From Serenity To Shame
Fuck! Missed!
Bobby knew that he should have spent longer aiming, but he knew that it was very likely the hooded figure would have spotted him if he had just stood there, and simply jumped away from the edge of the lookout, taking cover from any shots Bobby could fire.
Just as they had now.
Bobby cursed slightly. It had been an awkward situation, at best. Either the mysterious grenadier had already been inside the lookout tower from the start (unlikely, considering that the grenade had been thrown into the tower from outside) or they had entered just as Bobby was leaving out the opposite side. Putting that into the equation, the boxer knew he was lucky not to have been ambushed from behind. Then, of course, Bobby had spotted the figure again, this time as they moved upstairs.
It would have been ideal to have simply taken out the student (whoever they were) from the start, but Bobby couldn't help that now - he'd missed and blown his best shot (literally) at scoring another kill. From what he had seen, there wasn't that many places to hide inside of the tower (although of course, he hadn't seen the top floor). That meant it was unlikely he could be ambushed - how was it possible to sneak attack somebody with a grenade? On the other hand... the hooded figure might not have been the person with the grenades at all, simply another student in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Shit... too complicated.
Bobby realised he hadn't put another round into the chamber, and dragged the bolt back again. Remembering the manual (and the two shots the gun had already fired) Bobby knew that he had thirteen shots left before he had to replace the magazine. That was nice, but in truth, the carbine didn't really outclass anything except for pistols - there most certainly had to be better weapons out there.
Bobby cursed as he thought about his hesitation. The hooded figure had now had plenty of time to make themselves scarce whilst he was deliberating. He couldn't afford to do that. Equally though, he couldn't let a potential kill get away without some sort of a fight.
The boxer stepped back (making sure to take his finger off the trigger of his carbine so as to not fire it accidentally) took a run up, then dived headlong through the entrance to the lookout, rolling (rather unpleasantly) through some bits of the fat kid, before coming to a stop in the centre of the room. There didn't appear to be anybody inside, which really just made his diving roll look rather silly. Bobby grinned sheepishly. At least nobody had been there to see it. Though of course, if there had been, Bobby would have been obliged to kill them...

Eduardo Trinidad wasn't sure where he was trekking to. A good portion of the time he had spent fleeing the barracks and trying to arrange his thoughts was spent checking to see if anyone was following him...and checking his steps to see if he was about to hit any traps. And taking his first dump somewhere in the middle of the jungle. Rather than a manual, the weapon's assigned reading was a copy of Beowulf, which he'd already read back in junior high that it was useful now for only one purpose. Other than that, business was business in the game of life and death, and he went about it with no satisfaction or dismay. Yet.
It was presently that a flash of light caught the corner of Eddie's eye, followed by a loud "thud" that had the ring of a faraway implosion, causing him to drop to a squat and shift his glance in the light's direction. His sword had been sheathed behind him, the tip denting the dirt as he dropped. He would've heard the clink were he not oddly fascinated with what was happening in the direction he was facing.
A lookout tower rose clear over the jungle canopy, and the path he was taking offered a fairly clear view of the whole structure. There appeared to be someone going in
He made for the ditch on the side of the path and started crouch-walking toward the structure. He knew he was coming into visibility as the ditch ended near the tower, and thus decided to move faster. The sound of gunshots as he approached didn't seem to slow him down one bit. It was these noises that explained why he didn't go straight for the doorway or the windows of the lookout tower that had been shattered by the force of the grenade explosion (or stained with blood, as he noticed when he got there.) Instead, he flung himself toward the wall beside the doorway and unsheathed his sword. He held the Highlander with both hands, one pinching the blade so as not to cut himself.
The Pan-Am could hear and feel his chest heaving at the realization that he really was taking a knife to a gunfight...but there were only a couple of shots since he started his dash. He was relatively safe here...but he had to decide whether to fight or flee to fight another day. The only way to do that, it seemed, was first to look inside and get a relatively good idea of who he might have gotten after him. He hadn't heard any announcements yet, so as long as they didn't know what he'd done with Tanya...
Curiosity kills the cat. Unless the cat's already dead.
Eddie tilted a bit so that he peered inside the room, but the darkening horizon meant it was hard to make out exactly what was going on inside. There appeared to be only one figure in there, vaguely lit by the moonlight. By the size of the figure He heard words, probably not from within the building, but "What now?" didn't give him a better picture of what was going on.
"Anybody alive in there?" he shouted in a tone that lacked sympathy and sadism, trying to time himself in the first sizable gap of silence that presented itself. It was a voice that had been well-honed to sound as matter-of-fact as possible, even in a situation where classmates were killing each other in cold blood. As he spoke he took another glance into the single room, just as brief as the last before withdrawing back and starting to scoot away from the doorway and around the corner of the building into its shadow.
Probably because this time he noticed the jock inside had a gun. He was going to have to restrain his frustration until later.

