Junkyard Nights

Phase 2 (13-24 Hours)

The salvage yard is located in the industrial park next to the boat shed and is filled with the detritus of maritime life. While a handful of small ruined rowboats are kept here, it is also home to partially-submerged shipping containers, old refrigerators and bed frames, and even a number of totaled cars and trucks, forming a treacherous mountain of junk. Kept around partially for lack of a better place to dispose of such objects and partially as an opportunity to scavenge materials for slapdash repairs, the salvage yard is more accessible than its phenomenally dangerous architecture might lead one to expect. Thanks in part to its varied topography and in part its distance from the rest of town, the salvage yard was a popular spot for children and teens alike. The children using it to play games such as hide and seek while the teens used it as a party spot. This has led to some accidents over the years and at least one death when a drunk teen fell into the ocean, but the only result of this incident was the addition of a chain link fence; the gate to this was quickly sabotaged and has remained unlocked since.

(Kassandra Vaitaki continued from Twisted Steel in a Twisted World)

The announcements came, and they were even worse than Kassandra had expected.  She new that people would crack, but she hadn’t expected so many people to go off the deep end so early.  Classmates were murdering classmates.  Other classmates were taking themselves out so that they wouldn’t suffer even worse fates.  All of that in just 12 hours.  She wanted to puke.

As expected, Marion’s name was up there for killing Scott at the gazebo.  She was officially a marked woman.  Kass was lucky enough that her name wasn’t on he announcements as well.  Apparently fatass managed to pick himself back up after they left.  Another name that thankfully wasn’t on the announcements was Mina, so whatever had happened to her, she was still kicking.  Rodney was alive too, which she imagined gave Bishop some comfort.

She cold put names to the pool murder now as well, Lisa Brighton and Scott Whitman.  It wasn’t comforting knowledge, but at least she knew who she needed to be wary of.  It was a pretty creepy coincidence that the pool murderer and the guy who attacked Marion had the same name.  That was just fucked up in a weird kind of way.

It wasn’t too late in the evening just yet, but the group agreed to an early curfew for the night.  They were in a pretty out-of-the-way location, and they would be needing their strength for the days to come.  Plus, if they got some rest early, then they would be able to be out and about while everyone else was sleeping.  At least that was the intention behind the plan, anyway.  Even so, it didn’t seem like a good idea for all of them to be asleep at once with no protection, so someone needed to be a lookout.

Kassandra volunteered for the first shift.  She felt that Bishop and Marion needed the rest more than she did considering everything that the two of them had gone through so far.  Plus, she was pretty sure that she was the toughest of the trio, so she thought that she would be able to repel any assholes who might come after them.  She brought her trusty pipe to the door of the van with her.  She considered asking Bishop for his shotgun, but she was more used to the pipe at this point.  It had already seen her through some tough times, so she figured it could keep on helping.  Standing in the doorway, she turned around to look at her allies before dropping onto the ground outside.

“Get some sleep, all right?  I’ll let you know if we need to move.”

Marion's name was on the announcements, just as she expected. She just hoped any new potential allies didn't think she was a player just because she got one lousy kill. So long as she avoided killing anyone else, she figured that as more announcements are made she'll get less likely to be assumed to be one since her name wouldn't be on them.

What Marion found more noteworthy though, wasn't who was on the announcements, but who wasn't. Brittany wasn't on there, which meant she hadn't killed anyone yet thankfully. Marion assumed she still had a crappy weapon, and hoped it would stay that way. It'd make it easier to deal with her when they found her. Mina's name also wasn't on there, which meant she was still alive out there somewhere, thankfully. Rodney's was also missing, which was good because he was a potential ally. Kassandra also wasn't on there, which meant that fat dude had lived.

Marion was rather disappointed Kass had decided to volunteer for first guard duty, as she'd been hoping to sleep on her shoulder. Marion wasn't gonna complain about it though, she was too tired.

"All right, night then," Marion said, before she turned over on her side and closed her eyes, ready to sleep.

