Study Hard

Sterling walked through the security into Detroit Central's library. The upgrade took place only a few years ago after Principle Johnson and the police learned that books were disappearing, drug deals were taking place, and two students were caught fucking. So pulling fundraising some money from the sport's teams he put in two scanners, and a police man would occasionally volunteer to sit in the library to keep an eye on things.

After returning the volunteer's greeting, a rookie that Sterling dared to let his gaze linger while his back was turned, Sterling continued into the library. It had been built with bigger hopes, and it worn down selves, out of date books, damaged tables and floors made it appear hollow and destitute.

Sterling had planned to study here with Tiffany Dexter. A friend of his who was one of the few here who really dove into the school work, and was one of the most goal driven people he's met. He also looked out for her brother when she asked him to do so last year. While it seemed sudden Sterling understood that James was being harassed, and agreed with Tiffany that the kid could use a friend to back him up. Sterling found a place to sit and wait for his friend.

[[Tiffany Dexter Continued From: Renaissance Café.]]

Really?

Really?

Really. Was this hired non-school security guard, really going to have to search her? Out of all people, her? When there are hundreds of morons in this school, who looked more like they belonged in this position? Out of all people, to be searched, it was her: Tiffany. Grace. Dexter!?

Tiffany felt like slapping the possibly corrupt and drunk with power officer, as soon as he put his filthy hands on her. But she resisted the urge, or else be arrested for assaulting an officer and be compared to the thugs of this school and community. Why did the scanner start going off on her? That scanner had to have been wired by this asshole, so he could take advantage of innocent young girls such as herself. Or else it had to be faulty. Everything at this school was so cheap.

She could feel him patting her, practically feeling her up; his hands ever so close to her bosom. She would have sued him for sexual harassment, objectifying her like that... If only she had the funds and the support to do so. This creep was probably enjoying his self. It had to be the only reason he accepted to do this job, when there are thousands of criminals running rampant around Detroit Central, not in a library of all places! It couldn't be the money, not with how cheap this school was.

Men - Most of them were disgusting.

The officer apologized, noting that Tiffany was good and was now allowed to step into the library.

"Hope you didn't enjoy yourself too much..." She sneered. "Now if you excuse, I have some studying to do. Hmmph!"

She walked off with her nose in the air as she made her way to the study area of the library where Sterling Odair sat.

When the alarm when off it almost gave Sterling a start, and when he looked up to see that Tiffany Dexter had set it off he raised an eyebrow.

This should be interesting.

He made sure not to gawk or laugh as the the officer patted her down. Tiffany's face showing her disgust like a billboard paid for by a multimillion dollar corporation. When the officer finished and gave her an apology her response wasn't forgiving in the least. He saw the librarian wince.

As she walked to Sterling he gave his usual friendly smile and asked,

"So, how's you're day been?" he was about to let it stop there, but he didn't want her to think he missed her entrance.

"Until that."

"Pretty much the average day, nothing particularly bad happened. Nothing to make me scream happiness either..." Tiffany pulled her seat out and put her books onto the table.

Sterling is a nice guy, a good friend. Sure, Tiffany was a bitch to him when they first met, but over time she got better. At first all she saw was some dumb jock, like all the rest. He didn't hang around with too many of the best people in the school, that's for sure. She even heard of his reputation with his abundant sexual exploits with girls. She hated guys like that, who would treat girls as mere sexual objects. Needless to say, Tiffany wasn't exactly the nicest of people with Sterling then.

Tiffany was impressed with how much Sterling put up with her attitude, before Tiffany came around. Sterling managed to stay polite to Tiffany, despite her contemptuous nature. It really seemed like Sterling made it an effort to try and be everyone's friend really. What surprised Tiffany was that Sterling actually cared about his studies, and made an effort to do something about his life. One of the few handful of students who did in Detroit Central. In class, Sterling tended to be one of the only people she could turn to when trying to work together and do some class work. Over time, she grew to like him, and actually started to admit she was wrong about him, and even apologized for her previous bitchiness.

Another thing that Tiffany saw was that Sterling was one of the few who actually tried to break up fights rather than start them or cheer them on. He seemed to be very helpful to other students and their problems. As a result, and also due to the fact he was big and strong, Tiffany found him to be the best choice person, of who she actually trusted and got along with, to keep a watch out for her brother, considering how he was, and how lacking of Tiffany's killer instinct her brother was.

