Open Grave

M07 Start; Open

North from the Ghost town is an old fashioned, but well maintained, wood and brick chapel. The building is surrounded by a large stone wall around it's premises. The chapel itself is in good, condition with rows of seats lining the inside of the main sermon room. There is also a back room formerly used by the preachers of the church. Outside of the chapel sits an empty graveyard, giving the location an almost ominous atmosphere.

(M07: Alex Henry - START)

Alex Henry was lying in a grave.

It was probably the most disconcerting moment of his life – well, maybe second, the moment when the gas started seeping into the train carriage was pretty bad – lying on the wet, recently dug earth looking up at the clear blue sky while the dirt walls loomed up on either side of him. It was a very strange feeling.

He had laid there for a few minutes, working through everything in his head; he remembered the train, he remembered ‘The Sheriff’ and a quick feel of his neck had confirmed the presence of a leather collar. This was either the most elaborate dream he had ever had or this was really happening, they really were train jacked on there way to… wherever they were going and now he and his classmates were going to fight to the death.

And he was lying in a grave. Somehow this seemed like a bad omen.

If he climbed out of here and found out his name was on the headstone he would seriously start to freak out.

Sighing, Alex put his hands on the dirt on either side of him and pushed himself up to a sitting position, reaching up to grab the lip of the grave to pull himself up to a stand. The edge of the grave only came up to about the bottom of his chest thankfully, more four feet under than six. Lying on the ground right at the edge were a tan canvas bag and a large inflated black rubber ring; an inner-tube. God, that wasn’t his weapon, was it?

Putting his hands on the lip of the grave again he was able to scramble up to ground level, rubbing the dirt off of his hands and the knees of his jeans before picking up the bag. Food, water, first aid kit, map and compass – he’d check that out in a bit – flashlight… no weapon. He doubted everyone else had gotten a floatation device as well; so he guessed that meant the inner-tube was his ‘weapon’.

It wasn’t like he was planning on killing anyone or anything, but seriously, an inner-tube? This place looked like it was in the freaking desert; at what point would he need to increase his buoyancy?

Is little internal rant over, Alex picked up the inner-tube – hey, it was better than nothing – and turned towards the most prominent feature of the landscape; the Chapel. The large wood and brick building seemed to be in pretty good shape for its apparent age and since there wasn’t anywhere else to go he decided to take a look inside.

F06 - Lucy Johnston - START

Lucy hadn't been in a church for more than six years. Last time she went had been for her cousin's christening, and before that she couldn't even remember when. A wedding of some sort probably. So waking up on a pew had been strange, but she had known immediately what was going on and where she was. The ceiling was beamed and rose to a high arch. There was a stained glass window that scattered pretty colours over her pale face.

She sat up too fast and for a sickening moment the room spinned. Looking around, she took in more of the church, that was really more of a chapel. About eight rows of seats, two pews across, well maintained. The walls caught the light of the stained glass window too. At the front there was a table, and a bible, and some other things that Lucy didn't know or care for the name of. What she wanted to know was whose clever idea it was to let her wake up in a chapel. She was one of the least religious people in their year. Perhaps that was why.

There was a clarity of thought about her as she stood up and began making her way down the middle aisle towards the altar. To the right there was the bible on its stand, to her left a pulpit. Lucy grinned, she'd never really gotten to explore a church before, they had always seemed such secretive places. But this one, though it was in good condition, seemed to have fallen into disuse. She climbed the stairs of the pulpit enthusiastically, looking out over the church. Imagining a congregation of people. Who had come to this place? All at once, Lucy felt a desire to see what was outside, what kind of place they were in. Scattered around were her classmates, and she was expected to kill them all.

If she could hide herself for long enough, she might only have to kill one person and get home alive. The cogs in her brain started whirring. Could it be possible? Suddenly she remembered what the Sheriff had said on the train. A weapon! Lucy hadn't even noticed her bag, and ran from the pulpit to the pew she had woken up on, grabbing the rucksack that sat on the floor and rifling quickly through it.

There was no weapon. Lucy's heart sank.

