was sitting down at one of the pews that were near the front of the church and he had not bothered to go through the door that was behind the pulpit as he wanted to keep an eye on the main doors in a full eye view. The rapier was beside him on the pew with his bag and he glanced down at his hand that had been hurt in the fight. There was a bruise forming on it. But it was not as numb as it had been before.

After a while of just trying to relax, snacking on a package of crackers, drinking about three or four sips from a bottle of water and think of what to do next; Kian found his impulse of exploring around the church calling out to him and he forced himself to get up slowly. He let out a small yawn out of instinct and he covered his mouth for a moment. He realized that he was feeling exhaustion taking over and he didn't really want to sleep on a pew.

Kian felt his eyes focus on the door that was behind the pulpit and he knew that he had to search in there. What if there was someone in there without him knowing it? He needed to make sure that he was more cautious and he was not going to go in there without some protection. He slung the bag over his shoulder and he carefully picked up the rapier with his good hand.

He made his way over to the door and he found himself hesitating in front of it. He never normally felt himself feeling afraid to enter through a door. But now things were more different. Faith would have told him to suck it up and don't hold back. Right, he needed to be more willing to make more risks but hopefully without dying in the process.

He opened the door.

He noticed an odd smell in the air and he suddenly regretted opening the door. But now he took the first step and he couldn't stop himself from doing what he had wanted in the first place. He inhaled and then he exhaled slowly. He stepped into the room and he felt his heart dropping like a doomed glass of fancy wine.

There was a body there.

Calista's body.

"Uggh...!"

Kian let out a gagging noise and he covered his mouth with his sore hand, not really caring if it hurt him still. He was now regretting eating some food and he couldn't take his eyes off of the body. Who had Calista been killed by again? Lena something. Kian would have to take a more careful approach if he ever ran into her.

Kian didn't want to stay in there for any longer and he stepped back out. He was feeling a bit nauseous and he found himself holding back the urge to vomit. He didn't want to throw up at the sight of his first body.

His first body....

Creepy.

((Samuel Rosen continued from Burning Boats ))

The sunset cast long shadows over the horizon as Sam dragged himself up the stairs to the church, groaning with every painful step. Taking a deep breath, he stopped to survey the building in front of him. The quote about religion being the opiate of the masses immediately sprung to his mind. It was too bad Marx wasn’t speaking literally, because he really could have used some opiates right now. Hell, even an aspirin would be nice.

Sighing, he pushed open the wooden door, stepping into the sanctuary, immediately greeted with the sight of a fellow classmate standing at the door behind the pulpit. It took some straining, but he soon recognized the stocky figure as, er… something that ended with -ian. Yian? Under normal circumstances, this would have been great, seeing as from what he had heard Yian was normally a pretty nice guy. However, these weren’t normal circumstances. The young man in the room ahead of him had killed someone, and though the announcement said it was self defense, Sam wasn’t about to let his guard down around anyone. The incident with Oliver had shown that trusting people here was a mistake.

Sam hesitated for a moment as he considered his options. Despite the obvious dangers, he wasn’t really in a position to run away, and more importantly, he needed access to the medical supplies that Yian most certainly had in that bag of his. It was a gamble, but one that he really couldn’t refuse. Hopefully his classmate had managed to at least keep some of his sanity, and they’d be able to work together to get out of here. If not, well… he’d have to cross that bridge when he got there.

He called out in a hoarse voice as he limped down the aisle towards Yian, leaning on his cane for support.

“Hey…”

Sam paused for a moment, painfully aware of the wretched appearance he had put forward. With his clothes torn and blood smeared over his face, hands and clothes, he looked more like a zombie from a horror movie than a person. Commanding any respect from anyone was fairly unlikely in his state. If he came on as too aggressive, and requests he made could have the opposite effect. Taking the situation into account, he lowered his voice, which trembled slightly with exhaustion.

“You wouldn’t happen to have a first aid kit that I could use, would you?”

((Michelle White, continued from Morton’s Fork))

The walk had been in silence. All Michelle had done was follow Ashley, and all Ashley had done was keep moving forward towards somewhere on the map Michelle didn’t know and didn’t really bother asking. It seemed… slightly impossible, given the situation. What could she even say, given what had happened back at the house? What was there that she could even do to bridge the gap with Ashley now? She… didn’t really know. If there even was a way to fix this, she wouldn’t be able to find it now. Not while they were walking. Not while her effort was spent on just trying to keep up with her, make it to wherever they were going. Not while they were out in the open l- no. No. She couldn’t think like that. Even with what had happened, there was no way she was going to let herself think the way the Americans wanted her to think.

