Stay Frosty

The center of town is picturesque, flower beds surrounding a large fountain. Large amounts of graffiti mark the fountain's edge, most of it pertaining towards the fact that the centerpiece of the fountain is a carved naked woman with arms outstretched. A well-traveled road leads down to the docks, and a second road leads towards the felled forest. This area also includes the houses closest to the center.

((Where Do You Go From Here? --> Bounce))

This was beyond bad. Beyond awful. How the hell had she managed to screw things up this much? Meeting Aaron's group had been a boost, even if she hadn't been sure what to think of him, but dammit it'd delayed Bounce. Too long. And that, frankly, was her own damn fault. How much more stupid could she get? After all the versions of SOTF she'd watched, all the groups she'd tracked, Bounce STILL hadn't considered that splitting up would be a bad idea. How often had she seen that? Groups not sticking closely enough together, travelling too quickly, not keeping their stragglers alongside them.

Not often something as crowningly moronic as going separate ways through a sizeable town, though. Wasn't she supposed to be the guru here? Bounce's strength, her only edge was her knowledge, and yet she was still making the dumb mistakes. Splitting up had been the first, not heading out to meet the rendezvous early had been the next. And now... she was in the dead centre of the place Bounce rated as the most dangerous on the island. Alone.

Nice going, Yelizaveta. Nice going.

Bounce had spent much of the previous night stumbling around in the dark, caught up in the panicked hope (or delusion) that if she ran around enough, she'd run into Victoria eventually. Never mind she'd told her to move on if she didn't show up for the meeting, or that night-time adventures were a good way to run afoul of enterprising players. After realising that she was going to collapse from a combination of exhaustion and nervous breakdown, Bounce had sheltered for the night in one of the abandoned houses, bunking down in the bottom of a wardrobe to snatch a couple of fitful, uncomfortable hours sleep.

After the announcement, Bounce had stayed holed up inside for a little while longer, trying to reason through her options and not making a very good job of it. She probably spent more of the time attempting to hold herself together. That had gone... okay. Bounce had cried for a bit, but quietly, and since she hadn't had a full on panic attack, she really had to count it as a success. A small one, but still a success. She'd been about to leave when the next announcement had arrived.

Unexpected, and it most definitely meant that something was awry. Danya didn't just break his schedule for fun. Bounce knew that very well. Had there been some kind of fault, like last time around? Maybe somebody had-

Oh yes. Yes they had.

Somebody - Liz Polanski, had done it. They'd figured out how to disable the collar. That hadn't been stated explicitly, but really, what else could it have been? Nothing else would warrant an announcement. Regular interference was a detonated collar. Which meant... which meant Polanski had somehow managed to stop them from blowing her up. There had been a tremor of hope, which had been immediately suppressed by a feeling of utter uselessness.

Three versions, Bounce had watched. Every tactic, every attempt. And she still couldn't come up with the first idea how to get out of there. Yet somebody else had. She'd been so resigned to thinking that it was impossible that she hadn't even considered-

Well, didn't that just make her a big ball of useless?

Bounce had meandered around town for a little while longer, more or less aimlessly, the hopes of finding Victoria completely vague and tenuous at best. It was the wandering of a girl who simply put, had no damn idea what to do or where to go. She hadn't met anybody... yet, but it seemed to be inevitable. Somehow, she'd managed to put herself in an even worse position than that she'd started it. At least then, she'd had an ally.

Abruptly, the street gave way to an open area, some kind of park. At the centre of it was an elaborate fountain. Bounce blinked, then winced. Nice going, Lizzie. Not only was she still in the town, she'd somehow managed to make her way into the direct middle of it. If nothing else, she should've tried to head on out of there. Instead she'd wound up... here.

Bounce cast about for a short while, keeping an eye out for threats (as if seeing them coming would do her any good). Then she spotted them. Bodies. She stopped and stared at the pair of corpses by the fountain, one massive, one diminutive. The first she'd seen. Bounce trembled, just a little, not really noticable unless somebody were right next to her... but she didn't stop. Couldn't make herself.

In fact, it barely registered that her collar let out a shrill beep, up until the announcement started up all over again. Bounce tore her eyes away from the bodies to look around wildly, her eyes unfocused. Somebody was causing some serious trouble, that much was clear. And playing roulette with everyone at the same time. Somehow, Bounce couldn't quite bring herself to care.

Fuck. Fuck. You're losing your grip Lizzie! Calm down. Seriously, calm down RIGHT now.

Bounce crouched down on the ground by the fountain, held her head with both hands, pushing hard at the sides of her skull.

Muttered to herself. "Hold it together. Hold it together... come on, hold it together..."

((Colin Falcone continued from Youth and Beauty Brigade.))

They had made some incredible time. Colin, Jacob, and Tim had trekked pretty much clear across the island in a day's time, and his plotted route had been a major success, simply for the fact that it was as uneventful as it was... Well, as uneventful as it could be.

There had been a second announcement about halfway to their destination, one that had made the trio momentarily stop in fright. Liz Polanski had done something to her collar, and it was Mr. Kwong who was reading the announcement. He was still alive, against any odds. Not for long it seemed though thanks to the pre-written announcement.

He let out a small sigh. He'd never heard Daisuke's name before, but the fact that collars were being randomly blown was not good. His, or worse, Tim's or Jacob's could be next. They had to hurry. To what though? The faster they moved, the faster they died. They were all going to die. At least two of them at the absolute best case scenario. How could the winner LIVE with that?

He knew he couldn't. Once all was said and done, if his feet ever touched American soil again, he would never be able to live with the guilt of his actions.

Oh the amount of therapy that would require.

