OPEN: Day 1.

Similar in feel to the Inland lake, this lake also features the smell of the salt air, and the sound of waves lapping against the cliffs and beaches can be heard if you just take the time to listen. The most obvious feature of this lake is the small sailboat that apparently has sunk in the center, a lone mast breaking the water line.

[[Shawn Morrison Continued From: I Won't Back Down.]]

Mae, Zach, and Shawn had been by the lake for about half an hour or so, now. They had earned this long needed break, after that long trek they had just taken halfway across the island.

*
*
They'd wandered extensively through the rain forest to see if they could find their missing gold team member.

No Luck.

He was nowhere to be seen. They really hadn't seen anyone at all since the Hot Spot. After about a half hour or so, the group gave up the search. They'd just stick to the original plan and head down the resort beach and the hotel. Sounded easy enough. Problem was, they'd gotten so mixed up in their search, that they didn't know which direction they were supposed to go anymore. Everything looked almost exactly the same in that jungle. Shawn decided to stay in the back and follow the lead of whoever wanted to lead the group out of there, between Zach and Mae.

The group managed to get out of the rain forest, but they ended up in the massive Open Plains, instead of the Resort Beach. They'd traveled a while through those plains, following the dirt path, by some camping spots, and park like areas, with the isolated trees placed here and there.

The jungle may have been humid, but out here, in the direct ray of the sun, turned out to be worse. It wasn't as hot as the hot spot of course, but there was really nowhere to avoid the heat in the plains. No trees blocking off the heat from the mid day sun. Shawn was normally used to this, being the outdoorsy type in Texas. But he wasn't sure how his team mates were doing. If he was uncomfortable, who knew how Zach and Mae were feeling.

Shawn had went through one water bottle by now. He needed to save the rest for later. Right now, any landmark with a body of water was much needed. Shawn probably needed a change out of his heat generating black clothing and blazer, at least for now.

It was a heaven sent, when they finally reached the Coastal Lake!
*
*

The lake was neat. There was a public restroom building nearby, similar to those near beaches. It was your basic tourist resort island destination. Speaking of beaches, one could literally hear the waves and smell the salt air, of the nearby beach below the nearby cliff. There was some picnic tables here and a few trees surrounding the area. Perfect rest stop.

The three wandered around exploring the area on their own for a little while. Zach had gone off to who knows where, for example. Mae seemed content on relaxing.

The restroom was Shawn's first destination of course, after all that water he had drank earlier, he needed to go. He needed to change out of his clothing too. His clothes were just too heavy for this time of day, and the walking around they were bound to do.

Shawn pulled his shirt off and over his head, placing it to the side. He looked into his bag. Dude there's a Snake in - Oh! Huha... He placed Brian the snake to the side as well.

It was a good thing the producers had supplied him with some extra clothing. There was a sleeveless gold shirt in there. It was perfect. A light color, as compared to his heat taking black shirt and has enough breathing space. The only negative is the gold shine would make it easy for people to see him. Hopefully they were good people, like his friends, or team mates or something, rather than psychopaths. He put it to the side for now as he continued looking through his bag.

Shawn took a look at the neon pink board shorts. Yeah, those could be pretty helpful as well. He pulled his camo pants off, and put those neon pink board shorts with the hearts on. That way, he didn't need to forage through his bag later, when he needed them.

He looked at his feather wings, and thought for a moment what it would be like to wear them. He would be like freakin' Cupid man!

He clipped the straps to his shoulders, and checked the wings out. Not bad, Not bad. Pink Shorts.. check, wings check... Now he just needed the toy arrows. Bingo! Mission complete. Shawn took a look into the restroom mirror. Haha, kick-awesome gear. Shawn loved playing dress up.

He felt like a kid again.

A Mechanical sound caught his attention. Shawn turned to spot a camera nearby focused on him.

What a camera? Oh dang, that's right, he was on TV. But Shawn didn't think they'd have camera's in a restroom. Wasn't that like illegal or something, since bathroom time, was like a private moment for everybody?

