((Will Brackenrig continued from A Party...))

Will circled his finger along the rim of his thermos, stopping every so often to take a sip of the milky liquid within. Chai tea was one of his favourites; the sweet concoction always made him feel a bit happier and even more relaxed than usual. He was especially glad he’d chosen to bring some tea with him today - he’d awoken a little bit too late to prepare his own lunch, and had to make do with cafeteria food instead.

Today had been a pretty average day, and the food he was currently dining on matched it perfectly. It wasn’t bad, per se, but it wasn’t altogether very appetising either. Still, Will knew the cafeteria staff worked hard to feed all of the kids every day, and he was certainly in no room to judge based on his own skills in the kitchen - which were next to nothing; a fact he had no qualms admitting. It wasn’t that bad, really. Sure some kids might be a bit fussy about the food they were served, but Will had never understood them. He didn’t mind all that much, and there were plenty  worse things in the world than wilted salad. Why couldn’t people just chill out and try to take life a tiny bit less seriously?

After awhile, he stopped sipping at his drink - realising that he should probably ration it a bit more if he didn’t want to run out ten minutes into lunch - and began picking casually at the rather sorry meal in front of him. It was a mixture of mashed potatoes and diced sausages, served alongside a portion of coleslaw and a sealed container of fruit jello for pudding. He took a few bites of the potatoes, interspersing them with measured sips from his thermos, and leant back in his chair, letting the sunshine that leaked through a nearby window gleam brightly over his face.

Yeah, life was good. As it usually was.

((Erik Lowell: Continued from Race to the Finish(Before you drop dead))).

Ah, the school cafeteria. Some hated it, some- well, they also hated it, but were forced to tolerate it due to lacking any great culinary skills of their own. Erik was fully in the latter category. Seeing as how one needed more variety in their diet than just mediocrely prepared sandwiches, he had been forced to train himself long and hard to resist the poisonous offerings of the school.

Alright, it wasn't really that bad, but hyperbole was fun, and a good way to pass the time when bored.

Clutching his tray containing a mixture of potatoes and sausages, a cardboard carton of milk, mysterious coleslaw, and a sorry cup of fruit trying to pass itself off as pudding, Erik spotted one of his regular lunch partners. Will was an all-around pretty cool guy, and a fellow aficionado of SOTF-TV, to boot.

Erik set his tray down and settled into the seat across from him. "Hello, Will! Anything new and exciting g-going on?" He sighed internally at the accursed stutter. No matter how much Erik had tried, he'd never been able to fully eliminate it. Talking was a lot harder than it appeared at first glance.

((Davis Todd -Sandbox- Continued From Henshaw))

As Davis' careless eyes managed to look past the tempting hot wings, he wandered around the cafeteria. Goddamn. He was sore as hell. He knew it was his fault for not being careful, but that didn't make him feel better at all.

His eyes were darting around, looking at the things he saw everyday like the light amount of snow outside or the lighting up above. Eventually, they had locked on to a table with two people sitting at it. Davis already had a table to sit at, with Matt, Brendan, and Isaiah and the rest of the guys. Still, for some reason today was the day that after-school special he saw some years ago faded into his memory, the one where it was encouraged to go sit at some random lonely-looking kids table and try to befriend them.

"Man, I am just now noticing I've never seen an after-school special after-school."

Still, that would be the right thing to do, right? Try to socialize with the unsociable and conform them to being sociable. At least, that was what was implied in those videos. In all honesty, he was realizing that he'd probably just make things awkward and uncomfortable. Of course, he had realized that too late, already sitting at the same table as Scarface and Mister Ginger, never making an introduction.

Davis did not plan for the long term.

((Asa Rosen continued from Artists and Critics))

Asa really hated the school lunches. He knew why they were terrible, whether it be from poorly trained cafeteria workers or school budgets being so shitty that students were left to eat what he assumed were slaughterhouse floor droppings and produce that was a day away from going bad. That still didn't mean he had to stand for it. Even though it meant having to take the time to do it, he would much rather pack a lunch in the morning than eat cafeteria garbage.

Asa sat alone at a table, eating a baloney sandwich and looking at his phone. He didn't really care to talk to anyone at lunch. It was a good time to browse certain sites and check the news, so he devoted his short lunch break to that. He could hear some guys chatting at the table next to him, but he simply rolled his eyes and kept his focus on his phone. They probably wouldn't have anything interesting to say to him.

Hmm. 7 Ways To Tell Someone You're Just Not That Into Them. That looks stupid. When the hell am I ever going to need to read that? Eh, that's a dumb site anyways. I better check Google News now.

Asa took another bite of his sandwich. He didn't have a whole lot of time to spend online, so he needed to focus and check as many of his favorite sites as he could before he went back to class.

Will's warm smile brightened as his friend Erik approached, carrying a similarly laden tray, before sitting opposite Will, asking him how his day was. Erik was a really friendly guy - if not a little bit nervous a lot of the time - and was one of Will’s favourite lunch partners. Like Will, he was a fairly large SOTF aficionado, and if there was a quick way of getting into Will’s good books, then being a fellow fanboy was most assuredly it.

