"Heya, Lena! Would you mind answering a few question about our school's renovation efforts? It's for the S.E.T."

"Um... sorry. Not now, I have to head to farm- um.. parent's farm. My farm. Excuse me please!"

"That's, um, fine. I hope everything's alright!"

"Hey, Pete! Would you like to talk with me a little bit about the recent construction around our school? It's for this, um, article I'm writing."

"Oh, what? Uh.... nah. Nah, don't know nothin about that."

"Oh, um, sorry. I'll, um, see if I can find someone else then."

"Hey, Freya! Would you be willing to talk with me about the renovation efforts around our-"

"Fuck off."

"I. Um. Okay. Sorry…"

Man, Michelle was not having any luck with these vox pops today.

((Michelle White, Sandbox Start))

Like, seriously, literally everyone she'd tried to talk to had some other plans or some place to go to or something like that. It was weird. Uncanny. Almost as if they were deliberately trying to avoid being interviewed or something, which… was a fair reputation, she had to admit. As much as she would love to be better at it admittedly the whole 'talking to people you're not explicitly friends with' thing was still sorta really hard for her to do! Like, at the very least doing an interview didn't turn her into a stuttering mess now but if Michelle wanted to be, like, something other than the total mess she was she still had a ways to go, but hey! She was sure she could make it. Eventually this experience would pay off and she'd be, like, actually good at things!

Yeah!

Good thought, Michelle!

First off, though, she actually had to find someone who'd actually talk to her and stuff, and while that was easy normally, today it seemed to be far too difficult to find anyone who wanted to talk for the newspaper, which was… still weird, to be honest. Were the changes happening to the school infrastructure too boring for people to want to talk about? Did they somehow not affect much of the student body? Michelle doubted the second one - given the construction blocking things off and the fact that the school was finally repairing from the bombings a couple years ago - but she supposed that that might be it, if there was nobody who wanted to talk with her about it the only real reason (that didn't have anything to do with her or with any allegations about the capability of her vox pops) must be due to a some sort of general disinterest, or something.

Still, there was no point in giving up hope. It wasn't as if she had talked to everyone here, odds were there was someone who would want to talk with her about this.

All she had to do was find them.

So she moved again. Through the school grounds, head up to catch out anyone who turned to look at her.

Rue von Schroeder: Sandbox Start

Rue saw Michelle before Michelle saw her. Unfortunately, she didn't turn away quickly enough to avoid eye contact and prevent Michelle from seeing Rue seeing her.

She had just gone for a stroll around the school grounds during her free period, and was in fact feeling pretty social today. However, Michelle was... not Rue's favorite person. There wasn't anything in particular that was wrong with her, and God knew she gave her absolute all in social interaction. The problem was that you could really tell that Michelle was giving her all. The effort radiated off of her like gamma rays which would infest anyone insufficiently prepared with awkwardness rather than cancer.

For Rue, who had always socialized easily when the mood came to her, conversation with Michelle could be generously described as an endeavor.

They had already gone through the whole process of seeing each other and non-verbally acknowledging each other's presence though, so now Michelle was headed over here. Rue noted with a sinking feeling that it looked like she wanted something.

At least Rue was pretty good at fake smiles that didn't look fake. "Hi, Michelle. You're looking... chipper."

Rue was only able to get through the first half of her sentence before she was-

Rue was pretty sure she had never heard anyone abbreviate the school newspaper's name to S.E.T. before. One could chalk it up to her lack of contact with people who worked on the paper, but it could just as easily be something that only Michelle did for reasons unknown.

Rue knew which one she'd bet on, at any rate.

Well, there was no escaping now without being unnecessarily rude or throwing out an obviously transparent excuse. "...Sure."

Wait, wait.

Actual success?