He shook his head, and made a motion for the group to continue. They had to keep moving. There was a solid goal in sight, and they had to keep towards it. At least to help keep them sane. If they sat there and dwelled on their situation, it would make them lose it completely, and he knew it.

And so off they were again, with barely a second thought for Liz. The town grew bigger and bigger on the horizon; and by setting themselves on the largest road into the town, they were greeted with the sight of a water fountain.

And then, there was a loud, unmistakable beep. His eyes shot wide as his hand flashed to his collar, expecting his life to end at that very moment. But no other beep ever came; the collar lay dormant yet again. A silent killer waiting to strike, just making it's presence known once more.

He sat, and waited, nestled between the buildings which led to the plaza in the center of the town. Listening for another beep. What greeted his ears however was Danya's voice yet again. The PA system. Something had to be serious if there were this many announcements.

"Evening children... my aren't we having a busy day? It seems that one of your number has no regard for the rest of you. Gee, I tried to warn you about that Liz Polanski, but she just won't stop playing roulette with your lives. Much as it pains me to say this... somebody came up with the unlucky number. G004. Lucy Ashmore. ... ... now where's that button? Oh yes, there it is. ... Eliminated."

Shit. Shitshitshitshit.

Someone was out there, fighting back, and all Colin could do was sit and fear for his life as two more names were rattled off. And then that same threat yet again, to kill their teacher. Not that anyone would probably ever see him again. The way this game was going... Mr. Kwong would probably not live either way. He shook his head, breathing a sigh of soft relief as the PA clicked off again. Maybe that was what the beep had been earlier? He closed his eyes, and thought. What could he do? He was a coward, she was brave. He took another deep breath, and sat, his eye falling to a small girl milling about near the fountain. He couldn't dwell on it, on anything. They were all going to die on this God forsaken island either way. Why fear?

Beacuse it is human nature to fear the unknown.

((Alice Blake continued from Civilization at any Price))

It was a rough night, to say the least. After Vic had dragged her ass to safety, it had been a little back and forth while Vic shuttled the bags from the street to house they'd chosen to bunk down in. Alice had spaced out on the pain killers she'd be given while Vic risked her life recovering supplies. Not surprisingly, she felt quite guilty about that later. But, of course, not at the time. Instead she was a little preoccupied with how awesome she felt. The pain killers made her feel better then she had felt in a good while. It was...a welcome change of pace. A nice enough change that she was sorely tempted to ask for more later in the evening.

Luckily, her back wasn't nearly as bad when they wore off. It might have something to do with the fact she had barely moved after they had settled in. After she'd grabbed the bags from the street, things were almost on an even keel. Of course, Vic had recovered her jacket as well. Could hardly leave that behind, right? She even found Alice a new shirt to replace the bloody and torn one she was presently wearing. It was a black number, a simple t-shirt that was a few sizes too small for her. After that was settled, Vic led her to a corner room on the second floor of a somewhat ramshackle building and eased her onto the bed in the corner. It was hardly the Hilton, but the surroundings were greatly improved by Vic's presence.

While Alice was dozing upstairs, her better half kept watch for Bounce, should things not end up fucked for once. Alice was just coming around when her unexpected guardian came back upstairs. Alice didn't need to ask whether there was any luck finding her friend. One look at Vic's face told her that she was SOL. But that really should have been expected, and Alice found herself cursing Murphy and his damn laws. It put a sour spin on the evening before anything else could happen to screw things up even more. She tried not think about what kept Bounce from meeting up, just like she tried to keep herself from thinking about every horrible thing that might have happened.

Things did tend to level out from there. They talked, Alice exchanging war stories with Vic while her personal medic checked on her injuries. Eventually, they both fell asleep in each others arms. Alice would regret that later, too. It was reckless and dangerous, and it could have gotten them both killed if someone stumbled onto them. They had gotten lucky, no question.

Once light did start to filter in through the window, Alice did feel a measure of relief. Safety from the night and all the monsters it hid. That and another chance to find Bounce. Vic was less optimistic about finding her, but there was no way that Alice would give up if she was supposed to still be in the area. Outside Vic, Bounce was the only friend she had. Like Hell would she give up if there was a chance to find her.

So, Vic checked up on her wounds, changing the bandages and all that, and they made plans to set out. Alice felt better. Not, you know, good as new, but she could walk without aid, albeit stiffly and not without some pain. As much as she liked the idea of being Vic's Knight in Shining Armor, defending her from all that is evil and wrong, that seemed more like wishful thinking now. Her mobility was shot, and she could barely walk on her own. It would have been easier to lean on Vic, but Alice was desperate to project some sense of normalcy, if only to give Vic peace of mind. So, she did her best to hide the occasional grimace of pain, or the sharp intake of breath after a step taken too quickly.

Even though Vic was the one with the gun, Alice still picked the direction. She decided to start at the center of town and work her way around, circling until they found Bounce or ran out of town. As good a plan as any other, right?

Alice lead the way with Vic following a few steps behind. It wasn't long before the reached the clearing and the fountain erected in the center. Alice stopped, waited, listened. Her collar beeped, but that only registered after the fact that there was someone kneeling by the fountain. The solitary beep was momentarily important, but when nothing followed, she decided that it wasn't important. Glancing over her shoulder, she pointed over to the statue. "One person, I think. Careful."

All the same, Alice started forward, ever wary, already expecting this to be some sort of trap. The sudden voice from the speakers made her jump, then freeze. Her attention was still focused on the figure kneeling by the fountain, and she felt a faint stirring of hope. Short hair, small frame, slight figure as best she could tell. If it wasn't her friend, it was a damn near mirror image. "Bounce?" Alice called out as she moved closer, her tone hopeful. She closed the distance and felt a huge weight shift from her shoulders. The taller girl greeted her best friend in much the same way that she greeted Vic, minus the deep and passionate kiss. Alice threw her arms around the Russian girl. Speaking through a broad smile, Alice muttered, "I'm so happy to see you again Bounce."