Well since he had the camera on him, maybe it was time to educate the masses on one of his favorite Musicians. What better than a television show, watched by billions?

Shawn grabbed the Boa Constrictor. It surprisingly didn't smell bad at all. Not dead. He went up close to the camera still in his gear.

"Hey-o America! Eros AKA Shawn Morrison, here. Coming at you LIVE from The Resort: Death Island, probably somewhere in the Caribbean."

"Remember my friend here?" He put the snake's head in front of the camera. "Hi guys!" Shawn mimicked in a child like voice for the snake. He chuckled a bit before continuing.

"His name is: Brian Peter George St. John Le Baptiste De La Salle Eno, The Deceased Boa Constrictor. Brian Eno for short. You can call him Brian. Named after one of the greatest Musicians of all time... If you don't know anything about that... Google him." He winked at the camera, due to the google product placement.

Shawn made the child voice for the snake one more time, making sure to have it's face up close to the camera: "The more you know!"

"Thank you, Brian!' Shawn said before almost kissing the snake on the head. He stopped himself, as there was dried blood and Shawn was a vegetarian. "Naaaahhh..."

He stretched his arm forward and pointed a finger at the camera. "This one's for you Sis! Wish me luck Jan!"
He blew a kiss at the camera, before sitting down and placing his stuff back in his bag.

Then he sat quietly in the corner, still in his costume. Turns out, underneath all that optimistic, calm and cool exterior, Shawn Morrison was like everyone else. He was scared. He missed his family, and he was homesick. He kinda felt like crying...

Just like a little kid.

(( Zachariah Johnston continued from I Won't Back Down ))

They'd tred to find the other member of Gold team. They'd failed. The rational side of his brain knew that that was a good thing, as he was stupid, and useless, and would've just slowed them down, but he felt horrible. He felt like he'd just condemned the kid to be hunted down and murdered in the woods. He felt terrible.

They'd walked for what felt like a few hours, but was probably only one. Parks and campsites had punctuated the steady green rise and fall, but that had only made the trek more creepy. Seeing places built for hundreds deserted, in broad daylight was weird. It was like school during night. Once fammiliar and (sort of) safe passageways seemed alien. Every simple, standard noise became a murderer sneaking up behind you.

Only here, the dangers that once resided in his imagination were very real. Everytime he'd looked over his shoulder during the walk he'd expected to see a shadow dart into the undergrowth, or the glint of a gun barrel pointed at him.

He knew what this was. It was paranoia. He'd seen it so many times, people keep on checking their surroundings, jumping at every noise. He also knew, that the best way to counteract it, was to stay busy. So he had gone off, a little distance away from Shawn and Mae, and lit a small fire. He had remembered a little trick from, of all things, a soap making documentary. Apparently, all you needed to make soap, was a corpse, water and ashes. Of course, making soap was completely pointless, and a waste of time and energy.

What he was doing, was making lye. Lye, or Potassium Hydroxide, was a strong alkali. A drop in the eyes could blind you, and if ingested, could be fatal.

And all he needed to do was filter the water through wood ashes. Simple, and effective.

So, he'd started a small fire. He had heard people say that if you stared long enough into a fire, you could see faces, or the future. All he could see was burning wood. He kept looking over his shoulder every couple of minuites, to make sure Shawn and Mae were still there and that no-one was sneaking up behind him.

He saw Shawn dissapear into the nearby bathroom and he smiled.

"I guess he is human" He muttered to himself.

(Mae St. Clair continued from I Won't Back Down)

Mae was soaking up some sun. This was probably a horrible idea because her pale skin burned easily, but she probably didn't have much time left on this world let alone the island, so maybe a little pink skin wasn't going to kill her. She closed her eyes and tilted her head back to close her eyes, imagining all of the little freckles that were sprouting up across her nose and shoulders, and she didn't care.

With her eyes close, listening to the waves, she could almost feel like she was on vacation.

Then she felt the now familiar ring of metal around her neck, the metal that could easily kill her should she step out of line. She opened her eyes.

