When Betting On High Card Pays Off

Even a straight flush can lose every now and then (Private)

This ship is a replica of a traditional clipper ship, painstakingly built to recreate the proper design elements and functionality. Originally used for filming and for theme tours in Southeast Asia, it was badly damaged when an inexperienced captain scraped a pier during a storm, and was put into dry dock pending repairs. Ultimately, however, insurance proceedings saw it declared a total write-off and sold for scrap. It has gashes in the sides that have been crudely but competently repaired, and inside the ships has wide expanses of wooden floor spanning two decks. The rigging is the most impressive part, with a crow's nest that serves as the highest point of the arena, should one dare venture up the rope ladder. A rather anachronistic yet fully functional cannon has been mounted on the deck, fixed in the vague direction of a section of outer marina, though only three cannonballs are present, each massive sphere tucked away in the back of the very bottom deck of the ship.

Did Jasper really think Fisk was racist? Not really. Last he checked the guy the scarred boy had stabbed-Seth? Was that his name?-was as white as a sheet, and he'd expect an actual racist piece of shit to go after anyone darker than a paper bag before killing anyone that was white.

Would he ever take back the insult once he was off this floating death arena?

Like Hell he would. You call Jasper Suárez-King shit, he'll call you shit right back.

He did give Bacchia a bit of a side-eye at her comment, though it wasn't for very long.

"You can't tell me that that thought didn't cross your mind when making those things. They're too similar and you know it."

He sighed.

"But, fair enough."

Jasper voted to stay silent as he swung the hook, aiming to take out Fisk's throat.

Let the game begin.

“Straight to the point, Bacchia. I like that about-“

And away we go.

Jasper swung first. Now, at this point, Fisk had a few options, should he step back? Step forward and eat it by the bar or duck?

As the hook came close, option two and option three seemed the less likely of the choices as all Jasper had to do to follow up from the swing is pull back, and the hook would find itself inside Fisk either way, so he backpedal-

*SSSHRIGH*

Fisk was caught stumbling to his right in front of Bacchia as the hook snagged hold of his mask the last second he stepped back. Fisk stumbled backwards from it, one hand holding his exposed but still put together neck as the other arm extended out, pointing the shiv at Jasper. The lower portion of his mask had opened up, just below the chin.

Alright, that was the second biggest shock this morning. Jasper was fast! He caught him slipping and overthinking. Even worse, he caught him at the time where Fisk didn’t even need to, tactics and fast thinking wins out over the perfect plan when you got a group. No more of that here...

He stepped to the left of Bacchia and James, speaking tersely. “ I go left, you go right.”

“Pincer.” Fisk nodded to them as he spoke.

He turned back to Jasper and started running from the outer left hand side.

Bacchia hated to admit that Jasper was making a good point about the masks and she was definitely going to make sure to discuss it with the others later on after they were done with Jasper. She also raised an eyebrow at Fisk trying to compliment her in the middle of a fight before getting cut off when Jasper attacked first. She couldn't focus on Fisk trying to flirt or whatever, Jasper was one fast dude and she couldn't underestimate him during all of this.

Jasper had only managed to rip up a part of the mask and Bacchia was realized that it was not Fisk's throat. She couldn't afford to lose another one immediately in the group after losing Giselle not that long ago. She needed to take action.

Fisk gave an order about doing a pincer on Jasper and all she could do was smirk behind the mask, nodding briefly before focusing her attention back on Jasper.

Two against one was easier than her trying to take Jasper on alone. She would lose if she did so.

Bacchia started moving to the right side at a steady pace as she wasn't the fastest runner but she wasn't going to screw this up.

She had the sword ready at a pointed angle and was ready to impale Jasper with it if she had to.

James just... stood there.

...And he watched.

...And he thought about the things he might have done differently to end up anywhere else but where he was at this moment.

...And about how he hoped Fisk and Bacchia ended up okay, but also how he didn’t really want them to be in this fight or to kill Jasper, even though that’s what they decided on themselves.

...And he stood there.

Two against one. They really should have tried to better their own chances of winning. Forced Blondie to join in or something. It wouldn’t assure their victory, that much Jasper was certain of, but it would’ve given them a chance.

As it stood? He was going to wipe the floor with these two.

He was a bit disappointed that his first shot didn’t find its mark-it was so close!-but he didn’t have time to emote at the moment. Bacchia and Fisk were making their move, and they were being obvious about it. Trapping him on both sides wasn’t a bad idea.

It did leave him to ponder the possibility of taking Blondie hostage, however. The boy had yet to move, unlike his allies, and threatening to kill him if Scarboy didn’t sacrifice himself probably would’ve been effective.

But Jasper had some measure of morality left. Blondie was the only one that had wanted to leave from the start. He didn’t even get involved once it was started. As easy as it would be to hold the hook up to his throat, he’d let the option pass him by this time.

