What a Wicked Way to Treat the Girl That Loves You

Open

The largest building in the village is the commissary. With a large wooden sign hanging above the entrance and painted with a colorful mural showing various scenes from nature, it is the most eye-catching building as well. The interior of the commissary is a large hall laid out very simply with rows of tables and benches. There is also a separate kitchen area and storeroom present. This area appears to have been subject to a raid by the island's monkey population, as many pots and pans lie scattered in the kitchen area, while the storeroom has many overturned boxes and items knocked from shelves.

Well, this was quite the situation that Jeff had gotten himself into. He jumbled the argument as presented through his head: Tonya was holding a giant-ass blade on a girl because she wanted to make the girl STOP freaking out. Did he have that right, because that didn't make a lick of sense. Jeff had done a few motivational speeches in his life, and one thing that usually stuck with him was that threatening people with violence didn't tend to get results. He'd tried that, and coach told him that if he did it again, he'd be kicked off the team. Also, everyone laughed at him. Again.

"Yeah, Tonya..." he began, only to get cut off as Tanisha suddenly took point beside him, brandishing her shotgun. Well, crap. Tonya's proposal was that if they did nothing, she wouldn't do nothing, and wouldn't you know it, leveling a scattergun at someone seemed to Jeff like a big load of something that they just did.

"Whoa, hey!" he protested to Tanisha, placing a hand on the top of her shotgun and trying to gently shove it down to the floor. "I know Tonya, alright? We're cool. Everything's cool."

Despite being the advocate for peace all of a sudden, it didn't escape Jeff's notice that the only reason he wasn't going to town on Tonya was that he'd gone to a stupid overblown dance party with her one time. It was all well and good to be trying to calm the situation, but it was all self-motivated. And if Tonya ended up trying to cut someone up, the fact that he didn't stop her here would probably be weighing on him.

"Now if you put your sword down," he said to Tonya, "we'll put our weapons down, and we'll chat like civilized friggin' human beings. Sound good?"

"I... I wasn't... I wasn't freaking out," Cammy said, her voice hoarse. Her panic rapidly faded, about on pace with Jeff's energy.

No, she wasn't freaking out. She'd already gone through that before. She was wallowing in her self-misery, she was completely empty inside, she was feeling completely pathetic and useles... but she wasn't freaking out.

She wiped a few stray tears from her eyes, before looking around under the tables. Her headband was still under one. Her weapon was still under another. Well. From her position, she supposed she could actually go and get the headband. So she did. She reached her hand under the table, grabbing at it. Once her fingers grasped it, she pulled it out from under the table.

Cammy stood up, shaking the headband before putting it back on her head.

"I'm fine."

She was not.

Well, fuck. Shit. That was a big ass-gun Tanisha was carrying, and the way she was talking did not make Tonya any more confident that she was gonna get outta this shit fine and dandy. She'd have to, of course, think of some kinda manner to get slip on out, but the lady carrying the shotgun didn't make that task any easier. Sure, she could probably outrun her, considering, her, ahem, body type, but Jeff was a whole 'nother story.

Jeff, though, was also the one trying to keep everything chill here, which was honestly the weirdest thing she'd witnessed in like, ever. Like, what the fuck, again, because seriously, that was not the way things were meant to go down. But she'd take it. He was on her side, and she had to keep him there.

"Yeah, it's all cool," She said, even if what were meant to be reassurances still came out sounding more like a hiss. She wanted things to be chill, yes, but she also wanted these people to get the hell away. "Like, reaaaal cool."

Her plan was already going up in flames. See, Tonya was trying to get through this, get back home, avoid seeing anyone she really knew, not get attached like some kinda male anglerfish. Symbio-whatever relationships were a strict no-go here, and she wasn't some kinda damsel in distress who needed saving. She was gonna get herself out of this, because she had to. Maybe there was a lil' ache in chest, knowing that she was gonna up and run as soon as things went good or went south here, but it was survival. That was the name of the game.

She eyed everyone suspiciously, looking at Tanisha, Jeff, and finally, Little Miss Sadsack, who finally managed to get whatever she was looking for instead of blubbering like an idiot. What, was she too scary for her? Was she just the scary black girl? That was not right, not good, and she would not tolerate it, and back in Tennessee, she wouldn't have, but here? They weren't just throwing words 'round. They were throwing weapons.

"Fine, let's talk," She replied back to Jeff, slowly slipping the machete, apparently, into her messenger bag. Was still sticking out, just a little, but no need to fight now. Just for a moment. "So, what'd you wanna talk about? Our death? Yeah, 'cause that's a real good topic."

