Nowhere to Hide

((Boy 021: Yoshitoki Kunibo continued from The White Knuckle Band.))

It had been a few hours since the events at the Clinic, a set of events he could more than bear to go without spending time dwelling over. He had indeed finally stopped to rummage through the bag with his assigned rations, brought back out of shock somewhat by his rumbling stomach. After rummaging through his pack underneath a fairly large tree, he pulled out a meager set of rations. Downing a quarter of a bottle of water and a few crackers, he leaned back against the tree. His tears had long since dried, but he couldn't shake the memory of Kazushi... The guy might have been an asshole, but he didn't deserve to die! Not like he did, and not at the hands of someone who was supposed to be his peer. Niida had done nothing that bad.

It was only about an hour and a half of sleep that he had gotten by nodding off under that tree, but he was awoken by a voice that he wished that he would never have to hear again.

Good morning my brave little warriors! My, have you not been busy?

That asshole, Kamon. The one who had needlessly ordered the death of his best friend. Hell, maybe if he had shown a little mercy, at least he would be able to hang out with the boy one more time. White hot rage boiled through his body as he listened to the annoucnement. Even though he hated the man more than anyone else in the world, he had to acknowlege that what he had to say would be useful. "Let's see... Stay the hell out of... C4, C5, B9, G8 and H4. Gotcha, thanks a ton. Now fuckoff." He pulled out his map, figuring it pertinent to mark them with the pencil he stole from the classroom. "Okay, I went north... I'm either in G9 or F9. I'm alright."

It took him a few minutes after the announcement had finished running through, but he finally processed a glaring absense of someone's name from that list. Kazushi Niida. "What the FUCK?" He exclaimed out into the open field he was sitting on. Kazushi's name hadn't been there. Kamon had said that there were sensors of life signs in the collars that they were wearing... It couldn't be a mistake. Did the collar break? Or was Kazushi alive? There was no way he could know... NO way he was going back there. Maybe he did just knock him out! Yeah! That had to be it... He knew he could never kill someone...

He sat cross legged for a while, just staring out, back towards the clinic. Maybe he'd see someone else... Someone who didn't want to play. Maybe they could escape. Maybe he could get the collar off, get a gun, and truly avenge Shuuya.

Yoshitoki groaned. Loudly. The sun was beating directly overhead of him, and he had a major headache from not eating enough. Over the past few hours, he had finally come to terms with the fact there was no way he was a murderer. Yet. It just didn't make sense. It had been almost an hour between when Kazushi dropped to the ground and the announcement, there was no way he was dying that slowly. However, it did leave him up the creek without a paddle; he had no weapon to speak of. And while he never intended to do anyone harm, he would still love to have a gun to flash at would be attackers would be a nice deterrent... And a small sigh of relief and reprieve on this green, tropical hell. He had no idea how long he'd been there, and frankly he didn't care to even look.

His thoughts drifted to his friends. First to Noriko. He had the biggest crush on her before all of this... And he still thought she was beautiful. He had never planned to tell her under normal circumstances, he was just way too shy. "But... These aren't normal circumstances..." He muttered to himself under his breath. Anyone who happened to be nearby would have definitely heard, although he didn't really care. Odds were that if someone was stalking him, he was kind of screwed anyways. Not that he wanted that to happen by any stretch.

Inevitably his thoughts drifted back to Shuuya. An involuntary shudder ran down his spine as he closed his eyes tight, a cinematic of his best friend's final moments burned into his eyelids, for the rest of his days. He needed to avenge his friend, he knew this much was true... But what did that even mean? He hadn't taken more than five seconds to actually figure out what it entailed. Now that he thought about it, he saw he had two real options. Escape, or revenge. He could save those resisting the game, and escape, thereby beating the system that poor Shuuya had succumbed to. Maybe even move to America to get away from it all... Heck, the way Shuuya used to talk about it, the place actually sounded pretty good. On the other hand, he could kill Kamon and the other soldiers... That would free all of the students, but what about those who had already gone crazy? And hell, how would he even go about killing a full compliment of trained soldiers? He was a kid.

He let out a soft sigh, leaning his head back against a tree. His eyes drifted shut, and in what seemed like an instant, he began to hear a voice rocking him out of his strong, deep sleep. The first real sleep he had actually gotten in almost a day now.

"Afternoon, children! I'm afraid teacher is disappointed with you! Only four deaths since the previous announcement. Chop chop now!"

The second announcement?!? Did I fall asleep or something? He jumped up from his position against the trunk of the tree, beading a little sweat from his brow with his sleeve. With a bit of panicked haste, Yoshi rummaged through his assigned bag, taking out the map. He still wasn't becoming desensitized to the sound of Kamon's voice. In fact, each word just sparked more hatred. And really, for good reason. He took note of the danger zones on the map quickly, marking each one with a big "X" over the area. He sighed softly, listening to the remainded of the crazed man's speech.

"This is dearest teacher wishing you love, cuddles and murder and signing off!"

Yoshi wasn't even sure if this man was all there! Was he an old winner of the program at one point himself? He was more than crazy enough to be, and he'd seen some extremely broken people make their way out of these games... He took a moment to open up his little pamphlet, looking at the faces of his peers. Only thirty of them remained... He needed a way to note how long he had left, but at the same time he wanted to be respectful... And just like that, a eureka moment. Next to each of those who had passed on, he drew a small, crude, pencil version of the Buddhist 'Wheel of Life'. He let out an extremely exaserbated sigh, placing the pencil in the binding of the notebook and pushing himself off of the ground. Sliding his posessions except for the map back into the bag, he looked for his next destination. He was running low on food. He could either go to the Residental District... No, that would be swarming with people. His finger traced the map, until he noticed a nearby tangerine grove. That's perfect. It's probably less populated than the residential area, and I can finally get some food. Tracing a quick path with his finger to ensure he wasn't about to trapse through any danger zones, he hiked his back high on his shoulders, and started moving.

"It's amazing what trauma can do to change a person... Fuck, I need to find Noriko." And just like that, he had a plan.

As he stood and began to wander towards the grove, his nose detected a faintly sickening smell... He looked around, looking for the source. Finding nothing, he continued to move, trying to hold down what little food was still in his stomach. Unbeknown to him, not 500 feet away on the other side of a rolling hill laid the freshly deceased body of Yuko Sakaki, sprawled dead in the grass. It was probably a blessing that Yoshitoki was either too oblivious or distracted to notice it, one more corpse scarred into his retinas was the last thing the poor boy needed. Hell, it was the last thing that anyone on this God Forsaken island needed.