Seeing that Corbin was apparently ready to fight at a moment's notice was comforting to some extent, although Khrysta still wasn't certain whether or not he could pull the trigger when push came to shove. He awaited his orders, once again, and Khrysta simply ignored him, instead focusing intently on the scene that was unfolding before her.
As quickly as the African-American boy had been standing outside, he had all but somersaulted into the lookout tower. She wondered, momentarily, if they were about to bear witness to a quite dangerous confrontation. Fortunately, no gunshots echoed out afer the boy entered the tower. That meant one of two things.
One, no one was inside. Khrysta could have sworn she saw a hooded figure escaping into the tower. Unless her mind was playing tricks on both herself and the athlete that had entered the tower, someone was most definitely inside that tower. That option could all but be thrown away.
And that meant...
Two, that boy and the hooded figure were inside, fighting to the death. Either that, or they hadn't encountered one another yet. Considering the black kid had been firing shots at the hooded one, there was no way that there wasn't going to be a confrontation between the two. It was imminent.
So then, what did they do? Their choices were rather slim. They could escape back into the jungle, which by now was so dark you could barely see your hand in front of your face, they could continue to hide in the foliage until the tower was once again vacant, but that could easily leave them out in the cold for the night. Or, they could go assist one student or the other and try to join up with them for the night.
I don't like this... I don't like it at all.
Her attention turned back to Corbin and raised a finger as if to signal for him to continue to be silent. The instant her head turned back toward the tower, she saw a blob of grey headed toward the tower. She recognized him as Eduardo Trinidad-Villa, not because she knew him on a personal level but simply because she'd shared a few classes with him, though the two had never spoken more than two words to one another.
Eduardo seemed to be armed with a sword and wondered up to the tower curiously before peering inside and calling out to whoever might have entered. Khrysta almost wanted to jump up and tell him to stop being a fool and get out of the way, but she definitely wasn't going to put her own life in danger for a classmate she'd hardly even spoken to.
Instead, she simply sat and continued to watch, practically waiting on the black athlete that had entered the building to cap Eduardo and put and end to him. Her attention turned back to Corbin after a moment and she simply shrugged her shoulders, still watching the happenings around the tower from her peripheral vision.
"We can stay and hope whoever wins the fight that's about to happen is friendly, or we can get out of here and take our chances in the dark. Take your pick."