A long, long sigh followed. Another step and look, backwards, towards the exit. Didn't want to be here, didn't want to be with people she'd remember. Didn't want to see their faces, not here, not anywhere, 'cause it was easier. It had to be easier.

When Jeff put his hand on Tanisha's gun, she was fine lowering it a bit. She wasn't seriously going to shoot Tonya. Tonya was clearly over her head this early on, and Tanisha just needed to put her down from going too far this soon. Cammy also seemed fine, even if she was crying a bit and having to adjust her appearance. Fortunately, Tonya was seeming to get the hint and was willing to back down and just talk.

"Well, mama," Tanisha said, pointing the shotgun to the floor. "We don't have to die, but we don't have to be murderers or aggressors. I'm gonna find my girls and see if we can hunker down somewhere. Safety in numbers and all that."

Tanisha glanced over at Jeff and Cammy, then back to Tonya.

"I know none of us want to die. But come on? Do we have to be the bad guys? Can't we try to take the high road?"

She really hoped so. If that memorial was any indication, it was easy to drive off the high road when the low road had less traffic on it.

As the weapons lowered, Jeff unhooked the shield from his left arm and just set it down in front of him. Everything seemed to be cooling off and tensions were easing. Cool stuff. Nobody had to take an elbow up the nose today. For now.

He stepped sideways, giving Tanisha room for her proposal. Truth be told, he wasn't onboard with the idea of killing people if he could avoid it. He had plenty of beefs with people, a list longer than his arm, but none of them were worth killing over. More like...shoving them into a creek or kneeing them in the gut. That sort of thing.

"Yeah, see, that's what I'm saying," he replied to Tanisha's proposal. "We get everyone together, and we'd be unstoppable. Anyone wants to start anything, there's half a dozen of us and one of them, and we STOMP that asshole into the dirt." He smacked his fist down into his palm for emphasis.

"Strength in numbers. Nobody could even touch us. What do you say?"

Seemed like a reasonable suggestion to him. They take all the weak, defenseless kids under their umbrella, shut out all the predators, isolate them, and ka-BAM! These psychos wanted a kill a day? Well, they'd just track down the jerkasses and do THEM in. 'Course, this plan needed everyone to be okay with it, but why would anyone say no to this? It was perfect.

This was better. It still wasn't great, which was the understatement to end end all understatements, and Camellia still felt completely useless, but at least people weren't growling at her or yelling and banging the walls.

She still felt like crap, though.

Cammy didn't really feel like talking here. She was just going to listen, to be as much of a non-presence as possible. At least the two that weren't Tonya were behaving reasonably, but that shotgun in Tanisha's hands still made her nervous.

When Jeff spoke, about getting people together, she was following him well up until he said the word 'stomp'. At that point, Cammy physically flinched.

She opened her mouth to speak, hesitated, and closed it again. She tried again after a few seconds.

"N-No stomping people... p-please?"

Well, thankfully, someone saw reason and put down their gun. Of course, that someone also had to start calling her mama, because that's all she was, the hoodrat baby mama, charity case, welfare queen, whatever. Tanisha certainly wasn't earning any sympathy from Tonya here, and yeah, maybe she did let out the littlest of eye rolls as she went on, but fine, her ears were open to new ideas. She was listening, for whatever that was worth nowadays.

And mmm, hippy girl was there too, and wow! She was speaking more! And asking questions, too! Still sad, still pathetic, still way too pacifistic for her own damn good to ever get outta here, but she was being slightly more active. Partial victory.

Her eyes locked straight back onto Jeff's, on his speech, on his offer. He was promising a group. He was promising safety in numbers. He was promising that they'd help the helpless, be some kinda Robin Hood shit out here, and nah.

"Well, mmm, stompin' or no stompin'," She began, already preparing to turn tail and get the fuck out of this cafeteria thing. "Really don't think I can. Gotta go find my people, ya know?"

Tonya smiled at the end of that, hoping that would help defuse the tension in the room. It was so thick it could be cut with a knife, really, a real big one, kinda like the one in her bag. She had to go. Jeff was nice now, sure, but again, he was big. He got angry just like that, and could probably punch a bitch out with one little tap. It wasn't safe to stay here, to stay with him. He was a threat, and she couldn't be near someone like that. Not at all, no no no no. Weren't any fairy tales up in this house, and she wasn't going to go believing any now.

She continued backing away, slowly, eyes firmly locked on the three people in front of her. Had to leave, because this was dangerous, yeah, because they could turn on her and cut her ass.