((Jacob Charles continues from Youth and Beauty Brigade))

See, there was two things on Jacobs mind the moment the group of three heard the second announcement for the day.

1.

Holy....Kwong's alive?

And 2.

What the fuck has Liz Polanski done now?

In all of Jacob's time at Bayview, he'd never given a second thought to the fact that someone in his class might be someone peculiar. No, he'd been with these guys for such a long time, and even now, when death was becoming second nature, he'd just focused upon himself and his own problems. Never thought about the little weird kids, like Polanski, who, by the sound of it, seemed to be so weird or some shit like that that Danya wanted her throat. Tampering with the collars? What the hell did that mean? Did she get it off? What did that mean now? It meant that she could just go into places that other people couldn't, and that was that. She still didn't have any way off the island if she really had her collar off or something.

What the hell, Jacob didn't know this stuff, he was just guessing.

The only thing that slightly worried him at first was the fact that he now had a 1-200, and getting higher by the minute, chance of loosing his head if Polanski wanted to fuck around with the big guy, he knew that. When Kwong's voice announced the death, he was only slightly worried. Not because he had arrogance about the fact that the chance of him being 'sploded was so little, but about the fact that he'd given up caring whether he lived or died. That caring died with the girl he loved.

So he'd tagged along silently with Colin and Tim, not telling them squat. By the third announcement of the day, they knew him no better than when he joined them a few days ago.

So they made their way back to the town. Fucking hell, all the houses looked the same three days later, and Jacob didn't even try to stop the group so he could look for his bag, it'd take forever going through them all. As they walked, Jacob ignoring the urge to try and find both Paige and his bag again, he saw that they were getting closer to the right centre of the town. Big fountain, probably lots of people there as well. He didn't know if it was a good a place as any to get their bearings right, but then again, that was why Jacob wasn't their leader.

Colin stopped them from going any further towards the figure (or was it figures?) already there, and they stopped, nestled between two of the closest buildings, and-holycrapdidmycollarjustbeep?

Not that Jacob was worried or anything. A surprise, nothing else.

Looking around at Colin, he saw the same panic on his face as well. It wasn't at Jacob's, it was at his own. He didn't know if Tim had the same thing going for him, but more than likely, since it happened to both of them. What the hell? This place wasn't a danger place, now was it? No, he'd heard the announcements with his own ears.

Course, what else he heard with his own ears just got a little update when the announcements came on again.

Kwong was gone, Danya was back. Liz was doing more shit, and more collars were being blown. As the sadist began to read off more names, he didn't look at his newfound friends. He sat himself on the ground where they stood, sat, etc, head hung between his knees again. No point showing how much he really didn't care at this point whether or not his head shot off like a firecracker.

That didn't happen; only three names, none of them his.

As soon as the PA crackled off, he lifted his head and looked again towards the fountain. Yep, he was right, it was definitely 'figures', since there was more than one of them. He turned his head towards Colin and spoke up for really the first time since the beach.

"There's people over there, right? I dunno any of 'em that well, so do we wanna go see if they're friendly or something?"

((Tim Q. continued from Youth and Beauty Brigade))

Tim's feet ached and a slight headache was pounding away behind his skull. He followed behind Colin and Jacob, trying to keep his complaints to a mere minimal, but it was hard. He wanted to whine and complain about how thirty and tired he was. He wanted to stop, sleep, rest his feet. But, alas, he kept his mouth shut. Colin and himself had stayed at that beach for a fair enough time. That was all the rest that he would allow himself to have. He needed to move now, and complaints were not going to cut it.

As the trio walked, the group was surprised to hear an announcement, one that was inappropriately timed in respects to the other daily announcements. This announcement didn't list deaths or kills, but announced the doings of some chick named Liz Polanski. The name sounded familiar, but Tim had never socialized with the gal. Was she trying to escape? Seriously? She had guts, that was for sure. Tim doubted he ever had the guts to escape -- nor the smarts.

The second half of the announcement was illustrated by none other than the Mr. Kwong. Tim raised his eyebrows in surprise, looking over at his two friends. A teacher that wasn't dead yet? This sparked a tiny bit of hope in his being, a bit of hope that seemed to say, "A living teacher? Maybe he can save us!" But his announcement was just as grim. And someone's collar got detonated as a result of Liz's doings.

Shit. Tim felt his jaw drop, and before he could pick it up off the floor, his thoughts began to race. That poor kid! Dead over some girl's doings. How selfish! But.. Liz couldn't have known that. She wouldn't have tried to escape if she had known someone would die, would she? It wasn't her fault. It was that Mr. Danya's.. Right? Tim shook his head. He wasn't sure whose fault it was, but he couldn't help but feel pity for that Daisuke boy. How unfortunate. "What if it was us...?" Tim pondered quietly, barely aware that he had spoken the words. He was shaking slightly, his teeth chattering as if the area around him had gone cold.

He didn't want to die because of Liz. He didn't care if she was going to escape, he didn't want to die! He didn't want his life in the hands of some girl!

The situation with Liz was, once again, something out of his control. Tim hated this. He was always the kind of guy that liked to have things in control. He was orderly. His grades were under control, his life was [usually] under control, his future was under control. Being placed on an island and forced to kill against your will? Not under control. This really irked Tim. Everything was beyond his reach, and it took everything inside of him not to freak out and use that gun that he kept in the waistband of his jeans.