On her second going through of the bag she noticed it, something she had dismissed as a bottle of water was actually a bottle of moonshine. Seriously? Cracking open the lid, the smell was immediately apparent and she wrinkled her nose in disgust. Twisting the cap so it was screwed tightly again, she out it back into her bag grumpily. Not that she was averse to alcohol, in fact, Lucy was more than happy to slip under its intoxicating mask when the circumstances were right. Hitching her backpack onto her shoulders she started heading for the door.

Glancing out of a window as she passed it, she spotted Alex heading for the church. Immediately, adrenaline coursed through her system and her heart started thudding. She looked around quickly for somewhere to hide. There was a small cupboard close to the door, and Lucy pressed herself and her bag into it. She calmed her breathing as she waited, not sure what she was going to do when he got here, and not entirely sure why she was hiding from him in the first place. Cracking the cupboard door open slightly, she shifted so that she had a better view of the entrance to the chapel.

The large wooden doors swung open with a soft creak, opening into a church that looked unremarkable except for the fact that it still looked in such good shape despite its apparent age and disuse.

Alex walked down the aisle slowly, listening as his footsteps seemed to echo even in this small space. There was something kind of eerie about an empty church in the middle of nowhere; then again he had never really liked churches to begin with. His family wasn’t very religious, Christian but not really church goers; the last time he had been in a church had been his grandfather’s funeral.

A quick lap of the church revealed nothing to really talk about; it was empty, completely empty, so he must have been the only one dropped off here. He sat down about three rows back from the pulpit, putting his large inner-tube up against the side of the pews before taking a seat and letting out a sigh. It didn’t look like anyone was here; the church seemed to be just this one big room and nothing else so they couldn’t be hiding anywhere. It didn’t look like he was going to find anything useful here either; he hadn’t really expected to find any food here anyway and a church really wasn’t the best place to be looking for replacement weapons. Probably for the best; he was pretty sure ransacking a church for supplies was a big moral no-no anyway.

So, now that this idea had fallen through, he had two options. He could go out and look for people. He could take out his map, find the place where most people would go or where he thought his friends might go and search for them. Although, unless he had been out much longer than everyone else people might not have had much chance to move around and congregate on those places, they’d probably all be waking up and exploring their initial surrounding like he was now. There was also the chance he might run into someone less peacefully inclined than himself as well and without a weapon to defend himself with he didn’t like his chances in that situation.

As for the other; this church looked pretty safe. It had thick doors, only one entrance and was, he assumed, kind of out of the way. If he wanted to just board up somewhere and spend his time in this ‘game’ hiding away this was probably the best place to do it. Then he could just wait for his friends or anyone else to come to him and he would get the choice of whether or not to let them in. Finding enough supplies to last through this ordeal might be a problem though.

Go outside and maybe get killed, or spend the rest of his life in a church? Tough choice.

Why did you hide in a cupboard?

In hindsight, it had been a stupid thing to do. The boy, whom she had by now identified as Alex Henry, didn't look like he was going anywhere. He also didn't look particularly violent, he wasn't waving a gun around or shouting. In fact, he was sitting, about five metres away from her. She could almost hear him breathing. She looked at the inner tube through her gap in the doors and barely supressed a grin. If she'd been given a bottle of moonshine, who knew what everyone else had gotten? Maybe they were all duds, and they were supposed to kill each other with their bare hands. It was possible that Alex had picked up the tube from outside, but why he would have done, and then decided to carry it around was a mystery to her. Hah! Someone worse off than me! At least the glass bottle her moonshine came in could be used as a weapon. Heck, if she could fine some matches, the smell of alcohol when she opened it suggested that it was probably pretty flammable.

Ooh, am I going to hell for bring alcohol into a church? Nah, they drink wine, don't they?

Lucy tended not to bother herself with thoughts of what might lie beyond the mortal realm, but that was when she had years and years of future left to look forward to. Now she was facing imminent demise. But not, probably, from Alex Henry. Lucy shifted herself to get a better look at the back of his head, as though she could see inside his mind and figure out what he was really thinking. She didn't know him well, they moved in different circles, he was one of the musical, artsy types while she tended to hang out with the jocks. His light brown hair gave nothing away. Still, friends were better than enemies, right? Lucy reached into her bag and extracted the moonshine, untwisting the lid slightly so that if he should make a sudden attack or be annoying in some way, she could throw it in his eyes.

