Gene Hackman had it easier in The Poseidon Adventure

Open, a little before noon Day 2

The open deck of the cruise ship is still a fairly cramped expanse—stairways and access points to the bowels and corridors are numerous, as are ladders over the edge, and a number of lifeboats provide potential cover. Elsewhere, benches and folding chairs create small circles suitable for conversation. From the deck, one can take in almost all of the flotilla with a little walking; only the clipper ship's crow's nest offers a higher vantage point.

((Dale Hawthorne continued from I hate to bug you in the middle of dinner))

"How the fuck did I end up here?"

Dale looked over the railing and the wide expanse of the Flotilla. It was ridiculous to see it from this high up. He couldn't understand how something like this could be constructed. It was that puzzlement that led Dale to the deck of the cruise ship.

Dale, in his attempt to get to one of the places he decided to travel to last night, had to weave through the jetties in a sad attempt to reach the shop or restaurant. From the way the flotilla was set up, and accounting the danger zones near the yacht, Dale elected to move through the cruise ship to somehow make his way to the other side. Plus, it was hot and he wanted a break from being outside.

Of course, making it from one side of the ship to the other was harder than he figured. Now he was on the deck of the ship, nowhere closer to his goal.

"Ugh, whatever," he muttered.

There was a deck chair nearby and he moved over and plopped down, searching through his bag for a bottle of water. He took a long swig and held it in his mouth before swallowing. He let out a long sigh, using the bandanna chain to wipe his mouth and his forehead.

"Well, I've earned a break."

He didn’t know what was worse anymore.

Someone he saw as a friend had apparently stabbed someone to death, and had done it with someone else as well.

Team killing was apparently becoming common, if Ivan killing Giselle meant anything more than it somehow being justified.

His crush had been one of the victims of these team killings, and the circumstances behind that one meant he couldn’t even get the satisfaction of getting revenge of any kind, unless he wanted to sound like Mrs. Voorhees.

Junji fucking Yamada was actually here.

And Junji FUCKING Yamada had actually managed to kill someone.

[[RJ Blackburn continued from Sleepless in SEA-ttle]]

RJ didn’t really know Cristobal too well-not really the same social circles, and the mess with Marielle always made him hesitant to talk with either of them. Still, knowing Junji and just hearing what that Ritzy lady had to say about his death?

Let’s just say he couldn’t help but pity the poor guy.

RJ wasn’t entirely sure why he went back to the cruise ship. Maybe it’s the simple reason that it was a big area with plenty of space to hide if he needed to so. Maybe he just wanted to put the incident with Amy behind him and make memories here that weren’t bad.

Whatever the reasoning, he was there again, and it was time find a place to...

...was that his dentist? With the same bandana as him?! Relaxing on a lawn chair!?

“Dale? Is that you?”

Was this really happening? Or had he officially lost his mind?

((Eric Cunningham continued from Revise Script))

The arrival of Dale was a good sign. The arrival of the rifle boy was less so.

Eric had been lucky to find his way through the cruise ship unimpeded, and thus far he had been successful in avoiding attention. He'd planted himself behind some of the stairs, made himself comfortable with his sword and gun in hand, and waited.

The decision had been a difficult one. He needed an area with traffic, or he'd just be sitting around doing nothing. That would keep him relatively safe, but it wouldn't get him out of here. He couldn't afford to play it passively; other students were already killing. Eric doubted all of them were intent on the same goal as him, and definitely weren't going to be approaching it as methodically as he, but it was necessary he pick up the pace and get an early lead.

Eric was mildly annoyed by the way they described his attack on Cassini. 'Director's vision'...what tripe. Was that all he was? Not the patient, cunning winner he was aiming to be, but his one hobby? Sure, his one hobby was important to him he supposed. Perhaps this would be a helpful perception when he was actually a director, but the nickname chafed nonetheless.

It took a few hours before anyone showed up. Eric was a little surprised to recognize the individual; Dale was one of those people you just passively were aware of. The type who was to full of himself he spilled everywhere. Eric doubted he was very well-liked. A decent enough target as any. Eric had waited, breathing slowly and quietly, to make sure Dale was alone and unarmed. He didn't have a gun or anything. He was clearly not on high alert. He was an easy target. Eric just needed to go and do it.

