Mortal Kombat

Private Lobby

The upper deck of the ferry is open to the air, and offerings direct access to the nearby house boat via a particularly precarious metal gangplank that shifts with the rocking waves. The upper deck has markedly less cover than the lower; aside from the stairwells offering the opportunity to duck down, it's all benches and railings.

-to the upper level of the Ferry. Saw the sun. The sky. The benches and the railings and James with decreasing obscurity as she kept running. Kept going for the railing at the end where she’d been last night, gun and backpack in hand.

“Someone’s coming up!” She yelled at James, as his attention snapped away from wherever it’d been. “Get ready!”

((James Highchurch continued from Violet Hill))

James had spent much of the morning alone on the upper deck. The morning had brought a new set of announcements, but some sort of glitch had occurred, resulting in the omission of Keegan’s death and possibly Bacchia’s. None of the Respects had managed to find her, dead or alive, following Keegan’s death.

He felt a bit shitty, leaving Sofia alone with the others, but she’s seemed to get on well enough with the group, right? It wasn’t like with Verity.

Of course, he could not remain alone with his thoughts for long. He’d heard the commotion coming from below, the voices and the gunshots which rung out and drew him stiffly to attention.

Soon enough, Verity ran up the stairs and shouted a warning to him. Someone was coming.

“What the hell did you guys do?” He asked, but the words were only muttered under his breath, a frustration expressed only to himself as he drew a his shiv from his pocket.

If it was Ivan, he’d have been scared, but there’d been too much talking, too much preamble for that, he thought. This was probably another stupid avoidable fight, like with Jasper.

“Do they, like, have some kind of weapon?” Was the question he actually expressed to Verity, keeping to the side of the deck, trying to keep distance from the stairs.

ES10: AKENO KUDO CONTINUED FROM disappointingly a ‘luckier’ fish

Akeno bound up the stairs two at a time after Verity, but wasn’t able to catch up to her before the other girl reached the top. She heard them speak to someone, warn them of her arrival and for a panicked moment Akeno wondered how many there would be waiting for her; it crossed her mind that she might have made a mistake in being lured up here, but it was too late to take it back and as she crested the last step there was only one other person she could see.

She recognised James from the clipper ship. He’d been the one to join the fight late, after throwing Shoshanna into the water; of the three who Jasper fought he was probably the one who contributed the least to his death. Akeno looked around the upper deck of the ferry but the girl, Bacchia, was nowhere to be seen; that didn’t mean she wasn’t here somewhere, but for now it was just the three of them. Verity, James and herself.

Fisk would make four, if he followed her.

Akeno stepped away from the top of the stair to make room for his eventual arrival as she staked out a spot near the centre of the upper deck. There was a lot more room up here, compared to the crowded rows of cars below; more room to move, less places to hide, nowhere to take cover. She let her backpack for from her shoulders and caught it before it fell to the floor, moving it so that she held both straps in one hand. Her eyes moved from Verity to James, to the stairwell and back again, waiting for someone, anyone to move.

For the violence to begin.

Clank.

Clank.

((Fisk Bateman continued from downstairs. ))

"That was rude." Fisk brought the hook cane from his shoulder into his off hand with a clap. Akeno was surrounded now. Granted, he didn't know how well Verity could fight, and he knew all too well how James fought, but they still had numbers. Fisk trusted his own abilities. He saw how Jasper fought, he learned from that.

"Y'know, we gave you a choice. Walk away, nobody gets hurt, and if we met again, we'd make it quick." Didn't want to underestimate her, whilst Fisk was self taught martial arts from watching Wesley Snipes films, Akeno was taught martial arts in a gym, but he knew enough that to make someone angry was to make them more suspect to mistake.

"Wasn't Jasper enough? Now look. You gonna get another friend killed, AND you're going to die slow. Are you a masochist, or just dense?"

He eyed James and Verity. Two on one side. One on the other. Perfect pincer. They could do this.

"Go on then. Fight back. Ending's the same regardless, you've made your choice."