Zach was somewhere poking around and she knew that Shawn had gone off to explore. She watched this with a near bemused expression.

We are all just children. The thought made her feel dizzy.

She got to her feet and dusted off her jeans. Picking up her katana she went off to search for Shawn. He was so strong, he would maybe help her stop feeling like she was going to fall off the edge of the world.

It didn't take her long to find him, while the place was full of different things, there weren't many places to go that weren't open. She lightly tapped on the bathroom door.

"Shawn?" She said softly, yet loud enough to hear. "Are you in there?"

There was no answer and it worried her. Could someone have killed him? Had he fiddled with his collar and had it exploded and was his dead in that bathroom? She burst in then, not really caring about how freaky weird it was to do that, but did decorum matter right now? Her mother was probably throwing a fit?

"Shawn? Shawn!"

She found him curled up in the corner. He was alive. His face...She lowered her katana.

"Are you okay?"

The pounding and calling at the door didn't phase him. Shawn was lost in deep thought, not really paying much to any attention on his surroundings. To be honest, Shawn didn't really care all that much. If it was somebody who wanted to kill him, then well, at least this whole thing would be over quicker.

I'll miss the playgrounds and the animals and digging up worms

"Shawn?"

I'll miss the comfort of my mother and the weight of the world

"Are you in there?"

I'll miss my sister, miss my grandma, miss my dad and my home

"Shawn? Shawn!"

Yeah, I'll miss the boredom and the freedom and the time spent alone

The door opened up.

There was really nothing. Nothing they could do... About this, any of that. With the cameras around, there was no boredom, no freedom, and no real time spent alone. Everyone was watching. Every single moment of it.

It was Mae who came into the boys room. Did she like, accidentally walk in the wrong room or something? Shawn looked up.

"Are you okay?" She said to him.

"Yeah." Shawn responded. "Just. Thinking..." He left it as that.

He rubbed his slightly watery eyes with his fingers. He wasn't crying or anything, just kinda bummed out about all this. He hadn't expected anyone to walk in and see him down like that. He hadn't really been like this since his dad died. He just needed some alone time for a bit - well the best he could manage with cameras on him, even in the restrooms.

Shawn stood up and smiled the best he could at her. Wasn't the dramatic sort really. No need to lower everyone else's spirits, right?

"I think you got the wrong bathroom." He joked, changing the subject to a lighter note. "Got your tan on?" He said with a chuckle. Yeah. No need to dwell on the somber stuff, Shawn.

He started stretching a little, loosening the joints in his neck and limbs. Only remembering halfway through that he had been in the middle of getting dressed, bare chested and in a cupid costume.

If Shawn was your typical male teenager, he'd probably be embarrassed by being caught in something like that, by a hot babe, no less. Instead Shawn, grinned and laughed lightly at himself, picking up his things. He walked to the bathroom exit, where she stood, careful to avoid contact with the point of Mae's katana on his bare skin.

"Yeah. Just wanted to check out how it'd look. Huha..." He did the patented hair ruffle thing again, before continuing.

"Like it?" He joked as he looked out the door to the lake.

Might as well hang out here for a little while. Lunch and all. He was hungry. They probably all were.

He watched as Mae followed Shawn into the toilets. He tried not to read anything into that, after all, she had pretty much necked a bottle of water earlier. However, her shouting his name and the creaking and pounding against the walls of the public toilet was hard to ignore.

"shut up. Shut up. Shut Up, Shut Up, SHUT UP!"

He turned his head slowly, to look at the camera near him. It sat there, a hunk of steel, glass and plastic, recording everything. Filing it away. He was very irritated, and his face showed it. His jaw was clenched and his hands were balled into fists. Why did the world have to see him like this? The lowlights of his life broadcast to the world.

He looked at the dying flames, hoping that he'd see some sign of what to do, but he saw nothing but flickers of orange curling around.

He heard another shout, and he had a simple, and rather crude thought.

"I wonder if she'd shout like that for me?"

He sighed and slumped forwards as he realised hed never get to find out.