Bobby was in the midst of taking stock of the situation and considering his next action when he heard a voice, very close by. His first assumption was that it had to be the mysterious hooded figure, but common sense dictated otherwise - somebody who threw a grenade at you wasn't going to go for the subtle approach. Beside which, the voice was coming from outside, and Bobby refused to believe somebody could have gone from the top of the tower, out and around the other side to get behind him in the time it had taken for him to enter. You'd have to be very fast indeed, and it would be difficult not to make noise, noise which Bobby most certainly would have heard.
Bobby didn't recognise the voice... so it couldn't be any of the others he had seen so far - nor had they witnessed the entire fracas earlier, otherwise they wouldn't be asking if any people were inside... Bobby grinned - the kid would have no way of knowing that he was playing the game. Once he was off his guard, at his ease...
The boxer raised the gun silently and mimed shooting, before chuckling softly. He turned towards the doorway where the voice had come from (or thereabouts) and responded to the call he had made.
"Yes, there's somebody in here. Looks like there was quite an explosion in here. Collar maybe? There is a guy in pieces on the floor..." Bobby said this loudly enough to make sure the person outside would hear, but no more than that (unlike the shout which the other had spoken at, rather foolishly). Bobby slipped the golf club out of its position in his pack and began twirling it in one hand absentmindedly, his carbine still frimly in the other. Now, to wait, and see if the little fish would take the bait...

It was getting dark, and Khrysta was right, if they left now it would be taking their chances in the dark, but considering what was unfolding not that far from them, it seemed safer. Niel continued to watch, he heard voices at the tower, and he knew as well that there was probably going to be a fight, and he really didn't want to stay around to watch it, and to especially get caught up in it. What are the chances that whoever wins will be friendly? Maybe it's a friend of his? No, it wouldn't be.
Corbin started to walk backwards in a crouch through the brush, his M16 still aimed forward. He glanced at Khrysta and said, "I think getting out of here wouldn't be a bad idea."
Corbin was obviously scared, he's been scared his entire stay on the island. His encounter with Khrysta, though initially scaring him more, gave him hope, because she seemed to know what to do, how to keep them from being killed. In all honestly, if Corbin hadn't have met her, he might be laying dead by now, killed because he trusted the wrong person.
He knew his weapon would help him, and Khrysta a lot. Though he definitely didn't want to use it. Especially not now. So that's what prompted his answer that he wanted to get out of here. So he started to walk backwards, then turned around and faded into the darkness, waiting for Khrysta to catch up and lead the way.

'Goddammit, just leave already!'
To say that Ivye was getting annoyed in the heat of the night was the understatement of the century. At first, hiding underneath the bed had seemed like such a great idea, but now it really seemed thoughtless and funnily enough, somewhat shameful. The tight, cramped space that she took up was beginning to burden her legs a bit, and the unbeknownst person inside of the building was just standing there.
'This is gonna drive me crazy,' the albino girl thought with a grimace, listening intently for the sound of something changing.
Her leg was actually starting to get a cramp, and that was definitely not good to be dealing with when fighting for one's life out there. Why hadn't she just escaped through the back door when she had the chance? She mused on that for a couple of moments. Wait. Was that a voice from outside? At first she stiffened like a porcupine awaiting someone to try to touch it, but then... Interesting... maybe she could kill two birds with one stone here to make up for the loss of the others earlier. That same smirk from before spread her lips as she heard the person who had attempted to shoot her respond innocently to the other person. He had so very obviously lied about what had gone on. He was obviously playing the game; and well, to be sure.
'Competition, eh? This is better than I thought.'

Khrysta couldn't make out what was going on in the tower anymore. It had gotten very dark, very quickly, and she could barely see the silhouette of the tower in the distance, nevermind whoever had been outside of it. Much to her surprise, not only did Corbin answer her, but he didn't answer her with the "I don't know, what do you wanna do?" that she had been anticipating from him.
She supposed that taking their chances in the jungle might be better than hanging around this area. At least one of the students inside was confirmed to be playing, and considering he'd been firing at the hooded individual not all that long ago, the likelihood that they were sitting down inside the tower making a truce was slim to none.
She didn't have time to think on a plan of action for long before Corbin rose to his feet and began inching backwards, apparently still watching the tower. When he felt he was well enough out of view, he turned around and sprinted off into the deep, black jungle behind them. Khrysta found herself bounding to her feet as well and running to keep up.
Thankfully for her, the blonde was in quite good shape and it wasn't long before she was on Corbin's heels, trailing him through the forest. He seemed to slow down, as if waiting for her to take the lead. Unfortunately, as it had been when they had left the jailhouse, Khrysta hadn't had time to look at the map at all. She didn't want to admit it to Corbin, but he'd have been just as capable of running blindly through the dark as she was.
Okay, Khrysta. It's okay. Everything's going to be all right.
She had to keep telling herself that, whether she believed it or not. Throughout the whole first day on the island, she had managed to stay calm, composed, and collected. Truthfully, she didn't know how much longer she could do it. Of course, she wanted to break down and scream and cry just like so many of the other students had probably done. The fact was, though, Khrysta simply couldn't bring herself to hit that level.
"Okay Corbin... just follow me..." she ordered before continuing her sprint through the jungle.

