This entire area is quite dank.

Open, Day 4, just after the announcements.

The east side of the community housing shows the wear of abandonment. The wilderness has started to reclaim the land the village was built on, meaning that many of the houses furthest from the center have become overgrown with vines and plants. The frequency of tropical storms has had a more noticeable impact on this side of the village as well. Some of the houses have been hit with debris from uprooted trees, while others have been torn asunder by a combination of debris, rain and wind. This has left a scattering of large wooden boards painted various colors across the entire area.

Brandon watched carefully as the two approached the house. Adonis had taken the lead with Myles behind him. Brandon took note of that as he moved out of his cover and slowly made his way towards the house in a crouch walk.

His right hand ached as it clenched around his blade. It was an integral part of what was to come and he couldn't afford to mess it up, still he felt his hand shake in it's place and he couldn't tell if it was excitement or fear at his plan. Things could go wrong in a jiffy with these two. The corpse of Tristan had shown that.

Myles was lagging behind though and once the boy was past the doorframe and was moving inwards proved the impetus for Brandon to swoop in with a rough grab with his left hand for the hair and swiveling the blade into place.

"I am." He responded as it made contact. A slight one, but contact nonetheless. He had lowered his head slightly as if to deepen his voice as he talked. "Don't move."

As soon as Adonis took a few more steps into the house; he wasn't sure what he was supposed to feel and he wondered if Myles would forgive him for being a failure of a decent human being. He didn't really understand why he was giving Adonis a chance to do things right again and maybe he was just being naïve about it. Maybe he was just hoping to cling onto the other boy for as long as he could and that was a very selfish thing to do. Especially when he knew that Myles and Tristan....

He tensed up for a moment and he stopped walking, turning to look back at Myles.

"I don't thi-"

Adonis felt his eyes widen in shock as he saw another boy manhandling Myles and he had a blade against Myles' neck, making Adonis feel panic taking him over slowly. He had to not lose it this time. He had to keep himself under control and he had to keep his mind calm. But now he was feeling worried about what Brandon was doing and Adonis felt like a complete fool for not checking his surroundings more carefully. He had just put Myles in danger and he had to do something about it.

"What-What do you want from us, Brandon?" He asked, keeping his eyes on Brandon cautiously and he was trying to hold back from yelling at Brandon to let Myles go.

Zach closed in on the boys’ cabin. He kept low as he kept to the sides of the identical buildings. The hair on the back of his neck was standing on end. This could go either of two ways:

Everyone was chill and would be open to having a little chat before Zach left for parts unknown.

Or...

They could see Zach as a threat or easy target, gang up on him, kill him, and take his stuff.

Just in case of the latter scenario, Zach kept his hand near the handle of his gun. He steadied his breathing as best as he could as he reached the entrance of the cabin. Ducked under the front window, Zach noticed the front door was opened and he could hear a voice.

“W-What do you want from us, Brandon?”

They sounded nervous. Zach peaked from behind from the door frame, and his eyes widened. One the boys, who Zach recognized as Myles Roux, a school gossip, being held hostage by Brandon Murphy. In front of them was Adonis Cohen, who Zach had pranked once back home.

Without saying a word, maybe because he skipped a breath, Zach whipped behind the door frame before anyone noticed. He slowly, with shaky hands, pulled out his gun. He checked to see if the gun was loaded, and if the safety was on.

Wait.

What are you doing? Trying to play fucking hero? That wasn’t part of the plan.

Zach paused, listening in on the what was happening inside. He decided to wait and see where this would lead before doing something crazy.

There was a delay of just a second or two between getting grabbed by the hair and Myles shrieking like a girl, and unfortunately that span of time was just enough for Adonis to turn around so that Myles looked and sounded even dumber when it happened.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Of course he'd be worrying about what was in the house when there was someone creeping up behind them. Of course. This was all Adonis's fault too; if they'd had a third person, they wouldn't have been so easy to surprise.

