Playing Macgyver

Overlooked by large cliffs to the north and surrounded by tall trees to the south, the lagoon was formed ages ago when a tsunami hit the island. Since then, it's become an untouched beauty of the island... but be mindful of the lagoon's beautiful waters. You never know who might sneak up from behind and drown you in them.

( Continued from The Continuing Story of Bungalow Red)

Shameeca took out her map and grabbed her flashlight. The thick understory made it hard to see from whatever light was coming through. She needed to find some stones to put a fine tip on the end of her toothbrush because the program had dealt her the most pathetic and perverted weapon: a double sided dildo. Shameeca noticed that the places where she could find them, the babbling brook and the northern coast were danger zones.

"Damnit! Why this gotta be all complicated and shit?" she said to herself. She decided to try the next best place, the Lagoon. She figured many people might have gone to the quarry or the caves, but nothing makes stones smoother than water hitting them. Although the Lagoon was not the coast, she figured it was her only option at the moment.

Eventually Shameeca stumbled upon the Lagoon. She looked around and thought this sight was almost too pristine to be in such a mess like SOTF. She figured, that she would go to the water nearest to the ocean, find stones and run back into the brush. It appeared to be an easy spot to be noticed, and she did not want to chance it. Shameeca did just that, she ran up to the little pool, grabed a handful of stones, and then ran back into the denser part of the Lagoon. The immediately took out the toothbrush and got to work. She worked for about 20 minutes on the sharpening process. Shameeca wanted to make it correct and didn't care how long it took, just so that it was perfect. Eventually she ended up with a long sharp tip. She poked the end of it, and it almost pierced her. She ran her finger up and down the sides of the "blade" and was satisfied.

"Thank you culinary programs." Shameeca said. She took the tape out from her scrapbooking supplies, but noticed that it would make a shitty adhesion to the dildo and the toothbrush. She rummaged through her SOTF pack and smacked her head. Of course! The first aid kit had tape and bandages to dress wounds. She grabbed the tape inside the kit, and quickly wrapped the toothbrush to the end of the dildo and made a spear/dagger almost. Shameeca held up her makeshift creation and smiled to herself:

"Chicago juvenile halls taught me well!"

She decided to crawl underneath some foliage and wait out. She was enjoying the view, but did not want to leave since she had already gotten there. Besides, she could use a breather.

(Continued from Nervous Solitude)

Raven Lawrence stepped out of the trees and into the beautiful region surrounding the lagoon. Raindrops falling on the surface of the water formed an endless design that seemed to hypnotize the person who gazed into it for too long, and the cliffs in the background formed a pleasant backdrop. He never would have guessed that the waters of the lagoon were tainted with blood, just like everything else on this island.

Raven was glad that nobody seemed to be around. After his previous encounter, it was obvious that he needed to rethink how he was going to approach the game. He needed a plan. He needed a weapon. To supplement the fork, he'd managed to pick up a somewhat sturdy branch as he'd traveled through the jungle to his new location. It wasn't much of a weapon, but it was better than nothing.

He wandered down to the edge of the lagoon. Was this place secure enough? He knew that he would have to move eventually, but for now he allowed himself to lower his guard a little as he attempted to figure everything out.

Plastic swords suck anyway, who would buy them?

Joseph walked along the edge of the forest, almost crouched in some vain attempt to remain unseen, despite the morning light that clearly revealed him to anyone who happened to look. His deliberate steps, an odd phenomenon, did nothing to quiet the foliage underneath his feet, but he seemed not to notice.

Wasn't that guy a terrorist? No wonder. They would support the evil companies supplying the public with substandard plastic weaponry. The worst kind of evil.

He crunched along, remembering back to when he woke up in the forest in the first place, some weird plastic sword laying around nearby. That was hardly a weapon. It was so much more trouble then it was worth that he tossed it aside and left. Since then, he had relied on hiding and running away for all the fighting he encountered, and he encountered a surprising amount. It was working well for him, too; several days and no one had even threatened him or anything. Partially because they had all been fighting at the time, but mostly because Joe was a master of stealth. Oh yeah.

That's why I buy all my weapons in metal. Or else the terrorists have already wo-People.