...At the very least, the thoughts from earlier had dissipated. The fact of what had happened felt more clear, less messy in her head now.

But that was because the thoughts had been replaced with something else. With the announcement she’d heard just earlier. The fact that there were more people in her class who were dead, the fact that they’d been killed by others, by people…

No. Couldn’t think about that now. Maybe when their journey had ended, maybe when there was some place they could rest, and-

Ashley stopped. Michelle stopped as well. They were at a place. A church, it seemed like. The silence continued for a moment, before:

“Maybe you should go in first?” Michelle said. Eye-contact between the two was nowhere in sight. “If there’s people in there, they might… freak out, if it’s me.”

((Ashley Pontecorvo continued fromMorton's Fork))

Ashley wasn't in a very jolly mood, like fucking obviously, but Michelle's hesitation - or rather, the reason for her hesitation - still made her snort. She was still boiling just underneath the surface, a gross mix of anger and guilt and still a little sprinkling of disbelief at what they had heard not long ago, but all the same.

"Listen," she said candidly, "Let's real talk for a minute." She stopped and turned to face Michelle in the fading light. Michelle wasn't looking at her, but all the same. "First of all, you're not armed. Second, being unarmed and all, you're about as threatening as like... a little dog. Like, maybe just a tiny bit, but most people could punt you across the room if you started any shit."

This probably wasn't coming out reassuring. Ashley was still hungry and sweaty like she had been all day, and patience was a long-gone thought. She wanted to stop being upset, or at least be more angry than upset, but the best she had been able to do since they fled the neighborhood was to keep moving and keep herself distracted.

"Look, what you gotta remember is the yanks are a bunch of fucking liars. Everything they said, they made it sound worse than it was." Like any way someone died at your hands was better than any other. Fuck. Ashley heaved an annoyed sigh and looked away too, then.

"Guh. Whatever, my point is- if there's trouble, I'll handle it. So try not to freak out."

She couldn't decide if she wanted trouble or not.

"...H...Huh...?"

Kian had needed a moment to register that there was another classmate there with him and it looked like the guy - Sam - was having a worst day than him. There was a lot of blood and it looked like the guy was about to collapse at any moment. Everything was just getting more worst and Kian wasn't sure how he was supposed to respond to the chaos that had been happening at such a fast speed. Right now, the only thing that Kian could do was help the guy out.

Kian let out a small breath to help relax himself in such a messy condition and he made his way over to Sam in a calmer stride. He had to make sure that Sam didn't see him as trouble and he wanted to show that Kian was not going to do anything to hurt him.

"Yes, I do have a first aid kit. But you should sit down as you really look like you can barely stand anymore." Kian said as he was pointing to the pew that was beside him and then he placed the rapier down on another pew so that it was out of the way. "I can see that you don't have your bag on you right now. Are you thirsty? Do you need some water too?"

Kian took his bag off of his back, then he unzipped his bag and he started to get out the first aid kit. He honestly had no idea what he was doing with it. But he had to do whatever he could to help out Sam.

A sudden surge of dizziness overcame Sam as he lurched towards the pew. He lowered himself down onto the wood, hissing in pain as his wound rubbed against the crude bandage he had made for himself. A few moments passed as he sat there, his head spinning, before he was able to gather his thoughts. Yian was being surprisingly helpful. Perhaps Sam was right to trust him after all.

Perhaps being the key word here.

Anyway, best not to delay this any longer. He gingerly lifted his leg, turning sideways as to lay it next to him. Taking a deep breath, he looked up at Yian, or at least the guy he was pretty sure was Yian, and began answering his questions.

“Yeah… my bag got stolen. A drink would be nice, but the first thing I need… is some antiseptic and some proper fucking bandages…”

Sam frowned. His response came out a lot more slowly than he would have liked. It was like there was a fog around his mind, a thick mist of pain preventing him from having easy access to his thoughts. Fuck…

He sighed. If he wanted to make it out of here, he needed to keep it together. Oliver may have screwed him up physically, but he wasn't going to let this place take over his mind. He couldn't, not if he was going to save everyone.

“I. Um. Okay.”

Ashley’s words hadn’t done a very good job at reassuring Michelle. In all honesty, they’d effectively done the opposite. Now the idea that Ashley hated her had a shred of truth to it and now the possibility that Ashley could abandon her was more than just a dark inkling in the back of her head. It felt stupid to think about that as the major issue she was making it — she knew that she could maybe go it alone, it was something that she’d need the strength to do at some point — but she couldn’t help it. They’d only spent a day with each other and it already felt like she needed Ashley to keep herself together.

