As she got closer to the house, Noriko started to make out single words, and her smile slowly vanished.
"WHY SHOULD I..."
"... Bullet to the neck..."
"... get violent."
That didn't sound like two classmates planning to overthrow the game and get out of here. This sounded like something much more sinister.
Noriko gripped the Beretta as she reached the backyard of the house. As fate would have it, she approached the building from the backside.
Slowly she pushed against the backdoor. Her opponent showed no resistance and quickly swung open.
In the darkness she saw two outlines on what looked like classmates.
"Hello?" She called out, weapon in hand.

Defend herself? Bullshit. Megumi wasn't the smartest, but she wasn't stupid! She made a noise, and Shimizu came here immediately. That wasn't someone trying to defend themself, it was someone about to stalk up and stab someone! Well too bad, because Megumi was not about to be the perfect little victim here!
All of a sudden Shimizu was scared. Like Megumi was reaching for a gun instead of trying to keep her bag closed with her hand, trying to protect those few supplies she had.You know what? Good! Better that the other girl thinks she's ready to shoot than to try and advance on and try to kill her!

And then, a voice. One she didn't recognize immediately, and didn't help those on-edge feelings she felt.
She turned to the voice, voice loud as she spoke.

Noriko hadn't expected one of the outlines to scream at her.
Or maybe she had. Because why else would her gun have been pointed right at the other person, ready to fire?
It was only when the gunshot briefly illuminated the room that Noriko realized who she was shooting at.
Megumi Eto. One of her best friends.

Hirono kept her hands raised as Eto continued to scream at her, which turned out to be a very appropriate coincidence as a third party entered the house. She couldn't tell who it was in the few moments they were there, especially with it still being so dark and late at night. However, she didn't need to see their face to realize what was in their hand.
A gun. Not a possible gun like she was pretty sure Eto had, but an out-in-the-open, ready-to-shoot-someone gun.
"Don't shoot!" Hirono pleaded, but it was too late. She saw the muzzle flash, and she heard the shot. She didn't feel the shot though, so she was lucky in that regard. Hirono threw herself to the ground and hid behind a sofa. She clutched her knife tightly as she hid. She hoped that if the shooter tried to sneak around, then she'd be quicker with a jab of her blade. But to tell the truth, she was too busy being scared out of her wits to come up with a real plan.

Hirono remained ducked behind the sofa, waiting for more gunshots to ring out. But those shots never came. Instead, she heard the sound of rapid footsteps fading into the distance. Was... was it over? She poked her head up over the sofa to make sure, and sure enough, the shooter had run away.
The punk girl rose to her feet once more and breathed a sigh of relief, there may have been only one or two times in her life where she had been anywhere close to that scared. She took a moment to catch her breath, and in a weird way, she felt refreshed. She had been incredibly close to death, but she was alive. Maybe she had a pretty good shot of getting off of this island after all.
She turned to her side, and dread immediately returned to her. Eto was lying on the ground, unmoving.

Megumi let out a noise. Somewhere between a cough and a groan, she couldn't tell. She thought body armor was supposed to keep you alive and unharmed. Well, she was alive, but she didn't feel anywhere close to unharmed. She definitely had a bruise building up, and maybe a broken rib if she was really unlucky. And at this point she wasn't taking that possibility off the table.
For the second time in the last hour or so, she felt like she was better off not moving. Just lay there, her eyes closed, letting the world pass around her. It would've been more peaceful. Just not worrying about anything else. She might've liked it.
Then she felt pressure. On her chest, above the bruising area. And it wasn't as bad as getting shot, but it hurt.
Her eyes shot open, and she was face to face with Shimizu again.
But instead of a shriek of terror this time, she just grit her teeth and grunted out one word to her.

Okay, Eto wasn't actually dead. That was a relief. Hirono didn't actually have to watch someone die in front of her.
However, Eto was still fucking pissed, and the only word that she spoke would make it obvious to even the biggest dumbass how she felt. Hirono felt insulted, since she was pretty much just trying to make sure the girl was still alive. However, she also wasn't surprised. The die had been cast already, and it was one that she should've seen coming. Eto fucking hated her.
Hirono got back to her feet and was about to respond, but she didn't want to waste her words. The house was a bust. Between the yelling and the gunshot, there was way too much going on to draw attention there now. She just needed to get out of there.
Silently, Hirono made sure that the strap of her bag was securely on her shoulder. She kept her eyes on Eto for a few moments, but she realized quickly that the vest probably meant that the other girl didn't have a weapon. Once that hit her, she paid more attention to the window instead on her way out, to make sure that the same shooter or another one wasn't waiting in the wings.
Hirono ran out of the house and into the unknown of the island. Maybe these houses would be safe later, but she definitely didn't feel that way in the moment.

She pushed herself up and into a sitting position, trying her best to ignore her body's protests. So much had happened in such short time. It took a toll on her, but she wasn't allowed to stop. It was proof that she needed to keep going, or else worse stuff was going to happen.
But what was she to do at this point? She could take a bullet to the chest, but aim anywhere else, or come at her with a blade or bat? She was probably doomed. She needed to find something else to use, if only so she could fight back if she really needed to. But where could she find something like a weapon here? Anything that could have been was probably taken by Sakamochi and his men, and no one in their class was stupid enough to throw away a weapon when stuck in The Program. If she wanted something, she would either have to improvise, or...
No, NO! Megumi was N-O-T about to sink to that level! Not anytime soon anyway! Sure there were people in the class like Hirono and Mitsuko and Kiriyama and his gang, but she was not about to kill any of them! They weren't good people and she didn't want to be anywhere near them, but that didn't mean she wanted any of them dead! At this point the only people she could think of that she wanted dead were Sakamochi and his men, and even then she wasn't sure for most of those men. They were just doing there jobs and all-

For all she knew it could be anyone-from Yoshimi to Noriko, really. The only people she might trust it wasn't was Mizuho and Kaori-they know her voice, they wouldn't shoot her. Maybe also Sakura, but that was because she had talked about suicide in the classroom, and last Megumi checked suicidal people weren't exactly about to go on killing sprees.