He could kill like all the others. He could attempt to force a rugged path back home. He could do it if he wanted to. Did he want to? Well, not really. He doubted he had the guts. Besides, if someone started begging or crying or screaming.. It was over. Those things just melted his heart. Hell, Tim could barely watch horror movies or, embarrassingly, chick flicks (!) without sobbing.

Tim realized that his feet were moving. He quickened his stride in order to keep up with Colin. As the trio walked on and a water fountain came into view (how pretty, Tim remembered thinking), he was jarred from his thoughts by a loud beep. Touching his collar, he looked over at his friends in panic. Had they entered a danger zone?! But there were no more beeps and no one else spontaneously died, so Tim calmed down a little.

The announcements cracked to life. Three more people were eliminated. Tim's heart dropped. He was sure that he would be next. Hand flew up to collar, eyes dart about, heart beat wildly... More silence. No more deaths. He let out his held breath in a huff and stared at Colin, his eyes a little darty and paranoid. "Colin, I don't know how much more of that I can take," he admitted, managing a very small, cheesy smile.

"I'm so happy to see you again Bounce."

Tim looked over and realized that, not too far away from the trio, a girl had approached another girl near the fountain. "Hey, there are people over there," Tim stated, looking over at the girls. They didn't appear to be too intimidating, in fact, he recognized both of them from classes he had taken in the past.

He looked over at Jacob and nodded at his question. "I think it sounds like a good idea. Keeping over here by ourselves might look suspicious." Tim paused and sneaked another glance at the two girls. "What do you think, Col?"

It was like something out of a damn movie.

It was like something out of one of those TV dramas.

It was like something out of... well, Survival Of The Fittest.

But frankly, for all that chance reunions always seemed unlikely, contrived, Bounce couldn't give a flying fuck what the odds were. A sense of overwhelming, crushing relief hit her like a freight train, because dammit, this was Alice, this was her only real friend and the only person that Bounce knew, absolutely knew that she could trust. Victoria was sort've okay by proxy of being Alice's girlfriend, but from a personal, selfish perspective, Alice was the only person on the entire island that Bounce could be 100% solid guarantee sure of.

The anxiety and nervousness were blown away in an instant. Not destroyed or shattered, but pushed back to the furthest corners of Bounce's mind, back from the surface for the time being. She stopped trembling the second that familiar voice called out to her. Amazing, really, that anything of that sort could be so calming, but what the hell ever, Bounce wasn't about to complain. Anything that could stop her from coming apart at the seams was a-okay in her book.

Naturally, at that very instant, the little voice that wouldn't shut up was chattering away in her head. It wasn't a split personality, or a touch of schizophrenia. It was just knowledge. Plain knowledge. The result of having watched and rewatched, analysed and dissected, critiqued... of having done all these things to every series of SOTF to date. And this persistent little voice was saying something. Well, no. Reading something.

Funny thing I've noticed, actually. For how many people there are on the island, they always seem to manage to find their friends easily, don't they? Well, maybe it's just lucky coincidence, maybe the whole thing's fake, or maybe it's just a quirk of how the place works. You know, they find people because they're looking for them, and looking hard. Or maybe we just notice the ones that DO find their buddies, and forget to take into account all the ones that spend the entire time searching and never actually manage to succeed.

Anyway, quite a lot, I've noticed, this happens, and then what? Everything goes to shit is what. The reunion is broken up by an enterprising player, tragedy, people get killed just as they find who they're looking for, etc, etc. That seems to happen a hell of a lot too, even asides from when you get the archetypal devoted pair of travellers and/or lovers. See, I think it happens not because of some contrived set up by the 'directors (I think it's real, FYI), but because of how people react in that situation. They just found their friend or girlfriend or whatever, so what's their natural reaction? They switch off is what. Their suspicion goes, their alertness goes because let's be honest, they're just plain happy to see whoever they're meeting.

And in the crucial time where it's all relief and happiness? Well, that's when they present an ideal target.

Bounce stiffened in Alice's arms... then almost tore herself clean out of the embrace, the paranoia returning like a sledgehammer. Never drop your guard, NEVER drop your guard! As Bounce's eyes raked the area, panic gripping her... they alighted upon ...well it didn't matter who upon, somebody was there, and the only damn advantage that Bounce had was telling her that history indicated that their intentions were bad.

"Get down! Get down right now!" Bounce hissed, a fleeting thought crossing her mind that as greetings went, there were better, then hit the deck alongside the fountain.

It fucking hurt. Goddamn paving.

Bounce's hand was scrambling, scrambling, stuck behind her own back, delving into her pack. She'd seen something before, when she'd checked her bag out, something near the unwieldy can of gasoline. It'd tired her the fuck out for all this time, but damn if Bounce as going to throw away her only weapon, especially when it was actually useful. Especially when Bounce had - come on where was is - when Bounce had...

Her fingers closed on a small, metallic object. A cuboid of steel.

Yes.

A lighter.

((BARELY skirting inactivity here. I don't really have a lot to work with though.))

From his (frankly, not very good) position on the ground, Jacob saw the girls, but almost instantly they hit the pavement. What was going on over there? Did someone try to shoot at them? Nah, they would have heard that. Were they trying to hide from someone? But there was nobody there, who could they wanna hide from?

...Oh right, them three. Had to be them.

Jacob turned back to Tim and Colin, not sure what to make of the situation.

"What're they doing over there? They tryna hide from someone or something? Like...us?"

((Victoria Logan continued from Civilization at any Price))

Things were looking up for Vic. In one fell swoop, two of her three primary goals on the island were met. Find a real weapon and find Alice. Goal three was more of an endurance sort of goal, and it was no doubt a goal shared by the rest of the student body. Stay alive. Easier said then done, right?