He nodded at them, the sound of the gunshot below gave them the cue to rush.

Fisk clanked forward, and swung the hook low.

While Fisk was busy posturing, Akeno took the opportunity to plan; the downside to loving the sound of your own voice was that it gave people time to think, time to catch their breath and figure out ways to beat you. It was why Akeno always rolled her eyes when the bad guys in the actions movies she watched started giving speeches; villains monologue and then they lose.

There were three opponents, positioned in a loose semi-circle around her which made keeping them all in sight an issue, all armed while she was not; Fisk had Jasper’s hook, Verity had an empty pistol and James seemed to have pulled yet another shiv out of his pocket. It was a worse position than Jasper had been in, since he’d at least had a weapon to fight with and didn’t have to worry about someone shooting him. Objectively she could say that she was a better fighter than Jasper, but there was a limit to what karate could do for her here; martial arts weren’t the superpower that fiction made them out to be. There was no fighting style alive that would let you win against a gun unarmed, or even a knife.

As much as she hated to admit Fisk was right, she might be in trouble here.

The biggest threat was Verity. Or at least, Verity held the biggest threat to Akeno in her hands. The absolute worst thing that Akeno could do would be to let someone reload the gun and turn it against her; once that happened her chances of surviving this would be non-existent. It had to go first.

A gunshot rang out from below deck like a starter’s pistol and Fisk walked towards her while swinging the hook. Akeno stepped back when he began to move and jumped back when the hook came her way, managing to avoid it entirely. She spun away from him, ignoring Fisk entirely as she swung her arm and hurled her backpack in James’ direction before throwing herself into a run towards Verity.

No time to worry about the gunshot or what it meant; she just needed to trust that Lucille would take care of herself and worry about her own problems. Her priority was the gun, either taking it from Verity or just getting rid of it entirely; so long as it couldn’t be used against her it didn’t matter. Akeno came to a stop in front of the taller girl, quickly falling into a rough version of her normal stance as she planted her feet and threw a straight punch at the centre of her chest.

Everything happened so much.

She’d wanted to respond to James. Tell him the exact situation. Two people down below who they’d attempted to kill, neither with weapons. She’d tried to shoot one, and now they’d followed her up here. That was the situation. That was why they were fighting.

She wanted to reload her gun. Get her bag up, pull the extra clips for the glock out, and stuff one in. Whether she wanted that or not, the battle would’ve been over in a second, and the thing that had become a threat to her life would be neutralized. Would’ve been that easy. To do it. And to justify it.

She wanted to put two and two together. She’d seen this girl with Alyssa back at the very beginning of all of this. She’d heard her voice before, somewhere down in the bowels, with Rhonda and Leah and the Shadow People. The other people here had named her Akeno. Those were three facts. She wanted her mind to mush them together. Get the full picture.

And when the other girl threw the punch, she wanted to block. Lift her bag up, take the full force of the punch, leave her opponent in a position where the other two could punish her mistake. It was so simple. Her bag was in front of her already. All she had to do was lift it up. Lock her arms. Stay strong.

But everything happened so much. Everything happened so quick. Nothing happened like Verity would’ve wanted it to. All she could do was lift the bag up to her face before Akeno’s fist slammed into it and pushed Verity backwards, off her feet, onto the ground.

It was Akeno, someone else looking for revenge, someone else they’d managed to provoke into a fight. Sure, James, Fisk, and Verity seemed better armed and had the numbers on Akeno, but the fight with Jasper had been proof of just how badly things could spiral out of control if they weren’t careful, and James didn’t get the impression that Fisk or Verity were being particularly careful.

Weren’t they supposed to be the experts, though? The fans?

Did anyone know what they were doing?

James hadn’t moved after revealing his shiv, only having his thoughts interrupted when Akeno’s bag suddenly connected with his gut, pushing the air out of his lungs and leaving him staggering backwards but somehow managing to avoid falling on his ass.

Verity was Akeno’s primary target, it seemed. Maybe the gun was the cause for that, he wasn’t certain, but it was clear that James and Fisk were secondary for now.