That was great! Seriously, it was! The way the conversation was initially going Michelle was honestly thinking that Rue would be one of those people who considered themselves too cool to associate themselves with the school newspaper but apparently that wasn't the case, and that was fantastic! Seriously. This was such a relief. Now she could do her interview and once that was done she could type it up and once that was done the S.E.T would finally meet its article quota for the March issue and she'd be finally able to sit back for a bit. Do the things she liked and read the things she had to constantly hold off in order to focus on actually having conversations with people.

She closed her eyes. Shook her head. She still had to do the interview first, although…

Maybe once she was done with this she could reward herself by catching up on Kitchen Nightmares?

Yeah. Yeah! That was a good plan.

She still had to do the interview first, though.

"Alright! Um…"

She put her bag — a brown worn leather satchel with a long strip, found looking through her grandmother's house a few years ago — down on the ground. She fumbled for a bit (reminding herself that she had to buy lunch from the canteen today, she couldn't forget) and brought two items out. The first was a tape recorder, one she'd used when she was four which she'd found a year ago while looking through her basement. It was so she could re-listen to this interview after it was over so that she wouldn't have to keep all the details of what people said in her head. The second was a notebook, one which she'd put in all the questions she needed to ask. She looked at the book, saw the question at the top of the page, and…

"Okay. First question! How much are you aware of the bombing damages present around our school?"

There was an audible click as she then turned the tape recorder on. She'd forgotten to do it at the start again, but at least this time she'd done it before Rue had responded.

Rue glanced around the surrounding area, not turning her head but still rather obviously sweeping over it with her eyes. Construction tape. Collapsed-in walls. Rubble.

Michelle, standing in the middle of it all and looking for all the world like she could have been destruction in human form if you framed it just right. A human atom bomb, containing all the world's social missteps within herself under enormous pressure.

"...Very."

Now I am become Michelle, destroyer of Rue's patience.

That might be unfair. Michelle probably had a script that she had to follow, and Rue had stuttered through enough presentations and projects that didn't flow naturally to know how that went. Luckily for the veneer of friendly interaction, Rue had been able to keep from rolling her eyes at the question.

Lucy Arkwright: Sandbox Start

Lucy shouldn’t have been wanting to get involved with this, she wasn’t up for talking today. Her main schedule for today was to study, and then go to bed early, she just wasn’t up to any thing much really. Well, maybe except for this. Spying on something shouldn’t be too much work, and it’s something she’s fairly good at.

She watched behind them, as if she was an eagle ready to strike, or a undercover police officer spying on mafia dealings. She did want to get involved, yes, maybe give Michelle a good news report. Lucy thought Michelle was quite a cheerful girl, if not socially awkward. But who was she to talk? Lucy was the one who couldn’t keep a conversation for more then eight minutes without saying something out of line. She did absent-mindlessly wonder to herself out loud as well.

“Huh, might be a good idea to socialise a bit, and fill in someone’s report. Grandpa once told me men weren’t made to be islands...Because cliche idioms are totally a idio-t’s thing.”

Walking up behind one of them, Lucy felt a bit nervous, she wouldn’t sometimes, but today, she was just feeling shy. Lucy waved her hand up a little and quietly tried to introduce herself.
“Hello...Is this a interview? Mind if, uhh...I join in? I’m quite smart, I think..”
Lucy was silently kicking herself in the head, why must she be so shy now?

"Okay!"

The first question was answered! Admittedly the answer was too short for her to be able to put it into her article but that didn't matter! Now that the first question was done she could go through with the rest of the questions and if she really needed to put an answer to this particular question into the magazine she could just simply use an interview from someone else and that was something she was sure she could do. Interviews tended to become easier for her once she had already done some so if there was still time during lunch after this (what time was it, anyway? she hadn't checked her watch in a while) she could probably find someone else to talk to, get as many opinions as she possibly-

Michelle turned around and jumped at the same time when she heard the sudden voice. The adrenaline (the feeling rushing through her body making her really want to move around) made her miss the first couple words of what Lucy was saying. She could get the rest of it, but…

She smiled. She was sure that there wouldn't be any problems with missing the first part.

