Located on the second floor of the art block, the art rooms are two large square rooms joined together by a computer room with equipment to allow students to edit photos or create digital art. The art rooms themselves feature groups of four desks with an adjustable service to allow for more comfort when students are drawing. There are also easels easily accessible in storage closets behind the teachers' desks in each room. Art students are allowed to come and go as they please to work on any projects or assignments they have, as the art department value and stress the importance of independent learning.

Demetri fucking loved this song, called 'The Obituaries', by The Menzingers. He piped it in right through his earbuds while he sat in a corner of the art room, one without too many other folks. Like, he'd describe it as one of those sort of inspiring songs. The guitar had a quality about it. Words that sprung to mind were, like, bright and echo-y. Kinda cliche, he guessed. Best part was this like... marching band type of chorus, where the lead guitar had a nice melody. Nice? He didn't know how else to describe it, but it was cool, worthy of a couple of head bangs in the middle of class as his eyes violently jerked around, focusing on nothing in particular.

'I will fuck this up... ,' he lip synched with little motions of his lips.

'I fu-cking know it.' And he made a few chords in the air right in front of his chest. Big up and downs of his hands. A-drums-C#m-drums-D-drums-F#5. Demetri supposed there was a way to articulate that progression with, like, more emotion. In a way that captured the energy and physical-ness of each sweep of his hands producing an imaginary sound. But it was impractical and unneeded. It wasn't even real sound.

He looked up from his canvas, which he'd decorated with a bunch of jagged-cut fragments of photos he'd taken before. He rubbed a hand a bit at his jawline, because it itched, because he'd managed to nick himself with a razor yet again. Then, he scanned the room. And while he was scanning the room, he saw her. Her being Aleksandra Pruidus.

Aleksandra Pruidus was a crush of his. He didn't know what it was. He liked tall girls. Or he liked her deep voice. Or he liked her unusual hair. He just liked her something.

The intense movements of her hand. Her strong wrists. He couldn't even begin to describe the things she was piling up on her canvas. She made doing art look like a game of soccer.

And that was a good ass metaphor and one he'd have to remember. Later. Right now he was feeling like doing something besides just staying in a corner and not talking. Aleksandra was intimidating. She was probably way too strong and way too out of his league. Like, he was pretty sure she wasn't even the quiet type, it didn't even make sense given how intense she looked. She probably had a ton of friends and just stayed quiet and intimidating in classes where he was because she wanted him to not talk to her. Made way too much sense. But he figured there was no harm in at least conversing a little.

Like, he was legitimately interested in the work she was producing this period. And other dudes who hit home runs with the ladies liked to say it was better to lead with common interests. They would also say stuff like: strong spine to emphasize masculine height, a bit of clean-smelling cologne... and what was clean smelling, even? Bathrooms were clean, kitchens were clean, so was there some kinda Lysol cologne Demetri had missed the memo on?

Demetri stood up. Next, hovered kinda near Aleksandra. Like, in that area near her but not too near her that was carefully picked to be respectful. Off to one side, as he scanned her art. Scanned her too, but nervously tried to keep the leering to a minimum.

"Hey, Aleks. Liking the, uh, art."

So, in the end he stared at her boobs way too much while standing with an awkward nervous leg shaking and a hunch and smelling vaguely like dried sweat and the grass from his morning dicking around on the soccer field.

(Aleksandra Prudius continued from life observes itself)

Aleksandra liked surrealist art.  Surrealist painting, to be more specific.  She liked the freedom to create whatever wanted to emerge from her mind, no matter how shapeless or formless it might be.  In nearly every other field she was immersed in, she desired order and routine.  Pottery had to be made a certain way.  Her sketches had to look just right.  The basketball had to go through the hoop.  All of them had specific patterns that had to be followed.  Her painting was different, though.  There was no specific goal or requirement that she had to reach, but she still had total control, possibly more than she had in any of her other hobbies.  No, definitely more.

This was her second class period working on this specific piece.  All of the work she had done yesterday had dried, and new wet strokes were joining at a fast pace.  Even though there was no set form for her piece, Aleksandra still put a lot of thought into where her brush would go next.  She didn't want a lot of overlapping strokes since she thought it would make the picture look too messy.  Another reason was that she didn't want to paint over the work she had already done.  If she would just cover up her previous work with more paint, then what would be the point of the initial design she had drawn in the first place?  It didn't quite seem fair.