(Bishop Smith continued from Twisted Steel in a Twisted World)

James had killed. That wasn't something Bishop had expected. From the sounds of things it was self defense, but that didn't matter. By all means, the fact that James had a kill and then died to Bridie absolves her of all guilt anyone could put on her. What's more, this also meant that Bishop left her with far more supplies than he had expected. A little bit of food, yeah, whatever. But Paxton's death might have given James a half way decent weapon. One Bishop might have just handed off to Bridie. The only comfort Bishop had was the fact that he didn't see a weapon in James' bag when he dug through it. Then again though, he didn't see a second med kit in there either. So really he had no reason not to assume that Bridie didn't have the tool for murder.

Suddenly he began regretting not ending her when he had the chance. His only hope was that she somehow didn't kill again.

Besides that, the sheer amount of killers out there also worried Bishop. He knew there would be a lot of deaths in the first 12 hours. That wasn't a shock. However, this was still way more than he thought would be playing. If anything it was a shock that Rodney had, thankfully, survived the encounter on the road. Nellie was dead at least, something Bishop wished he wasn't thankful for, but there were still a good number of killers out there already. A few stuck out in particular. Charlie Cade killing early on didn't shock him, he knew she was going to play. Really it was pretty obvious, but the fact that she still decided to do it was a bit disappointing. Marion was also on the announcement, though to nobody's surprise. Wasn't that shocking that she killed the man, given what the girls told him, but this did mean they would have to be a little more careful around people. Danielle Baumgartner, though, was a shock. Especially given who she killed. Bishop knew her and Jacqueline were friends, though he didn't know either of them that well personally. In fact aside from their names he hardly knew them outside of the fact that they were friendly. But still, the fact that she did that to somebody she appeared to be close to... It was a little shocking. What happened between the two of them anyway? Was she actually playing? Those were questions Bishop didn't know that he'd the answers to, or if he even wanted to, but regardless it was something he was morbidly curious about.

Kass, who was thankfully not on the announcements, asked if she could take the first shift. Bishop didn't quite know if he could sleep tonight, but if she wanted to do so he felt no need to stop her.

"S-sure." He replied. "I-I can take the next shift though, if you want."

((Charlie continued from Rat in a Cage))

There were more people here than Charlie had thought. Almost half of the field hadn't just been wiped out in the first twelve hours. That didn't happen. They had a large field, which meant that the numbers needed adjusting.

Now, if only Charlie could bring herself to think about numbers instead of having the way the announcer spoke about Dyne's death swirl around and around in her head. It was both far too much and not nearly enough. A couple of sentences—did that truly suffice for an epitaph? Was that all the attention the death of a patriot was worth?

Too much attention. Thinking about it made Charlie sick as it replayed the events of the morning back in her head over and over.

The area filled with scrap and junk wasn't difficult to miss, and Charlie gladly occupied herself with the strategic consideration of whether it was worth heading there. Cover would be better, but there would surely be blind corners and ambush positions everywhere. If she didn't pay attention it would easy to get turned around, too; not the best scenario if she found herself needing to make a hasty exit. On the other hand, firearms would be harder to bring to bear in close quarters, and there would be less time to line up shots in close confines. Further, she was well equipped for--

Charlie put her hand on the knife for a moment, closed her eyes, swallowed, and then reopened them.

She could check it out for now.

Charlie found her way through the gate of the fence and started to move through the debris. Soon enough the destroyed vehicles and piles of junks started to close around claustrophobically.

Charlie drew the knife. She clenched her jaw, clenched her fist. She told herself that the tremor in her hand was from tension.

She turned around the next corner—formed by what might have been a truck in a past life—and saw, far too close, a figure standing by some kind of van.

Charlie didn't get a very good look before jerking back behind the truck. The hilt of the knife impacted rusted metal with a heavy thunk.

While her friends were asleep, Kassandra had taken to walking a perimeter around their campsite.  She circled not only the van, but the nearby area of the vehicle graveyard as well.  After all, if she didn't just stick to their own vehicle, then it would be harder for a random onlooker to pinpoint their location.  She made sure to never stray away too far away, though.  She didn't want to seem conspicuous, but at the same time, she couldn't let the others go unprotected.  They had trusted her to watch over them during the early phase of the night, and she wasn't going to abdicate that responsibility.

