(( Zachariah Johnston Continued From Study Date...Just Kidding! ))

Zack sat down at a table. He wasn't sure what table it was, where it was, or who was sitting on it. All he knew at that very moment in time was that this was an empty space, and he had just purchased one of those goddamn delicous mini-pizzas. He was really hungry, and really tired.

Seriously, it was times like this that he realised just how active people were at night when under stress. What time had he, or more accurately, his favourite SOTF players gone to sleep? 2-3 am? Something like that.

He lifted his glasses and pressed the balls of his hands into his eye sockets. He'd be fine. He'd just sleep through RE. He hated RE. But back to the job at hand. He took the knife and fork and cut into his pizza, bringing it up to his mouth. He looked around, watching the heaving mass of people circle him. He felt glad to be sitting down in this little island of calm. He had managed to avoid being pushed over aswell, just sidestepping the usual culprits.

The modern architecture that surrounded him was stupid. It was all form and no substance. Flowing lines and curves. He was staring off into the distance again, zoning out. He needed to keep his eyes on the here and now. Or else he would fall asleep. During lunch-break, and that would be the death knell for his already flailing social life.

He looked around for a friend, someone he could talk to. Couldn't be too hard, right?

Sean Davidson plopped grabbed one of the empty seats at the table next to Zack as the latter stared off into space. His usual table was a chair short and unfortunately, the open space for a chair to be slipped in at that table was by a window, so...that option was decidedly not going to happen.

As the lunchroom was filling up with kids...

Seniors? Not a chance they'll let me join them. Freshmen...ok, if I want to get laughed at, I can sit there. Pass. Football players...no. Girls I don't like...no.

Which essentially left one or two empty tables that weren't filling up yet, and...the seat next to Zack.

"Hey. Mind if I join you?" And thus, Sean plopped down next to Zack...asking first, but also assuming that Zack didn't have someone coming that he'd need to scoot for and taking the seat once he'd asked.

Taking a stab at Zack's obvious tiredness as he pulled a sandwich out of his lunchbox, Sean smiled. "Long night?"

He smiled, a fellow SOTFer was here. Sean. He was almost almost as unpopular as him. Maybe one or two rungs up on the fabled social ladder. He always seemed about half a century behind the current fashions, not that he minded. He thought it showed a level of confidence he didnt have. He was as equally bold with his philisophical views, which he liked even more. If he wanted to talk about his views on an issue, or just wanted a civvilised argument to vent his frustration.

He was just about finishing his meal as he came closer, asking rather stupidly if he minded if he sat down. He gestured to his apathy, though internally was glad to have some company.

"Long night?" Sean asked.

So he looked as tired as he felt? Ah well, he'd expected it.

"Every night is as long as the last, exactly 8 hours, numbnuts" He shot back, putting the final slice of pizza in his mouth.

He really detested sayings that made little sense, so he decided to poke a little fun out of them. Oh, and him. He didnt mind usually. He offered his coke to him, as a gesture of friendship.

"Every night is as long as the last, exactly 8 hours, numbnuts"

"Right. Which is why we all get the same amount of sleep every night." Sean actually chuckled at Zack's (rather punchy) response rather than taking offense. He'd read somewhere that exhaustion was quite like being drunk...which meant that someone who was tired but trying to stay awake could be rather amusing, as Zack was clearly managing.

"Or did a couple of those hours run forget to stop by your house?" Beat. "No, I know...SOTF's on and we're all up late watching it." Sean knew he was, at least, but not by that much. He'd cut off his connection at midnight, but set his computer up to record anything he might miss on the guys he was following. As real as it was, he didn't feel like flunking a Latin test because he was up all night watching it: If he did, he could kiss the rest of the season goodbye.

And besides, it wasn't like he could keep up with them in the middle of the school day...most of the time. Silver Dragon had a good enough filter in the library that most SOTF-related sites got blocked, and Sean wasn't smart enough to get around them all of the time.

"Who're you watching that's got you up all night?"

"Right. Which is why we all get the same amount of sleep every night." Ooooh, lovely backhand there, 15 all.

He smiled, they probably had had the same amount of sleep, he was a big of a nut as he was. He just had stayed up insanely late the past few nights too. He was watching his grades drop as he added new points to his charts and entries in his book. He patted his back pocket subconciously. Still there. His great book of mistakes. He always had it on him at school. Sure it had been stolen. Four times, burnt once aswell. But he backed it up on his computer.

"Or did a couple of those hours run forget to stop by your house?" And a cracking shot there, 30 - 15

"No, I know...SOTF's on and we're all up late watching it." 40 - 15, advantage front.

So he had been up watching it. Probably one of the twins. They were rather hot, he had to admit. He knew they had been chosen solely to provide fanservice, but he wasnt complaining.

"Who're you watching that's got you up all night?"