She made another stroke, threading between and around previous lines.  She wasn't focusing on making shapes.  Rather, she was just working with strokes.  Long strokes, short strokes, curvy strokes, and wavy strokes.  It was a vast collage of lines of various colors, scattered and clustered across the canvas.  She couldn't quite make up her mind as to what they looked like?  Smoke?  Snakes?  Dragons?  Well, they would have to be really thin dragons, but she had seen thin dragons before.

Huh?

Oh, someone was talking to her.  She turned her head to the side to see who it was.  She recognized Demetri, since she had a few classes with him.  She didn't really know him, though.  Still, he liked her art, and that was nice.

"Thanks.  I want to finish it by the end of the week."

Hmm, weird.  Demetri was kind of looking down, and not really at her canvas.  She tried to get his attention back with a question.

"What do you think it looks like?"

Holy shit to be honest Demetri hadn't actually expected her to respond. He kept cool, 'course. Wasn't going to deny the brief moment of blank 'tard brain he'd had to puzzle through, until he could think again.

Fuck, of course she'd had to ask that.

Like, Demetri was looking at the many waves and squiggles she was painting with expert repetition onto the canvas... He didn't see shit. Squiggles were squiggles, lines were lines. A lot of different colors, like reds and blues and greens and lighter reds and darker blue and lighter greens and darker reds. There was a word for this shit, right? Color theory. Color wheels. Hues and saturation and... yeah. He could talk about that, maybe? Like he knew shit about that, but he could probably fake his way through it. No wait, what about the shapes. Maybe he could see, like, a face or a landmark or Jesus somewhere in the pileup that Aleks had on her canvas. But it was just a bundle of random shapes. In the end Demetri could only squint at it from different angles and see... the same thing just with different angles.

He pulled out the earbuds though. That was at least being all polite and gentleman and all that good shit. The earbuds looped over one finger and dangled towards the ground.

"Well damn," he whistled through lips slightly sealed up from nervousness. "Long time to keep."

"Well the colors are like, you know. A storm. Hurricane. Get what I'm going at?"

Wait, yeah. He'd go with that. It was like... chaos given form. Genius. Something he could appreciate, at least. And if he could appreciate it, he could talk about it without Aleks gunning him down on the spot like the cuck he was.

"Hah. Puerto Rico beware."

"Hurricane?"

Hmm.  That was something that Aleksandra hadn't considered when she was making her piece.  With so many strokes of varying sizes across the canvas, she supposed that it could be something very large and dramatic, like a storm.  Maybe the streaks represented rain, or wind, or rain blowing in a strong wind.  She had seen that on TV during reports of hurricanes.  It was pretty frightening stuff.  She looked at her canvas for a while longer, her eyes pouring over it as she let every detail soak in while she tried to see it from another point of view.

... No, she didn't really like that idea.  She didn't like hurricanes.  She had never had to deal with one, at least not at anything near full strength thanks to the geographical location of Chattanooga.  Even so, she knew all about how destructive and terrifying they were.  It wasn't the kind of thing that she liked to think about when she was busy painting, and it certainly wasn't something that she would go out of her way to immortalize in her art.  This was a time for her to relax and enjoy herself, not think about something that stressed her out.  And hurricanes definitely fell into the latter category, especially after the previous year's season, as Demetri's quick comment about Puerto Rico reminded her.

The blunt end of the brush tapped against Aleksandra's chin as she briefly shook her head in the direction of her painting.  She couldn't see Demetri's interpretation of her painting at all.  She wondered how he came to it in the first place, actually.  Her appraisal followed that line of thinking, although it was spoken in the direction of the canvas rather than Demetri.

"... I don't see it."

Honestly he was still half stuck on the whole 'she actually responded without killing me' part. That was a pretty new feeling. Put some kinda emotion in his suddenly weird-feeling chest that he couldn't quite describe.

The next feeling was familiar though. Exasperation, it was. At himself.

Because of course he said something stupid and of course it was already over before it had started. Demetri was about ready to turn tail and depart there and then, without so much as an exit plan, but something he couldn't guess at kept him standing there and kept him opening his big ass mouth.

