She tried to look serious and tried to drag the whole conversation down into the direction of everybody apologising and quoting the bible and feeling sorry and sad and Darius would have to buy handkerchiefs in this store to get rid of the tears he would shed as a result of this tragedy of breaking Alvaro's poor innocent heart. No, this was not going to happen. At all.
"Oooh, I'm scared. What are you going to do? Tell the police I did a joke? Sue me and get me arrested? Geez, you have no clue what humour is."
Darius' voice was shaking and slowly fade away the last sentence, because it was ridiculous, so he giggled after he finished speaking. Alvaro meanwhile looked like he was hurt by a joke. What's his age? Twelve? Kingman, a place where people can deal with drugs but can not deal with words. That guy has some serious self-esteem issues. Darius was not insulted each time he was called fat or received some other insults. But eh, that was just evidence that he was more mature than this junior student. Like, how could this Alvaro guy even survive in school? Was there actually nobody who commented on him? Did he even socialise?
"Hey Fields, I cannot make jokes of you, since you're the only one in the room who has cool hair besides me", he said with a wink and a movement of his head, emphasising his falling hair. Ben was the only one in the room who wasn't whiny or aggressive. Except maybe the grocery clerk if they have to count pennies.
"But I can tell you the punchline of my joke. Where did John hide after the bombing?"
Darius put his hands together and quickly put them away again with a 'poof' sound he made.

Scarlett realized that trying to argue with Darius would be a waste of her time. So much for her trying to defend Alvaro. She hadn't done a very good job of it. Then Ben piped in and he was now telling Darius to.... Well, pick on him, she guess. Scarlett didn't know how to feel about that. On one hand, she felt grateful for Ben's help. On the other hand, she felt a bit embarrassed for the way she reacted to Darius. Maybe she went a little overboard. But now thankful, Darius was actually focusing on Ben. Which meant that she could let Alvaro get out of this situation. She wasn't going to continue to make a scene in front of everyone.
Scarlett was starting to step out of the way for Alvaro as she was blocking the way in front of him and she give him a small smile. "Alvaro, I'm sorry that Darius is being a bully to you. I think you should be able to escape from him now." She whispered to him quietly as the other two were talking to each other. "I think Ben will have this under control so I'm going to leave quickly too."
Scarlett was starting to step out of the way for Alvaro as she was blocking the way in front of him and she give him a small smile. "Alvaro, I'm sorry that Darius is being a bully to you. I think you should be able to escape from him now." She whispered to him quietly as the other two were talking to each other. Alvaro heard more things come from other people. He looked up, decided that he was going to hear whatever was said now. If people were going to mock him in front of him he needed to hear them. He needed to know their true feelings towards him, what they really thought about him. He was sure that Darius hated him. None of his friends would make that sort of comment towards him. It was probably a matter of if Ben or Scarlett thought the same. So he looked up. He was in a shopping center, carrying a trolley. He was basically surrounded by them at this point. Odds were he had to face the music sometime or later.
When he did look up, though, it was a little surprise for him that both Ben and Scarlett seemed to be on his side. Ben was getting up in Darius' face, saying something that Alvaro couldn't quite get the whole meaning of but could understand slightly. He was acting his role as an Anti Bullying Committee member and was seemingly protecting Alvaro. It was still entirely possible that Ben was protecting someone that Alvaro didn't like but right now Alvaro and him were definitely on the same side. He turned around, trying to see where Scarlett was, and she had moved, slightly. She told Alvaro that he could escape freely now, if he wanted to.
He almost wanted to take that offer and get away from Darius as soon as he could, but there was something he was doubting about the offer. Why was she allowing him to escape? Did she want him gone? Why so? Was she allowing him to leave so that she could talk freely about him without "hurting his feelings" or something like that? He didn't buy it. As much as he didn't want to, he was staying here.
"Um... I still kinda need to get stuff from this section," he said, turning his head between Scarlett and the fruits and vegetables section. It was true that he still needed to get his family's shopping, but at this point the only reason he was still here was that he didn't trust Scarlett.

Darius was one of the boys in the school somehow shorter than Ben was, so with the advantage of the high ground Ben scooped an arm around his prey's shoulders. Greasy ass shoulders these were. Ben propelled the both of them, his cart in tow behind because no man gets left behind. Except Alvaro and Scarlett. Ben offered them a brief backwards glance. God speed. Is what Ben wanted to dramatically impress with his gaze, but his eyes were blank. He really did not know what sort of emotional input this 'situation' demanded in it's lame conclusion.