Myles would have been inclined to say some of that out loud, but when he moved, the edge of the blade nicked the soft skin of his throat with just the tiniest sting. Okay. Alright. Not moving, as requested.

Do something, he thought at Adonis with as much venom as he could dredge up out of his shock and the terror that was trying to mount behind it. Maybe don't do something, actually, given Adonis's track record. They could though, right? The guy grabbing Myles, whose name escaped him because he couldn't place the voice and all he could see was the arm holding the big fuckoff blade to his neck, he wanted something. This wasn't just a straight-up murder.

Not yet.

A scream burst from the house and Brandon felt his grip tighten as a response. As if it would silence Myles and not warn everyone on this damn island that something was going down. It didn't take long before he'd stopped and specks of red were in the corner of his eye.

At first he'd been worried that his hostage had gone and killed himself like an idiot, instead he'd just scared himself into submission. Brandon did not have to do anything if they kept making mistakes like this.

He did his best to keep his face impassive as Adonis asked his question. What did Brandon want? A simple question on the surface with no easy answer on his part. The boy he held could easily be killed with Adonis not being able to do anything about it. But was that what he wanted? It would insure that all he would have to do towards the end is hide. Let the rest of the nutjobs finish the fight for him.

All he would have to do is move his hand and a river of red would flow down onto them. A small prize to pay for a way home. Even if the cameras are recording their every move and were probably pin pointed at them at this moment. Even if his parents were watching, horrified at his actions. Even if strangers online will judge and critique his every movement, make images of him and a narrative of how much a monster he was.

If he got home, no. When he got home, he would control that narrative and show them all.

If he could just move his hand. Just a bit.

...

"The bag." He said as he made eye contact with Adonis. "Tristan's bag, the one you took from his body. Hand it over."

Adonis felt himself wince as Brandon mentioned Tristan and he felt worse as it seemed like Brandon had witnessed everything that had happened between him and Tristan back then. He never thought that this would be happening because of his mistake with the boy that he had stabbed to death and that Brandon had been basically stalking him and Myles the whole time after they had left that forsaken place.

Myles is in danger. Don't just stand there like a bumbling idiot, Adonis! Do something!

"Okay, okay. I'll give you the bag. Just...." Adonis said in a calm tone even if he was screaming in a panic internally and he carefully put the bags down on the ground, just picking Tristan's bag up once more hesitantly. "....Just don't hurt Myles. Please...."

He knew that he had no right to beg but he couldn't help it. He didn't want to lose Myles because of how he had messed up once again and he didn't know if he could handle it if Myles died because of him. He already hated himself for Tristan's death that he caused and he'd rather have Myles being upset at him than having him dead at his feet. He just needed to not mess up his exchange with Brandon. He had to do the right thing this time.

He made his way over to where Myles and Brandon were standing in the doorway and he held out the bag to Brandon's open hand, hoping that this would go well without anyone else dying.

Okay, so Brandon wanted Tristan’s bag. As Zach recalled from the announcements that morning, Tristan was stabbed by Adonis. Now he was being harassed for what he did? That was the kind of thing Zach was afraid of happening. He felt kinda sorry for Adonis. Whatever reason he had for killing Tristan, in this game you gotta do whatever it takes to live.

Zach looked down at his gun. He flipped the safety off. Was he really gonna be a hero? Was he just gonna abandon his plan to stay low from some chumps? From what he saw, Brandon didn’t have a gun, so Zach had a range advantage. He could just hold Brandon at gun point and order him to let go of Myles. Then again, that could prompt Brandon to just kill Myles outright.

Once again, Zach hesitated. He kept his breathing low. He held his gun close to him. His finger was on the trigger. If Adonis would just hand Brandon that bag, things would be okay. Right? Zach kept waiting.

Everything felt like it was moving slow as molasses. The guy holding Myles's hair wasn't speaking fast enough. Adonis wasn't moving to hand over the bag fast enough. When Tonya had tackled him off the pier, there had been only a few moments of the freezing panic, but now it just kept spreading. He felt hot and cold all over.