Also, she blamed the girls for being sluts and throwing themselves at his feet rather than blaming Sterling himself for that.

"...you?"

"It's been okay. There was a fight in the gym, but Coach Nielsen and I stopped it." Sterling didn't mention that he was punched in the arm during the process, or a good sized bruise was forming.

Even with the bruise Sterling still came out better than the two in the fight. One had his noes bloodied, Sterling thought it was broken when he saw it, and the other had a black eye that went up to his hair line. The fight was over some girl, or that's what Sterling heard at least. Now they had to deal with Principle Johnson and his wrath. He hoped she was worth it.

He put his notebook and chemistry textbook on the table as he talked. Tiffany started out as one of the harder people in the school to get along with. Even for him, but in her defense he was kind of flirting with her. It did matter anymore. She warmed up, and apologized for the trouble she gave him. A lot of the guys on the basketball team made fun if him for hanging out with her and not trying to get in her pants, but Sterling let the insults pass.

"Saw James too, and he seemed fine."

"Typical." Tiffany rolled her eyes. "Johnson should expel them both. Two less idiots I need to worry about." She said bluntly.

Noticing Sterling's expression, Tiffany smiled sweetly, hoping not to look too bitter in front of her friend. "But good job with helping to break that up." She said. "At least there are some people in this school, who give me hope for the future generations, yet." Well, it wasn't too bitter at least. There was some positivity, right?

She returned her eyes to her textbook and began flipping through to the page with the Periodic Table of Elements. This was really annoying. Chemistry wasn't her best subject, not by a long shot, but Tiffany never failed at anything. It just made it, so that she had to work and study much harder to get an A.

"Saw James too, and he seemed fine." Sterling said to her. James was her brother.

"Oh, that's good. I know I tell you this pretty much everyday, but with fights like that going around: Thanks for keeping on eye on him." She gave him a soft, but playful punch in the arm. He winced, much like that librarian after she told the security guard off. At least, she thought it was soft. "Sorry, Sterling. Don't know my own strength." She smiled, before turning back to her text.

"What the hell is all this? All I see is letters and numbers? Mother-" She looked to the direction of the female librarian nearby. "-Fudger!" She was gonna fail wasn't she? No, not fail, Tiffany Dexter never fails. But with such low quality teaching; teacher's who gave up on Detroit Central students a long time ago to be bothered or even care about teaching them; well it just made things so much tougher for people like her, who wanted to pass. Maybe Sterling knew.

Staring at the page any longer, trying to figure that crap out on her own was gonna put Tiffany in a real bad mood. So she looked back at Sterling trying to find something to talk about, to take her mind off it for a little while.

"You went to that party last weekend, right? Not sure why you like going to those specific ones. They're so trashy and-" Tiffany stopped herself from scolding Sterling about that again. She really had to stop herself from being a bitch sometimes. Sterling already knew about how much she disapproved about some of the things he does; she didn't need to bring that up again.

She managed another bitterly sweet smile. "Sorry, I mean, how was it? What happened? Anything important, or should be aware of?"

Right. On. The. Bruise!

She apologized for not knowing the strength of her bruise-seeking-missle of an arm, and he just muttered that it was okay. While getting over the bruise's further complaints about Tiffany; she gave a censored and frustrated comment about chemistry. Editing herself after looking at the Librarian (who Sterling was sure caught the two students in each others pants). He reassured her,

"Well, that's why we're here." He then started to turn to the same page as Tiffany. As he got to it Tiffany asked him about the party he went to last weekend. Ignoring her bias towards his activities as he accepted that was a condition of their friendship.

Oh, that party.

Sterling kept his smile from turning into a shit eating grin as he remembered that party as he did some censoring of his own.

"Marvia Jones and," he couldn't remember the other girl's name. "some other girl got in a fight, but it got broken up before I got there." Tiffany rolled her eyes, distaste obvious. "Otherwise it was fun. Good music, good people," He figured Tiffany would beg to differ, and that was too bad. "and good times."

And a great time. He thought to himself, not caring how shallow it sounded. Despite his efforts his smile grew a little as he remembered the senior. He decided to change the topic,

"So, how was your weekend?"

"Oh."