He hesitated for a moment, trying to catch his breath. However, it wasn’t too long before he leapt forward with a somewhat unsteady gait, approaching Akeno from her side. He remembered that girl Shoshanna who’d fallen from the clipper ship during the fight with Jasper. In the moment, James had feared he’d be responsible for her death, but she’d never shown up on any of the announcements.

So, James would do the same to Akeno here, just get her to the edge and knock her off so that everyone could focus on whatever was happening on the lower deck.

He lowered his head and closed his eyes as he quickly closed in.

Well, that was a shame. Would’ve hoped to end it early and hooked Akeno in the Achilles’ tendon so the real fun could begin, but of course it wasn’t that easy. Of course she was going to bumrush forward, almost getting predictable.

Verity wasn’t ready for her, that much was clear, didn’t have time to reload, didn’t have time to defend herself. If she were alone, this would’ve ended badly for her. But, she wasn’t. Fisk was here, and so was James, whom surprisingly enough, finally nutted up a bit.

Fisk smiled.

Don’t worry boy, we’ll make a killer out of you yet. Fisk flipped the hook over, backwards. As much as he wanted to just jam it in a shoulder blade, kidney, or an eyesocket he didn’t want to run the risk of missing and hitting Verity, nor James. A good whack or two would hurt, but wouldn’t be fatally catastrophic.

And with that, he closed the distance, ready to wallop Akeno across the back of the head with a downwards vertical strike.

Fisk swung.

Awareness.

It was a key thing in fights, whatever form they took. At all times you should know the answers to two questions; where is your opponent and what are they doing? Easy enough to do when you were fighting a single person and you were both confined to an 8 meter by 8 meter square of padded mats. It was a lot more important to keep in mind when you were fighting multiple people, because it was all too easy to lose sight of someone in the confusion. Ideally she would keep all three in her vision at the same time, but failing that she needed to remember to keep looking over her shoulder as much as possible.

As soon as Verity hit the floor in front of her, Akeno was looking around; to the side and behind her, the last places she had seen James and Fisk before she tunnelled in on the bigger threat. They were both still there, though they had moved closer since. James was closing in, but he had his eyes closed and was moving blindly. Fisk posed the bigger threat; he was rushing her, hook above his head as he sought to bring it down on her skull. She side stepped, moving away from both and getting out of the way of the swing as she half turned to face Fisk. Her forward leg came up and she fired off a side kick towards his stomach.

Akeno backed away, moving clear of the tangle of bodies this was becoming as she sought space to move. Her eyes took in the scene, flicking from one person to the next and paying particular attention to Verity’s hands.

Fisk stumbled back, and caught his footing before he could stumble over. God, he was going to make Akeno suffer for these games. He took one hand off of his hookspear, rubbed his ribs. That would be another bruise to add to the countless ones he'd currently had. Couldn't help but think of that old strawberries and grass stains song.

I tried to do handstands for you~
I tried to do headstands for you~

He pulled his arms out to his sides, like a showman. Treated this like the game it was. Paced her like a shark, trying to circle her. He hoped James and Verity understood what he was doing. "Come on, Akeno, we really going to keep playing these pointless games? Just give up and die already so your friends stop dying instead." He slapped the cane into his free hand again. He was doing what he did best, play bait. Buy time. Let them walk into the mistakes like they always do.

I'm permanently black and blue~

"Very well."

Permanently blue for you~

"Let's play."

For you~

Fisk smiled.

Instead of the collision he’d hoped for, James found that his body met with nothing but open air, eyes shooting open as he teetered on the edge of tripping over himself when the expected resistance of another body failed to materialize. Luckily he managed to only go down to a knee, rather than actually faceplant.

Both he and Fisk had seemingly failed to deal with Akeno, so now the leader of the Respects was playing at more weird posturing for whatever reason.

This fight was looking dumber by the minute, but it still quite likely that Akeno was here to kill them, or at least some of them. Hoping that Fisk was providing enough of a distraction, James ditched the idea of trying another charge and Akeno and quickly moved towards Verity, trying to help her up.