It was going to be fine. It had to be fine. This wasn't- The whole stupid world just liked to have a joke at his expense, and that seemed to have been going on for weeks now, but Myles couldn't just die like this.

Take the bag and go. Take it and get out. It's not like there aren't a few dozen corpses laying around that you could probably take stuff from, somehow this was easier, but whatever, take it and go.

Sweat trickled down the back of Myles's neck. He couldn't even breathe in too deeply for fear of the blade cutting him open, and the collar, which he'd managed to mostly forget about, suddenly felt chokingly tight and heavy. He couldn't turn around and stare some sense into the person holding him, so he fixed his eyes on Adonis instead.

Don't you screw this up.

It was another robbery. You didn't have to be the smartest person in the room to understand that. It still felt surreal, though. Catherine had seen the effect of robbings on people. Literally. Marco had lost whatever pebbles he once had and threw them into the oceans when Willow and Sierra robbed him.

Adonis and Myles were the victims of the robbery this time around. Was she supposed to jump out and stop it? Scream to make it stop, just force everyone to lower their weapons? Adonis had protected her. Did that mean anything now since he had killed Tristan? Was she supposed to trust him? Help him when he could twist the knife into her guts?

She realized in this moment that, fundamentally, she was a selfish person who wanted to do what was right. It was a conflict she had to face.

But right now, she just crouched. Making herself as small as possible, she listened in on the voices. If she were to do something now, it would probably just make the situation worse. At least, that's what she told herself to find peace. Something about sleeping at night. She just prayed that no guns would be fired and nobody would be hurt.

In a way, she knew this wouldn't happen. She just didn't want to jinx it.

Guilt was a powerful tool in the right hands and Brandon had brandished it with glee. He had them now. All he had to do was mention Tristan and that spark in Adonis was not there. Not with Myles's life in his hands. Even he is not going to make the same "mistake" twice it seems.

If things went this swimmingly going forwards, then maybe he didn't have to hide the entire time? While Brandon knew he was not liked back home, s'not like he was a murderer like Adonis. Who stepped forward with the bag in hand as if he would reach out and grab it.

"T'was a pleasure." He said as he retracted the blade and roughly shoved Myles forward into Adonis. As the two collided, Brandon grabbed the bag from his hand, turned round and ran almost tripping out the door as he did so. On his knee for a few seconds, he quickly regained his balance before running off to the side.

He'd done it! He was not going to spend the rest of this game hiding away in the dark whilst others got the spoils, no. Brandon was ready for this. With more supplies at hand, he just needed to get his hands on a gun and then-

Suddenly he felt his ears pop from a deafening sound behind him.

And his balance was gone. And soon Brandon's world was dark as he faceplanted onto the ground.

Adonis was taken aback as Myles was shoved right into him and he was almost knocked onto his butt by the collision. Brandon had then taken the bag from his hand quickly and he had dashed out of the door with his prize of having Tristan's former belonging. He felt his arms wrapping themselves around Myles' body and his body was starting to tremble. He had been so scared that Brandon would have killed Myles right there and he knew that he had to keep a better eye on Myles. He had to try harder to protect him from danger. He couldn't be a useless idiot anymore.

"Myles, I-"

He was suddenly cut off by a noise outside.

That sounded like a....

A gunshot.

Adonis knew that Brandon hadn't had a gun. ....So who?

Sounded like things were wrapping up inside. Great, guess Zach didn’t have to play hero after all. So, guess he could go on and—

Suddenly, just as Zach was about to relax, Brandon had stumbled out of the cabin and tried to run off. Zach was so startled, he had raised his weapon without thinking, tightened his finger on the trigger, and his ears were assaulted by the flurry of gunfire.

The next thing Zach knew, he was knocked back onto the ground. The power of the gun must have pushed back on him, causing him to lose balance. Mercifully, Zach was unharmed. Brandon, on the other hand, was on the ground, bleeding.

