Thread of the Manatee

... chyeah? I SO went there.

A long, swinging bridge that crosses a deep ravine heading into the uninhabited part of the island. The bridge sways eerily in the wind and the fall into the ravine below almost certainly spells doom for anyone who happens to lose their balance or step too close to the edge.

Cara's whole body convulsed.

Her wide, horrified eyes stared right at Joey as two streams of tears ran down her cheeks. Snot had made its way out of Cara's nose and made its way down towards her mouth. Choked sobbing noises could be heard escaping from her mouth and the gun was still held tightly in her outstretched hands.

She couldn't believe what she had done. Shooting someone was against everything she believed in, yet she had done it. It was something she never expected herself to be able to do.

"Y... You shot me."

Joey had started screaming at her, she couldn't blame him, however. What she did was terrible and she was ashamed of herself. She felt like screaming, but words wouldn't come out. The world was crumbling around Cara Scholte.

Dark fog started to envelope her. Every thought she had in her head was now scattered and she couldn't think straight. Things weren't the same anymore. The people around her had all become shadowy figures. Words were unrecognizable now. She was in her own little world and didn't mind it one bit. She could be safe here.

One of the shadows was approaching her, however.

---

BAM

In the real world, Cara's standing form had shot another bullet from the Mauser at the lunging Joey. Her clouded eyes weren't focused on anything, yet the bullet went straight towards him.

Her now unresponsive body fell over from lack of balance and was sprawled out on the ground below her. During the fall, the Mauser flew out of her hand and landed some feet away.

---

It was over now. All Cara needed to do was blink her eyes and the shadow was gone. Things couldn't hurt her in this world.

Not anymore.

Joey was never the one for plain common sense. For example: no normal person would go running at a gun-wielding enemy head first without thinking it through first. Many people would actually run in the opposite direction, and Joey would have been one of these said people. However, if there was one thing that overshadowed Joey's cowardliness was his rock-hard self-importance. Cara hurt Joey, so logic should be on Joey's side right? That's what he thought. Of course, he didn't even take into account all the horrible things he's done. For example, he was known for constantly stalking Serenity Halos home and molested a few girls as well. Not only this, but the fact that he was strangling someone a minute earlier was reason enough that sure, logic was on his side but karma was on the other side of the field.

Karma.

Joey had always wondered where Karma was when he was always done wrong to.

Karma.

Well.... he was just about to find out where karma was.

The one, single bullet struck him near the top of his head, running right through and creating a huge hole in his head. He would have screamed in pain, if the bullet didn't went straight through his brain. It killed him instantly. He was dead. His body crumpled up in a dead heap, the fresh tears from his face rubbing off against the already wet grass.

All of Joey's unknown sins were avenged, and Joey went out the way he came in: A pathetic, childish bastard that no one liked.

Then, there was silence, and one question remained. Hell, it was the question. The second gunshot had obviously had to have put paid to Joey, what with the silence. Was it a player... or a saviour?

Not that I'm complainin' but who th' fuck shot him?

That was a priority. If somebody had shot Joey, then they might well be perfectly willing to kill her too.

"Hello?" Maxie croaked out. "Who's there? And are ya playin' or did ya just save my ass?"

On the face of it, that might have seemed stupid. A potential killer and she was broadcasting her position to them? Moron. However, to Maxie, it was a simple equation. The shooter had to already know where she was bunkered down - they'd shot at Joey in the first instance, and Maxie hadn't exactly gone far. The rescue might have been coincidence, but the question served two ends. Either Maxie would get an answer, and hence a better idea of where the person was, and maybe a reassurance, or she'd get quiet. And... that'd be worrying.

She could hear something.

A deep, low sound. The kind of sound that people in slow motion make, but the words weren't clear.

Was somebody there? Joey?

No, it couldn't be. She made him disappear! But... who else could it be?

----

Cara was sitting in fetal position, her arms were wrapped around her legs and her head was buried into her knees.

Nothing going on around her seemed to puncture the world Cara had made for herself.

There was no reply. Maxie frowned at that - even players usually spoke, and since she quite clearly didn't have a gun, and whoever had saved her did, there was all the reason in the world to gloat if they wanted to. Then again, they could be a little wilier than most and decided keeping quiet would give them more of an advantage...

Maxie's eyes widened and she dived for cover, expecting a hail of bullets to smack into her from behind at any moment. But it didn't happen. There were no gunshots. It would have been embarassing if there had been anybody around to see her suddenly freak out like that.

