Mikko "Mike" Korhonen

#1

Post by Little Boy† »

Name: Mikko "Mike" Korhonen
Gender: Male
Age: 18
Grade: Grade 12
School: Aurora High School
Hobbies and Interests: Political Activism, Punk Music, Poetry and Spoken Word, Guitar

Appearance: Mike stands at roughly 5'7, and weighs around 140 pounds. Mike is considered to be quite an attractive kid, with olive green eyes and naturally dark blonde hair that just barely reaches his eyebrows. He's fond of dying his hair, currently however only the tips have been dyed a deep blue.

Mike's face is round, but not to the point of looking plump, his nose small and just slightly askew to the left, the result of a stray elbow at a concert last summer. He's been blessed with clear skin, and while Mike himself doesn't pay much attention to it, many girls at Aurora High find him to be extremely attractive. Mike doesn't exactly eat healthy, but a faster than average metabolism has prevented him from gaining much fat, keeping him lean and giving at least the impression that he works out, even if he doesn't have the muscle to back this up. The tips of his fingers are often calloused from his guitar playing, or dirty with pen ink. Preferring to write his poems outdoors, Mike often has a light tan on his skin.

Despite his natural good looks, Mike offsets this with his fashion sense. He consciously chooses to dress in ratty and torn clothing, often looking more like a homeless bum than a student. He adorns almost all of his clothing in punk badges and pins. The few articles of clothing not bought from cheap thrift stores are either band shirts, the majority being famous punk bands but a healthy amount of shirts bought from local Seattle bands, or hoodies or shirts bought off the internet. A great amount of his clothing slogans or designs are offensive by nature, and Mike has often got into trouble for wearing them during school hours.

On the day of the Aurora High abduction, Mike was wearing a purple sweater with the right sleeve torn clear off, the word "FUCK" written on it in sharpie. Beneath, he wore a long red shirt several sizes too large, along with a baggy pair of torn jeans.

Biography: Mikko Korhonen was born the second son of second generation Finnish immigrants, in an already burgeoning family, filled with aunts and uncles. His father, Jukka Korhonen, works as a plumber, while his mother Natalie works at the public library.

Mikko has one older brother, Markus, who no longer lives at home. After Mikko, his mother gave birth to five more children, Tobias, Erik, Adele, along with a set of twins, Alli and Heikki. A close-knit family still very much in touch with their Finnish roots and traditions, Mikko speaks the language fluently. His family however is very liberal, and is not bothered by Mikko altering his name to Mike at school for easier pronunciation. He is only referred to as Mikko by his parents and siblings.

With many mouths to feed, there was never much spare change to be found in the Korhonen household. However, the family never found itself wanting, due to generous relatives. Jukka's father, Taavi Korhonen, immigrated to the United States, bringing along with him the majority of the Korhonen extended family. Setting up shop in Seattle, Taavi opened up a small bread store. While modest, it was enough to get by, and in time it grew. Extremely altruistic, Taavi would often loan out or outright give money to other members of the Korhonen clan who were going through dire times. This behaviour grew into a Korhonen trademark- should a family member get themselves into trouble, three would come to their aid. From an early age, Mikko was aware of the sense of community within his household, and was raised to act selflessly, one of his defining features. Mikko is always ready to lend assistance to whoever comes asking, often for nothing in return.

Showing an interest in music, Mikko was bought a guitar for his tenth birthday. Initially, Mikko displayed an interest in Grunge music, however this soon morphed into an intense love for punk, and the punk music scene. The primary reason behind this was the often social and political issues displayed in punk music. Mikko, already strongly influenced by his family's altruistic behaviour, grew very passionate about issues such as classism, poverty, and social justice. Like him, Mikko's older and younger brothers Markus and Tobias, showed interest in the scene, Markus eventually moving out and living in a Seattle squat for a brief period of time, before going to into Journalism.

Influenced by this, Mikko began to learn the guitar in hopes of one day becoming part of a punk rock band with his younger brother, Tobias. However, while he possessed the raw talent, Mikko lacked discipline. Taught by his Grandfather, Mikko became a decent guitarist. However he displayed a much keener interest in writing songs than in playing them. Mikko has continued with the same guitar for the last eight years, but hasn't made a significant improvement. In contrast his writing and poetry, rife with social commentary and punk ideology, have gained Mikko much attention in the local scene. While he isn't a household name, Mikko has frequented and performed spoken word and slam poetry, even going so far as to win a few competitions.

Despite not agreeing with some of his more radical ideas, the Korhonen household has been fully accepting of Mikko's writing and tries to attend his shows whenever possible, even going so far as to offer him feedback. In an unusual twist for a punk, Mikko is not embarrassed by his parents and family's interest in his life. Realizing that many of his friends in the punk community come from broken homes or worse, Mikko cherishes the attention his family shows him and has a good relationship with his parents and siblings.

School-wise, Mikko has always been a bright student, and quick to make friends. Lacking the awkwardness prone to most teenagers, Mikko made a habit of striking up conversations with anyone loitering nearby, and was a frequent contributor in the more social science orientated classes, such as history and politics. Despite being extremely smart and often described as the "Intellectual" among his friends, Mikko is more than a bit of an idealist. Mikko identifies himself as an Anarcho-Communist. While he is passionate about his beliefs and quick to identify with them, Mikko is very cautious and prefers planning over blind emotion, conscious of the stereotype's people associate with anarchists and working to undermine them rather then reinforce them. Despite this, his opinion is not wildly held and no matter how much planning or thought he can put into his arguments, he is met with disapproval constantly. The majority of this disapproval Mikko puts down as ignorance. While this isn't the most rational response, Mikko stubbornly refuses to admit any defeat. This is an unfortunate trend with Mikko, in all facets of his life.

In other subjects, Mikko does fairly well, baring one exception. Mikko has required help frequently in mathematics, and had to complete several courses in summer school in order to graduate with the rest of his class.

Mikko is very active in the various arts and creative writing clubs at Aurora High. His brother Markus previously attended the same school, and his younger brother's Tobias and Erik attend Aurora in the 11th and 9th Grades respectively.

Oddly enough, Mikko has never had many problems with school authorities. A part of this is due to Mikko not wanting to fulfill his "stereotypical" role as a young punk, but just as equally Mikko doesn't see reason to argue over petty problems that are at best, minor inconveniences in his day. The most rebellious Mikko behaves is when he's flaunting the dress policy by wearing offensive clothing, or questioning a teacher and disrupting class. This isn't to say that Mikko is content with the way society is. He is a very critical at times, but doesn't see the value in committing misdemeanour offences to advance a political movement; especially considering he is only in high school. He has a nasty habit of asking questions and demanding the reasoning behind every ruling however, refusing to follow directions blindly unless he is convinced of their merit.

Advantages: Mikko is unfailingly polite, and enjoys making friends. His strong family has made him naturally altruistic and quick to support others, things that could win him allies very easily. He's an intellectual, and can easily use his words to rally others around him.
Disadvantages: Mikko often discredits those who disagree with him, calling them ignorant. He's stubborn, and doesn't like it when he's told so. Physically he is competent, but he is more of a thinker than a fighter. Mikko will question anyone who attempts to order him around, which could annoy his allies very quickly and hamper any alliances he finds himself in.
