Flagrant One

PM first!

The woods themselves are still lush and green, with copious amounts of vegetation. Due to all the foot travel over the years, paths are still present even as the ferns start to grow. Despite this, it is still easy to get lost if one was to venture off the path as the woods are quite densely packed.

Her arm screamed at her as she pushed her back against her scant cover, and she seethed. She'd bought a few moments with the shooting, but she doubted that she'd hit anyone, she hadn't actually seen the thrower, she only really had a vague direction. Keeping their head down was the most she could do while she regrouped.

An ambush. That wasn't in the script for meeting Arizona. Could she have found another member of the team? There was zero chance of Shauna finding the guts for a move like that, but Garnet played softball, she could have thrown that rock.

Whatever. Whoever, running had slipped away as a consideration. Quinn hadn't looked for a fight, but Arizona had brought one, and she'd fought dirty in bringing it.

She had the chance to walk away.

Bullets cracked against Quinn's tree, and her face tugged into a snarl. A shootout wasn't going to work. Too much luck. But, if she could get Arizona and partner to keep their heads down...

Quinn shot once more at the bushes, then fumbled through her hoodie for a fresh magazine, which she clutched against the gun as she held on with both hands, forcing her arm to cooperate. Breathe.

She fired at the bushes again, then in Arizona's direction, then, as she stepped out, continued to pull the trigger, charging towards Arizona's cover, darting through the trees.

Quinn was heading towards her, firing the entire time. Some more shots had also been fired Jonah's way. Arizona hoped he was okay, but she had no way of knowing. They both knew what going after Quinn had meant. But she didn't know if she was prepared for that result. There wasn't time to dwell on it. She had a multiple time killer charging at her.

Arizona easily could have fired back at her. But she wasn't convinced her aim or hand would hold up. The other, more unexpected option was just to charge Quinn with the double knife, which was a crazy fucking plan. But then again, confronting Quinn had been a crazy plan to begin with so who really gave a shit.

Either she died or Quinn did. So what was taking one risk in the grand scheme of things?

Arizona spat the double knife out of her mouth and took it in her left hand, with her right she fired off as quick a burst as her fingers could allow. That made five bullets gone.

She tucked herself into the tree, stuffed the gun into her pocket and waited for Quinn to get closer.

Once she was, Arizona burst out from her cover, kept low and wrapped her arms around Quinn’s waist and thighs, using all her strength to throw the other girl and herself to the ground. Indiana would have been proud of the force of the tackle.

More return fire whizzed back at Quinn, but the angle was bad, Quinn was moving quickly, and Arizona was firing blind: the shots went wild.

She couldn't drag this out, not with an accomplice waiting in the wings, and Quinn felt vaguely disappointed in knowing that. Someone like Arizona deserved some fanfare. Some retribution for making this into a fight when it didn't have to be.

But rock-thrower prevented that. She'd have to repay them in kind.

The thoughts flitted through her head as she ran, stoking the eager flames within. Her blood was up. Arizona would regret provoking her.

She lunged around the corner of the tree and was met with Arizona coming the other way, slamming into her waist and bearing her to the ground. Her back hit a root, arching across and jolting her whole body.

Quinn howled as her weapon went dry and started to slam the gun into the side of Arizona's face.

Quinn was like an animal. Now Arizona had her cornered she was lashing out. The gun connected with her cheek and eyebrow multiple times and her skin split open under the assault. Arizona raised her right arm up to protect her face from the blows.

With her left she punched down at Quinn. It was an attempt to stun the girl, slow her down so she could put the double knife to use. But it was hard with the constant stream of blows Quinn was throwing out.

Deciding to cut out the middle man Arizona just slammed her head into Quinn’s face instead.

Spitting and clawing, Quinn struck again and again, uncaring for the connection so long as she struck, hurt, maimed.

Her left arm wasn't holding up, even her blinding rage insufficient to dull the pain entirely, to fight through that something was wrong, perhaps broken.

The very thought set her seething fury to overflowing.

"Fucking kill you!" Quinn snarled, then her head was snapped back by Arizona's. She saw stars, then blood. Her grip loosened, and the pistol slid from her fingers. For a second she was untethered, unmoored almost from consciousness.

Then she stuck her fingers in Arizona's face. Her wounded arm came around and hammered a punch at her throat.

Stars flashed in her vision as their heads collided. But it bought her a reprieve. She could feel the blood running down the side of her face from the cuts Quinn had opened. Some of it fell over her eyes and down to her mouth.

Panting she tightened her grip on the double bladed knife and raised it but before she could strike Quinn’s hand shot up. Fingers digging into her eyes. Arizona started to cry out but was cut-off as a punch landed directly on her throat, knocking her off Quinn and to the ground.

Arizona faltered and Quinn took the opportunity to raise her legs underneath her, pushing Arizona up, creating some space. With a fresh yell that tore right from the bottom of her lungs, Quinn kicked up, planting her feet into Arizona's hips and stomach to flip her up and over her head.

Now with some separation, Quinn rolled over twice, her arm snatching a traitorous yelp of pain from her as it rocked against the selfsame tree root. Her hand scrambled in the undergrowth, and then seized upon her prize, the glock. Already grasping in her hoodie for more ammo, Quinn snatched up the gun, and then whirled around to put an end to...