"Hope he's being gentle" he muttered dejectedly.

He wanted the paranoia from earlier back. It wasn't depressing, it just made him twitchy.

Or, better yet, someone to talk to.

Mae felt silly for being so worried, who could have possibly snuck into the bathroom while her and Zach were milling about? It was nearly impossible, but there was something about Shawn Morrison that made her feel like the world would be a lesser place should he die, and she wanted to help him stay alive as much as possible. She watched him ruffle his hair in the mirror and smile, but she couldn't stop thinking about the look on his face that he had when she had entered. Were his eyes wet? She didn't want to ask him about it, it seemed rude. It seemed...

Well, not like her.

He walked over to her and stood close, she moved the katana out of the way so that she wouldn't accidentally stick him, that would sort of defeat the purpose of her worrying, now wouldn't it?
Like it? He asked her, his eyes went out to the lake. It was beautiful, but she only looked at him. That look on his face...

She reached through her insecurities and feelings of what was right, what should be happening...and touched his cheek lightly with her fingertips. The solid feeling of his skin was reassuring, she smiled. A real genuine smile.

"It's lovely," she told him. "Really lovely."

"It's lovely," she told him. "Really lovely."

Her fingers went to his face. It was the same feeling from the night back then. The party. The same party where they first got acquainted with each other. The same party where they walked and talked with each other. The same party where she nearly drowned, before Shawn dove in and rescued her. That was the last time he felt it. But why now? Here, now of all places?

The power in her hand. To shock you like you won't believe: Electric feel, was what Shawn called it.

He put his hand, to her fingers and held them for a second. Hands embracing as he lowered them. The voltage increased.

She was smiling at him. Was that real? He wasn't sure what was real with Mae, really. That event at the party was weird. It was like they had a connection at first, but after the kiss they had together in front of all their classmates after the rescue, it just didn't feel real.

Was this smile truly, real? Mae was usually kind of distant and a little icy. She'd never really smiled all that much. In fact in almost all of the pictures the other students had taken of them together, for stuff like the year book... Mae usually put on a small closed mouth, half-hearted one.

Not that Shawn could blame her. It was sort of awkward for them after that night. Everyone at school really thought they were dating. When it really wasn't truly the case. They merely acted the part of a young couple, uncomfortable as it was. There was some unknown circumstances going on with the both of them, that no one could really see. Shawn knew his side, but he had no idea what was going on with Mae.

Shawn put his own fingertips to her cheek. The voltage was stronger than ever. Her smile, with the way her cheek muscles lifted, it was definitely a genuine one. Shawn's gaze lingered on Mae's face for a few seconds.

Maybe it was real after all? He'd go and check.

"Really lovely." That was what they were to everybody at school, anyway right? A lovely young couple of kids?
Shawn repeated back, Mae's own words, as he started lowering his face to hers...

A mechanical buzzing noise interrupted the moment. Camera. Again.
Focused on the young couple, and ready to catch the whole moment, on film, for everyone watching at home to see.

They both turned their faces to the camera at the same time. Shawn's eyebrows up and eyes wide. Followed by a timid expression.

He had been nervous enough having so much attention on him for this sort of thing at the party, after saving Mae from drowning and pretty much making out with her afterward. Of course he'd be super timid about this sort of thing, when it involved everyone and their mother, watching Shawn's relationship broadcasted on National TV.

Shawn backed off, from Mae. Adjusting his golden bandanna.

"Umm... You hungry Mae? I think me, you and Zach, should eat some lunch." He eyed the picnic tables near the shores of the lake.

Shawn un-clipped the cupid wings, folding and placing them back in the bag along with the heart bow and arrows.

He kept the neon pink board shorts on, and put the sleeveless gold shirt over his left shoulder. He could always put it on later. The sun was bright hot now. He could just pretend they were having a picnic at the beach. The beach was close enough by anyway. Maybe he'd wash up first.

He flashed the camera a 'heart symbol sign' with his two hands, before walking out of the restroom.