“Hey, Erik. It’s all good with me. Nothing too exciting - I’m more than a little excited for the upcoming season, though.” Will offered Erik a friendly grin as he spooned another portion of mashed potato to his mouth; an attempt at hopefully dissipating his friend’s nerves. He didn’t get nervous too often, so there wasn’t much of a way for him to relate to Erik on that front. He did, however, want him to be as comfortable as possible, and he knew that being friendly and trying to steer the conversation towards something Erik also enjoyed was a fairly reliable method.

“How about you, man?”

Shortly after, they were approached by Davis Todd, a fellow classmate. Will knew he was a fairly skilled footballer, but other than that his knowledge of him was fairly minimal. He was a bit surprised that he’d chosen to sit with Erik and him - having assumed that he’d already have somewhere else to go - but it would only do to be friendly.

“Hey Davis! What’s up?”

Out of the corner of his eye Will noticed Asa Rosen sitting by himself at a nearby table, apparently consumed by whatever he was looking at on his phone. Asa had always struck him as rather cranky and more than a little aloof in spite of his mutual interest in SOTF, but even so, Will offered him a friendly wave, before turning back to his lunchmates and taking another sip of his tea.

((Gabriel Munez Continued from Feelin' Saxy(Maybe Not)))

There is no fuckin' way this is edible.

Maybe it was because he'd started cooking basic shit a few years back, but it seemed like ever since he'd gotten into high school, the meals had gotten progressively worse. He'd rather just bring something from home, but the last few days had eliminated that option. He still hadn't been able to find time to shop and replace everything that bitch had broken when she'd ran into him.

So mystery slop it was. He was pretty sure the faded lump was meant to be some kind of potato, and something that looked like it could be a distant cousin of sausage was sitting next to it. He'd choke it down after he found somewhere to sit.

The nearest open table had just one person sitting after it. Gabriel didn't remember his name. He was some kind of anti-social blogger type, the sort that he always ended up confused with. Some people might take that as a sign of solidarity. For Gabriel, it meant that he was just one peg above the assholes who came at him over stuff like that. Idiots like him just gave them ammo for no reason.

Still, his next option wasn't much better. Davis was the only one that he recognized, but the others didn't look to be his type. He didn't feel like trying to get through lunch surrounded by the fuckin' Sunshine Brigade, so lunch with the crazy bastard it was.

"Sittin' here."

It wasn't a question. He slid down onto the table and hoped the other guy was smart enough to keep his nose in his phone instead of getting pissy about it.

((Yeah, this has been left idle too long, so I'm breathing life in))

Asa continued to stare at his phone. The battery was getting a bit low. If he got the chance, he could probably charge his phone during class. He did keep a spare charger in his backpack, and there were always outlets out of sight in some classes. He made sure to look for some in case he needed one early in his school year, so he knew where all the outlets were.

Suddenly, he noticed a figure sitting down at his table. The guy made it clear he was sitting there regardless of what Asa thought. Asa rolled his eyes. He knew this guy. Gabriel Munez. He didn't particularly care about this guy. He had no reason to. If Grumpy Gabriel was going to insist he sit in close proximity to Asa, so be it. Just as long as he didn't get too close, he'd be fine.

"Fine," he said.

He continued to scroll through his phone. He noticed an interesting piece on drone warfare, and he wanted to see what that was about. Drones fascinated him from a critical perspective, and he was sure to get more pleasure from reading the article than talking to some guy.

((Holy hell, I'm sorry for how long this post took.))

"Doing p-pretty much the same as you!" Erik said, shooting Will a quick grin before digging into his coleslaw. Best to tackle the least appetizing portion of your plate first! It'd make the rest of the meal taste almost edible by comparison. "My blog's activity has spiked a lot recently. It's sorta amazing how speculation you can get from a single teaser image. I'm excited too, of course!"

It took quite a bit of time to sift through all the crap on the SOTF blogosphere to find the theories both interesting and plausible enough to be true, but that was what being a journalist was all about! Erik's blog had come a long way since its inception oh-so-many years ago. Brought a metaphorical tear of pride to his eyes, it did.

Before Erik could really start a discussion with Will, along came Davis Todd, for... some reason. Not that it was a problem, Davis was cool! Probably cool. Erik honestly didn't even know the guy that well, except that he was apparently pretty good at football. Erik was totally for talking to and learning more about new people, but he was slightly unnerved aback by Davis's complete silence. He vaguely felt like he was being judged, and absently adjusted his suit collar.

"Heya, Davis." Erik nodded politely at him, since it would have been really awkward if everyone had just kept silent. Will chimed in too, which was good. Conversation was good. Some movement in his peripheral vision caught Erik's eye, and he saw Asa sit down at a close by table, soon joined by Gabriel. Erik knew both of them, and Asa shared his love of SOTF, but both of them were kind of jerks and Erik didn't really interact with them that much. He continued eating his lunch, though now quite a bit more self-conscious than he had been a minute earlier.

((GM Permission Granted))

There is a time, a place, and a man, who in hindsight, created the most retched storm of tomfoolery where everything went wrong.