Ah ha! A question he could answer. Great. Wait... Who're?

"A. It would be Who in that sentence, and B. I was watching two, well, three. One on my TV and one on my Laptop. The Jap twins and that hardcore JROTC dude with the sniper.. Umm, James I think"

Sean didn't have a book of his own, but there was a nice version of the old Evil Overlord's List dedicated just to stupid SOTF mistakes and the like. Oh, some of that stuff was good...

"A. It would be Who in that sentence, and B. I was watching two, well, three. One on my TV and one on my Laptop. The Jap twins and that hardcore JROTC dude with the sniper.. Umm, James I think"

"James, too." Beat. "The girls' stuff will get recycled and remixed until we're sick of it and next season starts, you know. But the players are always more interesting to watch than the sideshow."

Which was, sadly, true. Despite the best efforts of the producers, enough attempts at fanservice had simply not worked out: They got killed off early. They did nothing for most of their time and then got killed quickly. Or something else went wrong and you ended up watching thirty hours of TV that somehow managed to combine a life-or-death struggle with sheer boredom in the hopes that everyone would "play their part" in some way.

A bit more munching intruded in the conversation as Sean made sure to make use of lunchtime for, well, lunch. It wouldn't do to be starving come last period, now, would it?

"Watching Jimmy, too. He's fun to watch." Jimmy was one of the players who had probably been screened for insanity before the show...a theory was going around that the producers tried to pick at least one kid with a screw loose each time, since seeing someone come unhinged was always...well, entertaining in its own way. Jimmy was no different: He'd snapped right off the bat and had managed what was looking like a fun string of kills mixed with a string of monologues...and a few people on one forum he'd read were wondering if he wasn't just putting on an act. Of course, he'd probably die stupidly when someone he thought he'd killed shot him in the middle of a speech, but that was neither here nor there. In fact, that would be the best part: Somebody making a "movie mistake" for real and then having to live with it (or not).

"James, too. The girls' stuff will get recycled and remixed until we're sick of it and next season starts, you know. But the players are always more interesting to watch than the sideshow."

He nodded, that was fair. The girls were a fair bit of fun, and that one sex scene was enough porn for three lifetimes. And the players were most certaintly the most attractive thing in the whole game. Guns 'n' guts, all that stuff. It was amazing television, amazing data, and great fun to talk about. Better than the romance, better than the fanservice, better than the character development, better than the suspense and far better than the boring conversations.

"Watching Jimmy, too. He's fun to watch."

Huh? That nutjob? He couldn't believe that that he'd be into that dude. After all, It was obvious he'd been snipe picked for the job as a obvious uber player.

Sure, he'd done a few really nice kills, but he was breaking Rule #2 "Dont go insane". There had been exactly nought insane winners. Not to mention his monolouges, they were hillarious, but the kid seemed to think he was in an action flick.

He gestured with the Coca-cola bottle again, as he wasnt thirsty. He wouldnt want his friend going thirsty.

"Meh, Jimmy's kills; Fantastic, his game plan... Not so much. I don't really have a thing for the nutty ones. The cold and calculating ones really grab my attention though. I think if I got dumped there I'd be like that, you know." He said, flicking to the back page of his Book. Past the calculations, the charts and everything, to the unlined pages at the back where he kept his thoughts and to do lists. He kept a little picture of Mae in her ballet costume taped in the back. He lifted it in such a way that the picture couldnt be seen by anyone else.

Fuck...

He was getting distracted, He didnt want Sean to think he wasn't paying attention to him.

He closed the book and shoved it in his back pocket, the moleskin dragging on his jeans.

"It's not just who wins and who doesn't, though. I know Jimmy's toast..." And of course, now watch him win. "...just like you do. And I'll probably even enjoy watching him die. But I'm not watching him because he's going to win anymore than you're watching the girls because they're going to."

Munch, munch. "Thanks." The offered soda was accepted. Germs or not, it was better than having to pay for a soda. Free food that's as tasty as food you bought was just that much better, wasn't it?

"The calculating ones? How many of them try to do everything right and then have that backfire." There was probably a pattern in there somewhere...figure out which part of the pattern you're in and you improved your chances, yadda yadda yadda. Heck, there was probably even some fancy paper on the topic by now...not that he'd understand it. "And how many of them do you remember?"

Sean noticed Zack peek in his notebook for a moment, though he couldn't guess what he was looking at. The glance wasn't that long and...well, it was probably none of his business, but Sean did indicate that he'd noticed the peek with an arch of his eyebrows.

"It's not just who wins and who doesn't, though. I know Jimmy's toast..."

Kiss of death on that now, in all likelihood Jimmy'd win now. I mean, that kid is so unlucky, if he bought a graveyard people would stop dying. Not tht luck actually exsisted, it was just points on the bell curve. It was a pattern more than anything. But luck summed it up more succintly than "A pattern of a series of coincidental occurences of bad outcomes".