She squeezed her eyes shut, for a bit. That was what she needed to do in general; keep it together. She had no clue as to how she’d do that now with everything that had happened, but… it was an idea. A plan.

No clue whether it was a good one or not, but there honestly hadn’t been very many things she’d had a clue about today.

“I’ll, um, I’ll do it.” Michelle said, moving closer to the church door, stopping just before she opened it. Honestly, either way she would have preferred someone else to be in front, but… no. She had to do this. If she wanted to do the things she needed to do — if there was any chance she could still do them, after today — she had to take charge. Be the leader. Stand and move forward for what she believed in. Right?

Right. She opened the door.

“Hey… um...” She said, taking a step forward before putting her hands up. “Is it safe to come in?”

Fuck, that wasn't what she'd meant to do. Talking things out calmly had never been Ashley's forte.

She grumbled incoherently to herself, moving to stick close to Michelle. "Who's in here?" She called loudly to follow Michelle's greeting. "We're friendly."

This was fucking stupid. This wasn't how you greeted people you'd known for most of your school years. It's safe, we're friendly, no killing intent here, no sir. It probably didn't even fucking mean anything, what they said. Everything was wrong, and the goddamn Yanks were milking it for all it was worth to make them mistrust and turn against each other.

Frustration welled up endlessly, and with her initial conviction gone, Ashley couldn't find a solution no matter how she looked at things.

Kian was no doctor but he knew that he had to take a proper look at Sam's injury and to make sure that it was not going to make Sam handicapped for the rest of their time here. If Sam was going to have a problem with walking.... Then what would happen if they got attacked by someone who was willing to hurt them? What if the same person who had wounded Sam showed up to finish the job?

"Alright, let me take a look at your injury, Sam. I need to see if it is going to be a problem for you or not." Kian said seriously before he touched around the area of where Sam had been injured and he felt Sam flinched a few times. There was a bit of blood on his hands and he was glad that he was not afraid of blood. He thought of Calista's body for a moment and he felt himself shiver involuntarily. He gave the other boy an apologetic look and then he felt a wave of relief slowly coming over him. "Good news, it is not as bad as you might think it is. Bad news, I am not a professional at first aid so please bare with me. Even if I might do a crappy job at this."

Kian was looking through the first aid kit to locate the antiseptic and as he was getting it out; he suddenly heard some voices near the entrance. Girls' voices. He glanced over to look at who had come in and he felt his heart drop into his stomach. Michelle who had killed someone called Morton and Ashley was with her as well. Kian had no time to worry about what Michelle had done as Sam was his responsibility right now and he had to concentrate on him.

"Hey, girls. Make yourselves at home. I'll get to you both shortly as Sam needs my help right now." He paused for a moment and he knew that there was a possibility that they did not know his name. "Oh, I'm Kian by the way if you don't know or don't remember me at all."

He then started to use the antiseptic on Sam.

Sam let out a yelp as the antiseptic touched his wound, the sudden flash of burning pain taking him by surprise. He clenched his teeth as the guy prodded at the deep gouge in his leg, each touch bringing a fresh burst of agony. It wasn't as bad as when he first got shot, of course, but it was pretty close. His fingers tightly gripped the side of the pew as he thought back to the first time he had ridden a roller coaster. It was a terrible experience, but the only thing he could do was hang on tightly and wait for it to be over. Obviously, this was much worse, but the same principle applied.

He took several deep breaths as he attempted to retain his composure, becoming acutely aware of the visitors that had just dropped in on him. He couldn't see them from where he was, and what little he heard of their voices didn't ring any bells. No reason not to be friendly, anyway. Kian didn't seem very alarmed, so there was no need for immediate concern. Sticking his hand up, Sam gave a quick wave before speaking in a somewhat strained voice,

“Hey, girls, sorry about the mess, but I'm… “

He hissed in pain before continuing.

“...currently in the middle of getting patched up by Kian, here. We'll be with you shortly.”

Having said his piece, he looked back at the guy who was currently trying his best to help him out. It was a good job that Sam hadn't said the wrong name out loud before Kian could identify himself. He had really lucked out by finding someone so useful, and it would be a shame to piss him off so early.

His head spinning, Sam laid back on the pew, staring at the church ceiling as Kian worked.

“Um. Okay.”

She stood there, in the doorframe, for a few seconds. Stared at Kian, before walking in, beckoning for Ashley to follow. The stress — the idea that this could still go wrong and that Kian and Sam could still draw issue with what she’d done — was still present, but now it felt weightless. Aimless. It was still there, but it didn’t quite know what to do, wasn’t quite sure whether it still had a place now that Kian and Sam had so quickly accepted the two of them.