There was indeed someone walking into sight, standing around the lagoon Joe had just stumbled upon himself. People were mixed signs. On the one hand, everyone Joe had seen so far was fighting. Bullets, swords, all of it not good for the vital organs. But this man had no bullets and swords flying about. Joe stood up straight and...quickly blanked, realizing he had no plan for meeting with anyone still nice. So he stared, and did nothing else, waiting for something to happen.

(B102 start. Woot.)

Raven turned away from the lagoon to survey the surrounding area. He didn't think that anybody was in the area, but even so he felt too exposed standing out in the open. He thought that he saw some movement off in the trees, but couldn't tell for sure. It was probably just the rain.

He returned back to the trees, since they provided slightly better cover than nothing. Actual shelter was much harder to find, and Raven began to consider the fact that he might have to build his own. He mostly remembered how to build a lean-to shelter from a survival book he had (and what he couldn't remember, it couldn't be that hard to figure out the rest on his own). He was hesitant, however, because he knew that something like that would be a dead giveaway that somebody was living there. He wasn't very confident in his ability to hide it from the casual observer. The books he had read had always talked about 'survival', but they never seemed to cover what you should do if somebody is hunting you. Maybe he would point it out to someone if he somehow got out of this alive. In the meantime, he decided to go without a shelter. He was already soaked from trudging through the jungle in the middle of a downpour, so what difference could a little more water make?

He hoped the rain would let up soon.

A nearby tree seemed to be doing much better at keeping off the rain than the other trees in the region, so Raven chose that one to rest under. As he sat down against it, he saw movement again. It was definitely more prominent than the motion of the branches in the wind and rain. Someone was probably watching him.

Grumbling to himself about how it seemed that someone just had to show up the minute he found a relatively good place to rest, Raven got up to check it out. If it was another person with a gun, he might as well encounter them directly to determine whether or not they were hostile instead trying to play another game of cat and mouse. He made sure that his branch was securely in his hand and stepped forward into the foliage.

It was overcast, and being in the middle of some trees only served to obscure the other guy. He was advancing real carefully, and he had something in his hand. Something weapon like. Oh no. Now it was dangerous.

"I'm sorry."

No, that wasn't any good. What else could he do?

He then jumped into the air a few inches, kicking, and landed in a kung fu pose with an overexaggerated "Hwah!". If the other guy had a sword, he could just disarm him. Right? How did disarming go again?

Suddenly standing normally again, he reached into his pack and pulled out a book, flipping through to find anything about disarming someone with a sword. He scanned through the novel as fast as he could, but no wait, he could miss it that way. So he went back to the beginning and read a little slower. Oh, here it was.

Crunch. The other guy was getting closer. Joe shoved the book back into his bag and lashed out in a panic, attempting to mimic the instructions. Swinging his arms around, he hit nothing but air, and fell to the ground, realizing that the other guy was not quite in disarming range.

"I'm sorry." he repeated, now in no position to fight. "Again." He covered his face with his arms. "Pleasedon'tkillme" he pleaded in fast forward.

Raven had been prepared to defend himself in the event that he found a hostile student hiding in the bushes. Nothing, though, could keep him from being caught off guard by this maniac. Luckily, he didn't seem to be much of an actual threat.

"Please don't kill me,"

Yes, that's right. Raven had the advantages in this situation. He could decide whether or not this other boy lived or died. He tightened his grip on the branch... but what would he gain from killing this incarnation of incompetence? The boy had no weapons that Raven could see, and he certainly wasn't a threat to anybody as long as he didn't let his guard down. Compared to the fact that Raven couldn't afford to be known as a player until he found a decent weapon, killing this boy was out of the question. When the time came, he would make his first kill and begin the game as a serious competitor, but until then he should lie low.

That didn't mean the boy was completely useless, though. He had exactly what Raven needed. Information. Hiding out in a cave for the better part of a week meant that Raven was at a severe disadvantage when compared to the rest of the students (he probably should have been taking notes during the announcements, but it was too late to start worrying about that). He needed to know things. Who to trust, who to avoid. While most of the trustworthy people were probably dead by now, there would be some people to avoid like the plague until he was better prepared.

"You there," he annnounced. Even if he wasn't going to kill anybody yet, the other boy didn't know that, so he may as well establish himself as the person in control of the situation. "What have you been doing since the game started?"