Still, there wasn't that mucch of it and she didn't want to waste it, so Lucy went with trying to be as gentle about things as possible. Pretend you woke up in the cupboard! Hand lying close to the moonshine, Lucy tried to lie back in a semi confortable position. There were a few cloaks on the floor, the sort that a choir might wear, and once she bent her hip so her legs were sticking in the air against the side of the cupboard, she was moderately comfortable.

Lucy made a groaning noise, and started banging on the cupboard door. Best to play vulnerable. She wasn't sure how much Alex knew about her usual, non-vulnerable personality to be taken in by it. "Nnyrargh!"

Before Alex could fully make a decision on what to do next he was broken out of his thoughts by a groaning noise followed by a series of bangs. Thinking someone might be trying to come up behind him he whipped his head around to face the door, seeing them wide open and with nothing to be seen inside or outside the church.

Frowning in confusion he stood up and walked closer to the door; where could the noise be coming from? It didn’t sound like it was coming from outside, it was too close, but there wasn’t anybody inside either. Looking around just to confirm that fact Alex verified that there were no other rooms to the church, no doors that anybody could be knocking on. The only thing other than the pews and the pulpit seemed to be a few cupboards dotted around…

It as coming from the cupboard wasn’t it?

Walking towards the cupboard nearest to the front doors he stopped in front of it and listened; sure enough, the banging seemed to be coming from the small storage space right in front of him. Damn, first they throw him in an open grave now they stuff someone in a cupboard. Putting in this ‘game’ was bad enough but now they are just being dicks.

“Hello? I’m going to open the doors now, don’t try to hit me please”

He was probably going to get socked in the face anyway, possibly even stabbed or shot now that he thought of it. God that would suck. Couldn’t he just… no, he couldn’t just leave them in there; he had to get them out. Bending down he grabbed the handles on the doors and pulled, stepping back and to the side as he did so to get out of the way of whatever the person did next.

Once she was lying down she could no longer see out the gap between the doors, and so she listened closely. The faint sounds of footsteps coming towards her made her clench her fists in preparation. Your elbows are the strongest part of your body, use them. She tried to figure out how she could best use her elbows from her current position, and hooked her right arm over her body in preparation to fling it out at him if he got violent. Hopefully towards his face or crotch.

“Hello? I’m going to open the doors now, don’t try to hit me please”

Lucy barely supressed a laugh at how perfectly his words matched her preparations. Was it luck, or was she more predictable than she thought? Maybe he'd woken up in a cupboard and that had been his first reaction. For all she knew he might have killed four people already, though she wasn't sure what he might have done that with.

But for all he knew, she might be a murderer too. And he didn't know that she didn't have a gun. And that wouldn't technically have come under the class of "don't hit me!" Fine, I'll shoot you instead. Except I don't have a gun.

Just then the doors swung open. Her eyes had adjusted to the darkness of the cupboard and the light and airy church blurred for a couple of seconds. Alex was no where in sight initially, and once her vision had adjusted she rolled out of the cupboard and sprang lightly to her feet, looking at Alex with an almost defiant expression. Need to make friends. She softened her expression. Perhaps he would do for now, but she would need to find someone with a better weapon soon if she was going to have any hope of surviving.

"Hi," Lucy said in a cracked voice, giving a pathetic wave. "Alex, right?"

((F13 - Maria Hall: START!))

Maria had woken up lying on the dirt in the middle of nowhere. She had no idea where she was, but she knew enough to know that wherever she was it was somewhere that she'd never thought she'd be. Ever.

Within walking distance was a small graveyard. The sparse headstones in the area indicated that this particular location couldn't have been filled with much people at any point in time. It was more than a little unsettling waking up so close to the resting place of the dead, but Maria wasn't going to let that get to her.