She held it back. When Sterling looked away for a split second, Tiffany made a gagging face.

And another fight. It involved Marvia Jones. A perfect example of almost everything Tiffany hated about Detroit's students. Skipping school, random parties, using various drugs and fighting. Again, it was pretty much typical.

"Well. I'm glad you had such, a good time." Tiffany regretted asking anything.

He asked about her weekend. My weekend? She thought for exactly one second. "Completely. Uneventful." She managed a grin. "Which means it was a pretty good weekend." She gave a tiny laugh at her own expense. Then she turned back to the text. Yes, Chemistry was definitely not her favorite of subjects.

"...So uh, do you get any of this?"

Sterling nodded when Tiffany said her weekend was uneventful, and glad for it. He could never understand why Tiffany went out of her way to have such a boring time, but it was just a part of they're polarity. When she asked him if he got the chemistry he grimaced,

"Kind of." He turned to the back of the book as he trailed off. Hoping that if they got the answer to one of the questions they would have an idea of how the process worked. During this the scanner went off again, but Sterling paid no mind to it. He looked up to Tiffany,

"What problem are you on?"

She noticed Sterling's frown. It wasn't like Tiffany didn't like having fun. She didn't want a boring uneventful weekend, but that's what happened. Her mind went back to her uneventful weekend spent mostly studying or working at her family's sandwich shop. It was just to her benefit when nothing eventful happened, meant nothing bad happened either.

The scanner going off interrupted Tiffany's thoughts again. "God damn it. This is supposed to be a library. Which means it's supposed to be quiet. What kind of library has a scanner that goes off every 3 minutes?"

The two studied a little bit, but it was really difficult. She pushed the text toward Sterling showing him the compound equations.

"I'm on this one." She said looking at the clock. Lunch period was about to end pretty soon.

Sterling felt his stomach give a silent rumble, and he wished he at least snuck something from home to eat. He disregarded it after deciding to get a bag of chips from a vending machine, or have grab something from one of the near by convenience stores. Of course he'd have to leave his bag at school, but unless someone needed an extra text book it wouldn't be stolen.

He gave the problem a second look. He wrote the original equation on the top space of the notebook and looked at the answer. After working on the problem awhile he got the same answer that was in the book. After double, and triple, checking he turned the notebook towards Tiffany,

"I think I got it. What do you think?"

She was impressed. This guy, Sterling, who at first seemed like your basic brain dead buffoon type of jock, had gotten it. He had the tendency to do that, which was what drawn her to him in the first place.

Tiffany gave Sterling a quiet applause, minding the ever watchful female librarian stacking book nearby, who already looked irritated at her. "Nice job Odair!" She would have given him a peck on the cheek if she didn't have too much pride to do it. "That'll do. Thanks! So now that we got the general idea we can-"

The bell rang. "Figures."

Tiffany got off the chair and looked at her friend. He seemed bummed for some reason. Then she heard the stomach growling. Oh dear. He hadn't eaten lunch before this?

There was a benefit from owning and working in a sandwich shop. It means free sandwiches everyday and today Tiffany had an extra one. She had planned to save it for later, but she couldn't let the poor guy starve for the rest of the day. Especially after he had just helped her with some tough Chemistry work.

"Hey Sterling... you hungry?" She held the wrapped sandwich out in her hand toward him. "You can have it. It's turkey."

She picked her books up and turned to the exit. "You can eat it on the way, while you walk me to class." She said with a smile. "We can talk as we walk."

Sterling was giving a short bow at Tiffany's applause before the bell rang. Well, fuck. He got up when his stomach gave another, louder, protest. As if it would unionize his entire digestive system, and strike until he gave it food. Threatening starvation unless contracts were drawn up.

He looked to Tiffany with an apologetic look on his face, and it was obvious she heard. She then reached in her bag and held out a sandwich to him, told him it was turkey, and he could have it. Sterling had forgotten that her family owned a cafe. He took the sandwich,

"Thanks Tiff. I owe you one." He was tempted to unwrap and eat it on the spot, but the librarian would probably frown on that. He looked to see if she was looking. She was. Oh well, he could eat it in the hall. He nodded at Tiffany's invite to walk her to class, packed his bag, and put it on.

