Pardon the Dust

Early morning, before school, track field

Behind the school are some open spaces for sports events. Aurora High has a nice football field with bleachers, smaller baseball and soccer fields, and a tennis court. All of these areas are secured by fences and locked gates, though they are left open during daylight hours.

[Autumn Cobb starts here]

The sun hadn't even made its way over the horizon when Autumn made it to the track.  It was so early in the morning, it was quite possible she was the only one at the campus.  She smirked a little to herself as she surveyed the empty grounds.  Just the way she liked it in the morning.  She began her stretches, first the right leg, then the left, loosening the tendons and muscles as she prepped for her daily run.  She hummed as she began stretching her shoulders, twisting her frame one direction, then the other.

For her, there was better way to start off the day then with her usual run around the track, followed by a thermos full of her uncle's specialty roast.  Not even the stuff she got at work could top off Joseph's blend.

Autumn set her shades down next to her bag.  Too early to use them right now.  She jogged for a few seconds in place at the middle of the track, building up her momentum before pushing herself forward.  Her strides took her quickly along her circular path, her form following the curve around and up the track, her shoes digging in and pushing off with every stride.

The instant she felt the momentum of her own two legs accelerating her faster than most people could sprint, she grinned.  The feeling, the sensation of knowing that her own two legs could push her so far, so fast was all she needed to feel satisfied in the morning.

She found happiness that the highest part of her day was before most people had even woken up.

(Enter Dan Liu)

Dan normally didn't show up this early for school, but there was a track meet in two days and his times had been slagging lately. That wasn't okay. He needed to get his times up, especially in the 200 meter dash. Sure, his best event was the 100 meter, but 200 meter was still his thing. He owned that event, well, sometimes. Still better than a lot of people anyway.

So he was here early, wearing blue athletic shorts and a white t-shirt. He had brought a change of clothes of course. After all, going through the day covered in sweat wouldn't be a good idea. Besides, Christi, his girlfriend, wouldn't be happy at all if he stank when they hung out later.

He started out with his stretches, it would suck to pull something two days before the meet. Not to mention that without stretching his times probably wouldn't be as good. He saw there was a girl already running on the track. Autumn he thought. He didn't really get the appeal of naming kids after seasons, Summer, Autumn. Spring and Winter weren't as popular, but he just didn't get it.

He finished his stretches and got in place. Two hundred meters, ready to go.

((Jason Lin: pregame start))

Jason walked onto the track, feeling the porous surface yield slightly underneath his feet. Then he slapped Dan on the back.

"Hey, man." He grinned lopsidedly. "Nice to see another Asian doing a run today, eh?"

Squinting across the track, he was pretty sure he saw another girl running, as well. Had a nice tan and ponytail, but heck if he actually knew her name. Auburn or something like that. Saw her in track, even, but he wasn't doing real well on remembering people's names today. He'd remember in a few minutes, probably.

He reached up, adjusted his red headband. Yeah, it was early for a run, but he'd just felt like running when he'd woken up this morning. Plus, weather was nice for it. Little chilly, but no big deal.

Jason started his stretches.

"Race you if you want. Five bucks says we catch up to that girl before she makes it to this line we're standing on." He gauged the distance again, considered that he was still doing stretches. "Well, again."

---

Running happened, and he got in a pretty good workout after all.

He did lose that bet, though.
