8:12 AM, Saturday, September 18th, 2021: Central Oregon Highway

A slight breeze blew over the top of Sean Hill's patrol car, rustling the leaves of the nearby forest trees. His lips were covered in crumbs, his fingers stained with the glaze of the donuts that he had been partaking in. A half empty box of the things sat in the passenger seat to his right. He had been holed up here on the side of the road for a while now, with his radar gun pointed out the side of his window. He had just gotten situated on his usual route an hour ago, and he was short on his ticket quota for the month. His vehicle was hidden by a particularly dense patch of brush and the curve of the road, so it was only a matter of time until someone came along.

Unfortunately for him, when his radar gun finally went off, he only had the chance to catch a glimpse of what had caused it before it sped off into the distance. He craned his head out of the window to catch a glimpse of some speedster abusing his Gift to get somewhere real fast. Running that fast technically wasn't speeding, but using your powers in public like that was considered reckless endangerment. Not that it really meant much to Mr. Hill in this case, since his car topped out at 140 miles per hour, and that guy had been going at nearly 160. He just hoped for that guy's sake that he knew how to slow down, else he was going to turn into a red smear the instant he hit anything.

Shrugging his shoulders and resolving not to worry too much about that issue, he pulled up his phone to take a look at his Facebook feed. The cell signal was pretty spotty out here, but he was still getting about two bars of service. He sat there for some time, mindlessly swiping away, the occasional car that for some reason wasn't speeding driving past (maybe he wasn't as well hidden as he thought?), until a headline caught his attention.

"FIVE DEAD AND MILLIONS OF DOLLARS STOLEN IN THE BIGGEST HEIST VEGAS HAS EVER SEEN - SUSPECTS STILL AT LARGE"

Well, that was something you don't see every day. Probably some new group of hoodlums using their powers to pull it off. How, though? His eyes scanned over the bullet-point summary of events just before the article itself.
  • A small, seemingly highly-coordinated group of criminals used their Gifts to rob Nero's Palace in Vegas, taking nearly all of the cash the casino had on-site.
  • The alarm was only raised when the three security guards in charge of watching the security cameras were found dead in their booth. All security footage for that day was destroyed according to upper management.
  • Eleven employees are now being questioned regarding their involvement in the heist, several of them having admitted to helping the perpetrators for unknown reasons.
  • Two vigilantes known to the people of Las Vegas were found dead nearby with injuries matching those inflicted on the security guards. Police currently believe they attempted to stop the perpetrators while they were making their getaway.
  • Despite numerous eye-witness accounts in the Casino and around Vegas, the suspects are thus far unidentified. Only their vehicle has been identified, an unmarked black van bearing a fake license plate from the state of Montana.
  • Authorities are urging anyone with potential information about these criminals to contact them immediately.
Sean grimaced at the thought of what the officers in Vegas were going through. Something like this was a PR disaster for the whole department, and he knew the mayor would be calling for blood. He was glad that nothing like that ever happened here in Oregon. Small blessings he supposed, there's no way he or any officer he knew would stand a ghost of a chance against whoever, or whatever, managed to pull off that heist of the century.

His train of thought was only interrupted when his radar gun went off, a car having blasted past him at over 90 miles per hour. He dropped his phone in his lap and turned on his sirens. It was time to go.