"Sure!" She said, taking a step backwards so that she was looking at both Rue and Lucy at the same time. Doing a multi-person interview (not really a focus group, not enough people for that to be the correct term) was admittedly not something Michelle had done that often, but she was sure she'd be fine. She'd heard that Lucy could be slightly weird, but weird was far from a problem for Michelle.

Lucy sighed upon hearing Michelle’s normal reaction. So she hasn’t screwed up with socialising, yet.
Bombing damages? Wasn’t something she was interested in really, and she was trying to get her thoughts in order currently. The brain, in her opinion, was like a computer with programs, files and a trash system. In Lucy’s case, her metaphorical computer would be cluttered with documents, most which were random, unimportant, and most of all, interfering with her searching.

“Well, that...um..er..”
It would have been quite awkward, because despite Lucy trying her best, she was taking slightly too long to answer.
She continued with trying to sort through her thoughts and information, and suddenly smiled. She had found her answer.

“Oh, the bombings around the school? I’m aware, and to be honest? I’m disgusted. I don’t know why they would try and bomb a school, and I’m not good with finances, but it must cost the school much too much to rebuild the rooms. They don’t have a choice, the students won’t be able to concentrate if the science lab they used yesterday was blown into rubble and ash, wouldn’t they?. On the good side, I guess the bombs aren’t radioactive? I guess?”

There, Lucy gave what she though was a newspaper worthy testimony, for such a topic she didn’t like anyways, if Michelle had questioned certain others things, she’ll probably be on for hours.

Lucy's abrupt arrival was a double-edged sword. With Michelle's back turned, Rue realized that she had been standing stiffly, unnaturally. She took a breath and rolled her shoulders to ease some of the tension from them. Spine still upright, but not ramrod straight. That was better. Friendlier.

Of course, the other edge was that now Rue was outnumbered. Lucy was certainly far more Michelle's speed than Rue was either of theirs. Which was to say that Lucy had a few screws loose upstairs. If the two of them ended up on the same wavelength though, maybe Rue could keep this short and sweet and slip away at the first opportunity. It was going to be a busy afternoon, and she wanted some time to herself before she had to move on to the next thing in her schedule.

At least Lucy could come across as passionate. That was probably something to editorialize about.

People who really were smart never needed to announce that they were, though.

"I would go so far as to say that most of the student body is probably aware of the damages." The brief reprieve let Rue make her tone light, and she eased a more natural-looking smile back onto her face when attention was returned to her.

Michelle closed her eyes, scratched the back of her head in response to Rue's own response.

"I, um. I know. I'm mostly just asking this for the sake of starting the conversation." A trace of nervousness was betrayed in the laugh following. "That's if you don't mind me having asked it, of course."

Maybe it was time for her to move onto the next question? She had enough (way more than enough, she was incredibly thankful to Lucy for that answer) out of this question already and if she could be honest there was an incredible feeling of awkwardness permeating this conversation and Michelle just really really really didn't want the tone of this chat to be influenced by it because it was an actual interview! It was one of the less-than-the-ideal-number times that someone was actually willing to talk to her about things for the S.E.T! She really, really didn't want things to get messed up because of that since then it meant that she wouldn't be able to get another interview and then she wouldn't be able to get what she needed for her article and that would mess up with all the plans she had for her free time!

But it wasn't too much of a problem. She just had to…

She grabbed at her bag. She'd put the notepad back in there when she started asking Rue questions and now she couldn't get it out and she tugged and-

She got it out. Quickly putting it close to her face she read down to the second question, looked up, and…

"Okay, next question for the both of you: what are your thoughts on the repair efforts about to begin? Is there anything you would particularly like out of them?"

The notepad stayed in the arm put at her side as she asked the question. She was pretty sure the time taken to get things out made the awkwardness stronger, so…

Um…

Yeah! She was just going to try and not mess that up again. She didn't really know if she would succeed, but at worst she could still try to make the thought count!