Eddie recognized the voice's accent as African-American, but he couldn't put an identity on it. It could as well have been Tyrese Paramore's as much as it could have been Corbin Barrett's or Bobby Jacks'. Even then he was still - no pun intended - in the dark about what having been thrown in the game would've done to their mindset. The one other thing he was certain about the person inside - apart from the fact that he had a gun and was a jock - was that he was lying.
The chuckle betrayed everything. That and the smell of blood. The jock wasn't lying that someone was in pieces, that scent was still fairly fresh in the air and floating around. The explosion he'd heard and the subsequent shots could've come from someone's collar being shot and the others in the lookout tower fleeing the scene. Unfortunately for him, it would probably attract the jock's attention if he'd decided to pursue them. The only options now were to escape via a separate route or to engage the jock...both dangerous but inevitable. Right now, Eddie slithered away into the building's shadow side, trying to find a safe spot that was temporary enough for him to mull his options over.
Eddie briefly closed his eyes as soon as his figure was completely obscured in the shadow. With night falling quickly, the spot he was in also started to turn pitch black, and there was no worry about the moonlight glinting off of his bloodstained sword. With the dark clothing he was wearing, he would be practically invisible as long as he didn't make any incriminating noises. All he had to do was lure the jock out...and find some way to make him drop his gun. He tensely eyed the corner he'd come from, just waiting for the jock to follow...

There was no response from outside, and that worried Bobby. The unknown visitor must have figured out that something was amiss, and had probably made himself scarce already. However, it also meant that he had to sacrifice more attention than he was really willing to, and if the hooded figure inside, that would be potentially dangerous, since he could easily be attacked from behind. Although, once again, it was difficult to sneak attack somebody with a hand grenade. On the other hand, what if the hooded figure was not the grenadier?
Bobby hesitated, there was one thing that he could do to enable him to keep an eye on both entrances at the same time, but it meant that if there was anybody upstairs, he could easily be attacked from behind. Then again... Bobby refused to believe that anybody could possibly creep up on (or rather, down on) him from a staircase - especially a wooden one. A slight creak would do it...
That made up his mind, Bobby turned away from the door and moved up onto the stairs. He seated himself so that he was still in the room enough to see the doors, but he wouldn't be immediately apparent to anybody coming inside. Wary of any listeners, Bobby also thumped on the stairs a few more times with his feet, to give off the impression to a listener that he was still moving and (hopefully) that he had gone right up to the top of the tower. Carefully positioned, Bobby laid down his golf club gently, and brought the carbine into a more comfortable position, from which he could aim easily if need be.
I've got no choice. Play to win. Play to survive.

