Not Seeing Eye to I

(this thread takes place at the end of junior year, which is why it is a memory. Bear and I decided that jumping thread to thread as we changed settings would troll up a storm)

The falling sensation was interrupted by a jolt. Cassidy's thoughts raced as she struggled to remember where she was.

Physics. A glance up at the clock showed her the period was almost over.

Never her strongest subject, and not one she'd ever become passionate about. Her mind was elsewhere. She'd just read The Road by Cormic McCarthy, and was trying to envision herself in a post apocalyptic world.

She'd probably like the father in the book. Fighting to stay alive, but avoid others out of fear. But then again, she'd probably want to join a group. She could probably find a trustworthy group. Her role would be nurse or medic. But she had no training or knowledge in either. She'd be dead weight. But she was agile, maybe she could scout...

The loud beep snapped her back into the physical realm. She scrambled to scribble down the homework and pack her things up.

Oh well, it's first period. I'll wake up as the day goes on.

Her journal slid off her desk as she swung her jacket over herself.

She quickly picked it up, blushed, and smiled. Whoops.

Owen loathed physics class, the equations never really stayed in his mind for long and after the bell would ring they'd fade as quickly as he had read them. So he never bothered to memorise and instead chose to let his gaze wander around the class.

Most students were hardly noticeable, with their noses buried in their books. There were a few that caught his attention for one reason or another. Notably Cassidy Kant, she didn't seem immersed in her work like many others, she had a look on her face that he couldn't quite place. Whatever she was thinking of was probably more interesting that physics, because no one Owen knew liked physics.

Still, he couldn't help but stare, she just stood out for him. Maybe he was drawn in by her long blonde hair or her blue eyes, whatever it was he wasn't exactly sure but he acknowledged that she was very much attractive.

Hastily he ripped a page from his note book; he hoped the tearing noise was not too loud. He would quickly scrawl down a little something, poetic and romantic, just a note. Owen was confident in his own writing abilities, convinced that he had the skills to rival any other writer in his grade.

Most girls liked romantic drabble and the sensitive sort of stuff that he sometimes penned down, he supposed they found it exciting, their very own Romeo in their fairy tale. He wasn't the sort to really believe in that mush, but still, whatever got him laid in the end was fine by him. The bell would ring and he would hastily pack his things, there wasn't much so it was quick. He needed to get close to her; he always liked to surprise girls with hidden notes.

Reverse pickpocketing was always hard for him; he was used to taking and not giving. It was easier when they were distracted. Owen was lucky as she had dropped something, he didn't care what it was but he was glad that she did.

He would walk past nonchalantly; the note was pushed into her bag, she left it unattended as she bent to pick the fallen object.

He was pretty pleased with himself.

The note would remain unnoticed until Cassidy got home.

She tossed her bag onto her bed, only for it to slide off and dump it's contents on her floor.

She picked up the unfamiliar paper and read it. Oh what? What a surprise, I didn't know I had a suitor!

She flopped onto her bed with her knees making acute angles with her thighs as she read it. Her face was hot with flattery.

She rolled over to her back and held it over herself. Read it again. It almost sounded better the second time.

She sat up, legs folded to one side and read it a third time. How cute!

It made her feel a number of things. Pretty and desirable, but also enticed. If there was a way to get through to Cassidy, it was poetry.

We'll I guess that's really how all girls feel.

Owen wasn't somebody she'd really talked to before, but he was handsome. And this impression she now had of him was just continuously boosting her opinion of him.

Ah! I need to write back! She looked at the pile of homework that now spread over her floor, slightly overlapping each other like playing cards.

Homework can wait. She bargained. I won't be able to do anything productive until I take care of this.

She got some notebook paper of her own to write back. Maybe she should do it on something pink? No. Boys didn't like pink notes, and the precedent was lined paper. Let's not scare him away!

The rest of the night was spent imagining the next morning. Too excited and nervous to concentrate on anything else, Cassidy half heartily did her work and went to bed early. She didn't need Owen to catch her falling asleep in class!

On the next morning Owen arrived at school early, he was maybe a little anxious but otherwise about to set on his normal routine. The night before he slept soundly, not much thought put into the day ahead, now that he was at school the excitement had set in a little. He wondered exactly how she would respond to the note, after all not every girl liked that kind of stuff. Owen simply assumed that she was a sucker for poetry and he hoped that his guess was right.

He'd dismount his motorcycle and take off his helmet, taking time to fix his hair while looking at the mirrors.

Damn, Owen, you look good today.

He took time that morning to look good, even applying a little makeup to cover the faint scars on his face.

He'd dismount the motorcycle, subconsciously touching the contours of his machine with his fingers as he walked past it.

Soon the bell would ring and he would have to be in the class, he would see her then and know what she thought of the note.

Cassidy propped up when he entered. She was prepared. She had more make up on then usual, and her ponytail and bangs had been adjusted to perfection. She wore her newest long sleeved shirt, which she took the tags off that morning. It was a good thing she woke up early, because she had to keep starting over with her mascara.

She quickly reached into her physics folder, and pulled out her own note. She smiled at him, holding her note up by her face.