She had to get up, get going, and find a way to make it through this game. She was no stranger to fights, but something told her that this particular battle would spell her end if she fought the way she normally did. She checked the pack that they had given her. The usual crap that people bring along when camping. Nothing particularly useful.

And a spatula. She stared at it for a moment. "Better than nothing." She'd have to find something better, or else break it in such a way so that it wasn't useless, at some later point.

There was a chapel within walking distance of the graveyard. Perfect, sending the 'bad kid' to church. She chuckled. "Someone's got a sense of humor."

She dusted herself off and started walking, but stopped dead in her tracks as she saw a guy rise from one of the graves.

"What the f-?"

Now THAT was creepy. Good thing she was a bit far behind that graveyard after all. Never a good sign to run into a person coming out of a grave. The guy started for the chapel. Maria went the same way. When he entered, she stopped by the graves. Nothing of use there, but one of them was unmarked.

And open.

She made her way to the church. No way was she sticking around here.

The doors were open, and inside were two people. "Looks like we're all in the same spot here. Just 3 church-goers huh?"

She gripped the spatula tight. "Be ready for anything."

When Lucy popped out of the cupboard she apparently woke up in she levelled Alex with such a stern, almost defiant look that for a moment he was worried that she really was going to hit him. Then her expression softened, the volleyball player apparently deciding that Alex wasn’t somebody she needed to attack, and introduced herself instead.

Before Alex could say anything however, he was interrupted by another sudden arrival. Turning to see who it was, stepping back into the shade on reflex as the sunlight hit his eyes, he saw one of the few people from his school he’d rather not run into in this ‘game’.

"Looks like we're all in the same spot here. Just 3 church-goers huh?"

In school Maria Hall was not someone who Alex was really afraid of. Sure, she had thrown some insults his way over the years and he was well aware of her reputation, but she had never physically bullied him and he was apparently low key enough to be under her radar and as long as he didn’t do anything to attract her attention he saw no reason why that would change.

Out here however? In a situation where it was kill or be killed? Maria was someone to be concerned of. The question of whether she was buying into what the Sheriff said, whether she was playing the game or not, troubled him. He would need to keep an eye on her. And Lucy as well for that matter. Either that or ditch them first chance he got and try to find someone he knew.

That was assuming this game was genuine of course. A quick glance at Maria’s hand showed she was holding a spatula like she was intending to murder the first person who looked at her funny; hadn’t anyone been given a proper weapon? Or were they all jokes like his inner-tube? Granted you could probably still kill someone with a spatula. Maybe if you used it to… ok, that wasn’t something he needed to be thinking about. This situation was bad enough without giving himself nightmares about kitchen utensils.

((Lisa Cooper, continued from Doctor! Doctor! I think I'm a pair of curtains!))

After she had made her way out of the town, Lisa found a nice cool patch in the shade and sat down, getting her map out and setting it down on the ground. She looked at it, studying it for a good long while, just trying to get a hold for where everything was. She wasn’t much of a cartographer, but it was easy enough to understand once she got the hang of what the symbols meant. She just wanted- and she didn’t think this was too unreasonable- to know exactly where she was going so that if-slash-when she had to start running from some crazed killer, she at least knew where she was going. Of course maps don’t perfectly translate into reality, and if-slash-when she ended up running she would likely end up panicking, forgetting everything she learned from the map and ending up diving into the nearest bush, rocking backwards and forwards crying and asking for her mother, but she figured she might as well give it a decent effort while it was quiet, while she had a decent shot.

Once she was reasonably sure she had learned the map, and that she probably knew her way around, Lisa decided to look for where she was headed, her next port of call. Having a destination, she decided, would keep her focused. She’d have a goal to shoot for, even though she didn’t know who or what she would find there. Plus, it let her think of the whole thing as an adventure: Get to Point A, try and put the golden monkey together (seriously, that thing was like three damn pieces, she could totally do it), get map, go to Point B, repeat. Problem was, she wasn’t too great at this whole deciding business. So, she tried the time-tested method of choosing. She hovered her finger over the map, closed her eyes, and pressed down. Her finger landed on the chapel, which was pretty close- plus- and was shelter from the heat- double plus- so, in all honesty, it was as good a place as any to start, right? She stood up, brushed the sand off of her clothes, picked up her scythe, and started walking.