Before he could make a move, though, there was a new addition. Eric did not recognize this boy, save that he was short and otherwise unremarkable looking. Two people made this more difficult, especially since one of them was carrying a large rifle. Eric wasn't sure what their relationship was other than 'short boy did not attack Dale on sight', which was unhelpfully vague. He didn't think Dale was armed, if that bunch of bandanas he had was his weapon, and Eric didn't know why else you'd tie a bunch of bandanas together like that. But the rifle had his attention. Eric didn't know a lot about guns, but that one looked real, and dangerous. He was kind of envious; he was stuck with the Zip 22, one of the worst guns ever made, and that shrimpy-looking guy had something much more effective.

Still, Eric's current armaments weren't enough that he felt comfortable in a two-against-one scenario, even with the jump and even if he could be sure he'd land a decisive shot on rifle boy. Too risky. He would have to see how their interaction went, and ready himself to take advantage of the situation as best he could. Worse come to worst, he stayed put and nothing happened. If one of them was left alone and unprepared, he would just...make it quick, just like last time. He'd done it before, he could do it again. If he could get that rifle, all the better. That would help keep him alive.

Eric waited, breathing slowly and silently.

Dale laid back in the chair and let out another long sigh, letting his view turn up towards the sky. He tried to pick a point to focus on. Maybe a cloud, or a wayward seagull. Maybe there was an airplane he could spot too. Wouldn't that be interesting? To know your shitty Southwest flight passed over the flotilla. He could imagine a dumb kid with their nose pressed against the window trying to see if he could see any of the carnage.

"Fucking stupid..." Dale muttered to himself. "I hope that plane crashes..."

It was then he heard someone call out. He turned his head and saw RJ Blackburn.

"RJ?"

Dale knew RJ from Drama Club. RJ got the part of Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors. Not that Dale was upset; Orin Scrivello was more of a scene stealing role, and taking a smaller role here was better since he was trying to negotiate his Invitacion al amor role at the same time. He didn't really have any issues about that, nor any particular notes about RJ.

What did matter was that RJ had a big fuck-off gun on his persons, as well as a red bandanna around his forearm. Dale let out another sigh.

"Hi RJ," Dale said, waving to show off his own Kraken bandanna. "Please tell me you're not a team-killer like some of these fucks."

"Why would-"

That was about as far as RJ got with the question before realizing, yes, Dale had a point with that question. The announcements may have painted one team killing as accidental and the other as justified, but it wasn't like they could get any confirmation out here. Add to that the people that were killing being more unexpected, in some cases, and Dale had every right to worry about what RJ would do.

RJ let out a sigh of his own, more of an attempt at releasing the tension in him instead of being upset.

"No. I promise I'm not gonna kill anyone on our team."

Team killing already didn't make sense to him-why kill someone you can actually rely on in the middle of a show like this?-and even if he could, Dale? Sure, he could be a bit full of himself, but that wasn't exactly something that deserved a death sentence.

As far as RJ was concerned, the only way he'd be breaking that promise would be if someone on their team tried to kill him, and he really hoped it wouldn't come to that.

Though it raised a new question in him, those thoughts.

"Do you...know what's up with that, by the way? Like, it's not normal, right?"

It was probably a stupid question. What would Dale really know about these team killings? But...what would it hurt by asking?

Plus, any ideas on it might've helped tame the fear RJ was feeling, if his constant shifting from foot to foot meant anything.

This was not optimal.

The one good factor was that Eric had not been spotted as far as he could tell. The problem was that both of them were on the same team, and that team was not Eric's team. That meant their cooperation was all but assured, especially from the sound of their conversation. That meant he couldn't bank on them doing anything stupid to make it easier for him, and it likely meant they wouldn't be separating.

Bad news for Eric.

Biting his lip, Eric adjusted his posture slightly. This was not ideal, for sure, but he wasn't exactly screwed by it either. As long as neither of them spotted him, he could just stay here until they left. And if they didn't leave, they might hang around and let their guard down. If they did that, he could potentially get both of them, take the gun, and increase his count by two.

He just had to wait. So he did.