"Hey Owen!" She held up her own slip of paper. He'd walked over to her desk. "I'm not quite as suave and smooth as you, so I'm just going to have to hand deliver mine!" She blushed. Giving compliments is a lot harder when the boy's cute and interested.

She held out the note. Not really sure what else to do at this point. "I have lunch fifth period if you want to hang out, I'll be more awake then, I promise!" Her eyes broke contact with his to glance at the top of his head. "Wow your hair looks really good today!"

Owen smiled as he approached her; she was actually much more beautiful up close. She was cute now that he was talking to her, in a sort of enthusiastic way. He took the note, and he was glad that she liked his. Owen responded well to the flattery she offered, running his fingers through his sandy blonde hair quickly before speaking up.

"Lunch sounds good." He paused, it was his turn to offer a compliment, "and by the way, you look beautiful today."

Class was just about to start and he knew that he should be in his seat before the bell rang.

"Anyway, thanks for the note. I better get to my seat, class is about to start"

He'd open the note in class, glancing occasionally in her direction as he read it. He smiled and placed the folded note in his pocket before focusing on his work.

Cassidy plopped down in lunch. staring down at the table. Should she tell her friends about Owen? If he didn't show she'd be really embarrassed. No, he'll come. He said he would. She smiled and looked up at her friends. He expression probably gave away that she had something to share.

"This really cute guy started talking to me today. Well we kinda started talking yesterday. See he put this poem he wrote in my bag... Anyway! I told him he could drop by this period to hang out, so be excited with me!"

(at this point, friends of Cassidy may enter. Friends of friends are also acceptable, so long as the mutual friend is in.)

Since it was the end of the year, Penny Huang had long since given up trying to pay alert and attentive in class. Sure, she scribbled down the occasional note, but making an informed decision about whatever the hell was going on in Physics was well beyond her scope right about now. So much so she hadn't even been paying attention to what was going on between the two lovebirds now blossoming.

Which was why it came as a surprise that during a lunchtime where Penny was heavily invested in her strawberry yoghurt and homemade satay salad, Cass announced she'd met a guy. A cute guy, in fact. Written a poem for her and everything.

"Sure he's not gay?" Penny mentally chided, but ultimately stopped herself from saying because Cassidy was sure to take that the wrong way. Not that there was a right way to take it anyway.

"Sorry, a poem? He actually wrote you a poem?" Penny inquired letting the plastic disposable spoon she packed with her lunch stray inside her mouth to suck off the laps of strawberry. She removed it and continued, "So jealous. I mean, like, the best thing I've gotten is an erotic text in free-verse. At least..." Penny looked upwards, trying to remember what Kenny actually texted her before she deleted it and broke up with him, "...I think it was an erotic free-verse text, it might have just been a normal erotic text that I made a poem in my head."

Penny slid the empty yoghurt container to the side and smiled at Cass.

"Anyway, that's so totally awesome Cass. Who's the lucky guy?"

Jessica was so frustrated by chemistry right now. It had the one thing she hated most about a class: math. And then it was combined with having to memorize a bunch of elements, and each element had a bunch of information about it and ugh.

Lunch was so much better than that. She got to hang with her friends, even if they were taking physics while she was taking chem. Not that physics would be better, she had heard that had a whole lot more math. Maybe she would see if there was another science class for senior year, take some life science, was there a horticulture one? A friend from outside of school said they took it at their school, so maybe Aurora offered it too. She'd check later.

She took a seat with Penny and Cassidy. Today wasn't a bad day for lunch actually, it being one of the rare days where they had pizza, and it wasn't even burned. Cassidy was already talking about some cute guy who wrote her a poem. "Wait really? Awesome!"

Then Penny was talking about erotic free verse, eroti-oh. Jessica wasn't big on sex stuff. She wanted to look nice, and have her boyfriend think she looked nice, but her body shouldn't be the focus or anything.

Cassidy beamed. Sure, lunch had hardly started, and not everybody had even arrived, but she couldn't contain herself.

Penny was jealous and Jessica was excited for her. She cringed a little bit at the thought of erotic text messages, and made a mental note to ask Penny about Kenny. I wonder if Jessica likes anybody in particular. I should ask Owen if he's got a friend... WAIT no. Maybe go on a first date before a double date. Yeah. "Oh! She realized it was her turn to say words.

"Yes, a poem. And he said he'd drop by!" Oh God please drop by. "Ahh he's a cutie. Rides a motorcycle too."

Alright now I'm just bragging. But it's not like I get to do this often!

"So... ya know. Don't embarrass me!" She paused. "And definitely stop me if I'm embarrassing myself!"

She laugh-sighed to herself. She was nervous. She was even tapping her fingers on the cheap fold up table. The pinky fell before the ring finger before the middle before the index. Over and over. Her nails clicked everytime they made contact with the fake wood.

She was done with her rant. Now she just had to wait until Owen came so she could get her friends' approval. There was something she was meaning to do... Homework? No, she'd sloppily done that all last night. Her eyes darted between her friends as she thought.

Oh! Penny's turn for stories!

"What ever happened with Kenny?"

Owen approached Cassidy's table with his lunch in hand. For a moment he stopped, she hadn't told him that she would be with other people.