Cautiously, she came out from behind a tree, only to spot, lying on the ground curled up... a girl. Wait... a girl? Maxie looked a little closer. It was the same one from before, the one that had been running away. Cara. A gun lay next to her, and Maxie knew that this must be her saviour. Shooting Joey must have seriously unhinged her... and Maxie couldn't really blame her. The delinquent had got into a couple of scrapes during her time on the island, but she hadn't yet been forced to kill anybody. It was almost unthinkable to actually go that far... and she most certaily didn't want to consider the effect it would have on her if she actually did kill someone. Best to never find out.

Maxie thought it would probably be a good idea to get the gun out of the way - didn't want her going crazy after all. Carefully, Maxie picked it up and just shifted it so that it was she was between the other girl and it. No more shooting today. She did however keep it close enough to be able to pick it right up if anybody threatening arrived on the scene.

"Hey ... uh, I appreciate ya savin' me. If ya hadn't come back he... probably would've killed me."

Well, perhaps.

The moaning sound was back. It was closer this time, however. It sounded like it was coming from above her and the words seemed slightly clearer than before. Cara could pick up on a few of the words the voice said.

"Appreciate.... if y'hadn't.... killed me..."

The fog in Cara's world was becoming more dense as the fear was overtaking her. It was Joey. He had come back. And now he was going to get his revenge for making him disappear.

She didn't want to die, but she was sure Joey didn't care.
---

Her entire body was shaking forcefully. Small whimpers escaped her mouth and tears slid down her tanned cheeks.

The only upside to the whole ordeal was that Cara was responsive. Even if it was for the worse.

Maxie hesitated as Cara made a whimpering noise. Quite clearly she wasn't all there... and she didn't know what could make her snap out of it. Obviously she was in no state of mind to protect herself, and Maxie was loath to leave her like this after she had saved her life. But... Maxie didn't want to get into a group. Didn't like it last time, wouldn't like it this time, and with Cara like she was, she'd just be a load. Maxie didn't know whether to stay or go... was it good that her being there was causing her to respond? Or was that just making it worse?

Rrgh. When did things get so complicated?

"Listen girl. I don't wanna hurt ya or anything... I don't really know what state you're in, so I'll just sit over here 'till ya wanna talk. 'Kay?"

Maxie shifted away a little, putting one hand on the mauser on the floor. Just in case. Not that she though Cara would attack her, but she didn't want some creep sneaking up and stealing it. Then they'd both be screwed. This was difficult, much too difficult. She didn't want somebody else relying on her, yet at the same time, it struck a very bad chord with Maxie to just leave somebody lying around in this state... especially given that without Cara, Joey might have killed her.

Fuck's sake.

Why wouldn't he leave?

That's all she wanted. She thought she had gotten rid of him earlier, but now he was back and she couldn't get rid of him.

The fog was extraordinarily thick by this point and wherever Cara was; it was dark. It was pitch black all around her, but whenever she looked at body parts, they almost resonated light. It was almost as if...

Wait. Was she dead? Had Joey already taken his revenge and murdered her? But... she hadn't felt anything. Nothing at all.

She was safe in that world though, so she couldn't be dead. Joey McHaimond couldn't hurt her here. There was no way he could intrude into her world.
---

Cara's limp, trembling body still lay on the damp ground. Her open eyes seemed to stared at nothing, as if they were empty

Whimpers still sounded through the area. Sad whimpers that made her sound like she was in pain, but it was quite the opposite. She was physically healthy.

Emotionally and mentally healthy were two different stories...

Maxie sighed, thinking on the problem. She needed to get out of here, but didn't want to just leave Cara in this catatonic state. It looked as though she was going to saddled with a bit of deadweight for the time being. It just depended on how long it was going to take Cara to snap out of it.

She went back over to Cara and took her by the arm, gently manouvering her to her feet. Maxie stayed close by in case she suddenly collapsed again. It was a distinct possibility, although Maxie guessed that she'd be able to stand under her own power at least.

Maxie hesitated over the mauser, still on the floor, but in the end decided that if they were to have protection, she'd rather be holding the gun than a girl who was entirely dead to the world. If she recovered from it later Maxie would be perfectly willing to give it her back. She walked back over to Cara, gun in hand, and looped the other girl's arm over her head to support her at the shoulders.

"C'mon then," Maxie murmured to her. "Let's get gone,"

She was floating now. The dark, foggy scenery she was in had changed into the wide sky. From the dark gray looks of it, it seemed as though it was about to storm. It was refreshing, nonetheless.

---

Cara wobbled a bit, but the minute Maxie supported her she was good to go. Her footsteps were clunky and clumsy, but it was good enough. She could walk and that's all that mattered.

(Cara Scholte continued elsewhere)