"Well, uh." He turned his head to one side, so it... hung over his shoulder, or something like that. Kind of near kind of far. Mathematical-ass angle. "..." The silence was because he was processing shit. Trying to work out the words in his head until he had something that wasn't 'tard brain sounding, and as it turned out it was a bit of a challenge. And he didn't have the time for that challenge, and he was coming off like a moron anyways, and at some point well five something seconds had passed. But Demetri kept trying to look like he was actually trying to see something that pretty much wasn't there.

"... Nah, you're right." Better to play it safe, he figured out at the last possible second. Laggard brain, pretty much. But the 'cuck self' option was always the easy way out... Like, the lame and pathetic way out. But whoops, he'd kind of already started doing it that way. He wouldn't back out now even if he could have, even if like. His mouth wasn't so fast and mumble-y.

"I think I was just looking at it wrong. Like, you know. The fluid you've got there is way calmer than a storm. Like a still lake, maybe..." Maybe what.

Maybe. Maybe what?

... He had nothing. "Like, you know." He made a curt hand gesture and it was small and constrained to a little spot of air in front of him.

Huh.  A lake.  Aleksandra could sort of see that.  All the floating lines could be the ripples of the lake, the colors coming from the lights reflecting off the water's surface.  Or maybe the colors were reflections of its surroundings.  Maybe it was spring, or fall, and the world was changing color around it.  That made sense.  Or maybe it wasn't a lake at all.  Maybe it wasn't really anything, just a collection of strokes that took whatever form she thought she saw when she looked at it at that moment.  That made sense too.

"That's nice."  She mused aloud at her work.

Whatever it was, she liked it.  She's probably like it more when it was finished.

She looked at her palette, trying to figure out which color she should use next.  She used red for her last stroke, so she didn't want to use it again so soon.  Should she use another warm color, or switch over to a cooler color?  She hadn't really been using any pattern other then trying not to use one color too much over the others.  She examined the choices before her for a bit before remembering that Demetri was still there.  She looked past her shoulder at him and asked an appropriately topical question.

"Are you painting something too?"

It was 'nice', she said. God, he'd take it. A single even vaguely friendly comment from a pretty girl was like... huge, big, something along the lines of...

> talk to girl
> she says she thinks your opinions arent bullshit
> ultimate validation never before experienced

... Yeah, that was about right. Probably worthy of a copypaste or several.

She was looking at it. So yeah, obviously he was looking at it too. He'd been doing a lot of looking at the damn painting over the past thirty seconds or so, he swore he'd be able to describe it in a cop lineup or something. Still, he glared at it more. Like the meaning would become anymore obvious if he continued to trace the squiggles back and forth over and over, in that abstract space in his head people called 'minds eye' or whatever.

Some long ass time later when Demetri didn't even remember what it was he was doing, Aleks was looking at him. Oh, he liked that for sure. Yep. Being sort-of noticed twice (!) in the span of a minute by someone you're literally standing next to. Score.

Demetri nodded and walked, crossed the row between the desks, the row that had separated them. Turned his own canvas around. Simply put, it was a collage of photos. Like... square-ish in frame? Kind of did a time lapse thing where he put photos of himself and his sister younger to older? And he'd put a lot of blur on the edges of the photos, and stuff like that. The colors were... there were a lot of them. He'd picked different types of photos to stick together from all sorts of sources: like, birthday parties, house photos. Selfies and stuff. He'd jammed them together, carefully, spending a lot of time on the specific cuts of his scissors and stuff. Had to get the angles right, all that.

"It's not bad. I guess. Teach said I need to use my, like, composition better. Whatever that means." Was this the part where he, just... asked a question?

"... What do you think? Your opinion's worth a lot and all, what with, like. All the talent."

Seriously, what the hell was he doing?

Aleksandra set her brush down next to her palette and followed Demetri to his canvas.  She was pretty interested in seeing what he was making.  She wasn't really sure what kind of art he did, actually.  She wasn't sure whether he was into painting, drawing, or something else.  The only clue she had as of that moment was that it involved a canvas, which took her right back to her original guesses of painting and drawing.  Her guess was leaning a little more towards painting, since he had asked her about her own painting.  It seemed to make sense, anyway.

