Musing

Spotting the beach in a series are deep, roped-off caves, some traversable on foot and others requiring strong swimming skills or the aid of a canoe. Any light source aside from natural pockets in the rock went out years ago, however, making it very easy for someone to lose their way in the craggy labyrinth, not to mention the threat of slipping into the deep, black water.

((Veronica McDonald continued from Metal Skeletons and Concrete Ruins))

The sudden realization that your classmates are dead and you'd die too really dampens a girl's mood. Veronica felt emotionally exhausted and really didn't want to encounter other people. Instead, she wandered off in a daze, hoping to find someplace to hole up until she managed to gather herself. Soon enough Veronica found herself inside a small, dark cave.

Good enough, she sighed. The girl sat down and used her pack as a cushion. She had the tire iron in her hand, partly to give her hands something to do. She mostly held it so she could enter a fight in a pinch.

She turned the bent metal strip around in her hands. This belonged to a previous winner of the game. J.R. Rizzolo. She vaguely remembered the name on the news as a child, but she never paid attention to it. Veronica only caught snips and pieces of the story. The only thing she knew was that he had killed somebody and was killed. Perhaps the former was done with the tire iron itself. She shuddered as she realized that she was holding something that had ended a life. Normally she would've cast it off, but it was her only defense against her classmates.

And casting off a weapon in this game is suicide.

In Hawaiian, Aloha means "Hello" and "Goodbye," the latter of which is appropriate considering how fast his V6 cast died

Veronica wasn't exactly sure how long she stayed in the cave, but it was at least a full day.

The announcements came on, and told her the list of the departed and those who made them depart. Mara and Miranda were on the list of those who departed others, and others Veronica knew from track and classes. It made her sickened and worried that more people were dying. Even worse that the cave she was sitting in was a danger zone.

She sat dumbfounded for a moment before her collar began beeping. She then jumped up, grabbed her bag, and ran.