It wasn’t a long journey, honestly. The chapel, as she had thought, wasn’t too far from the town, and even in the sweltering heat she was always pretty okay with walking anyway. Her biggest problem wasn’t axe-wielding psychopaths, or bullets flying towards her, it was sand getting between her toes as she walked. Well, if she had known she would be walking through a desert, she would have worn shoes, but it’s kind of impossible to plan for this sort of thing. Complaining wouldn’t solve the problem, anyway, it would probably just make it seem worse than it was. Carry on moving forwards, don’t be a whiny bitch because whiny bitches are annoying. It was better than walking barefoot, anyway.

The chapel was in plain sight, and Lisa decided pretty quickly that the best thing to do around buildings was to be cautious. She could hardly see the chapel through the sun’s glare, so she paused, caught her breath, and slowly ducked down, trying to get into a better position to scope out her surroundings. She crouched down and put her hands up to her forehead, and looked. The doors were open, which probably meant either someone was inside, or someone had left in a hurry. Either was good, for her, since the doors being open meant that anyone inside wasn’t too concerned with barricading themself in. In her books, that probably meant they were friendly, whoever they were. She couldn’t see anyone there, anyway. She wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or a bad thing.

She slowly got back up to her feet and began to walk cautiously through the empty graveyard, and up to the front doors of the chapel. Yes, there were people inside. People she recognised fairly well, at least. Maria …Hall? She wanted to say Hall, so she figured that was probably correct; Lucy Johnson or something, and Alex Henry. Not her best friends in the world, but at the same time, they weren’t complete strangers. That was cool with her. She took a step back, and lowered her scythe. She wasn’t planning on hurting them, but she didn’t want them to misinterpret her intentions. If anyone was jumpy, bad first impressions could be the death of her.

“Hey, guys.” She said, trying to project her voice as loudly and clearly as she could. “It’s me, Lisa. Lisa Cooper?”

“I, like, go to your school, in case you don’t really know me.” She paused for a moment. “What are you guys doing here?”

Maria Hall came in with a spatula almost as soon as Lucy finished her sentence. Lucy frowned, she wasn't sure about the way the girl was behaving, gripping the spatula as though she was under the delusion it was a knife or something. Retrieving her rucksack from the cupboard, she picked up the bottle of moonshine and regarded it as though she was only just discovering it. But as she pretended to read the dusty label on the side that she'd already read, her mind whirred. Maria had a bit of a reputation, and for that reason might be worth hanging around. But then, she might scare off some people with useful weapons that Lucy really needed to get a hold of if she was going to have any chance of winning this game. Also, Lucy genuinely found her nature in school really annoying, and it seemed doubtful that she would behave any differently here.

People were going to be put into groups in this game, and that was going to help Lucy sort out potential allies from potential enemies. Allies would be divided into people with useful skills and people with useful weapons, who could possibly be dropped later on. Enemies would be divided into people who would actively try to kill her, threats, and people who didn't have anything useful and so couldn't be counted as allies, but weren't actually enemies. Lucy named them cannon fodder.

Even as she came up with her categorising system, while pretending to scrutinise the label on the bottle and give Maria a nod in greeting, her conscience began to pang. Don't think about it. DON'T THINK ABOUT IT! You need to be objective. Emotions never win. The need to be practical and objective was more important than ever. It's not real. This is a dream. It's not really happening. You won't really be killing anyone.

"Me neither," Lucy said in response to Alex's reply. These two had both been tentatively categorised as enemies. Maria a threat, while Alex would probably fit into the category of cannon fodder. Still, she hadn't completely ruled either of them out as an ally, Maria had her advantages while she didn't know Alex enough to make a final judgement yet.

Seconds later, yet another person came in through the door. Lucy whipped her head around to see who it was, but saw the scythe before she was that it was Lisa. Lisa, who was only about five foot tall, sounding nervous, asking if they knew who she was. Why couldn't I get a damn scythe? She put the bottle of moonshine into her rucksack, mentally planning some kind of escape route if the shit should hit the fan. Run up the pulpit, hopefully they'll follow, then jump over the side. Run like hell. You're a runner. Oh, and best make friends with Lisa.