What was she doing? Sitting here under some bushes with a modified dildo/toothbrush to defend herself with. Listening to the other two guys in the distance, she realised that she would have to get out of here and find somewhere else that would be safer. But she had survived this long, so she was doing better than most people. Afterall, the black girl always got killed first in the horror films that she had watched on late-night tv, unless they were a singer or something, then they would bite it right at the end after saving their friends, who mostly tended to be white and virginial. God, Hollywood endings were a bitch. Rubbing her eyes as her contacts started to rub again, she looked outwards into the distance. Maybe if she stayed here for a while, she would be missed by everyone till the end....

No, Shameeca needed to get out and get a better weapon or at least some people around her to make sure she wouldn't go mad. Not that they wouldn't attack her or something, oh god what if they attacked me? Let's face it, Shameeca wasn't the most popular girl around, but she wasn't no recluse. No, she would just have to find someone who could help her. And the guy who was pleading for his life in the distance wouldn't be much help. No, she needed to get out of this place, somewhere safer. Maybe she could find something a bit better to protect herself with. Her dildo-shank wouldn't do her no good, unless the person laughed themselves to death when they saw it. A little bit ashamed and paranoid (but honestly who wasn't?), Shameeca slowly started to move away, her free hand clutched around the ring on her neck, the one thing that was always going to be a constant in her life.

*Snap"

The twig snapping underneath her foot freaked her out a bit and she started running off into the foliage, trying to get some distance away from the two guys in the cave. Hopefully one of them wouldn't have a gun to mow her down with in the distance. Her breath came out in short ragged gasps as she moved on, her bag banging at her side where she was carrying it.

"You there!"

Mystery guy had slowed his advance before yelling out to Joe, and he took the opportunity to scramble to his feet. Despite the suspicious approach, the guy was still talking. Maybe he was a good guy?

"What have you been doing since the game started?"

Joe's brain still running at high speed and contradicting itself alot, Joe blurted out the first thing in his mind. "Killing people!" he yelled back. Um...that was an interesting lie, but ok. That would work. He settled back into the kung fu pose. "They gave me a sword!" Technically true.

Danya's voice made it's entrance as the speakers squealed into life in that annoying loudspeaker fashion. Joe never paid much attention to the announcements. While Danya began to ramble, Joe noticed someone running away. "Hey! Where's he going?" He made sure to yell loud enough for the other guy to hear, and pointed for good measure. Between the two distractions, he was positive mystery guy wouldn't be paying attention. He sprinted forward, and jumped forward to tackle the guy.

"Good morning, children! I think it's been a long night for all of us..."

Everything seemed to happen at once. The sudden appearance (and disappearance) of one of their classmates a short distance away, Danya's morning announcement... the classmate who had run away would have probably been a much better source of weapons or supplies than Raven's current target, and likewise he could gain more reliable information by listening to the terrorists than by interrogating people at random. Unfortunately, Raven was able to take advantage of neither of these opportunities, because the other boy had chosen that moment to attack.

The tackle took him completely by surprise and knocked him to the ground. Raven managed to free himself and get to his feet, but lost his branch in the process. They were both unarmed now, and the other boy looked like he knew more about fighting.

"...continuing to destroy cameras will result in more deaths. Believe it. Moving along to the kills..."

There really wasn't any point in avoiding a fight anymore, was there? If anybody asked, he could honestly claim self-defense, and he would still have a whole day before his name appeared on the announcements, anyway. He reached into his pocket and brought out his fork, holding it in what he hoped would be a useful manner. A few more seconds to regain his breath after being knocked to the ground...

"...better as Blood Boy! Boy, this was sure an exciting moment in SOTF history. Picture, if you will..."

No point in delaying it further. Gripping his fork tightly in his right hand, Raven ran at his enemy and thrust his improvised weapon as best he could.

The tackle connected, and Joe brought Raven down to the ground with a loud thud. Pushing up, he wound back a fist to punch down, but got a swift kick to the stomach and fell backwards. Raven got up and pulled out...a fork? Joe grinned. "A fo-" is as far as he got before Raven rushed forward and stabbed Joe in the arm.

His sentence was finished with "AAAAAAAAAAAUGH" as Joe stumbled and fell on his hands and knees with the silverware still in his arm, blood leaking out and staining his clothes. He wrapped his hand around the fork and pulled it out, sending another spike of pain through his arm and resulting in another scream. With only revenge in mind, Joe pushed his good shoulder into Raven, and moved to pull the fork out of his hand.