She took a breath. Smiled. Supposed that Ashley was right, that there was nothing Michelle needed to worry about. She walked further in, closer towards the both of them.

“Is there, um…”

Oh god, so much blood, it was just like-

She shook her head. Just like the two teachers. Just like that.

“Is there anything I can help with?”

Well, that was a surprisingly friendly greeting, at least. Ashley kind of wanted to dwell on that, but the sight of Sam's fucked up leg pushed everything else to the side.

"Shit," she grunted. She moved up to Michelle's side, already shedding her bag and sliding the scythe off her shoulder. She dropped the bag and leaned the scythe against the back of the pew. She had the presence of mind to angle it away from Sam, so that it wouldn't comically slide down and guillotine him or some shit like that.

"Of course we know who you are, Kian, fuck." Fucking silly bugger. Maybe it wasn't so weird to think that you could forget things like that here, but Ashley remembered everything and everyone all too clearly. "What the fuck happened to you two?"

Neither mentioned Morton or recoiled at the sight of Michelle or questioned what Ashley was doing with her. That was good. Fuck. The best and worst thought was that Morton could just be a horrible mistake, and that most people would... what, be understanding? Or at least do as Ashley had tried to get across to Michelle and not assume that she was a serial killer on a rampage.

Fucking look at her, though. She was as threatening as a drowned rat.

Michelle had already offered her help, so Ashley let the offer stand. She could jump in if another pair of hands was needed, but she didn't think that she knew any more practically than the rest of them.

Kian was continuing to work on Sam's wound and then he started to use the bandages on Sam's leg as best as he could. He didn't even feel embarrassed if the girls did remember him or not and he was feeling grateful that Michelle was willing to help out. He didn't really want to take advantage of the offer but....

"Well, I want to ask. Can you spare some water? Sam really needs it right now." Kian said, as he looked over to her with a serious look on his face and he then looked back at what he was doing, making sure that he was not doing a bad job. "I uh.... Well, I only just met Sam a few minutes ago so I only really know that someone attacked him and stole his bag. The injury is not as bad as it looks, even if it looks like it because of there being a lot of blood."

Kian still wanted to know about what happened with Michelle and Morton. But he was going to wait and see if the two girls would be willing to talk about it later on.

((Timeskip Approved))

The ceiling seemed to spin around before Sam’s eyes as he lay limp against the hard pew. He could feel his entire body almost sinking into the surface, the cumulative effects of exhaustion and sleep deprivation finally beginning to set it. The others were having some sort of a conversation, but the words they were saying barely seemed to register. Of course, it wasn't like he was planning to ignore then. He just need to rest his eyes for a moment. Just a second…

------

Sam felt his eyes jerk open at the crackle of a loudspeaker. Pulling himself into a sitting position, he rubbed his face before looking around, his vision still rather blurry. However long he was out, it didn't seem to have done him any good. If anything, he felt even worse than before.

He groaned as he pulled himself to a sitting position, forcing himself to listen to the propaganda spewing out of the wall. The reading was a lot more ambiguous about self-defense and accidents, but the majority of deaths could easily be given the benefit of the doubt. That is, except for one.

There was no questioning it. Not only had Oliver gone completely off his rocker, but he had followed up his failure at murder with a success. Worst of all, he knew about how Sam was planning to get out of here, and likely had full intent of foiling it at any opportunity.

Sam pressed his hand tightly against his face as the full gravity of the situation began to set in. As long as that bastard was still alive, any attempt at escape was in jeopardy. Oliver was a direct threat to every student remaining on this island, and the fact that Sam had trusted him at all meant that the monster being unleashed was partly his responsibility.

He grasped for the cane as he struggled to his feet. His whole body felt weak and slow, and he had a sneaking suspicion that his assigned weapon was the only thing keeping him from falling over. Nevertheless, he took a deep breath before beginning to limp his way down the aisle, turning to the others after a few steps.

"Oliver…" he paused for a moment as he struggled to find words, the pain and exhaustion feeling like lead weights pulling down his mind. "He's gone completely insane. He thinks he can beat the Americans somehow if we all end up dead."

Sam continued forward a few more steps, grunting as a flare of pain burst from the wound in his thigh.

"There's still a chance we can get rescued, but we've got no chance if Oliver ends up killing us all first. I'm… going to take him out before that happens, and I'd welcome any assistance from you people."

He stopped as he reached the door to the church, looking back intently at the group was about to leave behind. Experience had taught him that the odds of anyone taking the smart decision here were slim to none, but there was no harm in giving them a chance to reply.