The conditions were obviously worsening when Ivye learned of just who had been outside. She recognized the voice of someone who she knew would probably be a contender to face off against later on, one of the few people she actually had spoken more than a few words to at Southridge. Eduardo Trinidad was similar to the albino in his obvious distaste for other persons, especially whomever he dubbed one of the "populars" of the school. In all reality, the actress doubted whether or not he would actually survive to see the morning light, for iln her time of hiding it had transpired into night, and someone like Eddie, creepy and not very likable, would be a suitable target for whoever was in the room with her. This other person(for Ivye didn't have the slightest who he was) had obviously played some sort of trick to make the Latino think that he had gone into the tower.
'Sneaky, that one. I like the way this guy thinks. Maybe I can learn a thing or two before I blow him to kingdom come.'
Were it not for the aching pain growing stronger in her leg, the self-coined vampiress would have probably fled the scene by now, or at least tried to access her weaponry. As it were, she was left with the only real option of the evening, to be a sitting duck underneath the mattress, a figurative pea for whatever princess were to stumble upon the tower looking for a rest area. Because she was probably going to be forced into staying there for a while; if the two boys didn't go ahead and kill one another, that is. If only. She imagined herself with a more suitable weapon for close combat, like a butcher's knife or some sort of bludgeoning device. It really only came down to whether or not you planned on living to the end, and she did. Ivye Dewley may have been presently hiding from someone armed with a gun, but she also was one of the only competitors that really would fight to her death in battle. After all, what good is a performer if they weren't willing to give their all on stage?
A frown found Ivye's lips as she thought about how she probably looked like some sort of frightened rodent on camera, a disappearing assistant in a magician's act, only with the girl armed with explosives as she reappears from beneath a cloth shield. Then she thought about sawing her classmates in half, preparing them for a macabre act that would be purposefully messed up, gore seeping through the singular boxes with body parts stiffened and faces with silent screams due to the excruciating pain that would be blades slicing the body into thirds. She began smiling again as she thought about Eddie in that predicament.
'Now where's a magician when you need one,' she asked herself silently with a grin, 'I could use some magic right now.'

Eddie probably would have been snarling for a bit before eventually losing the will to live in that sort of predicament, being the kind of person who would have welcomed it.
He looked up and waited for what was probably a minute or so. He heard steps going up to the balcony, but not steps on the balcony. Which could have meant that the jock was either hiding on the stairs or patrolling the balcony with his socks on. Either way, the jock probably had a flashlight on him as well, so this darkness was no longer safe.
Death would have to wait on his doorstep until the gray child could figure out what it was that his (and curiously, Damien's) friend wanted him to figure out. And before that he had to figure out how to get around - or hopefully through - the jock with a gun patrolling the lookout. Before he got up to move, he noticed a large stick near him - and close to the foliage, about as long as the sword. He leaned forward and picked it up. It was the kind of stick that couldn't do nearly as damage as the Highlander Eddie wielded, but that obviously wasn't his intent.
With a quick scrape across the blade's sharp edge, Eddie cut away one of his shirt sleeves. One of the stick's forked branches was sturdy enough for him to tie his flashlight to with the strips of fabric that came from it. Then he took out his loaf of bread and impaled it on the tip of the stick, though not enough for the tip to go through the top. He wanted it to look as much like a human head as he could get a loaf of bread to, and this came pretty damn close. Once this crude apparatus was ready, he held its "operational end" close to the window.
Eddie didn't say anything. In fact, he had briefly peered through the window on the dark side of the building on his way back. He could only see what blood was lit by whatever light seeped in through one of the doors, but the odor of the blood and various bits and pieces of what might either have been the jock's first victim or someone who had tried to remove his collar in disbelief told him enough to not peer in for a closer look.
From the angle of the light, however, it would look like Eddie was peering through the window next to the doorway with his flashlight, wondering what the hell was going on. If the jock fell for it and shot the dummy, he could at least go for the table that was just inside the door opposite ...but that was if Eddie was feeling extremely foolhardy. He was more rationally hoping for - and this was if he was convinced enough to go for the jock - luring the lummox outside with his back turned to Eddie and then giving him the Highlander treatment from the nearby shadows. If all else failed in his mind, he could just cut and run, losing only his flashlight and his given loaf of bread. Right now, he just hoped the flashlight would hold steady.

