There are some things a man just can't run away from.

Open - Day 10

A medium sized duck pond is in the middle of the park. Old row boats are still tied to the edges of the pond. There are stands near the edge of the pond that advertise birdseed, and there is a sign near the water that says swimming is prohibited.

"...tomorrow. Hhm. ...Bunch of good that does."

Joe did try to tell her that apologizing for being off on her aim was stupid. At least she'd tried. At least she hadn't looked at Hansel leaving and not been able to take the shot. At least she hadn't dragged people into confronting him and gotten them killed. If Madeline could be blamed once, he could be blamed a few times over.

He couldn't find the words or energy to verbalize this sentiment, so he just shook his head slightly and said, "No."

Silence. Felt like it went forever. And then an offer, which Joe supposed was... nice of her, but—

"Dying alone... the worst?" Joe snorted, though that brief laugh was followed by a sharp pain and a whine. He curled up tighter, eyes screwed shut while that jolt of pain dissolved into the rest. "Lots of things... lots worse."

Most of the examples that came to mind had already happened on this island. Comparing to the last couple of weeks dying alone sounded almost relaxing in comparison.

The only worse thing he could think of... that hadn't happened... was lying there for several hours, in excruciating pain, with the one remaining goal he had just out of reach.

"Don't want to... waste time."

Maybe he wouldn't have chosen to die yet. But he'd choose it over the same useless death a few hours later.

That was all the control he had.

"D'you mind... uh..." Joe opened and shut his hand. "Gun. I need a... any gun..."

Maddie was taken slightly aback by Joe's sudden outburst of energy.

Perhaps dying alone wasn't the worst, but it was certainly rather terrible, at least to her. She didn't want to die alone, come the time, whenever it was.

Then, Joe asked for a gun. Her mind instantly went to suicide. She didn't know what to think about it. Suicide wasn't the best way out by any means but it was probably better than sitting there bleeding to death slowly. What right did she have to deny a quicker death to him when he didn't have a chance in the first place? She took out the gun-knife and loaded another shot into it.

Then she placed it gently in front of Joe, near his hands. "There you go."

Perhaps Joe was going to do something different from what she thought with it. But, guns were meant for killing, and it was unlikely that he was going to try and kill her, even if the possibility was there. That left only one other options. "Just... before you do anything with that... is there anything left that you wanted to say or do? I can try to help fulfill those wishes, if you want."

"Thanks."

Joe thought about it. He thought about it for a long time, in the eternity it took him to pick up the gun.

He could have asked for her to hunt Hansel down. Hunt Travis down. Finish what he was too useless to do. But what would it do, in the end? Probably get Madeline killed. And even if it didn't... all the people... Marcus, and Aileen and Owen, and all the others whose names just escaped him... they had killed would remain dead. He'd remain dead.

He thought about asking her to apologize for everything he couldn't do, if she ever saw Gabby and Chuck and Marcus and all the others again. He probably wouldn't be seeing them. But 'sorry' was a bullshit word that didn't cover anything.

He wished he'd done something better. Or wished he'd just walked off the cliff that first morning, before the announcements gave him a goal and turned him back. He would have been okay dying then. Not now. Not when he knew there were things to do.

He wished that the plane had broken down before they took off, and that the trip to Disneyland had been canceled. He wished for a lot of things. But wishes didn't make things happen.

"I... no. That's okay. All the wishes... impossible. Gun's enough," he finally said, once the gun was in his hand. It almost fell—his hands were pretty slippery—but he managed to turn it around and shift his arms up so the barrel was pointing at his face.

The sight made him feel cold and bitter. He didn't want to. He wanted to get up. He wanted to do something. Anything that wasn't lying here or pulling the trigger. So he hesitated, even though he knew which of those two choices was best.

He hesitated for a long time. Long enough for the blood loss to become too much. The last lucid thought he had was 'pull the trigger' but he lost consciousness before he could.

He ended up living until the next day. Not that he'd ever know about it.

Maddie sat there, waiting as Joe tried and failed to kill himself.

He passed out, presumably from the blood loss. She didn't know quite what to do about it, she knew he was already done for.

She picked up the gun-knife from off Joe and considered helping him die just slightly faster, but she couldn't bring herself to do it.

Instead, she sat there next to Joe as he slowly died. Even if Joe didn't want her to waste her time, she couldn't bring herself to leave him alone. So, she stayed.

She stayed throughout the rest of the day, despite the dangers of being out in the open, eventually going to sleep nearby him after the sun set.

In the morning, the announcements came on. She didn't listen, they weren't important. Not now. Not this late into the game. All that mattered was that she was truly, utterly alone and it was really a kill or be killed situation.

Not long after, Joe stopped breathing. After he died, she stood up. Two corpses in the same area now. She walked over to what used to be Michael, his stomach blown open by a gunshot. She sat down, in between the two bodies. She didn't know what to do, or to think. She knew this would come. She didn't think it would come so quickly and so viciously. All she could do was apologize.

"I'm... I'm sorry guys. I'm really, really sorry."

With that, she stood up and began packing her things back up. Once they were fully packed, she gave one last look at the gruesome sight. She barely flinched from taking in the horrifying image all at once, she had seen too much already. All she felt was more sadness at the death of two people who didn't deserve to die, especially like this.

She began moving away from the scene, away from the violence. She needed to find a tranquil place to stay for a little while.

She needed it.