Demetri revealed his work, and Aleks discovered that both of her guesses were incorrect.  He had a collage of photographs arranged on his canvas, all of them featuring a blond-headed boy in various environments and phases of life.  It didn't take her a very long time to deduce the subject of these pictures, but she still stared at the canvas a fair while just to make sure.  And when Demetri asked for her opinion, the first words out of her mouth did not actually have anything to do with the quality of the piece, but rather the thought that was already on her mind at the moment.

"Are all of these pictures of you?"

A girl actually following him, holy shit... Okay, yeah, it was just him being pathetic and incel like he always was, this really wasn't even sort of a big deal, but he couldn't help being so fucked up that any little bit of attention from the fairer sex made him feel like he was just the best. ... Fairer sex, huh? More like un-fairer sex.

He'd been sweating bullets while she'd been standing off to his side, silently staring. Like he wasn't sure what she'd even say, but the silence had seemed to imply it'd be something bad, ego-crushing.

Instead it was totally off base. But Aleks could have asked if he'd used accumulated toe jam to make the photos or something, and he'd have considered it a victory... well, maybe if it hadn't been one of those secret insult-type jabs where it was only an insult if you read into it the right way. Demetri was pretty sure this wasn't one of those things...

... Yeah, pretty sure.

"Nah. Just this one's me." Demetri gestured. At the girl who was his sister in each photo.

It was a joke, was the thing. Demetri wasn't that much of a tryhard goth-looking dork in real life, he was pretty sure.

Hmm.  Looked like Demetri had always had curly hair.  Same color, too.  Pictures looked a little fuzzy around the edges, though.  Was that a deliberate choice?  It didn't really distort the subject of the pictures, but it was still pretty noticeable, or maybe it was only slightly noticeable and she was paying too much attention to it.  It was kind of hard to tell when she only had her own perspective to judge by.

Honestly, Aleksandra wasn't really sure if she was the right person to be consulting about this.  She didn't really know photography very well at all.  The last encounter she had with the art was when she had accidentally messed up that girl's picture on 34th Street that one evening.  She still felt kind of bad about that, actually.  She hoped that girl managed to get her picture somehow.  She'd hate to think that she might have ruined her plans for good.

Wait, Demetri was looking at her.  Oh no, did she lose track of the conversation?  She was thinking about the setup of his photographs, then she kind of transitioned to photographs in general, which led her to thinking about that evening on 34th Street.  Her mind had wandered away from the topic at hand, and now she wasn't quite sure what to say.  He had wanted criticism, right?  Or advice?  Unfortunate that it wasn't in a field that she was more comfortable with, but since he was asking, she figured that the least she could do was try to say something constructive.

"So, um..."  She eyeballed the canvas for another moment while she tried to come up with a good comment.  "What's the theme?"  Wait, was that good enough?  She hastily added a follow-up statement.  "For the piece as a whole, I mean."

Each second that passed by, it felt more and more that Demetri's life had become some sort of bad punchline. Or, become the shitty .gif where some dude dumbasses out right at the end. It was like, fuck, when he'd wanted to look a girl deep in the eyes for a long and deep moment this isn't what he'd had in mind.

"The theme. Huh."

What was the theme? Shit, because, what had happened was that Mr. Clarke had liked to talk in his lectures about the 'inherent message that symbols impart when integrated into an artistic expression'. Nothing wrong with Mr. Clarke himself, the dude was beyond cool and it was easy to excuse absences with him. But Demetri had always wondered what that B.S all meant. It was like, yeah. The curtains are blue. End of story. Honestly it needed no more explanation than that. When it all boiled down to it, some things just meant what they meant.

The collection of cut up photos Demeti had assembled on his canvas was, believe it or not, a collection of cut up photos.

But shit, maybe Aleks was referring to something else, like some technical detail. Color wheel theory or whatever it was. Demetri's brain went into hard labor, and he struggled to find a term, maybe invent one on the spot.

"Uh... I wanted to explore, like, motion blur. See, in how I make the photos move chronologically when they're next to each other." He pointed to one particular bit he was currently proud of, some crazy cool ass shit he'd done where Hannah (the sister) had happened to be in the same position in two adjacent photos save for a raised arm, so he'd burnt and blurred the photo until it looked like her arm was moving from one photo into the next. At least, that was probably it.