Lucy hoped like hell she'd never been a bitch to Lisa at some point in the past. The girl was fairly sporty if she recalled, swimming or something, and so already had a bit of respect from her point of view.

"Hey Lisa," Lucy said, trying to adopt a warmer tone. At least you haven't said much yet. Too stark a comparison might have looked suspicious from Alex and Maria's eyes. She didn't want to look too manipulative. "Welcome to the congregation, I guess. I'm here because I woke up in a cupboard." She indicated behind her. "Alex was kind enough to let me out."

Maria whipped around at the sound of the other girl's voice, pretty much ignoring what the other two said as unimportant. Because nothing was more important right now than dealing with the person who got the drop on her.

Lisa Cooper. She racked her brain for any more pertinent info. Sounded familiar, but she couldn't put her finger on it. "Have I threatened you before or something?" Her grip on the spatula started to loosen. Not so much out of relief, but more realization that if Lisa was going to do something with that scythe, the stupid spatula wasn't going to help.

"Not that it matters here anyway," she continued "I've got no issue with anyone here yet." And, truth be told, she didn't want to. Maria had been in plenty of fights before, but she'd never had to nor intended to kill someone. She hadn't planned on starting here.

Thus, intimidation and alliances were the name of her game. "Come on in I guess, we're all in the same boat right now." She made her way to one of the pews and sat down. She either needed to convince Lisa to be on her side, or figure out a way to bolt and quickly.

Anyone could be a killer here, and she still wasn't taking any chances.

For a place that seemed to be so far out of the way to Alex at first, this small abandoned Chapel sure did seem to attract a lot of people. With the arrival of Lisa their little ‘congregation’ as Lucy had put it had grown to four and while the church could certainly hold about ten times that with the numbers of pews it had it was starting to feel a little crowded to the young music lover.

Also disconcerting was the large farmers scythe in Lisa’s hand. Its presence answered Alex’s earlier question about whether or not anybody had been given any real weapons; while it wasn’t exactly designed to be used as one or even practical given the curved shaft and the fact that it was usually used to harvest wheat meant you could only really attack someone’s ankles, it was still a hell of a lot more lethal than a spatula or a pool toy.

When Lucy indicated him to the newcomer he nodded in what he hoped was a polite fashion and tried not to let his concerns show on his face. He was currently in the company of one person with a bladed weapon, one person with a history of violence among other things and one person who … woke up in a cupboard, but still might be a threat.

Part of Alex was saying that he should leave now before anything happened to break the uneasy peace that existed right now. Another part said to stick it out; safety in numbers was a proven concept after all, though that idea kind of clashed with the fact that one of those numbers might try to kill you later on. He couldn’t really make an exit with Lisa still in the doorway anyway, so he decided to do what he always tended to do in situations with a group this size; stay quiet and blend into the background. If things did take a turn for the murderous he could only hope that he was unnoticeable enough to evade attention long enough to slip out of the door.

Lisa shifted slightly, deciding to stay in the doorway for a moment. Putting herself in the way of the exit was a good idea, in case she needed to make a break for it. Luckily, it didn’t seem like they had too much of a problem with her being there. Lucy had tentatively welcomed her to the group- Lisa resused to call it a congregation- and briefly explained how she had ended up in the chapel, waking up in a cupboard and being rescued by Alex. Lisa’s only real question was how she had ended up pulling a R. Kelly in the first place, but it wasn’t her place to judge and she could probably go without knowing the answer to that. She assumed, temporarily, that Alex and Lucy were together. That seemed like a reasonable deduction. Sherlock Holmes, she wasn’t.

It was about then she realised that she had been holding her breath since she had finished talking. She let out a quiet sigh. Good job, too, she got the feeling she was starting to turn purple.

“That sounds like it was fun!” Lisa replied- to Lucy’s story- with some mock excitement in her voice, before she realised that sarcasm probably wasn’t the best first impression and toned it down midway through the sentence. Her face dropped. “I woke up in a clinic in the town, it’s out that way, I think. Wasn’t paying much attention.”