This was not that time.

Sure, Davis messed up right now. But he realized that, and he could still fix it. Davis had been correct in assuming that him sitting here would just cause tension. He guessed there actually was a reason people don't try to reach out to loners or break the mold.

Shit's awkward.

This didn't feel good no matter how he spun it in his head. They probably thought Davis was making fun of them, being an ass. It wasn't gonna be a good thing, but they'd probably just laugh it off and forget later, and he would too.

He stood up hastily, going AWOL on his own plan. Tray in hand, Davis' feet began gaining speed as he made his escape.

And now, they stumbled.

He fell forward, food falling in the air. Almost like slow motion, for a moment. Before he knew it, everything was normal again. He blinked a few times, now feeling the Styrofoam tray under his palm, balanced on top of a head of black hair, a head now buried into and under the coleslaw.

"...Fuck..."

Now was that time.

((GMing likewise granted))

Stay calm.

It was only an indescribable mass of shit raining down over his shoulders. It was no big deal. He could handle this. Noooo problem. He was just going to slow down, take a couple of deep, cole-slaw choked breaths, calmly grab his tray, and throw everything on it right into Davis's stupid fucking face.

The sloppy potatoes careened upwards and slapped into the other boy's nose, right on target. The vague, grey meat and it's accompanying sauce, on the other hand, flew around him, right into the blonde locks of the chipper boy he'd just been sitting with.

Gabriel blinked once. Then twice.

Then grinned.

Then shook violently, spraying some of the cole-slaw out onto Davis, and the blogger's smart phone, before grabbing another handful potato and whiffing it past Davis into the crowd.

One minute Will and Erik had been briefly discussing SOTF and the next he’d been waving farewell to Davis as he hurriedly fled from their table. Will didn’t exactly know why, though he suspected Davis might’ve wanted to go sit with his own friends. He was totally okay with that - to each his own, really - though he would’ve liked to have gotten to know Davis a little better.

Things went to hell pretty quickly after that.

Will’d turned to readdress Erik and resume their conversation about SOTF, but before he could even utter a word he heard a shout and a splash from nearby, followed by a few other voices and splashes entering the fray. He whirled around, eager to know the source of the commotion as well as to ensure that he and Erik wouldn’t be at risk of anything. He saw Gabriel drenched in the remnants of someone’s lunch and spraying coleslaw over Davis and Asa before throwing a whirlwind of food into the crowd. Will motioned to shout for someone to stop - sure, food fights could be fun and all, but mostly if they were amongst friends and didn’t have people as... aggressive as Gabriel thrown into the mix. Before he could manage any protestations, however, he felt the dull thump of sausage meat skim past his face, leaving a trail of glutinous brown sauce in its wake.

He lost any attempts at pacifism at that point, his only concern being that he avoided getting any more food on him - god only knew what damage his peacoat had sustained in that flurry of gravy and potatoes (he could only hope it didn’t stain) - and ensuring that Erik was safe. He was such a swell guy, and while Will knew he could cope with everything that was happening, he suspected that mightn’t be the case with Erik. Barely thinking, he grabbed his friend by the wrist attempting to make his voice heard over the commotion.

“Erik! Let’s get out of here-”

His breath was knocked sharply out of his throat as he felt a dull splattering of food against his back.

Well, that meant this peacoat, one of his favourites, was completely and utterly ruined.

Mothertruckers.

Will spun around once more, hand still clasped around Erik’s, before using his other to take his own, almost fully-laden, lunch tray, and toss it into the crowd.

Later, Will supposed he’d regret acting so rashly. But right now, he didn’t care about any of that.

Asa stared intensely at his phone. Already he was thinking of ways to respond to this article. Did he agree that the military was moving to a colder, more calculating method? Did he think the writer was using too many ad hominem arguments in the piece. His mind was already racing the minute the guy at the table got covered in food. Asa heard a noise, then noticed that there was some food on the table. Someone had dumped a tray of food on the knob sitting near him.

Asa wanted to laugh. It was so ridiculous that it was almost like something by Camus. That's when Gabriel threw his food back. Asa let out a laugh that time. It was like a new reality competition show, like the ones Asa found too low-brow for his taste. Two men enter, throw food, then one leaves. Asa would have kept laughing if Gabriel didn't decide to do his wet dog impersonation.

In that instant, Asa found his phone and sweatshirt covered in cole slaw. He stood up as Gabriel tossed some potatoes.

"What the fuck man!" he shouted at the boy.

Before he could get an answer, Asa realized the situation he was in. More food was airborne, not just from the clod before him. Sausage, cole slaw, potatoes, and milk cartons were flying through the air. Asa tried to duck under the table, but a carton of milk hit him in the head before he could crouch fast enough. Chocolate milk was now dripping down his stringy hair, with some drops getting on his glasses. Some milk had also gotten on his phone screen.

"Oh fuck!" he added as he threw himself under the table.

He quickly wiped his phone on a dry part of his pants. He watched as food landed on the ground and people ran about. He couldn't believe that such an occurrence was happening before him. He quickly began to type on his phone.
