Leaving The Other Half Undone

Phase 4 (37+ Hours)

The seawater swimming pool was built later in the town's life as a seafront amenity for those not engaged in the fishing trade. A large stone construction that captures the seawater as the tide recedes, the pool was initially popular with the locals, although they soon became bored of its cold waters and it rarely saw use except on the hottest days. Eventually the town gave up on maintaining it, and it has become choked with seaweed while thick patches of algae along the stone walkways makes traversing it treacherous if done without care. Despite all of this, the view of the Dragon's Tooth from the end of the pool wall is still one of the most magnificent in town.

Cybil didn't turn to look back at Clay. He chose not to hear his pleas. They were weak, empty. Had Clay forgotten how Cybil had left him bleeding on the floor after he had been shot? Perhaps. Maybe he didn't see that Cybil saw him there. That Cybil had ample time to get first aid supplies from his bag and tend to him on the ground, but chose to run instead. If they saw each other once again, Cybil knew that they'd be mortal enemies.

So why waste time here, then?

Cybil rose to his feet, his legs shaky, unsure whether he was in water or on land. His skin felt raw, tender all over, the wind tickling the whole of it like one giant red wound. Wordlessly, he started to walk away from the pool, though he could feel its yawning presence behind him, open to the sky, ready to receive. He stumbled on into the dusk, the light from the gloaming sky on his shoulders.

Was it a gleam, or was he glowing?

He hobbled off, still soaked, still dripping, and didn't look back. Clay did not deserve to see his smile.