"I just think it's cool, you know?" He didn't know what it meant.

Motion blur?  The pieces started clicking together in Aleksandra's head.  The weird blurriness around the edges of the picture was intentional all along, a stylistic choice for the sake of the piece.  The blur used to represent time, memories fading into each other.  Maybe something about the fuzziness of the past, and how memories get less clear as one gets older?  No, probably not.  Demetri probably would have mentioned that if he intended it to be seen that way.  But time was definitely a significant aspect.

"I think I see it."  She held a finger up to the canvas, tracing around the photos.  "It's kind of like the passage of time.  Or something like that, I guess."

She continued examining Demetri's work.  As a whole, it looked pretty nice.  The composition seemed pretty solid, and with what she understood of the concept, he seemed to be making good use of the blur effects for the purpose he had intended for them.  Again, photography was not really a field that she had any real knowledge or experience with, but it looked nice to her.  She wasn't really sure how much she could help in terms of further criticism, but she had her opinion at the very least.

"I like it."  Aleksandra stopped looking at the canvas so closely and she turned her head towards Demetri.  "Is it almost finished?"

"Yeah, yeah. That's it exactly!" Demetri nodded. Smiling, awkwardly, not really at Aleks but next to her at least.

No, no. He still didn't really see what she was talking about. Photos were discrete frozen moments in time, how did they show any more time than that? But if Aleks had told him his collage represented 'the inherent societal failings of man versus nature', or whatever the fuck, well. He would have said 'yeah, yeah. that's it exactly' with an exclamation point or a couple to spare. What was he if not a man who wanted a girl to kinda like him a little more?

Shit he was being kind of presumptive there, wasn't he. He had to remember that they were just talking. He hadn't put any moves on.

What was it he was supposed to do, even? Be assertive and aggressive or something, right?

"Yeah, it's pretty much done. I mean, unless you think there's more to it or something, that I might have missed. If it's okay that I ask for your opinion."

'Assertive'. Yeah. He'd get right on that. Sorry alpha bros, this dude's a total β-globin.

So... Demetri wanted to know if she thought that his work needed anything else?  Aleksandra wasn't sure how to take that.  Should she have been flattered that he was seeking her opinion?  She wasn't really sure how useful she could be in that sense.  She wasn't him, and she didn't have his mind, so she couldn't tell for sure where he wanted to take his project, even though he had already given her a good explanation of it.  It seemed fine from where she was standing, but would he want to hear that?  It sounded like he wanted criticism, but she didn't know what more she could offer.

"I think it looks good."  She mused, giving the canvas another good look up and down.  "I don't really know much about photos, but it's nice."

Honesty was the best policy, wasn't it?

She turned back for a second to look back at her own canvas.  Time was passing her by, and she still had more work that she needed to do before it was complete.  It felt weird to be in art, her favorite class, and not working on anything.  Her fingers started to feel restless as she waited for a response.

She didn't have much to say.

See that was an honest appraisal. Respectable, because Aleks didn't see fit to beat around the bush and waste people's time when it was better used... on stuff besides beating around bushes, whoever and whatever that metaphor was trying to summarize for. Back to Aleks. He kind of loved her, and in no non-literal sense, he more or less completely meant it. Like, platonic-like loved her. Demetri always knew, always realized, people who had the cajones to say it as they meant it were the people you wanted to be friends with. Not the fake plastic assholes. Those, they eventually lied to you and your face. And then some time after they lied, they'd start to mean it too.

People like that, Demetri would spit on them, honestly.

People like Aleks... something, he didn't know. Handshake, friendly bro hug, but those were for the cool dudes. For cool dudettes, uh... He'd fantasized about getting to that part, but he didn't quite know what he wanted out of it except maybe, like... blowjob? He guessed those were probably cool.

In summary, round of applause for those who still valued honesty. Round of applause for Aleks, his lust for her aside.

"Fair enough. Worth a try to ask, right?"

Time paused.

"Uh..." Don't sperg, Demetri, don't even think about bringing up the damn guitar. "... Like, I'm almost done. Mind if I join you?" That couldn't be construed in an awkward way...? Well honestly, it probably could be. Demetri once more prepared to shuffle away in shame, BTFO by life and the universe and everything else, once more.
