Noah Davis

Post by Dogs231 »

Name: Noah Davis
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Grade: 11th
Hobbies and Interests: Verisimilism, Western Fiction, Romance, Animal Care, Carpentry, Walking, Gardening, the Guitar.

Gift: Finger Guns
Power Details: Noah's Gift allows him to materialize an object equivalent in size, shape, and construction to a 9-millimeter bullet near the tip of his finger. A reaction will then occur, as an explosion occurs in the projectile's base, which ignites the gunpowder inside the shell casing of the object. The change in pressure launches the bullet forward. Noah activates his Gift by using his hand to mimic a handgun. He must raise his thumb above his fist to act as a hammer and extend his index and middle fingers perpendicular to his fist to act as a barrel.
Limitations and Drawbacks: The explosion that launches the bullet occurs near the tip of his index and middle fingers, and as a result, causes damage to his fingers when he uses his Gift. He also suffers from recoil, which can cause his joints and wrists to ache or, with overuse, dislocate. As a result of the lack of a barrel to stabilize the bullet, Noah's Gift is only accurate at close range.

Appearance: Noah stands at 6'0" and weighs about 165 lbs. As a result, he is both tall and slim. He is in shape, and he has some muscle from physical labor. His dark brown hair is thick and wavy and often left unstyled. He has soft brown eyes. Noah rarely has acne, and his complexion is good. He rarely needs to shave, as he does not grow facial hair quickly. He is Caucasian, but his skin is somewhat tan from time spent outside in the sun.

Noah has a distinctive style, though it is out of personal preference and sentimental value rather than any desire to stand out. A typical outfit for Noah consists of brown leather boots, jeans, a leather belt, a button-down shirt, and he almost always wears a brown Stetson hat, a gift from his father. On the day of the abduction, Noah wore his usual attire. He wore brown leather boots, jeans, a leather belt, a red plaid flannel button-down shirt, and his brown Stetson hat.

Background:
  • Noah Davis was born in College Station, Texas, to James Davis and Melissa Williams. He had no brothers or sisters, as complications from Noah's birth resulted in Melissa's passing shortly after giving birth to Noah. After Melissa's death, James opted to return to Bend, Oregon, his hometown, with Noah. James then began work there as a veterinarian.
  • Noah, a shy child, had to take time to adjust to a school environment filled with lots of new people. He often preferred books and drawings to other children. He paid attention to his teachers and enjoyed learning new things.
  • Noah discovered his Gift much later than most, at the age of nine. The first time it manifested, he had attempted to mimic a scene in a Western film and accidentally shattered a glass door. James immediately consulted a professional, who advised that Noah be placed on mild power suppressants to prevent his power from becoming a danger to others.
  • During one school vacation, Noah was interested in learning to play his father's guitar, so his father purchased one for him and taught him how to play it. Creating music became a relaxing activity for Noah, and he has improved significantly over time and is now a competent musician.
  • As Noah grew older, James decided that Noah should learn firearm safety due to how his Gift operated. He learned to handle his powers with care and responsibility and took the lessons with great solemnity. He has a deep understanding of his Gift as a result.
  • In the second-to-last year of middle school, an incident occurred while Noah was walking home from school. A student from the year above him had discovered Noah's power from a note on a teacher's desk and followed him home. He tried to convince Noah to demonstrate his powers, but Noah refused, which made him angry. He physically forced Noah, who was not under the effects of his power suppressants, to use his powers and became injured in the process. Noah called emergency services, who brought the wounded student to the hospital. At first, Noah was removed from the school system but was re-instated when it became clear that he was not responsible.
  • Noah was severely shaken by the incident and developed a fear of both loud noises and bright flashes of light, and attended therapy to help him process what occurred. His medication was also increased in strength to prevent it from wearing off at inopportune times. Through this time, Noah received support from his father, who assured him that he handled the situation as well as he could have done. While Noah made significant progress in his therapy, he remained somewhat fearful of loud sounds or bright lights.
  • As a result of his fears, Noah was left unable to watch his favorite television shows and movies for several years due to the prevalence of guns in Western Fiction. He explored new genres to compensate and became fascinated by Verisimilist works, finding a world without powers to be happier and imagining his life in one to be less troubled.
  • As Noah was going into high school, his father decided to purchase a vacant plot of land with money he had saved. Noah and his father worked to build a house with some outside help. Noah became interested in carpentry as a result of this, and when construction finished, he began to create small pieces of furniture in his free time.
  • For a project in sophomore year, Noah grew a small plant in a pot. He enjoyed the project so much that he asked permission to turn some of their plot of land into a small garden. His father agreed, and Noah began to grow plants at home. Noah grows a mix of flowers, herbs, and vegetables and feels great pride in his work as a gardener.
  • Academically, Noah performs well. His favorite subjects tie into his hobbies, such as Music, Literature, and Earth Science. He is interested in Social Studies, but only when it focuses on the American Frontier. In other classes, he often finds himself uninterested.
  • Socially, Noah has many friends as a result of his politeness and empathy. Most of these friendships result from mutual interests, but others result from simple kindness and chance meetings. However, some students use his sensitivity to hurt him, and he has a low view of those individuals.
  • Romantically, Noah is single. He is bisexual and has been open about it for about two years. He does not take relationships lightly and views them as a serious matter that requires devotion and commitment. As a result, he is very picky in terms of finding a partner. He one day hopes to be in a long-term relationship with an individual who he loves.
  • Noah is very close with his family. He and his father have a close bond, and the two are supportive of one another. He also has a close relationship with his grandparents on his father's side. His relationship with his relatives on his mother's side is cordial but distant, as he has only met them a few times during family gatherings.
  • Noah is not settled on what he plans to do in the future, but he assumes he will have time to decide before he graduates. He is considering applying to Texas A&M University to study Veterinary Medicine.
Personality: Noah is soft-spoken, polite, and kind. However, he can sometimes be highly strung and anxious and is very sensitive emotionally. He is empathetic and has a great love and appreciation for life and living beings. He prefers to see the beauty in his environment and those around him and prefers not to think negatively. To his friends, Noah is incredibly supportive. He welcomes them to share their problems or feelings with him whenever needed.