She also refused to say ‘that-a-way’, because using western slang would be acknowledging how ridiculous her situation was right now. She decided that not acknowledging it further would keep her grounded. The lie was more of a tactical move. She knew her way around the island just fine, and playing map-reader would probably make her more valuable for a team, but honesly, she didn’t want to have to fall back on it just yet. Keep it as a trump card, at best.

Lisa pointed out of the door with her free, bandaged arm, intentionally making her directions as vague as possible so no one inside could figure out exactly where the town was. She was in no hurry to rush back to that death trap. It would probably be useful at some point, for shaking off enemies- Wow, she was actually considering the possibility of having enemies- but not right now. Right now, she was making friends and influencing people.

So that was Lucy. Maria was different, for sure. She introduced herself to Lisa by asking if she had ever threatened her before. Even at the best of times, that kind of language would set off warning bells in Lisa’s head. She tried to reply, but she quickly got cut off. She was trying to play the intimidation card, but at the same time going on about how she had no issues yet. Right, then. If Lisa had issues with them, they all had issues, even if they were keeping quiet. Lisa eyed the silent Alex warily and looked back at Maria. She also invited Lisa in, so she took a single step forwards, not wanting to compromise her position at the door, yet.

Maria went off to mope in the pews. Awesome. Lisa wasn’t even going to question that. She wondered if the fact Alex hadn’t said anything to her yet made him her favourite so far.

Briefly, Lisa also wondered if Lucy and Maria were trying to persuade her to be their best friend, but she discarded it for the moment. She sighed, and finally walked into the church proper, standing just off to the side from the door. For the moment, at least, she needed to think this through.

“So,” She said. “Besides getting locked in things, what have you guys been doing so far?”

"What have we been doing?" Maria echoed, trying to come up with something that wasn't far from the truth but wasn't quite helpful anyway. "Can't you see? We've been abducted and put into some insane game. So we all went to church like good kids hoping to get out of it all."

It wasn't like that was anything but obvious. Still, no need to give any information to someone who was more than potentially a threat at the moment. If Lisa turned out to be an asset later on, then maybe she could get some info from Maria.

"Personally, no idea what those two have been up to, aside from rescuing fair maiden from the ferocious goddamn cupboard." She turned to Alex. "Nice work there by the way, sir knight." She decided to shut up before she said even more things to convince them not to roll with her.

It was suicide to anger or push away everyone else now, but the whole situation set Maria's defenses into motion. And with those defenses came sarcasm, insults, and anger. If she was going to last more than a day in a place filled with potential psychos, she was going to have to keep that attitude in check.

But old habits die hard, and keeping herself in line was proving to be more difficult than she had first thought. "If they're waiting for me to make a move then they can wait till they die. I ain't moving till the girl with the weapon does."

Lucy rolled her eyes as Maria spoke. She had always found the girl irritating, and had been fortunate for most of her school days to have managed to avoid her. Thinking about the bottle of moonshine in her rucksack, she suddenly craved it. Just one shot of what appeared to be pure ethanol might help this situation dramatically. Sure, she would probably die, but at least she wouldn't be aware of it. More and more she was starting to wish she'd left the church as soon as she'd woken up there. Nothing good ever happened in churches, always funerals, and weddings that would end in divorce and crying children getting water splashed on their heads.

"Well I only woke up about ten minutes ago..." said Lucy, shrugging. Did she seem a bit awake for someone whose anaesthetic was barely out of their system. "Maybe a bit longer." According to her lie she had spent most of it in the damn cupboard. Didn't stop the sarcastic tone of Maria's comment annoying her just a little. Lucy hated being protrayed as someone who needed to rely on others for anything. Independance and resourcefulness were things that she prided in herself. Stupid cupboard.

"Anyway, if I'm a fair maiden and he's a knight, what does that make you? Court jester?" Lucy retorted with a grin, pleased with herself for having come up with a joke. "I reckon Lisa could be a bodyguard of some kind, she's got the tools." She remembered the spatula and turned back to Maria. "Or maybe you should be cook?"