For the fight itself, Jasper was a bit conflicted. Bacchia was clearly the bigger threat-her weapon had a much further reach than Fisk’s, so the sooner he took her down, the sooner he could kill him without risk of her stabbing him. He mainly just wanted to kill Fisk, though. Maybe leave the other two so they knew not to mess with him or his group. He knew some ways of taking people down without killing them, but not only were they all unarmed techniques, something he couldn’t risk against two armed opponents, but very few really crossed his mind in the moment.

He really was making this challenge for himself, wasn’t he?

But hey. The biggest gambles were always the most fun ones.

He made his decision, and he quickly rushed toward Fisk, aiming high yet again. Going for the neck twice in a row would be boring, though, and Jasper needed to get that knife out of Fisk’s hands.

Hopefully going for the shoulder of the arm holding the knife would take out two birds with one stone.

((Shoshanna Kowalczyk continued from cheesed to meet you))

Shoshanna jumped up in the hammock when Ritzy Dagger's voice forced its way into the cabin. She muttered an obscenity under her breath and she quickly leapt out of the hammock and landed feet first on the ground where her bag laid. Before going to sleep the night before, Shoshanna laid her notepad with the deaths out on top so she could quickly grab and update it. She had to find out who was dead, who was playing, and what areas were off limits.

She quickly wrote on the paper, continuing from the list given at the last announcement.

Fisk + Vasily --> Seth (FV alliance)
Eric --> Cassini (stabbed)
Diffenbakia (sp?) --> Calla (friend kill)
Matias --> Leslie (ass. suicide? mercy kill?)
Junji --> Cristobal (water kill?)
Ivan --> Giselle (team kill, revenge)

Shoshanna was upset to see Leslie was dead. Maybe if he stayed on the ship he would be alive. She didn't know the details of his death beyond what Daggers had to say, which definitely miffed her. However, there were definitely more important details to find. Two people were working to kill one, and there was a lot of revenge and betrayal this round. They were on the second day of play, so now all the choices they made were going to matter.

Once she got the names of the danger zones down, Shoshanna looked around. Marion and Nadine had stayed the night talking escape plans. She could see Jasper wasn't here, so he must have been left in the crow's nest.

"Hey guys," she told the ladies after organizing her notes, "we got a lot to do today, and we better get to it. I'll get Jasper and-"

Shoshanna then heard some noises outside the cabin and froze. Crap. Was danger finally at her doorstep? Shoshanna reached over and grabbed her flare gun.

"Wait here," she told Marion and Nadine.

Shoshanna hurried over to the door, her loose ponytail bobbing at her side. She kept the flare gun low and slowly opened the door.

She really should have been surprised at what was going on outside, but she shouldn't have been considering the show she was on.

Jasper was fighting two people with bags on their heads, while a third guy just watched. One bag face had been ripped open, but Shoshanna still couldn't tell who it was. It was a boy and girl at least, both in dark colors.

Shoshanna quietly stepped out of the cabin, trying to keep the closing of the door as quiet as she could. This was bad. This trio threatened her, Jasper, the girls, and their plans to break the game and get out. Shoshanna knew she wasn't a physical threat, and she had barely lucked out getting a ranged weapon. This was a shit or get off the pot moment for her, and she wasn't going to hesitate. She had to save her friend.

She raised the flare gun. She had only one shot to use. She had spent some time yesterday looking over how to use it. She just had to make sure she could fire and hit one of the attackers and not Jasper.

She squinted one eye and took aim. All she needed was the chance to hit one of them, and maybe Jasper could get the upper hand to defeat the other. She traced the movement of the three, trying desperately to find the guaranteed hit that would take down one of the bagheads.

Between the two of them, Jasper focused on Fisk more than Bacchia. James was... there, and he was starting to think that maybe leaving him with Keegan and taking Vasily would’ve been the better idea.

Still, Fisk would do his job as the bait, put himself in harms way, stay just out of reach of Jasper, and let Bacchia close the distance on her own, as James seemed intent to stare.

Fisk chose to continue moving further to the left, keeping himself out of reach from the hook as best as he could, narrowly dodging a swipe to the shoulder.

From behind Jasper, Fisk saw a new arrival, one who was armed. As Fisk and Bacchia were already occupied, that left one individual who apparently needed a motivational chat when they got back to the cruise liner. It’s not like one of them were already dead or anything.

“James wake the fuck up!”

James needed to wake up. Why did James need to wake up?

Fisk and Bacchia and Jasper were still fighting and Fisk nearly got messed up but it was actually just the mask so everyone was doing fine in their attempts to kill each other but then there was another person that had a gun.

Oh, yeah. That.

