Raymond LaSalle

Post by carduinal-cyn »

Name: Raymond LaSalle
Gender: Male
Age: 17
Grade: Junior
Hobbies and Interests: Painting, rock collecting, ballroom dancing, horror fiction

Gift: Blob Form
Power Details: Raymond can transform parts of his body into a pliable, viscous, semi-solid substance the same color as his skin, making his flesh appear rubbery and melted. In this state, his body becomes supernaturally flexible, and he will gradually absorb and digest any organic material that comes into contact with him. If his blob form is unable to completely digest something, he is able to cough up the remnants from his throat, provided the object is able to fit. His internal physiology is similar to those of earthworms and muscular hydrostats; his respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems are merely rudimentary, and he can exchange gases through the pores of his skin when his Gift is active. Because he lacks a more conventional skeletal system, he recovers slightly faster from physical injuries.
Limitations and Drawbacks: Raymond's gift is tied directly to his physical and emotional well-being, meaning that he will rapidly lose control of his physical form if he overexerts himself or experiences strong emotions. If he cannot recover himself, he risks melting into an amorphous, immobile mound of flesh, a process which requires about three minutes to reverse. Due to Raymond's quasi-hydrostatic physiology, his internal organs have far less protection from outside damage than a normal human's. He also needs to consume far more fluids than a normal human to prevent himself from losing mobility regardless of whether or not he is in human shape, as while he heals more quickly, he is more likely to lose blood and other fluids in the process. Lastly, his blob form's absorptive abilities often cause him to inadvertently absorb his own clothing.

Appearance: Raymond stands at 5'7.5" and 220 pounds, most of it fat but with slight traces of muscle. He is of French and Italian descent, with curly, dirty blond hair in a messy mullet cut, a Roman nose, thin lips, and light brown eyes. Due to his Gift, his skin is extremely pale and clammy. When he sweats, it slowly melts like candle wax; when he becomes angry, it forms small bubbles of air. Raymond dresses semi-formally for a high school student, favouring polo shirts, button-down shirts, khakis, jeans, and dressy shoes.

On the day of the abduction, Raymond was wearing a light grey wool coat, a dark blue button-down shirt, dark grey dress pants, and a pair of black slip-on loafers.

Background:
  • Raymond was born September 14, 2004 in Portland, Oregon. He is the only child of James and Nancy LaSalle. Nancy worked as an assistant curator for Portland's Museum of Contemporary Craft until its closing in 2016, while James continues to work in hotel management.
  • When Raymond was two years old, he got into a physical altercation with another toddler, William Ferguson, at his daycare. This fight caused his Gift to manifest for the first time, as the daycare workers soon learned when his fist melted into Ferguson's cheek. Although both boys were rushed to the hospital, they were largely unharmed aside from a small scar left behind on Ferguson's face. Following this incident, the two of them became unlikely friends.
  • Raymond inherited his love of art from his mother, and he has been drawing ever since he was three years old. He often went to summer art camps when he was in elementary school. There, he developed a passion for painting and a distaste for ceramics, which reminded him far too much of his Gift for his liking. Nancy encourages her son in his artistic endeavours: for his tenth birthday, she bought him a drawing tablet, starting a foray into digital art as well. He currently takes commissions for digital drawings and paintings, and he has a bad habit of doodling during classes that don't interest him.
  • Throughout Raymond's childhood, James dedicated weekends to showing his son the city of Portland. Raymond took a special liking to the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry, particularly its earth science wing. He has a collection of rocks and minerals in his room as both a hobby and a reference for his art.
  • Raymond started reading from the age of four. As a budding artist, he was especially drawn towards books with elaborate, award-winning illustrations. When he picked up Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark at the age of seven, he fell in love with the terrifying artwork that accompanied the book's various myths and legends. From there, he graduated to watching horror movies with his parents. His favorites tend towards the surreal, such as Eraserhead.
  • Because Raymond loses control of his Gift whenever he overexerts himself, he rejects every opportunity to participate in sports, fearing that the exercise will render him immobile. This fear stems from his elementary school's Field Day, during which he collapsed under the strain of his Gift in the middle of a relay race.
  • In an effort to ensure Raymond's worries about physical activity would not result in a self-fulfilling prophecy, Nancy enrolled him in dance lessons when he was nine years old. Although he is still very overweight, these lessons have not wholly been in vain: for instance, they have helped his auditions for musicals during his career at Duniway High School.
  • When the Museum of Contemporary Craft closed in 2016, the LaSalle family moved from Portland to Bend in search of a fresh start. Raymond bitterly resented the move; his anger alienated him from William Ferguson, and at his new middle school he began lashing out at classmates with his Gift for petty reasons. In response, Nancy kept a much closer eye on Raymond at home and encouraged him to make new friends as he entered middle school. Due to his temper, he was fairly unpopular during middle school and generally "laid low" during seventh and eighth grade without really speaking to anyone.
  • In middle school, Raymond's unpopularity gave him the opportunity to use the time he would have spent socializing to study. As a result, he achieved high marks in his classes, and even in high school his grades are still mostly As. Raymond considered himself comfortable enough academically to try socializing again following his middle school graduation. To that end, he joined Duniway High School's art club and Science Olympiad, and he auditions for plays whenever he gets the chance.
Personality: Raymond puts up a facade of confidence around others. While outwardly friendly, he is nonetheless prone to inappropriately timed wisecracks and sarcastic humor, so he can come across as mean-spirited without meaning to. He is rather high-strung and has high standards, demanding academic and artistic excellence from himself at all times. As a result, he is very defensive about his abilities, and tends to take criticism poorly. He hides a short temper, and he is known to hold grudges.