The two walked through the halls. Sterling wolfing down the sandwich, with Tiffany momentarily staring at him with wide eyes and a repulsed expression with her mouth. He didn't seem to notice though, not with him so concentrated on the sandwich at hand.

"So..." Munching noises. "Yea..." She continued walking with Sterling next to her avoiding any rowdy or irritating people roaming through the halls making their ways to their classes (Supposedly) or elsewhere, which was more likely in this place. She saw someone get pick pocketed and then chase after the thief. Rap music was thumping through the halls. Saw girls smoking in the halls. Saw kids play fighting, maybe? who knows, and all kinds of other rubbish. She saw some poor freshmen get bullied as well, which made Tiffany think about her brother James. Just get to Class... ASAP. Make no Eye Contact.

With Sterling there, it made things so much easier. He was "In" and kind of respected by the type of people who bothered Tiffany, so with him around, most people left her alone.

They turned a corner to a remarkably quieter hall way. They were almost to her next class. "Glad you enjoyed the sandwich." She said, noticing him wiping his lips with the back of his wrist.

"Anyway.. Thanks for walking with me again. Folks bother me a little less with you by me. Same for James too. Thanks." She uh, gave him a one handed half hug to the side, patting him on the shoulder. That was good enough, right? She had books in the other anyway right, he'd understand. She gave him a sandwich anyway, so this was already exceeding her niceness quota of the day anyway.

"By the way Sterling... who are some of 'the usual suspects' that bother him anyway? I'd really like to know." She said with a stern expression.

Sterling forgot how much he loved sandwiches from the cafe Tiffany's family owned, or was this his first one? Didn't matter anyways, he made a note to go there more often. As he walked to class with Tiffany the hall were similar to the streets of Detroit. Music, friends, and the works. Without the teachers it'd be a god damned party! He acknowledged greetings of "What's up/going on?" and gave a few of his own with food in his mouth (being raised by his brother and sister they tried teach him not to talk with food in his mouth, but the whole lesson would turn into giggle fits when one would tell him to stop it with food in their mouth.).

When he finished his lunch he used the skin on the back of his wrist as a makeshift napkin. Nodding as Tiffany spoke. It was much easier to hear her here (he almost forgot she was next to him). When she thanked him for walking her to class, and he shrugged and said through his usual smile,

"Any time, Tiffany. Always a pleasure to be with you guys." While they might not be as exciting as his other friends that didn't make them not worth knowing. She gave him a side hug in appreciation. He tried to return it with out knocking her books down. Tricky, but he pulled it off. This was unusually affectionate of Tiffany, but Sterling took it in stride.

Then she asked about the kids who regularly pick on her brother James, and Sterling's smile began to feel labored under the conflict in his head. James had begged him not to tell Tiffany anything about who his bullies were, and his desperation showed in his eyes in a way Sterling never seen before. Since then he got the feeling something bigger was going on with James that he wasn't telling Tiffany, and Tiffany being no idiot saw this and was using Sterling to fish information to find out what happened. Sterling didn't like thinking about the whole mess, and usually told himself he was looking too deep. Tiffany still needed an answer, and being a basketball player he could think on his feet.

"Don't worry about it. Since I started hanging around they backed off." It was ambiguous enough to keep his word to James, and would (hopefully) keep Tiffany at bay until th-.

SHHEEE-EEEECH-OOOOOOOONG

SHHEEE-EEEECH-OOOOOOOONG

SHHEEE-EEEECH-OOOOOOOONG

The bell rang. Being so old that it began as static like white noise and finished as the bell it had been fifty years ago. Here in Detroit Central the bell was a mixed blessing of ear rape and one peg closer to the end of the school day. Tiffany's class was the door to their left, and his was down the hall. He looked at Tiffany,

"Well, gotta go." and turned away wondering if the answer satisfied her. Probably not, but it was for the best. Wasn't it? He was one of the first in the room. The class was Statistics, but the teacher only taught class for twenty minutes letting the students go basically Lord of the Flies through the rest of the class.

As Sterling took his usual seat near the back of the class he wondered of he should've just told her the names. There was a reason she had asked him keep an eye. As the students dumped into the room from the hallways (most of them being tardy), and his usual crew sat around him Sterling decided he'd call Tiffany tonight and tell her the names. James would forgive him, and lying and hiding information would get him deeper in this than he'd like.