Eugh, this is not what I had in mind. I don't know them, perhaps I should turn around and...

Now he was having second thoughts, he wasn't very keen on socialising with her friends. It was more about him than them; he just didn't like talking to people. He wasn't shy; he simply preferred not to be very social. Even though he wanted to leave he had little choice as he told her he would meet her. It simply wouldn't look good and he knew that it might leave a bad impression.

He approached the table and sat down as close as he could to Cassidy, ignoring everyone else he went to greet her.

"Hey, Cassidy."

He didn't care for whatever they were talking about; he just wanted to do get this done with. He'd fake polite conversation if he had to, but he was almost certain he wasn't about to make any friends.

Penny's eyes widened at the question, and she had to quickly look around to make sure no family friends heard. Dammit dammit dammit, if anybody had heard Cassidy ask about Kenny again, it would be the fiasco from sophomore year with that nice junior boy all over again. Despite how much she didn't want to see Ken, she did not wish to inadvertently sic 100 pounds of Jin Huang, Korean Tiger Mom, onto him just as he was about to graduate.

"Ssh, Cass!" Penny started, harshly lowering her voice, "Ix-nay on the En-Kay! I told you this ages ago! We broke up and that's that! Do you want to know more, cause I think my mother knows how to brew truth-telling tea."

She wasn't sure whether Cass got it, since Mrs Huang was not a parent Penny paraded around shamelessly in front of her peers. But Cass did not need to worry about such a thing, since Penny was momentarily distracted by someone who seemed to be talking to Cassidy.

Oh, she knew this kid. At least she'd heard of him. She'd heard rumours about one rich kid who was repeatedly caught stealing at the mall, some guy who obsessed over his motorbike, but she hadn't put the two together. She never really imagined someone like Owen as "cute". More like "snobbish". But if this was what Cassidy wanted, far be it from Penny to say anything.

Penny looked up at the newcomer and let off a showy grin.

"Oh, hey there."

Well okay, no talking about Kenny. Jessica thought she had heard a little about it, but not enough to really know. That was fine with her, she didn't need to know too much. Being obsessed with other people's relationships was weird anyway, well unless you were thinking about them yourself. And then you definitely waited until they were broken up and didn't have a huge grudge. Ugh.

And then Owen showed up. Well he's not bad, but he's not great, but as long as Cassidy likes him... Yeah, well motorcycles were dangerous, right? Sure, they looked cool, and kinda hot. But was it really worth getting broken bones over?

She didn't think so, but then again maybe Cassidy wouldn't be willing to ride it. Well, it wasn't really any of Jessica's business anyway, but still. Like, they were friends so she had the right to be a bit concerned, right? Yeah.

(Happy Valentine's Day!)

"Ssh, Cass!"" Cassidy was startled by the sudden change of attitude.

"Ix-nay on the En-Kay! I told you this ages ago! We broke up and that's that! Do you want to know more, cause I think my mother knows how to brew truth-telling tea."

Things had gone from "sorry I asked" to "Ahh! what is she even saying."

I was only trying to let somebody else share...

Her mind went into overdrive looking for the right words to apologize and end the awkward moment.

"Hey, Cassidy"

Thank God! She turned to Owen.

Hearing his only somewhat familiar voice, it suddenly hit her that this was their first conversation beyond "you look good today" or "thanks for the note." She was surprised she had become smitten with him so quickly despite all this. What was it that got me so hooked... oh. Poetry. She blushed a bit upon remembering finding it.

Oh geez, my turn to say words.

"Hi Owen! This Penny, and this is Jessica!" She gestured to each. "We all cheer together!"

Oh geez this is sounding lame.

She turned back to the girls. "And this is Owen!" He looked slightly uncomfortable. I guess that's to be expected, meeting my friends already. It's like the Spice Girls' song. 'If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends.' Well, lover jumped the gun a bit. But still fitting.

She'd let them exchange greetings and then talk to him about the weekend.

Owen hid his annoyance behind a fake smile. He felt as though Cassidy was pushing him into a conversation he really didn't want to be a part of. Still, he couldn't say that he didn't see it coming.

Okay, a few minutes of pointless conversation won't kill you. You just need to look good in front of Cassidy, that's all. It's not like you're jumping through hoops of fire. Not that you'd jump through hoops, you have your limits and they would have been drawn long before that. Oh god, you're taking too long to say anything. Just say something nice.

Owen pulled himself out of his own thoughts; he'd taken enough time to respond.

"It's a pleasure to meet you two." It was a lie and a simple one at that. He didn't particularly enjoy their company. He had nothing against them, but the fact that they were present bothered him. He came for Cassidy. He wasn't looking to establish friendships with anyone else, including her two friends whose names escaped him.

Fuck, what were they called again?

He had already forgotten both their names, and he already knew that it might make the conversation awkward in the future. The fact that Owen had forgotten their names probably had something to do with the fact that he wasn't paying much attention to them in the first place.

He hoped that Cassidy's friends would at least be capable of carrying an interesting conversation. Part of him doubted that he would be interested in the conversations that a group of cheerleaders had to offer, but he hoped that they might surprise him.