The thing that struck her the most was the loneliness of the job.  She hadn't been alone in the Program for any real period of time since the last time she came to the salvage yard, and now she wasn't used to it  But with both Bishop and Marion off in dreamland, that left her by herself for the next couple of hours.  She was a little tempted to creep back into the van and sit with them, just to take the edge off.  But since that wouldn't accomplish anything, and it would also probably be a bit creepy, she left that option off the table.

It had been at least an hour since the others had gone off to sleep, and she was idling around outside the van.  The pipe still dangled from her hand, ready to deter any unwanted visitors at her discretion.  She wasn't sure how effective it would be at warding off someone with a gun, or someone too crazy to care, but she figured that it was a decent enough weapon in her hands.  A full baseball swing with that thing could probably put a hole in someone's skull.  Not that she wanted to have to do that, but the possibility was there.

A uncomfortable, chilling possibility...

THUNK

A metallic sound came from behind one of the junkers, and she turned to meet it.  She didn't see anyone there, but she was on notice.  Still keeping her distance, she slowly stepped to the side, waiting to see if whatever was hiding behind the truck would reveal itself.  Her grip tightened on the pipe as she held it to the side, ready to swing if necessary.

Charlie hadn't had a chance to see how well armed the mystery figure was, putting her in the midst of a frustrating mixture of being pleased with her own reflexes and irritated that she knee-jerked. Moving out again would be too risky, another chance for motion to catch the eye.

Motion. Untrained shooters, poor trigger discipline.

Charlie cast about, and then alighted on a chunk of rock. Carefully she crouched down, leaned over to it, and scooped it up. Deep breath, and then she lobbed it in an arc up and over the truck, towards where she'd seen the figure.

Then she tensed for the gunfire.

Kassandra watched both sides of the truck from her position. There were only two ways for the intruder to emerge, and she wasn't going to be caught off guard by either of them. If they wanted to come for her, then they would have to face her head-to-head. And if they made that choice, then she wouldn't make it easy for them.

With her gaze wavering from one side of the truck to the other, she had no reason to expect anything coming from above. So when a sizable object suddenly took flight from over the roof, her first reaction was panic. She dashed and dove to the side, coming very close to crashing into the side of the van in the process. She stared at the projectile that had come to rest, fearing that it was a grenade of some sort.

A brief visual inspection revealed that it was actually a rock. Would have been a real bitch if it had hit her, but for now, it was a non-threat. However, this proved beyond all doubt that she hadn't been hearing things. There was someone behind that truck.

She got back to her feet and stared down her mystery assailant's hiding place. If they were trying to scare her off, it wasn't going to work.

All right. No gunfire.

Actually, the sound that met Charlie's ear was more like someone landing heavily on the ground, as if tripping over. Spooked, maybe, or just getting behind cover. Hard to say. At least she'd confirmed it wasn't just panicked imagination that had drawn a human-like shape into an actual person. Someone was definitely there.

She wished she had some kind of mirror or something. She could have fixed it to the end of the knife and then used it to look around the corner.

She considered a moment, though, that throwing the rock had certainly made apparent her general location. Charlie needed to move.

"I know you're there," she called out.

In a low crouched walk, Charlie moved around the far side of the truck, the opposite to which she'd initially ducked behind. The bed of it was loaded up with a mound of dirt and debris, making it rise up to give more cover than it might have otherwise.

Easier to see if she was going to get flanked, too.

What was the game here? what could she gain from this?

Just focus on the situation.

Oh, so they could talk. Kassandra wished they would have tried that before chucking a rock as a form of communication.

Nothing changed about her approach, though. They might have been speaking, but they still didn't sound too friendly to her. If they had been aiming for diplomacy, then she figured that they would have led with the discussions instead of hiding and tossing a rock at her. In that context, she considered her apprehensiveness to be very well-founded.

But since they were talking now, she might as well talk back.

"What are you doing?"

She didn't let her voice waver. If she showed weakness, that would only empower the coward. She needed to stay strong and in control of the situation.

A voice called back which Charlie didn't recognise. A girl's voice, though not one that was immediately familiar to her. There was a slight accent that she couldn't place, nothing distinct enough for her to pick out properly. She liked to pride herself on her attention to detail, but without any frame of reference, she didn't have enough to go on.

Maybe if Charlie could get some more out of her...