(( Apologies for the short post! ))

He turned around again, his wish for silence answered at last. He saw Shawn leave the restroom, in diffrent clothes. His eyes flashed with hopelessness and rage for a brief second before he composed himself. He was being selfish again. He needed to stop being selfish.

He kicked out the fire and collected as much of the ash as he could in the empty bottle he had. He would make it on the road. He smiled a little fake smile as he walked up to them, the heavy bag on his back, and the wrench still grasped in his left hand.

As he got closer he realised that Shawn was looking at him, and he broke eye contact, looking down and to the left. He couldn't stop thinking of what he'd overheard. His hand tightened on the wrench noticeably for a second.

He wanted to say something, to break this awkward silence of his own creation, but he couldnt think of anything that didnt sound assholish, or brought it back to Mae. So he stood there, silently, waiting for something to happen.

Mae stood in the bathroom for a little while after him, staring at the camera. Had she really forgotten it was there? She was so accustomed to being watched, so accustomed to modifying her behavior accordingly that she couldn't believe that she, in a situation where millions of people were watching had completely forgotten herself.

She walked to the mirror.

A face looked back. She knew it was hers. Brown eyes and messy black hair, very pale skin, long neck, lips that now were pink with absentmindedly nervous biting. God, her hair, what was going on with that? She hated not having make up while on national television. She could hear her mother's voice telling her to stand up straight. Shoulders back.

She arranged her feet into third position, one foot slightly overlapping the other. It was awkward to just stand this way but she took comfort in arranging herself into a position that she understood. The heat was making her hair curl, much to her displeasure and she took the bandanna scrunchie out, wrapping it around her wrist once more. Her hair hung in limp waves, and she tried to arrange it into something that might have been attractive.

Mae thought of Shawn, bringing his face close to hers. It scared her.

She was not going to let herself cry.

She broke position and walked to retrieve her katana. It was time for lunch.

Another glance in the mirror.

Perfect. As much as she could be.

As always.

Mae walked out of the restroom to join her two companions.

It seemed Shawn felt as awkward as he did, and went to wash off in the lake. He sighed as he realised exactly what he'd be washing off, but, as he had been doing with so many things, decided not to dwell on it.

His stomach gurgled slightly, reminding him that he hadnt eaten since he'd arrived. He spied one of the picnic benches and dropped his bag on the seat, pulling out the saw, which he had rather stupidly put at the top, and pulled out a crused loaf of bread. He chuckled and opened it, taking out a piece.

Something was wrong. He felt like he was missing something, that, yet again, he was doing something wrong. He put the piece of bread down, and walked up to the public toilet. God, he was nervous, why was he nervous?

He knocked quietly on the door.

"Uh, hey, you alright in there? I'm eating" He paused for a second, kicking himself for not thinking through what he was going to say. Mae had this effect of making him forget what he was thinking about.

"I- I'd like it if you'd join me"

Oh god. Had he seriously just said that? Really? God he was so damn pathetic. Why did he always manage to make himself sound like an ass whilst she was around? Why couldnt he be all smooth and cool?

He gulped slightly, as he awaited her response.

Please dont mind, please dont mind, please dont mind. He begged mentally.

Mae's face softened as she saw Zach in the doorway. For some reason looking at him calmed her jumbled inner thoughts. She sort of felt like she was some sort of feelings hurricane, but with less horrible imagery. He stood in the doorway and she liked him there, she knew what to expect from Zach. She liked that.

He asked if she was alright and she just nodded. Then he asked her to join him for lunch.

Were this the cafeteria back in Silver Dragon, Mae would have grabbed her lunch tray and headed off to the gaggle of brainless girls that she usually had for company. They would all gab about boys and who liked who and who had a falling out with whom and what were they going to wear to the dance? Prom? A thing of the past. That was a shame, she probably would have brought Shawn.

Funny, she was thinking about wearing gold to her prom.

However, this was different now, she was basically on Murder Island, she could hypothetically do whatever she wanted. But why did that still feel so hard? She cleared her throat and nodded at him again.