It was a girl from school, Shoshana something. She might have been an underclassman, and now she was pointing a gun right into the middle of the melee.

James didn’t like what Fisk and Bacchia were doing here, he told them that, but what was he going to do if they got shot and sliced up by this duo? They were still his friends, right? Not just friends, but some of the only allies that might stand by him when Ivan came knocking.

So James panicked and ran at the girl, arms flailing wildly in the air.

“W-Wait! Just- Don’t shoot! Y-You’ve gotta stop!” He shouted, closing the distance as fast as he could, hoping to just barrel through and knock the gun away from the girl's hands. Then... well, he hadn't figured that part out yet.

Bacchia was more focused on just getting Jasper as she could hear a commotion behind her and it sounded like James was trying to distract someone else that was there. Well, she was glad that James had grown some balls to actually do something for once. Even if he did sound like he was panicking out. Well, after she was done with Jasper....

She could help him with that unnecessary disturbance.

She was pacing more closer to Jasper and she more or less edged herself behind Jasper's backside. She forced herself to run a bit faster to stop Jasper from hurting Fisk. Honestly, she really wished Fisk would stop putting himself in danger for them.

"I. Got. You." She said in a calm, cold-like tone.

Before swinging her sword to strike at Jasper's exposed back.

Two swings, and two strikes. If this were baseball, Jasper would have had one last chance before he struck out. Luckily he never really liked baseball and didn't follow their rules. Even if it took five swings to do it, he was certain he would kill Fisk while he was on this ship, or at least throw him off it.

Then Blondie decided to make a commotion. The fight wasn't focusing on him at the moment, so Jasper couldn't help but look in the direction he was going and...

Shoshanna, the apparent fucking saint or something, was trying to save him.

In better circumstances, he would've been incredibly grateful. Even if he could handle himself, any help in a life or death situation was going to be appreciated, no matter the circumstances.

In that moment, though, he really wished she could've just been selfish and ran back in the ship.

He had to get close, kill Blondie before he did something stupid, and-

Not yet.

Jasper spun on the balls of his foot, narrowly dodging the sword. It might've nicked something, but in the moment he was too hopped up on adrenaline to notice if it did.

He swung the hook again, and the clashing of metal connecting as well as resistance was the sign that third time was the charm for it to hit something.

He was tempted to note how stupid it was to say anything before you attack someone, but the decision to stay silent won out.

Fisk wasn't in view now, and the struggle between Blondie and Shoshanna was barely visible at the moment.

Jasper had two options in his head at that point. Either continue trying only kill Fisk, and risk being too late to save Shoshanna, or use deadly force against Bacchia and end this sooner so he can assure that his ally doesn't end up dead.

Mental Note: Apologize to Bacchia's family once you get home.

Jasper ignored the scraping sounds and potential sparks flying off the hook grinding against the sword. His mind was too busy focusing on preventing the sword from touching him, tackling into the goth girl, and staying standing after the fact

A sword isn't exactly useful when there's no chance to move it, after all.

Shoshanna tried to take aim, but the ripped bagged freak yelled at "James" to wake up. Shoshanna turned and realized the third guy was now running for her. Dammit. Of course. No matter how quiet she was, she'd still be noticed standing on a wide open deck of a ship. Now the blonde guy was charging at her trying to get her to stop.

"Shit," she blurted as she took off.

She couldn't go back into the cabin or she'd risk Marion and Nadine being involved. She couldn't run towards Jasper without potentially getting in the way of the bagged freaks. She simply bolted towards the edge of the ship, heading towards the side facing the nearest jetty. Shoshanna knew she couldn't just get off the ship since the narrow jetties would make her easy to catch or to be targeted on.

Thus, the only option she saw fit was to run around the perimeter of the deck, hopefully to one of the higher portions, and evade James as long as she could.

As she reached the railing, Shoshanna turned back and saw that James was much closer to her than she anticipated.

Dammit. I should have done more cardio.

Shoshanna tried to walk along the railing's direction, stepping closer to the ramp. She only had one flare shot, and it looked like she'd have to use it on this guy instead. She swung the flare gun towards James.

"Stay back or burn alive!" she threatened James, her brow furrowing and her voice shaky.

Her arm shook as she held the gun towards the boy. Was she really going to be able to do this?

And now the gun was out of the equation thanks to James. One less interruption for the time being. That’s more like it.

Just left the loose end between Fisk and Bacchia now.

This was a game of attrition and wits, but more importantly than that, numbers. Sure Jasper was strong, and fast, and capable of doing some damage in a one on one fight, especially with a weapon that has some actual reach. However, a hook only has one point, and an unwieldy one at that. Sure he could bludgeon him and Bacchia around all day, but to actually impale one of them is a different story.