Scarlett didn't know that Alvaro wanted to stay in this section to finish what he was doing. "Well, at least Darius is gone now, right?" Scarlett had turned her attention back to Alvaro. "I'll just get what I need and I'll leave you to it. I mean.... If you don't want my company, Alvaro." She genuinely wanted to help him get away from Darius and he was an idiot for believing that she wanted to trick him. She just wanted to help and now he blew it because he was an idiot who thought that she was trying to trick him for who knew what reason and now she was stuttering and seemed offended and it was all his fault for not being able to trust her. He had to make it up to her, somehow. A foot locked itself against his cart, he rolled it back and forth idly with lazy snaps of his ankle. Watched Darius do his eyebrow thing. Ugly. Even if Ben were gay (heaven forbid), or were willing to consider it (ditto) Darius was probably scraping the bottom of the barrel as far as eligible bachelo- why the fuck was Ben even entertaining this internal monologue.

Scarlett was glad that Alvaro didn't want her to go away. Also, he was now blushing. Wait, did he think that she liked him like a crush or something? Oh, she was hoping that she didn't come off that way. Now she could see that Alvaro was blushing. She didn't even think of him in a romantic way so she was feeling uncomfortable. She sighed a little in relief when he said that next bit. Good, good. Because she knew that Alvaro obviously liked someone else anyway. She had noticed. It's not that hard for her to figure out. And she also liked someone else too. She and Alvaro would never date. They would be better off as friends. Just friends and nothing else.

Oh god no now that he had said that he had made everything worse for him. Now Scarlett actually thought he was in love with her, saying that she didn't really think of him in that way and that she was okay with them just being friends. He waved his hands in the air for a bit. He had to explain. He had to make sure that Scarlett didn't get the wrong idea about what he said. If he didn't or left now then she'd probably actually be convinced that he liked her and he knew he didn't want her thinking that. If she ended up thinking that then she'd probably be too scared of him to go to the cafe and then he'd lose a friend and he certainly couldn't have that so he had to say something.

The 'fuck him' aside, everything else predicted seemed to hold. Ben sighed, letting his irritation vent away into his surroundings.
"Yeah. Dunno how any of what you just said constitutes a comeback in anyway, man." Ben shrugged. Turned his back on Darius, checked out the rows of herbs and spices he was standing besides. Didn't even know if any of them were worth getting. Somewhere in his head was the most recent kitchen inventory, just needed to dig a little. His stubby fingers clawed little glass tubes of exotic smelling whatever aside.
"And you were the one looking to pick a fight. Don't complain when you don't get the one you want." Brief annoyance of Darius trying to freak him out aside, dude wasn't so bad. Even if he still talked like it today the worst was probably in his past. He was still worth something. "You know how it goes. Fish for something don't complain about what you hook." Huh. Ben unceremoniously saved that line for his 'domestic disturbances' playbook.

Scarlett didn't realize that she completely made Alvaro basically go into a panic. And why did she even think that he liked her in that way? She didn't even know what she was thinking. She felt like a complete fool. She didn't mean to make things more complicated between them. She didn't even know what to say to him now.
Scarlett opened her mouth to speak but no sound came out. She closed her mouth and she shifted a bit uncomfortably.
Say something to him, Scarlett! Anything!
She cleared her throat and she gave Alvaro a gentle smile. "I didn't think you were in love with me. I'm sorry if I made things a bit confusing. I was just being silly, I think. Can we start over?" She asked unsurely and she held out her hand to Alvaro. It was shaking a bit. She needed to calm down and not scare off a new friend. "Can we be friends?"

Okay, she believed him. That was good; now he could leave if he wanted to. Did he want to do that, though? It'd mean he could get out of his situation if he wanted to but then he'd leave Scarlett by herself. Apparently she wanted to be friends with him, which could be literal or could mean that she just wanted to talk casually with him or could mean that she didn't really care about him but wanted to save face. Alvaro didn't know which; he tended to lean towards the negatives but this time all had their possible proof or evidence or something. Best not to think about it now. Best just to respond. He felt weird thinking that but he felt that it was the best option. She wanted to talk, and it'd look really weird if he flat-out just didn't respond to her.
But what to say? No answer to that question was appearing in Alvaro's head. As much as he didn't want to insult her or anything that was a weird thing to ask and anything that came out would just sound super awkward. Not as awkward though as not saying anything at all.