“Come on…” He whispered urgently, knowing that Verity’s gun was the best option to end this quickly, either through threat or force, if indeed it needed to be ended so directly.

She was already partway there by the time James had reached her — she’d moved her backpack off of her chest and had started unzipping it while her body was sprawled on the floor. His help hadn’t been quite needed, but she was going to take it. Let him bring her body up to sitting level. Let him get between her and Akeno as Verity crawled behind him and took the bag with her.

She could hear Fisk doing the BM. She could see James stay in position as she pulled the new clip out of her bag. Akeno wouldn’t be able to see her hands, but the click as Verity yanked the old clip off of the gun would tell her all she needed to know.

All Verity needed was a moment to put the new chamber in the gun, stand up, and turn around. All Fisk and James needed to do was stay between her and Akeno for the duration of that moment. There wasn’t any time to breathe. Every single second counted.

Akeno watched and waited and by the time she realised what was happening she’d missed her chance to stop it.

Fisk and James had moved in between her and Verity, obscuring the other girl from sight and making it infinity harder for her to get to her; which was a problem, because she still had both her gun and her bag which presumably had more bullets in it and now she had free reign to reload. Allowing that to happen was a blunder on her part, because while she’d been trying to keep an eye on all of the moving pieces of this fight she’d failed to noticed the bigger picture.

Okay, fine. A change of tactics was in order. Timer was running down and she needed to take a risk to avoid a loss.

If she couldn’t run around them then she’d just have to go through them; Akeno had wanted to pick away at them a little more before she went in for a finisher, victory through attrition, but she’d have to just hope they were still feeling the damage Jasper had given them. Her eyes dropped down to Fisk’s ribs for a split second before snapping back up; he’d been touching his side, where she’d kicked him.

She stepped forward, putting all of her weight on her forward leg as she brought her other foot around in an arc. Akeno aimed the round house kick at Fisk’s ribs, hoping to hammer away at an existing hurt and hedging her bets on him dropping rather than being able to take it.

The kick landed home, causing Fisk to stumble to the side, audibly verbalizing his disapproval of Akeno and her cheap tricks.

“MOTHERFFF-“

Okay, fuck you Akeno. No more talking shit time. You wanna keep playing these stupid games, but fuck it! I’m done! No more theatrics, I’m killing you now, and Verity’s not gonna get a chance to shoot you by the time I-

Fisk reeled back with a scream, swinging the hook at Akeno. No more risk on hitting his friends if they’re behind him, he can go all out now. He began to push forward in rage, a series of haphazard blows being swung back to back to back, left right left right left right left.

He brought the hook up above his head and swung downward, screaming unintelligibly.

Fisk stumbled, but he didn’t fall. This was a problem, because it meant that he was still standing in her way and because he was now swinging the hook at her.

Despite appearing to have lost his temper, screaming in anger or pain or any number of other unidentifiable emotions, Fisk had had the clarity of mind or the good fortune to step back before swinging his weapon; where before Akeno was close enough that the sharp point of the hook couldn’t hit her, now it was right on course to pierce her throat if she didn’t avoid it. That wasn’t an option, neither was retreating, so as the hook came her way Akeno ducked under the first swing and stepped into the maelstrom.

The return swing caught her as she was standing, hitting her shoulder as Fisk turned the weapon around faster that she expected. The second she caught on her arms, standing close enough that the hook itself couldn’t touch her but the wooden haft certainly could; she blocked the next swing and the one after that in the same manner, each one bruising flesh and leaving stinging reminders. The last swing Akeno ducked under and when Fisk raised the weapon above his head that gave her the opening she needed.

Akeno stepped past Fisk, slipping out from under his swing and around his left side to stand slightly behind him. From there she raised a foot and kicked at the back of Fisk’s knee, pushing her foot into the joint and forcing it to bend, taking the shorter boy none too gently down to the ground. It wouldn’t take long for him to recover, most likely, but a few seconds was hopefully all she needed for now.

She turned to James.