RJ told Dale that he wasn't interested in team killing, which only sorta gave Dale some relief. Sure, RJ could say he's not team killing, but that didn't mean everyone on Team Claudia wouldn't. Plus, even then, he still had to look at RJ as a potential enemy anyways. After all, wasn't that the point? To toss away all trust in your friends and peers because you've all been given life or death reasons to be selfish pricks?

RJ asked what Dale knew about the team killing. Dale shrugged.

"Not sure. I think they said one was an accident and the other was a revenge killing. My guess with the revenge killing was that one of them decided to either go for ten kills instead of team win, and the other won in the end."

Dale leaned back a bit in his seat.

"But yeah, that's all I can guess," Dale said. "I'm all for sussing out one's motivations, but this place is too unpredictable to be able to do that."

Dale sighed.

"Anyways, in case you're wondering, no, I haven't seen anyone else on the red team, and I haven't seen anyone who has killed or been killed. You?"

The answers Dale gave weren't exactly the ones RJ was looking for, but he wasn't even fully sure what he was trying to find out by asking. Whether or not people killed their team members happened much on previous seasons? How many seasons before this one even had teams? The only immediate season that came to his mind was season nine with Tina Whats-Her-Face, and she definitely didn't have any teammates to rely on or vouch for her.

All he knew for sure was that there were teams last season, if he remembered the speech at the beginning correctly, along with that ten kill rule.

And ten kills...would anyone really manage that? Would anyone even try it? It was one thing for people to kill to survive like how this show usually went, but killing ten of your classmates just to leave sooner? That kind of thinking...he couldn't help but feel his stomach tie itself in knots just trying to comprehend it.

So, RJ shoved it aside, for the time being. He was with a team mate, and said team mate just asked him a question he could answer.

"No, I-haven't run into anyone else on our team," he said, stumbling over his words at first before thinking a bit clearer. "I think...Amy tried to kill me. The other day. And after that, I...I found Maxine."

...

"I also shot out a window, which was cool, I guess."

Pretending everything was fine wasn't going to make everything fine. But he wasn't about to get some magical solution that made everything better, and the alternative was that he could have a panic attack or a psychotic break something along those lines, so pushing those feelings down seemed like the best decision at the time.

He could figure it out in therapy. Therapy could help future RJ deal with these issues.

((Gus Thicke continued from The Taste of Salt))

There was no way around going to the cruise ship if he wanted to cross the gap that had been filled with craters. Still carrying the cannonball with him he walked up, getting more and more convinced that he should eventually just throw it away. His arms were already hurting. Darn it, he just needed a map. Get the cheese, find Jasper and Shoshanna again and return to the shop. He had an aim but he still felt like he was walking around aimlessly.

When he approached the deck he saw two older boys, talking to each other. When he saw the bandanna on Dale's arm and RJ's one, Gus had a big smile on his face.

"Hey! You're also on the green team like me. What are the chances!"

Gus really felt relief. He wasn't sure why. He didn't feel that kind of relief when he discovered that Leslie was on his team, but it was cool that he had at least found another two Leslies, now that Leslie was gone...

Nah, not cool. That was a really bad thought, because Leslie can't just be replaced. That was an awful thought. Leslie was more than a teammate for Gus. Well, not really, because Gus didn't know him that well and if it weren't for SOTF they probably wouldn't have talked much. But the conversation he had with Leslie was nice. Leslie was a nice human being who couldn't be replaced.

Gus was just happy that he found his teammates, that's all he wanted to say with that.

RJ didn't have a whole lot to give Dale. Of course, it was important to know that some chick named Amy tried to kill to add her to the list of people to avoid. He also apparently found one of yesterday's victims, which Dale was fine not knowing more about. He heard enough about Maxine's death from Ritzy Daggers and was fine to leave it at that. Odds are there would be grislier deaths going forward as more people stopped giving a fuck.

Before Dale could reply, some dude came out bellowing about how great it was that they were all on the green team? Dale raised an eyebrow to show his incredulity.

"Try again, bud," Dale said, raising his wrist to show the bandanna. "These are red."

Dale figured this guy bet on the wrong side of the coin when he tossed it in the air. That didn't make him the best ally to think about, but hey, now they were up to three Krakens in one space, so that had to at least be intimidating to some degree. Maybe Dale could cruise with these guys for a while.

"I didn't realize this deck attracted krakens," he said to RJ.