Jasper was tiring himself out and losing focus. Sure he got Bacchia on the ground, sure, he was stronger than her, but he turned his back on Fisk. It’s the beginning of the end for him now.

Fisk’s metal heels clanked along the wood as he closed the distance. He raised his shiv, and slammed it down.

Bacchia should have been smarter about keeping her mouth shut when attacking someone from behind. She felt herself getting a bit off-guard when Jasper spun around too fast to counter her attack and she felt the hook's metal part clanging against her sword with ease. She was thankful that she had a tight grip on it and she was about about to make a move.

However....

She felt Jasper's weight slamming into her and she had felt the air being knocked out of her. She felt her body thud onto the ground and she felt a bit dazed and winded in that moment. She had almost dropped the sword in the process and she knew that she had to move before Jasper could hurt her more.

"U-Urgh...! Bastard...." She wheezed under her breath with a bitter mumble.

She glanced up at Jasper and the hook warily, waiting to see an opening.

Jasper could only hear what was going on with Shoshanna, but he felt he'd be proud if he could see it. There was definitely some fear behind her voice, but sometimes that fear was the exact sign that someone meant what they said, especially when it was a threat.

It was gonna suck, smelling burning flesh, clothes, and hair, he preferred that over the alternative of Shoshanna being dead.

He was almost tempted to ask Bacchia what she expected. This was Survival of the Fittest. If you don't give it your all in a fight, you end up dead. That was how it worked.

It was a shame she was going to die like this, even Jasper had to admit. He hadn't exactly done this before so going through her neck with a hook was definitely going to be a me-

Clank-clank clank-clank clank-clank

Again Jasper turned his body to avoid the attack, and while he could definitely feel pain from it having connected, he already knew it was better than it could've been. A knife graze on his side was better than a punctured liver, or something more vital.

And like last time, as he turned, he swung the hook, aiming at around the neck area once more, though he didn't care in the moment where exactly it hit so long as it something.

Only two thoughts crossed his mind in that moment.

Why hadn't he turned the hook towards Fisk when he started swinging?

And who the fuck wears shoes that make noise when you walk?!

Jasper was doing well for himself, especially considering he was outnumbered.

ES10: AKENO KUDO CONTINUED FROM I've Passed the Point of no Return

Fighting two on one was harder than most people realised and it wasn’t anything he had ever learnt or something she had ever taught him as far as she knew, but he was handling it pretty well. He was making sure to keep them from surrounding him and he was going on the offensive to break the pincer before it closed; the same things she would have done in his position. It would have been better to go after the girl with the sword first, in her opinion, but she couldn’t fault him for wanting to take out the one he likely saw as the easier target first.

He would win this. She had faith in that.

All by himself.

When she had decided on the clipper ship as her next destination, Akeno had no idea this was what would be waiting for her. She had wanted to find more people that she could pick off, or failing that a place to rest for a while, but instead had found a fight in full swing. It didn’t seem like either side was looking to let the other walk away alive either.

Normally that would have been enough to make her leave, as she prioritised self-preservation over the chance to vulture a kill from whoever won, but she found herself glued in place once she saw who was involved. It wasn’t even the hooded figures, of whom she had been warned several hours ago, who caught her attention first; instead it was the mostly shirtless giant that they were facing off against.

Jasper.

Her friend and sometimes student.

Instead of leaving she ducked down before anyone could see her and peeked her head over the side of the ship just enough to watch proceedings.

Even though she wasn’t aiming for the team win, it was still disappointing to see his bandana didn’t match hers. More than disappointing actually; seeing the black band on his arm put a knot in her stomach.

A part of her wanted to jump into the mix and help Jasper out, even the odds a little bit; she even took a step forward to do just that, until the urge was smothered under a larger, more sensible part of her. It was too risky with so many dangerous weapons in play. Akeno had nothing by comparison, no way of protecting herself from being gutted by an oversized hook or catching a shiv between her ribs in the confusion. It wasn’t worth it.

Even if she didn’t get herself killed and they won, what then? Jasper was on another team. It was technically possible for them both to make it out of here with the ten kills and then a team win, but she knew Jasper; he wasn’t the type to just sit by while she killed nine more people to earn herself a ticket home. They couldn’t team up, as much as she would have liked to.

He didn’t look like he needed the help anyway.

Jasper was focusing on the sword girl now, pushing her to the deck and trying to angle his hook towards her neck. There was a brief moment of panic when the other boy rushed towards his exposed back, but Jasper heard him coming and avoided the worst of it. You could tell they weren’t good at this, even when they managed to flank him they always gave themselves away somehow; that’s why you didn’t gloat in fights. Amateurs.

There wasn’t anything to gain here. No reason to stay, especially since she already knew how this would play out.

Staying was a waste of time. She should leave.

Akeno’s fist clenched at her side.

Come on Jasper.
