Celebration

Veronica didn't look like herself anymore. In a good way.

Her usually messy hair was miraculously straight, and the tips of her split ends reached her nonexistent breasts. Her bangs were completely straight, and she had actually put on makeup. Veronica was donning a sleeveless, gold-colored dress with golden sequence on the abdomen and fanning downward in a triangle shape. Everything looked perfect.

That's what was funny about it.

Veronica laughed, and grinned madly at her reflection. She wasn't the type to doll up during Prom, but she looked like one of those girls anyway. Maybe Ruth wouldn't recognize her. Heck, would her classmates recognize her? If she could just hide her face, then nobody would recognize her. She could blend in, and simply be a background character in one of those stupid movies with Prom scenes. With a background character boyfriend.

Smiling at the thought of him, she decided to contact him through text message.

God, preparing for Prom is a bitch. Did it anyways, you probably won't recognize me. Waiting for the pickup.

R.J. was checking himself out in his bathroom mirror, making sure he looked spiffy for prom. He was wearing a tux that he hadn't worn since his great-grandfather's funeral. It still fitted right, but the sleeves looked longer for some reason. Ruth shrugged, deciding it wouldn't be a problem.

He sat himself on his bed, trying to sketch a man and a woman dancing under a disco. He was having some trouble getting the proportions right. Before he could finish, he got a text.

God, preparing for Prom is a bitch. Did it anyways, you probably won't recognize me. Waiting for the pickup.

R.J. couldn't help but giggle. Veronica didn't seem to be the type to go to prom, and he was surprised when she asked him if he wanted to go with her. He could only imagined how different she looked than usual. With a smile, he wrote back.

"Coming in a minute :)"

R.J. was stopped by his mother on the way out.

"You get everything you need?"
"Yeah."
"You gonna be safe?"
"Yeah."
"Love you."
"Love you too."
"...Ok, just don't do anything bad, blanco pinche cabron."
"MA!"

Although he knew his mom was kidding, R.J. knew the chances of him doing anything "bad" were slim. He hopped on to his motorcycle, and drove off. He had a pretty good idea of how the evening would go. They would sit at a table all night, and awkwardly watch everybody else dance in silence, and R.J. would be praying that Veronica didn't get into a fight. Then after all that, they would silently go home without a word.

R.J. rang the doorbell, and waited hesitantly for his date.

Fucking Mafia! I'm town, dammit!

The doorbell rang, distracting Veronica from her Mafia thread. It was probably Ruth, here to whisk her off to Prom on a motorcycle. Logging off the computer, she made her way downstairs.

Then a disaster happened.

Apparently Harris had ordered pizza, and had opened the door, expecting a pizza delivery boy. Instead, he saw Ruth, in a tuxedo.

"Um, excuse me ma'am, but why are you in a tux? Aren't you the pizza guy?" Harris tilted his head in puzzlement, not realizing that Ruth was his sister's date.

Craaaap.

R.J. was in a good mood. He didn't even care that this kid had called him "Ma'am". Deepening his voice, R.J. explained himself.

"Sorry bud, no pizza lady, or any lady, here. I'm just waiting for your sis-"

And there she was. Veronica was telling the truth when she said R.J. wouldn't recognize her. But it had to be her, because no one looks that damn good for the hell of it. R.J. was stunned. He always thought that Veronica was pretty, in a natural sort of way, but this was something.

He needed to do something. Make a movement, say anything, whatever it took to wipe off his dumbstruck stare.

"Hey."

"Close enough."

"Ditto." Veronica responded. Well, Ruth was in a good mood. The guy looked dumbstruck, and she liked it. Quietly shoving away Harris ("Hey! I'm you brother, damn-er, darn it! Show some respect, woman!), she smiled and kissed him on the cheek.

"Wow, you look rather smashing, Ruthie." Veronica cooed in a British accent and a voice she usually reserved for Feather, and more recently, Ruth. While 'Ruthie' ("Really? Ruthie? Wow, sis, you are VEEERRRRY creative! By the way, don't kiss. That's gross.") was still dumbstruck, she walked passed him and stood in the driveway, waiting for her date.