Dale didn't ask for elaboration on Amy or Maxine, and as minor as that was, RJ was grateful. Just thinking about either girl made him feel bad. The former showed that he apparently needed to be more careful about who he thought he could trust-though the announcements had also done that job pretty well. The latter...well, she was dead. Actually, genuinely dead. And it was a horrifying sight. Who wouldn't feel bad thinking about her?

It felt like his heart skipped a beat as the sound of a new voice rung out on the deck, though when he looked in the new arrival's direction and actually heard what he had to say, the stress melted away. He was a team mate. He seemed friendly. Might've been colorblind, but that wasn't really important at the moment. What was important was that he had some allies now-ones he knew he could trust.

RJ smiled as he spoke. He was still nervous, but he didn't let it overpower the happiness he felt.

"Not sure about the chances, but I'm not gonna question it right now."

Dale made a point correct the new guy-Gus? He thinks his name is Gus-before making a comment to RJ specifically. Was a meant to be rude? Maybe, but he just saw them as a correction and a comment. Nothing meant to be mean, as far as he was concerned.

"Maybe if we're lucky the rest of the team will show up in five minutes," he joked. It wasn't that good, but it was a step up from the last joke he attempted while here.

It was as RJ was looking Gus(?) over a second time that he realized something. The guy had a cannonball and...the clothes on his back. No bag or anything else. Odd.

"Dude, where's your bag?"

He couldn't imagine someone dropping off their stuff somewhere. That risked someone coming across it and stealing it. Were they already stolen? Or did have a really good hiding place? Maybe he had other allies looking over it?

Or maybe RJ was just overthinking something simple. Only Gus(?) could answer that question.

What the fuck was tree boy doing here?

Well, logically, Eric new he hadn't just magically vanished, and he hadn't been in the announcements, so it wasn't completely implausible that he'd see the guy again. Realistically, it didn't change much about the situation, either. Eric hadn't intended to interact with the group anyway; having someone actively hostile towards him meant nothing.

Actually, come to think of it, this might prove beneficial. The small talk of his two other would-be targets had been interrupted by tree boy, who wasn't actually on their team. Was he color blind, or just stupid? Could be both, given what Eric already knew about him. If hostilities broke out, Eric could easily swoop in and take his shot while they were unprepared. He'd have to deal with gun boy first, but if he managed that, he wouldn't have much trouble dealing with the rest of them. Gus had a cannonball somehow, but that was hardly a threat.

Unfortunately, the situation seemed to quickly stabilize into small talk again. Eric frowned as the question about his bag was posed. No, it didn't matter. They could know it was him, but he had already been identified on the announcements, and if they didn't know he was here, knowing about his first efforts would accomplish nothing.

Ah, okay, so the fuckboi in front of him tried to tell him their bandannas were red when they obviously are green. Gus could see that Dale was just trying to troll him. Don't feed trolls, Gus was simply going to ignore that comment. Or maybe Dale was colorblind. Either way, Gus didn't like how both of them joked about him.

When RJ asked about his bag, Gus felt even more unwell. Well, he had to explain it to them, right? They were his teammates after all.

"Well, yesterday I was robbed. At the start of the show, actually. You know Eric? Big guy. He stole it. Robbed me. Watch out for that bastard."

Dale watched as RJ and the new guy discussed why the guy was deprived of supplies. Apparently, some fat fuck named Eric robbed him on the first day. Dale rolled his eyes a bit. He was going to let his mind be consumed with thoughts about how dumb it was that this guy let himself get robbed. But then he remembered where he heard the name "Eric" recently.

"Oh, wait. Eric. I think he killed that girl with the odd name," Dale noted, snapping his fingers. "Yeah, he was on the announcement this morning. Sounds like he stabbed her or something."

Dale sat up in his seat.

"Oh, right, and I remember now. He was that wannabe filmmaker guy who pissed off a lot of people with the ego proportional to his weight. Shit, you let that guy rob you?"

Dale rubbed the back of his head.

"I mean, it sucks that happened to you and you're lucky he didn't kill you like he did that girl, but damn. You must be equal parts pissed and scared of that guy now."

As the three speak a voice comes from Gus'.

"Hey guys! Good work meeting up with each other!

"Now if you work as a team you should be able to make some progress.

"Also if you do see that guy again you should totally beat him up."