But that was before she got a gun. The gun made everything easier. Even if the gun was issued to Alice, Alice gave it to her since she wasn't in any condition to use it. Vic might say it was her insurance policy if she actually expected Alice to turn on her. Maybe it could still be an insurance policy in the event that was she and Alice were...separated or otherwise split up.

That was a fairly innocuous way of saying Vic would at least have something if Alice was killed. Which, by the way, was seeming more and more plausible. Hell, Alice had already been shot and beaten up, and both times it was largely her fault. Not to sound ungrateful or anything, but Vic had thought about it and everything would have gone much smoother if Alice had just given up her gun. She wouldn't have been shot, they would have lost the gun, but no one would have been shot. A pretty small price to pay for not having an injury that would slow you down later. But that was Alice. Proud to the point of pigheadedness sometimes.

Which led to the question of how the hell was Alice still moving faster then she was? Sure, Vic had taken an extra second or two to grab the bags, but Alice was tearing off down the street like she was on a mission. Not that she wasn't, though. Couldn't leave Bounce behind, oh no. If it was up to Vic, they would have left her behind. To be honest, she was still sore about making them split up. And through a chain of events that only made sense to Vic, she got Alice shot. That didn't mean she complained about the decision to Alice. Maybe mentioned they should move on, but fast chance of that. When Alice got something in her head...

As the road ended and opened up on a clearing dominated by a large and, in her opinion, ostentatious fountain. Alice was way ahead of her, making a beeline toward a small figure crouched down by the statue. Well, so much for just the two of them. It seemed Alice had sniffed out the little Russian girl. Vic set the bags down at her feet, leaning against the last building before the clearing. She'd let the two get reacquainted before joining them, she decided. Vic rolled her already sore shoulder, the one both bags had been resting on, relishing the sound Alices' leather jacket made as it moved.

Vic had almost decided that she was done with her Fonzy impression when Bounce threw Alice to the ground. her first wild thought was that Bounce has gone crazy. Even when she saw the three figures on the opposite end of the opening, she still kicked that idea around. Vic watched the group across from her pressing against the wall to minimize her profile as she did. They didn't look overtly hostile, but that didn't stop her hand from resting on the butt of the revolver tucked in her belt. Whatever they were up to, it would be a fine chance to play guardian angle. If they were friendly, well, alright. If they weren't, she'd have the drop on them. Easy. All she had to do was wait and see.

((Sorry. With my away time I didn't realize how long it had been. Won't happen again.))

Figuratively, Colin's ears perked up when he heard Tim spoke. Hell, other than the voice coming from over near the fountain (and honestly, he couldn't even understand those), you could hear a pin drop out here. The group he had been traveling with were completely silent. And his and Jacob's thought process forced a smile onto his face. Their ability to assume the best in people was refreshing. They did seem friendly enough anyways. The short one... He remembered someone calling her Bounce back in school. That's one of those odd nicknames you remember. He hadn't heard anything like that on the announcements, and he was sure that Danya would be pretty much unable to resist making some sore of macabre, grotesque pun out of that.

His voice was but a whisper. Even though he wanted to make contact, there was this odd habit he had developed of trying to keep himself hidden from view of everyone else. First his plan to run through the forests to get here, and now this. "Yeah. We probably should. Besides, I don't think I've heard a thing about the short one on the announcements. I don't know about the other on- two though." A third girl was just a dot off in the distance, but he could still see her slowly approaching.

And then Bounce looked right at the trio. And in a wildly unprovoked movement, she grabbed Alice and threw her to the ground, doing so herself. The other girl had gotten significantly closer in the time it took Victoria to get closer, and she was looking right at them too. There was something in Bounce's hand... He couldn't make out for the life of him what it was though. Definitely not a gun. Okay then.

The sneakiness probably wasn't making this look any better either. Now or never... He quickly stood, taking a step out into the open, his hands open and raised to indicate that he wasn't armed.

"Relax, it's alright! We aren't playing. We're just trying to survive this insufferable place. You're... Bounce, right? I'm Colin." He indicated his alli- his friends with his head, making a point to keep his hands in sight at all times. "We're just looking for Jacob's bag. And other friendly faces."

When a person makes an effort to display a certain emotion, no matter if it's a legitimate emotion or not, it comes off looking fake as heck. Colin was doing everything he could to make sure that his face radiated warmth and friendship, yet the way it contorted, it looked more like a strange form of nervousness. On a level, the nervousness was legitimate. He was worried in the back of his mind that one of the three would recognize him from day one, and immediately start with a violent greeting.

Nooot quite the greeting she was expecting. Maybe returning the hug, possibly tearful declarations of how happy she was that they had found each other...something other then getting thrown to the ground amidst hushed but frantic warnings. Alice hadn't really gotten a good look before, so maybe ducking out of sight was justified. Bounce had a very good head on her shoulders, so if she thought this was wise, Alice wouldn't argue. She knew this game better then anyone else. That didn't mean she wouldn't prefer a gentler landing.

In such a rush was she, Bounce didn't bother with where they landed, as long as it was out of sight. Alice's shoulder hit the ground first, followed quickly by the rest of her body and Bounce after that. The most noticeable result of the impact, beside the scraping of the gravel and concrete against her cheek, was the preexisting injury on her back reminding Alice that, 'Hey, I'm still here'. Those stabbing pains that she'd felt every time she moved had died down over the night but she had a feeling that was going to change.

While Bounce rifled pawed through her bag, Alice let loose a stream of curses that would make a sailor blush. Between the grimaces, Alice saw Bounce remove a lighter from her bag. While she was taking a gander, Alice's eyes also lit upon the bright red of a gas can. Didn't take Sherlock Holmes to connect the dots. It also didn't take a detective to realize that such a ploy was, at best, unlikely to work.

