Maria Prescott

NPCs (non-player characters) go here. This section is for characters who will not be participating in the game, including teachers and school administration. To encourage consistency, the staff have created a number of ready-made teachers, all of whom are available for free handler use unless stated otherwise. Please link any appearances these staff make in threads by replying to their topics. For this pregame, any additional NPCs will require staff approval on a case-by-case basis. Please contact staff if you wish to create any NPCs, and note that we will generally be trying to keep their numbers slim; pregame is, first and foremost, about the students.

Maria Prescott

Name: Maria Prescott
Position: English Teacher
Gender: Female
Age: 28

Appearance: Between her relative youth, petite 5'4 and 112 lbs. runner's build, and casual sense of style, Ms. Prescott is occasionally mistaken for a student rather than a teacher. She is an Asian-American woman with green eyes, short, brown hair in a well-maintained undercut, and a soft, tanned complexion. She rarely wears make-up or jewelry of any sort, and on most days can be seen wearing some combination of business casual slacks or jeans, a nice button up flannel shirt, and heeled boots.

Biography/Personality: Ms. Prescott was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee and spent most of her adolescence trying to escape it due to the state at large's conservative leanings. As soon as she graduated high school she left for California to attend UCLA, though homesickness soon led her to question her decision. By the time she received her teaching degree she was inspired to be the change she wanted to see and returned home with the aim of providing a better teaching environment than she grew up in.

Ms. Prescott has a complicated reputation among the student body. While many who enjoy English and literature find her to be a very easy going and encouraging teacher, those who are less inclined can find her high level of involvement intimidating. Her constant questions and push for deeper engagement can also prove frustrating for students who are already behind. While she wishes to improve her methods to better support those who are uninterested or struggling with the material, her attempts have mixed success. Given how similar she often appears to her students in appearance and mannerisms, it is also sometimes a struggle for her to be taken seriously by both her classes and other faculty members. Despite this she maintains a positive outlook and does her best to make her tutelage as welcoming as she can.
"Art enriches the community, Steve, no less than a pulsing fire hose, or a fireman beating down a blazing door. So what if we're drawing a nude man? So what if all we ever draw is a nude man, or the same nude man over and over in all sorts of provocative positions? Context, not content! Process, not subject! Don't be so gauche, Steve, it's beneath you."