Heya carduinal-cyn! I've got Raymond, and there are a few things that I'd like addressed before he can be approved:
carduinal-cyn wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 5:03 amGift: Blob Form
Power Details: Raymond can transform parts of his body into a pliable, viscous, semi-solid substance the same color as his skin, making his flesh appear rubbery and melted. In this state, his body becomes supernaturally flexible, and he will gradually absorb anything that comes into contact with him.
Additionally, a person could reach inside of Raymond's gelatinous body and seriously injure him, though they run the risk of being absorbed.
So I have a fair amount of questions about the mechanic of Raymond's Gift.

1. You say that Raymond gradually absorbs "anything" that comes into contact with him while he's in his blob form. "Anything" is a VERY broad category, as you might imagine, and creates a lot of problems, including:
  • Raymond would presumably slowly melt his way through the floor whenever he changed his form, absorbing whatever that floor happens to be made of.
  • Raymond would absorb metals, presumably incorporating them into his body, and likely killing him from the toxicity. For instance, the extremely common Iron is toxic at about 20 mg/kg of body weight, which would mean that all Raymond would have to do is absorb about 2 grams of iron (for reference, a typical stainless steel teaspoon is about 25 grams, 98% of which is iron) to start being poisoned. Iron is one of the safer metals to have in your body, too, so it only gets worse from there.
  • Raymond would eat through and absorb whatever he happens to be wearing at the time of his transformation (potentially including metal buttons and accessories that, again, would poison him).
Speaking of:

2. What exactly happens to his clothes and other things he's wearing when he transforms? Do they just get sucked inside of him as a blob? What happens when he transforms back? Do they stay stuck inside of him, or does he have enough control to reform himself in the vague shape that he was in? Given that one of his disadvantages is that he lacks control, I can't imagine that he has that degree of finesse with his power, which means that his clothes would presumably get stuck inside of him and absorbed (which would, again, cause problems if his clothes had any metal in or on them).

3. How exactly does Raymond's physiology work? How does he sustain damage when he is harmed? Does he "bleed", and if so, can he die of blood/fluid loss? What happens to all of his organs when he melts? Does he even have organs like a normal person, or does his physiology work entirely differently (much like the currently approved Yvette)? This point is particularly important because you have to remember that more than likely, Raymond is going to die, and therefore he can't just be an unkillable all-devouring blob monster.

To address these points, there are a few things I can suggest:

1. Raymond being able to absorb "anything" has gotta go. If you want my recommendation, to keep with the blob monster aesthetic, you can change it to "organic materials" aka anything containing carbon atoms (like, you know, organic compounds), and leave out anything inorganic (like, you know, metals, or at least metals that aren't bound in something like hemoglobin).