The two students struggled for control of the fork. Raven was taller than the other boy, but not as well built, so in a contest of strength he would eventually lose. Reason told him that he should get out while it was still possible, that the fork wasn't worth risking a fight over and that he wait until he found a battle that he was reasonably sure that he could win.

On the other hand, Raven had some newfound respect for his fork, and didn't really feel like parting with it just yet if it could be avoided. His enemy was down to having one good arm. He could hold out and win...or so he thought. Raven wasn't a martialist, so he wasn't particularly aware of how concepts such as leverage, grip, and stance could aid or hinder someone in disarming or grappling. Whether or not Joe knew these things was debatable, but through knowledge, intuition, or simple luck, Joe had those things on his side. He would win a prolonged battle for possesion of the utensil.

"...was going on, it was time for Trish McCarroll to get some good ole' revenge for her buddy Jake's death. She definitely didn't waste any time tearing Jeff Thorne apart..."

If he could attack his enemy's wound, it might give him the momentary edge he needed. It wasn't going to happen with the way they were positioned. It was an unwinnable battle. In a last-ditch attempt to regain control of the weapon, Raven gripped it with both hands and pulled.

Joe gritted his teeth, adrenaline dulling the pain in his wound. He aimed to stomp on Raven's leg, looking for some immediate advantage, but missed as Raven put all his weight into pulling the silverware out of Joe's grasp. The added force had Joe stumbled forward, but he remained upright and with a hold on the fork.

"...her second kill of the day afterward, shooting Sloan..."

Joe had a hard time thinking through Danya's voice. Every day, rambling on. Like someone actually gave a crap what he had to say. Ugh. In his distraction, Joe's grip on the fork loosened and it began to slip out of his grasp. He caught it just as Raven was about to get it back...and then had an idea. He let go, hoping Raven would fall over. From there, Joe would have this in the bag.

Raven stumbled backward when Joe suddenly stopped resisting. He fought to keep his balance, just barely managing to keep himself from falling over. He had the weapon, so he might still be able to win the fight.

"...had a very unfortunate run-in with one of the old booby traps in the jungle and bled to death, but not before..."

Instead of attacking, Raven turned and ran. Even if he won the fight, he doubted that he could beat the other boy to the point that killing him with a fork would be possible. He needed to pick a new target, one where he could acquire a weapon in the process. A target that would matter.

"...rest of these deaths..."

Was he being followed? Raven wasn't a very fast sprinter, so if the other boy wanted to continue the fight, it wouldn't be that hard to catch up.

Kicking at the dirt as his plan failed, Joe started to run to catch up to Raven, but his arm wound was getting more painful by the minute and Raven still had more weapons then he did. He slowed to a stop, watching him run off, then turned around and half-ran a ways the other way, back under the treeline, where it was less wet. He dropped his bag to the ground, and started to shuffle through it's contents until he found the first aid kit. He kept an eye on the distance - he thought he put enough distance to lose Raven, but he could pop up at any second. With more stabbing.

He cracked open the box and looked at the contents...which didn't look familiar at all. There was...some jars of stuff, a needle, some other stuff he didn't recognize. Thumbing through the box, he found "bandages". He picked the supposed bandages up; it was a roll of cloth. And certainly not sticky. He put it back into the box, mumbling "What do they expect me to do with bandages that don't stick?". Closing the kit and stuffing it into his bag again, he picked himself up and left. Every moment felt like it would bring Crazy Fork Guy around the nearest corner. Joe didn't want to be there when that actually happened.

Raven managed to get away from his pursuer with only a little bit of dificulty. Now, if only he could wait until the other boy dropped his guard again...

"...lagoon, airfield, and jailhouse will be going dangerzone..."

I guess waiting is out of the question, then. The short amount of time they had wouldn't be long enough to finish off his target, who was probably leaving the area by now. Raven started to head back to where he had left his pack... but decided shortly afterward that it was too dangerous to head back in a direction that he knew there was a hostile student waiting. He had his map, compass and flashlight with him, and could probably survive without a first aid kit for a little while.

The falling rain was starting to let up. People would be emerging from their shelters, shifting from danger zones to safe areas... where to go next? Raven continued considering this as he walked off into the surrounding jungle.