It was quite lucky that Lucy wasn’t feeling that analysing sort of mood, where she paid attention to the smallest detail, no, this Lucy was the spacy one. Good for Michelle, otherwise, well, staring brown eyes probably would have been creepy and distracting.

Not to say she wasn’t being weird with her eyes currently. Except this was the vacantly staring into nothing kind of stare, not the staring into the soul one.

Coming back from her little space out, Lucy heard Michelle’s question on something something repair. Well, just enough stuff to reply anyways.

“Well, first, they need to make the rebuilt rooms prettier, then add some new rooms, then, this is the most important part by the way, make the walls more resilient in the future! Seriously! We would haven’t had this problem if we had a bomb-resistant safe house or something!”

“...Oh yeah, and also, the repair efforts are alright, I guess.”

"A closer and more easily accessible bomb shelter, maybe one actually on the school grounds, would be good," Rue agreed. "Reinforcing the entire school probably isn't possible, but safe areas could be improved. As for what else... well, while they're adding things, they could install some better wi-fi."

She smiled slightly again to signify that she was half-joking. Only half, though. It would certainly make Rue's life easier if her internet connection wasn't so spotty in most part of the school. In classes that allowed computers and that she didn't feel like paying attention in, Rue usually browsed programming forums and occasionally searched out some quick and easy freelance jobs she might be able to do to save up a little for herself.

"I'm glad that they're finally getting to it, at least. The construction will be disruptive, I suppose, but I doubt it will be any worse than having to work around the damages has been."

Rue rested one hand on her hip and tilted her head to the side a bit, making an effort to keep looking engaged while she waited on Michelle's next question.

“Alright. Next question!”

She took a look at her notepad, trying not to accidentally unbalance all the things in her hands as she took it out of her armpit. She looked past the first two questions and all the miscellaneous scribbles, saw the last two, and scrunched her face slightly. Was the last question here really needed? She put it there because she liked to put four questions in and she thought that maybe it would maybe be relevant to what she was talking about but now she was here she was unsure about whether it would be something she’d put into the article or not. She could maybe ask it, but this situation felt awkward enough as is and it felt best that she let these two on their way sooner rather than later.

...What if the question would come up in the article, though?

Hm.

Nah. Better off not making this conversation too long. If it turned out the answer was something she needed she could just interview Galahad. It probably wouldn’t be too much sweat off his back.

“Actually, last question!” She hoped her sudden change of mind hadn’t reflected on her face too much. “Do you think these repairs are going to help make the school a safer and happier place?”

Now that was a question Lucy could answer with no hassle and sincerely. And a bit too enthusiastically.

"Of course! Why wouldn't it? It'll just make school wayyy better then it is already."
___________________________
This may not be a opinion she kept usually, but Lucy (at least at the moment) loved school. Sure, she couldn't care less that she failed a fair few tests on her electives, they were BORING. Why would she to put effort into sewing some itchy clothing that never turned out right, or learn a language of which she didn't even like the origin country?

Because she chose it at the beginning of the year? Don't be ridiculous. If she wanted to do the subject nearly a year ago and lost all motivation for it, that was the same as never wanting to do it.
.....
.....
What was with her? Lucy thought about how much she loved school, and it went to a thought tangent about electives. If she wasn't looking like she was having a stroke in the physical world, then it must have been close.

Anyways. Lucy loved learning, school = learning, Lucy was smart, thus excelled in school. That was about as simple as it got. Also, there was an underlying reason why she loved school as well, but she couldn't be bothered to think about that right now.
______________________________
Man, how could one simple question trigger such a huge line of thought?

Lucy, waking up from her dazed state, simply gave Michelle a smile. It should have been reassuring, but with how strangely she has acted today, Lucy had a feeling that it was instead the smile of a predator staring down at her prey instead. Oh well, she had many feelings, such as the one where Lucy thought Michelle was reconsidering something, this one didn't matter too much.