Still lying in the prone position Bounce had thrown her in, Alice rolled onto her stomach and shifted her weight to her elbow. It freed up her other hand to snatch the light from Bounce before she could do something foolish. "Let's not, okay?" She stuffed the lighter into her pocket and climbed into a crouch before peering over the edge of the fountain toward the other group. She recognized one as Colin Falcone, but the rest not so much. They didn't look hostile, but Alice wouldn't take the chance now that Bounce was here too. Her hand went to her waistband, where she expected to find a revolver only to remember that Vic had recovered it while she was doped. A quick glance over her shoulder toward they way they had come was enough to know that Vic was safe and lying low.

She had to do something, even if was just make sure they weren't hostile. One of them was talking now, calling out and trying to put them at ease. Fat chance of that. With a pained grunt, Alice climbed to her feet, using the fountain ledge as support. "Just, stay here, okay? If something happens, get to Vic and run." This was stupid and reckless. That much was painfully clear, even as she broke cover and walked into the open. They could just be waiting for someone to be stupid enough to reveal themselves, then they'd make a move. It sounded like a trick, at any rate. Even if that was true, she had to protect Bounce. There weren't any other alternatives.

"We don't have anyone's bag and we're not looking for other people. Go your way and we'll go ours. Just leave us alone." Concise and to the point. They weren't looking for company, please fuck off. Simple. Maybe her screwed up appearance would scare them off. Her face was dirty, the right side of her head was matted, and her arm was covered in a few layers of dried blood with even more visible if she lost her shirt. And who said that spending time getting shot and beaten didn't do wonders for your looks?

Tim gave a weird look and kept looking back and forth, from the two girls at the fountain, to his two friends beside him. One of the girls had dropped down, and he honestly wasn't sure why. Were they afraid that the three boys were dangerous? Maybe they recognized Colin, and Colin's name had been broadcasted for killing Tony... Tim gave a nervous glance at Colin and shook his head. Maybe not. Maybe those girls were planning something. An attack or something? It was impossible to tell, but one thing was for sure: Those girls probably didn't want him or his friends to approach them. Something was definitely amiss.

Tim squinted his eyes. The smaller girl was reaching for something, and he took a few steps back, his eyes constantly darting back and forth. He was waiting for Colin or Jacob to offer some explanation to what was going on, some bit of help on how he should be feeling - alarmed or not. Should he be afraid? Should he walk away? Were they in any danger at all?

Jacob finally broke the silence, and Tim looked over at him, eyes wide and mouth agape. "I.. I.. I dunno?" He looked back over at the girls, in such a defensive position as if the boys were monsters or something. "I think I saw one of them reach for something though.. we might have to act fast," he whispered, trying to prepare for the very worst.

Another girl approached and headed over to the fountain where the other two girls were. Tim didn't recognize this one, but she seemed to take a similar stance to his own. She was pensive and unsure, or at least, that's what Tim thought. It was hard to tell when the three girls were a fair distance from him, and, well, he wasn't exactly a mind-reader. What in the hell was going on? His heart beat faster, his head spun in circles, but just like the three girls, he didn't act. He waited, his teeth biting firmly on his lips.

Colin took matters into his own hands and stepped forward, speaking directly to the girls. Tim wanted to grab Colin and drag him back, wanted to yell and hiss at him to stop, but he couldn't. Colin was already introducing himself, and Tim could only stand by, feeling absolutely useless. What if the girl, the one who reached for something, turned out to have a gun? She could shoot Colin, his best friend! Or they could recognize Colin's name (something he surmised a bit earlier) and grow more suspicious, but whatever happened, Tim didn't think anything good would come from this confrontation. That much was apparent when the three girls hit the deck.

There wasn't a response in kind to Colin, or at least not immediately. Tim was about to step forward and tell Colin to stay back, but one of the other girls stepped forward and spoke. Tim watched, his eyebrows raised as he listened. Wow... what an introduction. He didn't exactly expect the girls to accept them with open arms, but he did at least expect some friendly and polite responses. Nothing like.. 'leave us alone.' Really? Was Tim, Colin, and Jacob really that threatening? Or were the three girls just hiding something? Were they trying to throw them off balance so they could attack?

Tim took a few steps forward and stood beside Colin. He was shocked by the words that came out of his mouth, but he couldn't help it. He was tired and annoyed, overtly paranoid from the strange actions of these girls. His nerves were frayed and irritated. "Okay, then go your way. Leave. We were here first, so we're staying until you're gone. Got it?"

A small voice in Tim's head reminded him that the smaller girl had been here first. She was seated by the fountain when Tim and his trio arrived, but he didn't care. Who cared about logic and facts?

"Oh, I'm so ridiculous. Really? We were here first? Not likely, they'll catch me on that. Or will they? Those other two weren't here before.."

Tim wasn't sure why he did it, probably for the same reason he had mouthed off to Alice, but his hand reached back and retrieved the gun from the waistband of his jeans. He didn't aim it or anything, he just held it in his hands as if it were some kind of warning. He didn't exactly feel that the presence of these (seemingly) unarmed girls called for a gun or some form of self-defense, but he just wanted to let him know he had it. He wanted to let them know that if they tried anything funny, he had this, and he could give them hell if he wanted to.

Okay, even if he wanted to, he probably wouldn't, but damn it! He couldn't replace the gun, it was already out. And he couldn't admit that he was wrong, that they weren't here first and they should probably leave but, but..

He didn't know. He just stood there, his hand limply holding his gun, his eyes a mixture of both fear and bravado. After a few seconds of absolute and utter painful silence, Tim glanced at Colin from the corner of his eye and muttered, "Maybe we should, uh.." His voice died in his throat, for he wasn't sure what they should do. Walk away? Good god, what an interesting group of girls to run into.