Zach got to his feet, walking towards the bullet riddled Brandon. There was no doubt, Zach did this. He opened fire on a living person.

FUCKING SHIT! NICE GOING FUCKBOY!

Before Zach could process any further, he saw Brandon trying to move.

Might as well finish the mess you made.

Zach squeezed the trigger again, and the short round of bullets extinguished what little there was remaining of Brandon Murphy’s life.

Sound was gone as he laid there. All he could hear was his labored breathing and a ringing noise that kept going without stop. All thoughts that circled around in his head were in complete disarray. A fight for cohesion in his mind was ongoing as he struggled to blink or breathe.

When Brandon finally managed to keep his eyes open, it revealed his glasses were gone, having flung off his face in his fall and moving his head to look took an immense effort on his part over the pain in his chest which felt like someone had stuffed him in an oven for an hour then poured coal on top for fun afterwards. Trying to move his head to the side proved fruitless and so were the attempts at turning around. His hands were attempting to push him off the ground to get some leverage or at least let him look around, but they gave up a quarter of the way.

Slowly, sound returned to him, but the ringing would not cease. And so were the sounds of footsteps around him.

This wasn't how it was supposed to go! He finally got the courage to do something! He was going to prove he was a survivor, not a coward! Unlike whoever was behind this. Who was it?!

He tried again and again to push himself up if only to get a glimpse of this person, but he could not do it. His body would not respond.

Faintly, in the blur of the world something was moving.

WHO WAS IT?! The coward had a gun! And look at what Brandon did with just a sword! He should have had it!

God damn it all!

The warmth was all encompassing as another shot rang through the air.

It….wasn’t….fair…

The blade vanished from against Myles's neck, and he was unceremoniously shoved face-first into Adonis's chest. For a few seconds, he couldn't feel anything except relief so strong that it made his knees weak.

The crack of the gun just outside, too close, brought him back to reality. Myles disentangled himself from Adonis's arms, one hand flying to his throat to feel the small cut and thin trickle of blood there.

"We're getting out of here," he said hoarsely. "We have to- find a window or something, we can't go back out that way. We need to be somewhere else. Too many people here." The relief was fading fast, and Myles opted to let frustration replace it instead of the panic that wanted to break loose. They needed some shelter, a break, but everywhere they went-

God. If he'd known that every other person he ran into was going to be a weapon-swinging maniac, he wouldn't have even bothered with the fake robbery right at the beginning. This was ridiculous.

Catherine's first reflex was to welp. It was a tiny shriek that was uncontrolled. It wasn't loud, but it was too loud. Her empty hand went on her mouth. She hoped the gunshot had covered the sound she had just make.

She forcefully shut her eyes. Catherine didn't want to see. The gunshot, the screaming, everything indicated someone had just died, and Catherine didn't want to see. It was selfish. With one hand over her mouth and the other searching the wall behind her, Catherine slowly tried to reassure herself that she was safe like a child that was hiding underneath their blanket. If she couldn't see them, they couldn't see her.

Them.

Adonis and Myles.

Were they dead? Were they killer?

The wall was cold. It was a nice contrast. Her eyes hurt from the pressure that she was inflicting on them. It was a nice distraction from the noises that came outside of the closet door. She slid down the wall. Her shirt went up her back. Another distraction. It wasn't quiet. She needed something else. Her fingers dug into her cheek. The pain changed her mind as she kept slowly but surely made her way down to the floor.

She tried to focus on her breathing. It didn't work. It felt like she was breathing in acid. Was it always this hot in the closet? No, it wasn't. It was supposed to be cold. The wall was supposed to be cold. Her chest felt like it was about to explode. She was dizzy. Even if it hurt, her chest rapidly raised and compressed itself. She kept her hand pressed against her mouth. She didn't want to scream even if her lungs were begging to be let go.