Come on in little guy... the big one is gone...
Bobby almost jumped when a light shone into the room beneath him, but managed to restrain himself - trying to prevent himself causing any noise whatsoever. If he did, his cover might have been blown, if the guy outside hadn't already figured out his trick that was...
Bobby could see the flashlight now, and it shone into the lookout, illuminating it in the darkness. He frowned, strange though, that it had stopped moving... you would have thought that a person who would use their flashlight would at least sweep with it. It wasn't a quick look either, the light was quite level, and had been so for the last few seconds.
Hm... you trying to play a trick of your own there? Can't see you properly in the shadow behind that light... Okay, from this angle you won't see me, at least with the beam. It isn't pitch black yet after all, so maybe you'll spot me up here in the shadows...
Bobby thought about what to do for a few moments further, then carefully picked up his golf club from its place and half twisted before stretching up the stairs, knocking it on each step as he did so, and proceeding to stretch as much as he could to reach the furthest possible spot. Putting Bobby's size into consideration and the extra distance afforded by the club, this was quite some way.
Bobby shifted back again, taknig care not to hit the stairs as he moved back down and replaced the club on the step that he had been keeping it. Once again he trained his gun on the entraceway and the window, hoping that the as-of-yet unseen person outside would be encouraged to further curiosity. Bobby grinned as he settled down again. He had plenty of time to wait, as long, in fact, as it took for the one who was outside to decide it might be worth exposing more of their body. Element of surprise or not, Bobby wasn't confident of hitting the figure, amd he had a slight suspicion that he might be on the wrong end of a cunning ploy...

Eddie had been contemplating his next move when his thought patterns were suddenly jarred by a loud speaking sort-of noise blaring out across his environs. As soon as he could vaguely focus himself, he realized that the speaking was none other than one of Danya's announcements. And, for once throughout the game, he was focused on something other than playing it.
"Bobby Jacks," he whispered to himself. At least now he knew who that was stalking him, or rather the one trying to. It was hard trying to stalk someone when you literally brought a knife to a gunfight. He still didn't realize that Ivye Dewley was also in the building, nor that it was her grenade that caused the explosion he'd heard earlier.
Then came the mention of his kill. Eddie gave a soft grin at the thought of being credited, or mostly credited, anyway. The name Nathaniel Harris seemed curiously familiar to him, but it was only after Danya mentioned the pool of blood that Eddie pushed Tanya into that he made the connection to the masked freak in class. He then made a mental note to "thank" Blood Boy if the two ever met, as close as they unknowingly came to encountering each other back at the barracks. Not that BB reminded him of anyone familiar, even despite his strange in-class behavior and what he'd heard he'd done to Renee and the behemoth Boxer Carvalho, Eddie simply shrugged him off.
But then came the beeping. Danya did not have to announce where the danger zones were for Eddie to figure that he was about to linger in one.
"Fuck," he muttered, teeth clenched hard. He slumped back against the building and sighed, trying to collect his thoughts, now that his ears were getting used to Danya's bellowing.
That Bobby hadn't discovered him quite yet could be used to his advantage, but amidst the noise barrage, Bobby could easily exploit the silence as well as Eddie could. He put the stick down and untied his flashlight, switching it off and sticking it back in his bag. He then ripped off a good chunk of the loaf of bread (that hadn't already been contaminated by what might have been on that twig) and stuffed that into his mouth. Tense moments of stealth did work up an appetite.
With Mr. Danya's announcement still blaring loud and clear over the jungle canopy, Eddie sheathed his sword and made a break for it, supply bag slung over his shoulder. He still had his kill and most of his supplies. He snarled as a loose tree branch made a bit of a cut into his unsleeved arm, but now wasn't the time to stop to apply first aid, let alone figure out what he was supposed to figure out.
Not yet.

Tch... that's inconvenient.
Much as he would have liked to keep up his vigil, it appeared that the designation of danger zones wasn't going to give him that luxery. Bobby stood up on the stairs and replaced his golf club in the loop of his pack. The torch bearer had gone, so Bobby had nothing preventing him from making himself scarce - which he did not hesitate in doing, darting down the stairs and charging out of the tableside door to get out of there as quckly as possible.