"Yes," she said. "I would absolutely love to have lunch with you."

She followed him out of the restroom, enjoying the sun once more as it beat down upon her. The katana was sheathed safely back into its saya, and she felt strange...how comfortable it was to carry the thing around. This wasn't just some prop, it was a sword, an incredibly sharp sword that could be driven through people. It was strange.

Mae headed over to the picnic table and slid onto the bench. "So what's on the menu for today?" She asked him, allowing her eyes to radiate warmth.

Mae, thank god, didnt mind his lapse into stupidity.

Better than that, she seemed to be in a good mood. He was a little worried when she just nodded when he asked her if she was ok, but he brushed it aside. She had this weird effect of making his fake smiles turn real, and making all of his worries just fall away. He loved that.

His heartbeat spiked as she spoke, he heard her use the word "love", but he ignored it. He knew that she loved Shawn, and she was happy with that. He should be happy with that to. He had to be. For her.

They walked slowly towards the bench. He thought about holding her hand, and brushed her hand and fingertips lightly with his. He thought better of it after a few seconds though, and moved his hand away, a red tinge on his cheeks.

He sat down opposite from her, pulling out a bottle of water and a cliff bar.

"So what's on the menu for today?"

"Well, we've got some product placement" He pointed to the bread, his tone light and playful "Product placement" he pointed to the bar, "And, oh hey some Product placement!" He said, finishing up with the water.

He looked deep into her eyes, admiring the beauty and emotion inside, and sighed whistfully.

Mae chuckled a little, resting her head on her hands. She looked at the bounty spread out before her and then up at Zach.

"Sounds delicious!" She said. "Gourmet even." She looked up at him with a sly smile.

It all seemed so peaceful, so comfortable., sitting at a picnic table with the sun shining while listening to the sound of the waves. It was like some camping trip or a vacation with friends. It wasn't though, not really. Her smile faltered as the implications of everything started to creep up on her again.

"Does it always start like this, Zach?" She asked. "Does it always start so quiet and calm? I don't remember much from this show besides the killing."

And the sex, but she didn't want to think about that at the moment.

"Sounds delicious! Gourmet even." She said, with a sly grin that was adorable. He was worried for a second there that she hadnt got the little joke he'd cracked.

He ate a small portion of his food, trying to eat as little as possible, rationing it as much as he could. A little part of him laughed at this, reminding him that the likelihood of him surving for long enough for food supplies to fail were slim. He decided that he'd rather be safe than sorry, and if he could do anything about it, he'd survive.

He remembered the rules of the game, the thought that, to survive, he would have to kill Mae. That gnawed at the edges of his mind, a little niggle in his otherwise perfect plan. He chose to ignore it. Put it off until he had to, because, in the end, he didnt think he could do it.

He looked up, and saw her smile faltering. She was obviously thinking of something bad. He wanted to break her out of that, but equally didnt want to be rude. He was glad when she snapped out of it.

"Does it always start like this, Zach? Does it always start so quiet and calm? I don't remember much from this show besides the killing."

"Well, were sort of lucky. Normally people are going back to the basics; Sex and violence. I'd say thats because we come from a civillised background, but who am I kidding? I just hope it stays quiet for a bit."

Mae nodded as she shredded a piece of bread between her fingers. It was easy to pretend that nothing was happening, but how would she feel when the deaths started happening? This was utterly ridiculous of course, she had heard the gunshots herself, far away and echo-ey but still there. Of course the killing would start, how could it not? It probably already did.

She didn't know what she would do when it came to her.

She knew that Zach was a huge fan of the show and couldn't blame him, her love for dance was such an old fashioned taste compared to most.

Mae, being a fan of the ballet, had always dreamed of being the swan queen, or some sort of dancing princess. She watched incredibly old clips of different ballets on youtube and dreamed. Did fan of SOTF do the same? It seemed odd to her, but then again, dressing up in frilly costumes and prancing around to music must seem strange too.

"Zach, had you ever wanted to be on this show?" Mae asked. "I mean, because you're such a big fan?" [/b]