Christ, Ruth looked like a girl from behind. The looks, the name and the voice make Veronica think she's dating a girl. That's probably why she went for Ruth in the first place. Veronica never did remember the details and nature of her first encounter with Ruth, but she did know it was in high school, and she's liked him for some odd reason since. It was good that Ruth was a boy. After she started dating him, nobody ever brought up her sexuality. Ever.

Ruthie? Ah hell, still wasn't as bad as Baby Ruth. He could live with it.

The way she cooed and spoke with a fake British accent made R.J. feel fuzzy. He felt comfortable around her, not even blushing when she kissed him on the cheek. He could feel his head swooning and his heart thumping.

While Veronica was walking towards his motorcycle, R.J. was looking at her backside. The dress made her work what she had. He walked over to his ride, and grabbed the helmet he had.

"Um, I only really have one helmet, but I barely use it, so If you think you need it, you can wear it."

He held out the helmet with one hand and waited to see if Veronica wanted it, while he was busy fumbling in his pockets for keys.

"Son of a-, where are you, ya little bastards?!"

Nice offer. Veronica was kind of uncomfortable riding motorcycles, so this would probably calm her down and hold her out until they got to the school or wherever the hell the Prom was taking place at. She gingerly put on the helmet and tried to put it on correctly. I mean, it's a motorcycle helmet, right? What's so hard about putting it on?

Everything.

It felt somewhat loose on her head, and every adjustment she made just made it feel looser. After about a minute or two, she successfully put the motorcycle helmet on in a position that was comfortable.

"So, uh, hey, do you know where they hold Prom?" Veronica asked Ruth as the boy was fumbling for his keys. "I mean, it doesn't seem like they hold it at the Gym all the time." Sighing, she waited for Ruth to find his keys so they could get to Prom.

"C'mon, please don't disappear on- AH-HA, found you!"

"So, uh, hey, do you know where they hold Prom? I mean, it doesn't seem like they hold it at the Gym all the time."

R.J. actually did remember where prom was, thankfully. The boy usually got lost going to his math class, ending up being late more than once. He read where the prom was on a poster, and he saw the place enough times to know where it was.

"Oh, uh, yeah, it's at this, like, big event center place..."

Seeing Veronica struggling to put on the helmet almost made him laugh. Turning on his motorcycle, listening to it's purr and vibrations, R.J. hopped on the bike. Scooting forward on his seat, to the point where it was still comfortable, Ruth made room for Veronica to sit on. He looked back at her, to see if she had gotten on yet.

"You ready?"

"Er, I think I am." Veronica responded, knocking on the motorcycle helmet to check the durability, just in case. She hopped onto the motorcycle behind Ruth, and instantly wrapped her arms around him. In her defense, she was riding on a motorcycle as a passenger, and what else would she hold on to? Besides, they were a couple, an this was the most cliche thing in the books.

"Let's go." Veronica said over the purring of the motorcycle. She leaned forward and got a better grip on Ruth, holding on as if for dear life. She turned her head slightly, looking behind them as they began to back out.

The arms felt nice around R.J.'s body, although a bit too tight. He could tell that Veronica was a little bit nervous, so he decided to take it a bit slow at the departure, gradually speeding up as they got closer. Despite the inevitable awkwardness that would follow them getting to prom, R.J. had this feeling tonight was gonna be a good night.

...

And now that song would be stuck in his head the whole ride there. All with a straight face.

Well, at least Ruth was taking it slow. As they were leaving the block Veronica lived on, she turned back and watched her house fade away. Soon they were 3 blocks away. Them 4 blocks. Finally, they were close to the event center, where the Aurora High School Senior Prom would be held.

This was usually considered a 'magical' night by teenage girls, maybe the best night. For sure, this would probably be the most romantic night Ruth and Veronica would have. She was so prim-looking that her classmates might not recognize her. If this rang true, then Veronica could go an entire night without quarreling.

A night with Ruth, without fighting with someone else.

Magical indeed.
