It’s Raining Men

Hallelujah

The jetties are wooden walkways, kept afloat by buoys, the boats they're lashed to, and their relative lack of density. The central jetties surround the cruise ship and are wider, denser, and better maintained; while it's very possible to fall or be thrown off, almost every piece of walkway here has safety railings, some even reinforced with metal. Life preservers are placed at intervals throughout, and access to many ships is available through ladders and walkways. While it might seem that cover would be sparse, the twists and turns and hiding places between ships actually offer many opportunities to get lost or hide here.

It’s Raining Men

There was an extra jingling in his bag as the earring jumped this way and that.

A black skull earring now hung from a new ear.

Was robbing the dead supposed to be that easy? While, yes, the actual act itself was easy as doing the actual task, RJ felt like there should’ve been more too it than that. Feelings of guilt and disgust and similar things over stealing from someone so recently deceased. He should have been in some form of emotional Hell, or something similar to it.

But instead he felt glad.

He hadn’t spent much time with Bacchia, probably less than a full twenty-four hours, and yet having someone that listened to him, cared about him, and actually worked with him-he couldn’t help but feel grateful for the feeling. Grateful for the time, even if it got cut short.

And no, he wasn’t thinking about Ivan, because until he found the fuck and shot him, there was nothing to think about.

But that was why he took the earring. He wanted to remember that nice time. That good person. When, even on this hellish tv show, people could show a little humanity.

It irked him that he didn’t feel bad about taking it, though. Maybe taking supplies from the dead was understandable, but personal items should’ve crossed a line. Everything else was survival, but this was just a crime not expressly endorsed by SOTF, as far as he knew. He should’ve felt some sort of negative emotion for it, and yet he didn’t.

RJ stopped in his walking for a moment as the announcements began to play. He was close to the cruise ship-on the south side of it he believed. He grabbed the water bottle from his sweatshirt pocket and took a drink as he thought about the complexity and paradoxical nature of emotions, but kept his ear open for the dead and who killed.

Then a body fell from the sky, not fifteen feet away from him.

The cameras got a good shot of the boy doing a spit-take that would’ve made any comedian proud as he stared at the spot another teenager had just landed. Where someone had, very clearly, just died.

And it was as Ritzy was listing off the one death he’d figured out since the last announcement-Rest In Peace Larry-that RJ looked up to the sky, glaring as his hands screwed the now half-empty water bottle closed shut.

“Well fuck you too, God.”

And he walked on before another corpse could get the chance to land on top of him.
