The Spire

Standing tall on a rocky cliff on the islands west coast, the lighthouse overlooks the entire island. Sparsely furnished, it doesn't offer much shelter for a student looking for comfort - but climb the spiral stairs to the top, and thanks to a telescope positioned next to the light one would be able to see all the way to the Eastern Shore on the island's opposite side.

It seemed that everywhere he went, he found bodies. Rotting flesh, the foul smell of it assaulted his nose. There was a sheet covering the corpse. Karl found his hand move to remove the sheet so he could see the face. He vaguely recognized the body. When it was alive, it might have been called Benjamin Latimer. But now it wasn't. Now it was just a body.

He moved away from the body, not even bothering to cover it up again, and made his way inside.

There wasn't much to find. His eyes adjusted to the dark interior, showing that indeed there was nothing much to take in, with only a few furnishings. He spotted a set of stairs, which probably led to the outside. He moved over to the base of the stairs. Then he looked it up and down.

"It's going to rain soon," he said, looking over to Carol, "but I say we check it out."

((GMing approved.))

Evidently there wasn't much to check out up top. There was a telescope there, and Karl wanted to see if they could use it as an early warning system. The problem, other than the rain that was soon about to fall, was that the telescope had such a small field of view, the island was so big, and that there were only a few of left, that the usefulness of the telescope was diminished rather far. So he decided against it, and they both made their way down again. They decided to block the door, so that it would be hard for anyone to break through it. They pushed a cabinet in front of the dooway. This would be a good spot to stay, Karl thought.

Of course it wasn't. The announcement made sure of that. Karl had barely gotten the rest he'd wanted, but the crackling of the PA system meant that his naptime was over. He had to listen carefully now, especially since-

"All of yesterday's danger zones remain in effect, but I'm also adding The Mall and The Lighthouse to the list. That means if you're not in the jungle or the hotel, you're dead."

-they were now inside a ticking time bomb.

His collar gave one audible beep.

"Carol? Carol! We have to leave! Now!" he barked. There was no time to waste. He quickly made it to the cabinet in front of the door and began to push it away. The beeping quickened. He had finally opened up a gap large enough for them to fit through. He ran back inside to grab his bag his gun, and to make sure Carol was right behind him.

As the beeping got faster so did their pace. And they ran until the infernal noise ceased.

And then they ran some more.