Was definitely not 'cause she couldn't bear to people she sorta, sometimes, maybe liked (well, Jeff) die right in front of her own ass. She was doing this for Patrice. That's why she had to go. Only reason.

"Really gotta go now, but thanks so much for not shooting up my ass."

Okay, it looked like the room was in agreement to not be completely fucking insane. Well, three-quarters of the room at least. Tanisha could see that Tonya was more than willing to just walk away then go along with any plan of theirs. Tanisha was disappointed, but she could probably get why. They didn't get off on the right foot, and Tonya was probably thinking of a lot more than they were. Tanisha had people on the island she cared about. Tonya might not have that. She did have a child back home, so maybe that's where her mind was.

"Alright," Tanisha said. "Tonya, take care of yourself, okay?"

Tanisha glanced to Jeff and Cammy.

"So yeah, I was going to check high ground for my friends. Either of you want to come with me? It's cool if you don't."

She wasn't sure if Jeff or Cammy would accept. Jeff seemed like he could move at her speed, but Cammy was a bit of a wild card. Still, she probably needed a friend here, so Tanisha was willing to be one for her. They needed friends in a place like this.

Jeff stared in bemusement and a bit of annoyance as his proposal flew through the air and nosedived right into the ground. Tonya especially seemed like she just wanted to back out of the whole thing altogether, and Jeff had to hide the irritation that was welling up, managing to only narrow his eyes and have an eyebrow start twitching. Considering that he'd normally start flinging names around, that was showing a lot of restraint, if he asked himself.

But sure. Fine. Whatever. If the lot of them wanted to just go off and do their own thing, he was sure they'd remember that he'd put the idea forward when the bullets started flying. But it'd be too late then, since they'd be all on their own, and all they'd have is regrets that they hadn't formed an awesome team when they had the opportunity. He'd like to say that he'd have the last laugh, but he's not the sort to get amusement at other people's suffering, unless it's, like, one of those rake gags. Those were always a hoot.

Where was he...oh, right, Tanisha still wanted to go off and find her friends. He'd agreed to do that before all this drama occurred, and that seemed like the best lead anyhow.

"Seems like a plan," he said. "Better than striking out on my own." He didn't look directly at Tonya, but a quick glance to the side would make his implications clear enough.

Now, about the cowering girl and Tonya...well, the latter had made it clear that she didn't want to be with them, and it'd be up to the former if she wanted to come with. He was tempted to just drag her along, but if she wasn't onboard with the plan, she'd just end up being a giant boat anchor anyway. Best to just leave it to her.

"Nice seeing you again, Tonya," he said as casually as he could manage. "Be careful out there."

Hopefully, the next time they met, it wouldn't be at opposite ends of a gun barrel.

Well, Tonya was planning on leaving. Camellia wouldn't admit it out loud, but she didn't feel comfortable around her. That might have had something to do with the tone she'd taken with her up until now, but Cammy couldn't really find herself caring too much about whether she stayed.

As for her, though...

She didn't want to kill anyone and it didn't seem like they were going to go around killing people. She didn't want to die and it didn't seem like they were going to kill her. If she stuck with them, she'd be safe, at least for a while. But then... eventually it was all going to end, wasn't it? Was the facade of safety enough for her to agree to go along with them? If she declined, and stayed here... well, that would be less safe. For now, the choice was obvious.

"I... okay," is all she said.

Now... if she could stop feeling so useless, she could hold her head up high. As it was now, though, her eyes stayed glued to the floor.

"Don't worry," Tonya replied, having to fight to keep the snark from seeping into her voice. "I definitely will."

There was that condescension, the kind that was there when old ladies would smile at her as she shopped with Patrice in tow, the kind there when teachers would tell her she was so brave, the kind that meant that she was nothing in their eyes than someone to be pitied, someone who wouldn't be able to do anything ever again because of how she fucked up now.

Tonya hated it, hated it so much that her blood would boil as if in a stove, but she breathed, didn't glare, even when Jeff looked to the side, even when he decided to judge her too. Assholes. idiots. Bitches. That's what they all were, nothing else.

Part of her needed the anger, needed it to focus, crystallizing the mind and allowing it to direct her where she needed to go. Meant she didn't have to think about anything else, the regrets or the tears, only the rage, the fury, the thrill.

It was stewing now, inside of her, but she let it make her turn around, let it make her start walking out the door, without ever looking back. If she looked back now, what would that mean?

It'd mean that she couldn't do this. Meant that she was just gonna be another sob story, another picture for politicians to cry about when they decried all this shit. Look at who they took, they'd say. Look at who they murdered.