Charlie leaned upward and snagged another small rock from the heap in the truck bed. The pile shifted slightly and she froze, wondering for an instant if she was about to bring the entire thing down on her head. The motion stopped. Charlie breathed out.

She tossed that next rock across the way, though not towards the voice, crossing horizontally from her position and impacting another rusted-over vehicle with a heavy thud and a deep sonorous echo.

Seriously? More with the fucking rocks? This time they didn't even throw it at her. They just tossed it at another car for some unexplained reason. Were they just trying to waste her time? Because they weren't accomplishing much more than that. This confrontation was starting to seem a bit less threatening and more just annoying.

Or maybe that was their plan, to try to throw her off her guard by doing weird shit before they rushed in. Hell, with what she had already seen, they could have been up to anything. It couldn't get much crazier than exploding windows or random raging fat guys. Or maybe it could. Hell if she knew what to expect from the world these days.

After only a few moments spent focusing on the sad little rock that had rebounded off of the rusted steel, Kassandra looked back at the old truck to address her unseen annoyance.

"Seriously, what is it with you and rocks?"

They spoke again. Again the slight accent. She'd definitely heard that voice before, more than once.

Wait, she had it.

Kassandra. Tall girl, more or less her own height and build. Less than one of the shining lights of society, though Charlie wasn't sure that any such moral or patriotic grounds stood any longer. She hadn't killed anyone, though in Charlie's opinion that didn't mean very much. There were many things a person could do to another without actually killing them. Moreover, the moment the announcement was concluded, it was outdated intelligence. There was enough time between now and then for all manner of things to have happened.

As Charlie well knew, it only took a couple of moments to commit a murder.

She ignored the question. If Kassandra wasn't going to connect the dots, then Charlie wasn't going to do it for her.

Shit, they knew her name. Considering her general reputation around school, that was more likely to be a disadvantage than not. But on the bright side, at least she hadn't been on the announcements. That would have been hard to explain away. Now if only Kassandra had voice-recognition powers of her own to figure out who she was talking to. She was good with faces, not voices. And even then, only the faces she bothered to remember.

But on the bright side, they didn't throw anything this time.

So they were taking a casual approach. Despite the way this all started and the fact that they were still hidden from each other. If that was the way they wanted to take things, then very well. Kass could play along.

"And you picked an interesting place to creep."

Charlie wanted to move again. She'd both thrown something and spoken from this position, and if Kassandra was smart, she'd be tracking motion and voice and already have a pretty good idea of exactly where she was. She was certainly directing her voice towards the general area.

It was never wise to underestimate an enemy, and that was what everyone was right now. Either an enemy or—no, no either. No Peters opening up his medical kit and helping her with his own supplies for no reason but that he thought it was the right thing to do. Everyone was an enemy. No potential or maybe about it. If they didn't realise that fact, then all the more reason to stay on her guard.

For instance, Vaitaki could be talking to keep her distracted and focused in that direction. There could easily be someone else sneaking up from the side to catch her out, and caught out was as good as dead.

Why hadn't she moved already?

Charlie planted her back foot and sprang forward, darting away from the truck and towards the next available piece of cover; the carcass of what had been a shipping container, now filled with what appeared to be a wedge of solidified junk. She kept low and moved fast, breathing measured and quiet.

She slid behind the container, gouging up a streak of dirt with her heel as she halted. Charlie hadn't looked around as she'd moved, too focused on keeping the time out in the open to an absolute minimum. No gunfire this time either. Vaitaki probably didn't have a firearm, though the possibility of a gun in play still couldn't be discounted.

Charlie remained quiet this time, gauging for a reaction.

"I saw you run over there."

Kassandra was getting tired of this chick already. And she knew it was a chick now because of the few seconds she had sight of her while she was running to a new hiding place. She didn't get a positive ID on the face because the girl didn't look at her, but she knew they were tall and had short hair, so that narrowed down the list of suspects.

Still didn't change the fact that they were stressing her right the hell out, though.

Kassandra watched the husk of steel or iron or whatever the hell it was that the other girl was using as a shield now. All they had done was expose themselves and change the piece of junk that she was keeping her attention on, so bravo to them for that. She didn't really care for these mind games, though. She just wanted whoever this was to leave so she could have some peace.

"If you're just gonna run around, take it somewhere else."