2. Regarding his clothes -- perhaps the fact that they get stuck inside of him is just part of the drawbacks, and maybe he can "cough up" (or vomit up) whatever bits he can't absorb once he changes back, provided they can fit through his throat.

3. Finally, this last point I leave entirely up to you, but some explanation is going to be required. Chew on the questions I asked and get back to me on it. Also, remember that positive or neutral aspects of the power should go into power details and any negative aspects of the power should go into limitations/drawbacks.

Onto the rest:
Appearance: Raymond stands at 5'7.5" and 220 pounds, most of it fat but with slight traces of muscle. He is of French and Italian descent, with curly, dirty blond hair in a messy mullet cut, a Roman nose, thin lips, and grey eyes. Due to his Gift, his skin is extremely pale and clammy. On the day of the abduction, Raymond was wearing a light grey wool coat, a dark blue button-down shirt, dark grey dress pants, and a pair of black slip-on loafers.
Minor; you forgot a line break between these two paragraphs. The only other thing I spotted is that his eyes are grey, which is an unusual color -- is that because of his Gift?
He often went to summer art camps as an elementary-schooler.
I don't believe a dash goes here, but a better way of putting it would be "art camps when he was in elementary school".
[*]He now takes Gift-suppressing medication before any gym class requiring high levels of exertion, such as the day of the Presidential Youth Fitness Program.
Given that Raymond's Gift affects how his body functions at a fundamental level, medication wouldn't exactly do anything for him. Cut this.
When the Museum of Contemporary Craft closed in 2016, the LaSalle family moved from Portland to Bend in search of a fresh start. Raymond bitterly resented the move; his anger alienated him from William Ferguson, and at his new elementary school he began lashing out at classmates with his Gift for petty reasons. In response, Nancy kept a much closer eye on Raymond at home and encouraged him to make new friends as he entered middle school. Due to his temper in elementary school, he was fairly unpopular during middle school and generally "laid low" from sixth to eighth grade without really speaking to anyone.
Raymond would have been about 12 in 2016. This would mean he'd already be in middle school, not elementary, and would be going into high school soon after.
Other Skills: None applicable.
Very minor, but you could shorten this to just "N/A".

Raymond LaSalle (ver. 2) Patch Notes
Old edits will be in blue, new edits will be in yellow.

Attempted to clarify Raymond's power set. I am not sure whether this counts as "adding abilities" or not, but these clarifications put him a bit closer to "worm-man" than "blob-man".

Power Details: Raymond can transform parts of his body into a pliable, viscous, semi-solid substance the same color as his skin, making his flesh appear rubbery and melted. In this state, his body becomes supernaturally flexible, and he will gradually absorb anything that comes into contact with him.

If he cannot recover himself, he risks melting into an amorphous, immobile mound of flesh, a process which requires about three minutes to reverse. Fixed the clunky art camp line.

He often went to summer art camps as an elementary-schooler.

He often went to summer art camps when he was in elementary school.

Omitted the line about Gift-suppressing medication. Given the radical physiological changes involved with the rewrite, this would be even less possible than before.

Because Raymond loses control of his Gift whenever he overexerts himself, he rejects every opportunity to participate in sports, fearing that the exercise will render him immobile. This fear stems from his elementary school's Field Day, during which he collapsed under the strain of his Gift in the middle of a relay race. Fixed the timeframe. He is now a middle school student at the time of his move.

Picked the nit at the end.

Raymond's looking way better! Just one more thing:
carduinal-cyn wrote: Thu Nov 18, 2021 5:03 am in lieu of a respiratory system, he exchanges gases through his skin
The lungs have a surface area for gas exchange of 50 to 75 m2 while the skin has an average surface area of about 2 m2. Gas exchange via your skin works well for very small creatures like earthworms, but has trouble scaling up due to the square cube law. While I'm willing to believe that Raymond needs less oxygen as a result of his Gift, I doubt he'd need only 4% of the oxygen that everyone else needs.

My suggestion: he has a rudimentary respiratory system (so he needs to breathe just like everyone else) like his other systems, and can instead respire through his pores (delivering oxygen to his "lungs") when he's all melted. This would have the added benefit of his blob form expanding and contracting with his breaths, which is delightfully horrifying imagery!

Once you've got that done he should be good to go!