Although Bounce's attention was on the lighter and of course the can within her bag, the stream of obscenities from Alice reached her ears, vaguely. Well, okay, maybe it wasn't the best 'hello' to toss your friend onto the hard ground, but that seemed a bit much. Another thought arrived to join those that were already combining to cause Bounce's stomach to be a whirling pit of anxiety. For all that though, Bounce's head was clear. Filled with an irrational objective, perhaps, but clear.

Have the lighter. Get the gasoline, it'll be heavy. Just need to wedge the spout open so it pours constantly, set it rolling. Need to push it hard. Light the trail and-

Bounce's hand had closed over the can's handle inside of her bag when abruptly, she found her other hand empty. Alice had snatched the lighter away with a slight chastisement, which didn't serve to make Bounce's mood a whole lot calmer. This group was bad news, she could just feel it. And even if they weren't specifically hostile, the more people were about, the more noise that would be made and the more attention that would be attracted. Look what happened back at the house with Aaron's group. All that noise had almost led to a shoot-out. Bounce spared a brief thought for her sort-of-friend, but then snapped her mind straight back to the matter at hand.

...She hadn't been specifically planning to kill anybody, she told herself, eyes riveted to the trio that were a short distance away from the fountain. Just to spook them, and hell, there was little better way to do that than an explosion right? ...Okay no, that was bullshit, Bounce had panicked. Now that she had a better look at the three guys that had appeared, they looked less than threatening. Guarded? Yes. Wary? Yes. But they hadn't charged in with guns ablazing, and there had been no mention of any groups of killers on the announcements.

But think of the window.

The window of opportunity. Ever notice how often people use the announcements as their way of determining whether or not to trust somebody? Doesn't that strike you as a little bit naive? I mean, I know it can warn you off the really bad guys, but there's an entire day between announcements. Think of how long people have to do whatever the hell they want without it getting flagged up until the next announcement. How many players got busted by the announcements just in the nick of time? How many got their opportunity because the other guy let their guard down because they hadn't heard them today...

Bounce firmly shoved that thought away. The announcement had barely happened ten minutes ago. It would have had to have been a hell of a killing spree, to take place in both such a short time and completely silently. Noise carried through these streets, Bounce would surely have heard something. That still in mind, it was a little bit surprising when one of the boys actually addressed her by name. Well, nickname, Bounce would've been surprised if even a fraction of the school remembered her real name. However, even as she was wondering exactly what to say, Alice fielded the question for her, walking far too out into the open for Bounce's comfort.

Just because they hadn't led with all guns blazing didn't mean that they wouldn't.

Paranoid.

Paranoia's healthy when anybody really could be out to get you.

Suddenly, one of the boys - blond-headed (maybe the Jacob Colin had referred to? Did it matter?) went for his gun. Bounce didn't even wait to see what he was going to do with it, she broke cover, dashed straight after Alice into the open.

"Alice! Alice get back here right now!"

He's got a gun, he's got a gun, oh shit shit shit. This was stupid. SHIT.

What the hell was going on?

Once the girls hit the deck over near that fountain, someone else showed up as well, some girl who looked pretty familiar showed up with them as well. The really short girl on the ground looked like she might have been fumbling with something, he couldn't tell, but nothing happened. It didn't look like anything was happening, right? At least Colin and Tim didn't look like they saw anything dangerous, cause then Colin waltzed over there.

You idiot, you know better than everyone here that you could probably just be waltzing over to some killers.

So they talked, and talked some more, and they didn't want to stay with them. That was fine by Jacob, they could look for his bag elsewhere. If it wasn't for Tim piping up, then it probably would have ended a bit smoother.

...wait, they were here first? Jacob wasn't sure. All he knew, as he approached 5 of his classmates from behind them, was that they showed up and saw that short girl there. If she showed up at the same time as them, then...probably? Still, as Jacob appeared on Colin's opposite side, he couldn't help but give Tim a confused look.

And then...

Jacob got a good look at the girl, and swallowed in instinctive fear. She was looking pretty nasty, pretty intimidating (though he wouldn't have admitted it even under torture) in the looks department, while there was something about her that seemed familiar somehow. The other two girls were more recognisable, however. You had Victoria Logan, one of Bayview's more loose girls, and Bounce, some SOTF fanatic he saw in a discussion with some people about said show not long before the trip. They kinda stood out in a crowd, in that "hey-I-know-you-but-I-don't" kinda way.

But why did the girl out front look so familiar?

...oh, that was it.

Ben told him about her, she was that tall chick from the fencing team, he knew her. Alice, right?

"...hey Alice." Jacob said grimly, but she wasn't sure if she heard him, since the Russian chick jumped out and yelled at Alice to get back. He glanced around him, looking mainly at what he had in his hands (namely, nothing; what was the matter then?), and then around him. No one else was here, but it looked like Timothy woah when did he get that gun?

Jacob didn't know what was happening any more, but he instead gritted his teeth and just hoped that everyone wasn't stupid or paranoid enough to think the wrong things.

It's not like he trusted them. He just didn't wanna die because they knew that.

It had all gone to hell so fast. First, one of the girls had made a very pointed, blunt statement which Colin was more than happy to oblige.

"We don't have anyone's bag and we're not looking for other people. Go your way and we'll go ours. Just leave us alone."

It was really fair enough. They didn't know him, he didn't know them, and he had no idea about the rest of his crew. Before he said a word, he glanced behind him. Tim was creeping closer, and Jacob looked almost stoic before the trio. The second girl on the ground had snatched something out of Bounce's hands, although from the glint and the shape he was almost certain it wasn't anything big enough to be a ranged weapon.