Hi Dogs. I'm here with the axe, as promised. Let's start with his Gift.
Limitations and Drawbacks: The explosion that launches the bullet occurs near the tip of his index and middle fingers, and as a result, causes damage to his fingers when he uses his Gift. He also suffers from recoil, which can cause his joints and wrists to ache or, with overuse, dislocate.
Something that you might not have considered, but guns have barrels in order to stabilize a bullet's trajectory. Explosions are chaotic, and a bullet firing completely on its own is essentially a big chunk of shrapnel; it's just as likely to go straight as it is to go off in any other direction that's vaguely "forward". To that end, I would add another limitation that it's basically impossible for him to aim and actually hit a target at anything beyond point-blank.

The rest of the actual content is fine. The problem is that there's way too much of it. Backgrounds are not biographies, they are supposed to be straight and to the point as possible. They do not need to cover every event in a character's life, or how they felt about everything that had happened to them, or even every hobby (in fact, most characters wouldn't need to cover most of their hobbies). Any given bullet point should generally be no longer than one or two sentences, unless those sentences are very short or extremely vital. When in doubt, err on the side of brevity. If we need more, we can ask for it. Unnecessary fluff, which is in nearly every bullet point in your kid's background, does nothing but bog the process down.

With that out of the way, let's get to it.
Noah Davis was born in College Station, Texas, to James Davis and Melissa Williams. He had no brothers or sisters. At the time, both of them were students at Texas A&M University, where they had met. James was studying Veterinary Medicine, and Melissa was studying Agricultural Science. Complications from Noah's birth resulted in Melissa's passing shortly after giving birth to Noah. While James was saddened, he was determined to finish his college education and raise Noah as well as he could, even if that meant doing it alone.
When James completed his degree, he opted to return to Bend, Oregon, his place of birth, with Noah. He wanted to be around his family, who he believed could help him raise the young Noah. He also was offered a lucrative position at Bend Veterinary Clinic.
The profile is not about Noah's parents. Both of these bullet points should be cut to the following:

"Noah Davis was born in College Station, Texas, to James Davis and Melissa Williams. He had no brothers or sisters, as complications from Noah's birth resulted in Melissa's passing shortly after giving birth to Noah. After Melissa's death, James opted to return to his hometown of Bend, Oregon, with Noah. James then began work there as a veterinarian."
James, a fan of Western Fiction, introduced Noah to the genre at a young age. Noah found himself interested in the environment and action of the Old West and was awed by how similar the atmosphere was to the High Desert of Oregon.
Cut. Media consumption as a hobby doesn't need elaboration unless it forms an integral part of the character's personality.
Noah discovered his Gift much later than most, at the age of nine. Other children often teased him as a result, and he began to fear that he didn't have a Gift at all. The first time it manifested, he had attempted to mimic a scene in a film and accidentally shattered a glass door. Noah was scared by the event and decided that he didn't want his Gift.
Cut the sentence starting with "other children". Add "western" before film for context. Cut everything from "Noah was scared" on.
James immediately consulted a professional, who advised that Noah be placed on mild power suppressants to prevent his power from becoming a danger to others. Noah gladly agreed to take his medication. James decided that only the teachers should know about his Gift, as it could seriously hurt someone.
Cut everything starting with "Noah gladly agreed". Put the first sentence in the previous bullet point.
While at home during a school vacation, Noah found his father's acoustic guitar and tried to play it himself. While he was not naturally gifted, his interest in the instrument convinced James to purchase him a guitar and teach him how to play it. For Noah, creating music became a relaxing activity, and he has improved significantly over time and is now a competent musician.
Guitar playing is a skill, so it merits mention. However, shorten this to:

"During one school vacation, Noah took interest in learning to play his father's guitar, so his father purchased one for him and taught him how to play it. Creating music became a relaxing activity for Noah, and he has improved significantly over time and is now a competent musician."
Noah enjoyed walking and exploring the area around him, as it helped him release energy and stay in shape. Eventually, he asked his father to allow him to walk to and from his middle school. He argued that the distance was close enough and that it would be healthy for him. His father hesitantly agreed on the condition that he would no longer be allowed to if he skipped and provided him with a flip phone to call him or emergency services if necessary.
Cut. This is better mentioned in-character.
James noticed that Noah was often lonely and felt that a pet would help him feel happier. As a result, he adopted a Samoyed puppy from a local rescue shelter. Noah was thrilled and doted on the young dog. James allowed Noah to help care for the dog and helped to teach him about animal care. Noah was very interested and always sought to know and do more to help, and gradually became quite knowledgeable about the needs of animals. His dog is still alive to this day, and Noah handles most responsibilities related to it.
Cute, but unnecessary. We don't need to know about a character's pet unless they're an integral part of their life.
In the second-to-last year of middle school, an incident occurred while Noah was walking home from school.
This and the following bullet point are genuinely important, and while they could be shortened, neither are out of line. I'm highlighting them as examples of good uses of lengthy bullet points.
As a result of his fears, Noah was left unable to watch his favorite television shows and movies due to the prevalence of guns in Western Fiction. He also felt fearful of walking around alone. The loss of his hobbies was devastating to him, but he explored new genres to compensate. He became fascinated by Verisimilist works of fiction, as they helped him imagine a world that, to him, was happier. Without his powers, he would have lived a less troubled life, and as a result, the genre appealed greatly to him.
Shorten this to:

"As a result of his fears, Noah was left unable to watch his favorite television shows and movies due to the prevalence of guns in Western Fiction. He explored new genres to compensate, and became fascinated by Verisimilist works, finding a world without powers to be happier, and imagining his life in one to be less troubled."
When Noah returned to school, he often found himself lonelier than he was before. Some students felt afraid of him, while others used his fears to bully him by playing loud noises in his ears or flashing lights in his direction. Noah often feigned illness to avoid attending, and while James knew he was pretending, he often looked the other way. Over time, however, Noah's politeness and kindness won over those around him, and the school faculty helped prevent targeting of him.
Cut, as this doesn't have any lasting, notable consequences.
Noah found himself drawn to romance novels in particular, as they were usually free of violence. He enjoyed the drama and intrigue of the stories, especially those with happy endings that made him feel good. While others sometimes judged him for his taste in literature, he cared little for their opinions and instead focused on the fact that they made him happier when he read them.
Same thing as before. Cut.
As Noah was going into high school, his father decided to purchase a vacant plot of land with money he had saved for many years. He wanted to own a home, but the price of real estate in the area made it cheaper for him to construct one instead. Noah and his father helped work on the house, though the scale of the task required them to seek outside help. Noah became interested in carpentry as a result and, when construction finished on the house, began to create small pieces of furniture in his free time. He enjoyed the feeling of satisfaction that the work brought.
Shorten this to:

"As Noah was going into high school, his father decided to purchase a vacant plot of land with money he had saved. Noah and his father worked to build a house on the land with some outside help. Noah became interested in carpentry as a result of this, and when construction finished on the house, began to create small pieces of furniture in his free time."
While Noah had gained new interests, he often missed those he previously abandoned. Aware of this, his father prepared heavily for his fifteenth birthday and learned video editing to ensure Noah could enjoy his old hobby. Noah received several copies of Western films and television shows that his father had personally edited to remove flashes of light and gunshots, as well as a Stetson hat. Noah was incredibly grateful and spent the next several weeks binge-watching them until he ran out. Noah's father continues to edit films and television shows for him to watch, and they often watch them together.
Nice, but unnecessary in a background. Cut, and mention it in-character.
Noah and his father often go on walks together on weekends. He uses these walks to discuss things that are important to him, both good and bad. As a result of these walks, Noah has slowly become more comfortable with walking alone. He began walking to and from school again in Freshman year, and he often enjoys exploring nature in his free time.
It's nice, but we don't need to know his character arc, just the end result. Since he got over his fear of walking alone, cut.
Socially, Noah has many friends as a result of his politeness and empathy. Most of these friendships result from mutual interests, but others result from simple kindness and chance meetings. However, some students use his sensitivity to hurt him, and he has a low view of those individuals. He was invited to a band by a friend of his, and he currently plays guitar in it. To his friends, Noah is incredibly supportive. He welcomes them to share their problems or feelings with him whenever needed.
A lot of this (except the band bit, which is so minor that it doesn't merit mention in the background, and is better reserved for IC) would be better placed under "Personality". Cut this down to:

"Socially, Noah has many friends as a result of his politeness and empathy. Most of these friendships result from mutual interests, but others result from simple kindness and chance meetings. However, some students use his sensitivity to hurt him, and he has a low view of those individuals."

And then fit the rest into "Personality."

--

Everything else is fine. Post back here when you've got that done and he should be good to go.
