Well, that was helpful.

It defied expectations, though. Not really? Were they friends in life but not the afterlife? The opposite? What was the connection here that was loose at best? Violet shot Desiree a quizzical look.

She herself almost asked the spirit to explain themselves, but decided to leave it up to Desiree.

These spirits were really starting to piss Desiree off. You always heard about them being cryptic and shit, but goddamn.

Desiree grumbled and racked her brain for what to ask next. Maybe an icebreaker would do to get this guy to open up a little bit.

"Can you tell us your name?" she blurted out, glancing back at Violet through her peripherals.

Desiree gritted her teeth, seething with a suppressed rage.

"Then... what the hell are you here for?" she demanded. She looked up and lock eyes with Violet. "Can we make it talk? Can you do some sort of... I don't know, witchy thing or whatever?"

That kinda stung.

"Uh, I mean, we can try to ask them different questions?" she said, wavering, "I think it just isn't comfortable answering what we've asked it, yet."

[Jilly]

Gee, thanks.

"Fine, uh... how about this, then." Desiree shifted in her seat again, repositioning her hands on the planchette to draw new energy or whatever.

"Where did you die?"

Hairs stood up on the back of Violet's neck, and she sat up a little in her seat.

"Um?"

Her eyes darted to the corners of the room frantically.

"Um? H'um?"

Something hot burned like rubber in her throat.

"Island?"

Island? What did that mean? And sent over sea and student from the last one, too... what was this weird feeling? This feeling that it was somehow familiar, somehow not a coincidental word salad?

Violet looked shaken. Desiree threw out a courtesy "you okay?" but didn't really wait for a response before asking the next question.

"When did you die?"

Heat turned to burning.

Ten years. What had she just read this morning? What ten years ago had she just been thinking of, just this earlier today? What? What what? Hello?

There is no pilot.

"Be careful about asking," Violet warned, "about causes of death. The spirits don't generally like being reminded, that they are not alive."

[Jilly]

2008? That's...

It was on the tip of Desiree's tongue now. Something nagging her in the back of her head. She knew it, knew it was something. Now she just had to find out what these spirits wanted with them. Maybe get them to pay for a new window, too, but that might be pushing her luck.

"Yeah, I know," she spoke over the last of Violet's words. Thanks, Miss Claire Voyant, now you knew what you were talking about.

...Sorry.

Moving on.

"So, uhm... why are you here?"

Didn't they have a senior trip scheduled soon?

A senior trip that Violet was going on?

"Careful," she stammered, "here, too. Never ask a spirit how you are going to die."

The words stumbled out of her mouth before she realized what she was saying.

"I mean, just, um, fuck, because I, um, forgot to mention it."