...Arizona wasn't there.

Quinn's eyes darted to and fro. How—it couldn't have been more than a few seconds! Where the hell was she!?

Predator became prey.

Her head whipped back and forth as she searched.

Two steps and she was directly behind her.

“Hey now.”

The blade thunked into the small of her back, sinking deep.

Quinn screeched in pain and fury.

No, no, no no. They didn't get to do this. They didn't get to use cheap tricks to beat her, they didn't get to win. She didn't lose. She did not lose. That wasn't how this worked. That was not how this was supposed to FUCKING work!

Dead. Dead. They were fucking dead. She'd rip them apart and make each other watch, she'd tear that blade from Arizona's hands and stare her down as she saw her own fucking GUTS spill out.

Quinn launched an elbow back at Arizona's face. The pistol magazine slammed home.

Jonah winced and covered his ears as another spray of bullets showered the bushes next to his tree. He gulped and looked down, seeing a bullet had grazed his right leg, which had not been all the way behind the tree trunk.

His ears were ringing, but once a three count passed without further gun fire, Jonah looked out from behind the tree. He faintly heard some sort of noise and crouched down to collect a few of his rocks and put them in his pockets.

The next thing he heard was Quinn screaming that he was going to kill Arizona. He rocketed up from his crouched position deciding to risk going into the open.

He looked around frantically and heard a scream. Jonah ran in the direction of the noise, skidding to to a stop about four car lengths away from the fight in time to see Quinn launch a attack on Arizona, whose face was bloodied. The world became awash in the same red color.

"STOP IT," he called out. His voice boomed in a way it almost never did, because he almost never raised it.

Out of pure habit he tossed the rock up before catching it, rearing back again and sending the swiftest pitch he could muster in Quinn's direction. He put his entire soul behind that fast ball.

She connected, but didn't feel the satisfying crunch of flesh and bone giving way. Not good enough. She'd take this gun and jam it down Arizona's fucking throat!

Another spike, higher up her back now. Quinn spasmed backwards, then choked, and found that there was blood in her throat, in her mouth. She could feel warmth trailing down her spine.

No, absolutely not, no! She was not going to die. She wasn't going to let these worthless nothings kill her. They didn't even count, they were just dolls walking around with fucking faces painted on top of them and she was not going to die to fucking mannequins!

Arizona had a grip around her shoulders and prevented her from twisting around, she aimed the gun backwards, attempting to fire at her, pulling the trigger as they scrambled for position, stumbling here and there. The grasp was loosening, Arizona was moving, trying to stay out of the line of fire, that gave her an opportunity—

Someone yelled. Quinn's head snapped up. A rock met it the other way.

Nono
nnon
fucking
noteven

The blade sank into her back one more time, Quinn slumped limp, then collapsed onto her face.

Quinn fell and Arizona fell with her. She pulled the knife free and rolled off the lifeless body to lie next to her former teammate. Staring up at the sun. Somehow it was still day. It felt weird, normally the killer was defeated at night.

She raised a hand to her face, touching the cuts and gashes Quinn’s attacks had opened up. She could feel the blood running down her face and her hand came away red. She sat up and looked at her former teammates body. Then back at her bloody hands and the knife. They were shaking.

It was over. They’d done it. She’d killed.

“Jo...” She swallowed. “Jonah, are you alright?”

Jonah grimaced out of habit when the rock connected and Arizona stabbed her. After a beat Jonah's fuzzed out adrenaline state was interrupted by his normal brain. He ran full sprint towards Arizona and hugged her, nearly sending them down in an echo of Arizona's earlier tackle.

"I'm fine," he reassured her, squeezing her tightly.

"I'm fine," he repeated, quieter.

"You're fine," he whispered, blood dripping down his arm.

She opened her eyes. She couldn't see out of one of them.

What was left of her cheek pressed against the dirt.

Shattered. Broken.

Malevolently furious.

The blood soaking her skin felt less warm, dipping to ice. Sensations blared in and out, a klaxon wail.

Pain? Who gave a fuck about the pain?

She was alive. She was alive.

And she refused. To. Die. Like. This.

She rose up from the dead. Gore dripped from underneath her matted fringe.

One baleful eye fixed on the pair, daring to embrace, daring to think they'd won.

With a feral, gurgling snarl, Quinn hurled herself onto Arizona's back, wrapping both arms around her neck.

Jonah was there. He was alright. She returned his embrace.

But as soon as she did something collided with her.

Quinn wasn’t dead.

They rolled across the dirt of the woodland floor, tearing at each other. Arizona ended up on top staring down at Quinn, teeth bared.

She looked at her teammates face, covered in a mixture of both their blood.

The knife was still held tight in her hand. There was no way she was going to leave any doubt the second time.

With a snarl she raised the knife and brought it down. Again and again and again. Over and over. Blood spattered her face, arcing up when she raised her arm and splashing back when she brought it down.

She didn’t stop, not until Quinn was unrecognisable. Not until she was sure there was no coming back from what she had done.

She screamed at what she left behind, curses, hate and pain passing her lips. Her voice breaking as everything that she’d held inside since she’d woken up came out. She didn’t recognise the sound of her own breathing when she finished.

The blood soaked knife was still held tight in her hand as she stared, panting, at the wreckage.