Just another name on that big-ass memorial, just another memory. How would Ma and Pa explain to her baby what happened? They couldn't, no, because she was making it back. She called out to the people behind her, still not turning her head. It was dumb to speak, better off just leavin' without a word, but she couldn't, just couldn't.

"...Don't go bein' stupid, mmkay? That's all I ask."

With that, Tonya exited the cafeteria-kitchen thing, and walked away. A tear almost started to fall, but she closed her eyes to will it away. Big girls didn't cry. Only weak bitches who got killed did.

And that was it. Tonya was going to set off on her own, leaving Tanisha behind with Jeff and Cammy. It looked like they were both down with Tanisha's idea of searching the area for their friends and hunkering down somewhere. Once Tonya was gone, Tanisha shifted her shotgun to one hand.

"Alright. I guess we should get ready to go. I'll get my stuff and the map."

Tanisha turned back and left Jeff and Cammy in the dining area. She made her way back into the kitchen to see her bags right where she left them. She quickly picked her personal bag up and slung it over her shoulder. She reached back into the other bag to get the map out. She glanced over it. It was hard to believe this island was where she and the rest of her class were probably going to meet their end. She wondered if it had a name or if there was something on it that could help the US find them. That was something to think about as they walked around.

Tanisha zipped up the second bag and slung it over. She folded the map in half and held it in one hand, with the shotgun in her other, moving back to the dining area.

"Okay," she said keeping her gaze on the map as she walked back in. "I think we're in the village. I think if we head west we might get better vantage points."

She looked to the duo.

"Ready to go?"

Jeff had to stifle his disappointment when he saw Tonya walk out that door. Sure, she’d made his intentions clear, but against all logic, he’d been hoping that something would happen all of a sudden to change her mind. He didn’t want to see her leave, didn’t want what could be their last meeting to be such a sour one.

Eh, what was he saying? She was only relevant to him for one night and they’d never spoken to each other since. Why was he getting all mushy and sentimental about this? No. This was Jeff Greene’s island and if anything got in his way, even if he knew them, he’d have to just bulldoze them. If he let himself get distracted by regrets or feelings, he’d be splattered against a wall in no time.

Yeah, as if he could just turn those off.

At any rate, seemed like Tanisha had a plan for where to head next. Jeff hadn’t ever unshouldered his bags. Considering the cumbersome nature of his shield, taking them on and off just seemed like a real hassle.

“Yeah, I’m ready,” he replied, then turned to Cammy. “You’ll be alright. Between uh...” Oh right, he’d never actually learned their names, had he? He quickly recovered with, “Between her and me, nobody’s going to come near us.”

As long as they knew who they were talking about, names didn’t matter. That’s what he told himself anyway.

As Tonya left, Cammy let out a breath she didn't realize she'd been holding. Even being around the girl made her tense, so she allowed herself to relax just a little bit when she left.

Of course, they were going leave shortly as well. As everyone got ready to go, her eyes wandered under the tables again. She'd taken the time to get her headband back from under the table, but under the other the table lay her assigned weapon, still untouched since she woke up. When Tanisha asked if they were all ready to go, her thoughts returned to the bat. She didn't want to think about it. She didn't want to look at it. But...

If she left it there, would someone else eventually find it and try to use it? She shuddered at the mental image. She didn't want to leave it to the wrong hands, but she didn't want to take it, either. She didn't even want to touch it.

Still...

"Um, the... um, under the table," she said, pointing to the bat, "I don't... I don't wanna..."

Tanisha adjusted her glasses a bit at her two new allies. It wasn't as great as the Titty Brigade, but Tanisha could surely bond as much with Jeff and Cammy as she did with Joanne and Adele. Hell, she might be able to find a good name for the trio if she had time to think about it.

Cammy mentioned something under the bench and how she didn't want it. Tanisha tilted her head and saw the object. It was a bat with nails in it. Tanisha could see why Cammy was so afraid of it. That looked like the sort of thing that could make baby food out of someone's face.

"Yeah, we can take that too," Tanisha said.

She looked over at Jeff.

"You want it? I'm good with this gun, and it might be good to have with your shield."

Tanisha looked over to the door.

"Either way, I'll take the front. Follow me, y'all."

Tanisha made her way to the entrance and pushed the door open. This game was going to lead to a maelstrom of chaos, misery, and death over the next few weeks, and if Tanisha and her friends were to survive, they'd need to be ready for whatever came. Tanisha had a good gun, but that didn't guarantee she wouldn't be added to the memorial. At the very least, she had to make sure there would be at least one name that wouldn't be on the wall. Surely, she could accomplish that.