His head turned as he heard Tim speak. Really? We were not here first whatsoever. Bounce was here before we we-HOLY SHIT.

"Okay, then go your way. Leave. We were here first, so we're staying until you're gone. Got it?"

His mind instantly went into panic responses the moment he saw Tim's hand reaching back, retrieving a smooth, shiny black object and dangling it over the ground.

"What the fuck are you DOING?! Put that gun away!"

Shit, the girls weren't hostile at all. They wanted the trio to leave, and if they just had, then there wouldn't have been an incident. Why was that Gun out? Shit... Tim was Colin's best friend, he should really trust his judgment. But in this situation, for once, he just plain... didn't. This was a bad idea, end of story.

Jacob's soft speech was drowned out by his own panic at what the situation was unnecessarily escalating into. This really, really didn't need to happen.

"Alice! Alice get back here right now!"

The cry was shrill and pointed, and he glanced to the other two girls. His gaze was literally glued to them as he waited to their reaction. Frankly, he wouldn't be exactly surprised if they all died right here and now. Paranoia and despair were the number one enemies on this island, and hell, their group was the walking representation of at least one of them. No need to bring the other one into the mix.

The girl was sprinting towards the one with black hair. Alice.

"Maybe we should, uh.."

Suddenly, his blood was boiling. Tim's voice had trailed off, and Colin's head snapped to look directly at him. "Maybe we should what Tim? Do you have a plan for this?" His voice was stern, but not quite yet breaking that threshold to harsh just yet. The only reason he wasn't even more livid was that thought in the back of his head that he was just at fault for the atrocities on this island as any other person could be. Even the fact that he was angry right now made him a hell of a hypocrite. But he couldn't exactly help it. Taking a few steps back, his eyes flicked from Tim to the girls and then back again. He was absolutely powerless to do anything in this situation. He was unarmed, that Axe probably sitting in someone else's bag. Jacob was just as screwed, if not more-so. The kid didn't even have his bag, so a weapon wasn't exactly feasible.

Oh god fucking damn it, what do we do?

A tune popped up in his head, reminding him of days past and events that brought joy. One such brought him and Tim together. It was macabre, it was sick, and it fit the situation perfectly. Unlike the others that had pushed their ways into his mind over the past four... (or was it five?) days now, he let this tune stay.

Lazy lady... Had a baby girl. And the sweet sound it made... Oh-a-ohhh...

Oh God, oh jeez, there were a lot of them, weren't there? Way too many. Considering Alice was the only one Vic had any faith in, they were vastly outnumbered, fighting-wise. This was Bounce's fault too. Maybe not the other group wandering in, Vic didn't think the Russian was some sort of super villain, but Alice risking her life once again. Maybe the shooting on the street before wasn't her direct fault either, but if they had just stuck together, it would never have happened. If the girl hadn't insisted they split up, they might have noticed Raidon before he shoot Alice. Maybe they'd have been long gone in the first place. Maybe...

Maybe she was just bitter that this wasn't the joyous reunion she had thought it would be. Or maybe she was jealous that Alice was risking her life for someone that wasn't, well, Vic. Or she would think that if it wasn't so stupid. Vic? Jealous? Of Bounce? It wasn't the most ridiculous thing she'd ever heard, but it was up there. Bounce was scrawny, Vic was busty and leggy. Bounce was, admittedly, pretty cute, but Vic was smoking fuckin' hot. What was there to be jealous of? Even if you didn't want to say jealousy, Vic definitely felt a certain pang of something when she saw Alice step out into the open after one of the other group addressed Bounce.

Vic took the opportunity to edge deeper into cover, hoping the whole time that they didn't see her. She pulled the revolver from her belt and held it at her side, not aiming at anything in particular, just taking comfort in the fact she had something that might be able to keep hersel-no, no, something to keep Alice safe. At least none of them looked armed. That was something. Alice would say something tough and scare them off, and it would just be groovy.

Or Bounce would fuck everything up and run after Alice. Didn't that sort of defeat the purpose of Alice going out? Bounce, you fuckin' idiot! Vic felt a fresh flare of panic as she recognized a gun in one of the hands of the groups apparent leader. It looked liked Tim Questiare, but it didn't really matter, did it? She didn't need to know the guy for him to shoot Alice. Or, more importantly, Vic. At least one of the group was packing heat, what about the rest? The odds weren't great for more then one of the three to have a gun, but they were bad enough for her liking.

She had to stay and help Alice, didn't she? Alice, the girl that stood by her and believed in her and saved her. But what the hell would she be able to do with Alice's popgun? As much as she liked to think so, she wasn't fuckin' Clint Eastwood, she couldn't kill all three in time to save Alice. Fuck, if she took a shot at Tim, she'd probably miss, or worse yet, hit Alice. Where the hell did that leave her? Hiding on the street, praying something bad didn't happen? Or that Tim didn't kill her after he shoots Alice and Bounce? She couldn't do anything. She had to try, didn't she? She had to, had to do something.

Jesus, she had to run. Tim would kill Alice and Bounce and there wasn't anything Vic could do to stop it. There was no point in getting herself killed, right? Right? God, she was a coward. She was worthless despicable coward. With trembling hands, she dropped the two issued bags to the street and pulled of Alice's jacket. Ignoring the tears streaming down her cheeks was easy by comparison. With frantic and jerky movements, Vic dropped the jacket to the street corner. She couldn't take the jacket with her, she just couldn't. Taking the jacket would feel like she was robbing Alice, conveniently forgetting about the gun in her hand. It was bad enough that she was abando-leaving Alice, but she couldn't take her jacket.

With that, Vic grabbed the bags and ran. Away from Tim and his group, away from Bounce. Away from Alice.