"...just like you do. And I'll probably even enjoy watching him die. But I'm not watching him because he's going to win anymore than you're watching the girls because they're going to."

Fair point. Advantage forecourt.

He felt a sense of helpfulness as the drink was taken. He did like helping people. It was nice to feel needed rather than needy

"The calculating ones? How many of them try to do everything right and then have that backfire. And how many of them do you remember?"
He looked at him, an evil smile on his face.

"Do you really want me to answer that truthfully? You know I can and will repeat them all" He said, a brief hint of boastfulness in his voice.

His eyebrows moved into an arch. What was that about? Shit, had he seen him look at the picture in the back? Oh god...

He began to look around shiftily, he just knew this was bad. He was beginning to panic.

Dad had said that this was "A bit weird" which translated to "Okay, thats really creepy, just dont tell anyone or you'll get bullied to hell again"

Ohgodohgodohgodohgodohgod. He'd seen. Shit, he was going to blab and he'd be bullied again. Well, not again. But more. He didn't want to be the pariah again, he'd worked so hard to claw his way up from rock bottom, and now it was all for nothing.

No, he just had to lie, tell him that he was doing something else! Yeah.

"Ummm, I was just, uh, looking up the winners" He mumbled frantically.

Tim was scouting the lunchroom for idiots, or the people he referred to as 'saps', to play a game with him and give him their money as he usually did. So far: little luck today. His regulars just weren't biting the new game, and he'd been hard pressed to find someone else to pick up the slack.

But luck was on his side, he was sure of that. So with his dark sunglasses and dark brown cowboy hat, he looked for someone, anyone, to try their luck against his. And there was a potential mark right...

"Damn! Leaving already. Alright, lunch is almost over anyway. I'll just have to find some other sucker soon." His eyes drifted to a table with only two guys sitting there. "Bingo." With a quick smirk, he started walking towards them.

"Hey, mind if I sit here?" He asked as he set a chair on one side of their table. "So, I couldn't help but notice you're fans of SOTF." He continued, without so much as letting them even reply or acknowledge his presence. "Those twins sure are something eh? Don't you just wish they went to our school huh?"

He smiled quickly, then continued.

"So, I've got a little sc— err, game I'm running concerning that game. Little gambling ring, nothing too serious ya' know? Was just wondering if I could put the two of you down for a couple of bucks in. Make a little bet on the next to die, payout's 10:1 if you win. Whadd'ya say?"

He smiled as the gangster aficionado walked by their table, his dark brown cowboy style' hat and sunglasses standing out in the crowd like a sore thumb. The boy-gangster walked up to them, a swagger in his step.

He stated the painfully obvious, as people often did.

"Meh, if the twins went to our school, do you really think it would make any diffrence? It's not like I or you stand a chance" he replied, carefully noticing he sharkish grin he had on his face. He was up to something.

Gambling, eh? Numbers? Fuck yeah. He could stat that stuff up right now.

Then he relistened to what the boy had said and sighed.

"Don't patronise me seniorita, those odds are insanely in your favour. I'm not risking 10 bucks for a one buck return. Switch 'em round and I'm in" he said, a slightly irritated tone in his voice.

Lou Becker rushed into the cafeteria, late as always from him oversleeping in class and nobody waking him up. His face was red from him running down the halls, and partially because he was embarrassed waking up five minutes after class ended and the teacher mentioned that she forgot he was even there. Slowing down as fast as he could (or as fast as a obese man could after doing the best he could to sprinting), Lou put his hands on his knees in an attempt to catch his breath.

The cafeteria, like always, was packed. Most of the lunch tables were packed, as were the ones on the outer fringes of the cafeteria. Expect for one tucked away in the corner. Squinting to make out who it was, Lou thought he saw Zachariah Johnston. He was a nice guy, or at least compared to most in the school. At least he knew what he was talking about when he talked about SOTF-TV. The rest of the kids in the school, they might see a few episodes and call themselves a habitual watcher. But its not like they ever watched it from Season 1 all the way up to the current season, have they?

Walking through the cafeteria, keeping his head down as he walked forward, Lou heard the whispers of people sitting at the end of tables like 'Get a load of that guy' or 'Christ, does he need to lose some weight'. Or at least Lou thought he heard that, it might just be Lou's fake paranoia talking. Arriving at the table, Lou stood awkwardly to the side. In his right hand he gripped the lunchbox he's used since fourth grade, while he pushed up his glasses up from his greasy nose with his left.

"Can I sit here?" Lou asked, just loud enough for them to hear him over the din of he cafeteria.

"Do you really want me to answer that truthfully? You know I can and will repeat them all."

Sean laughed in spite of himself. "You know you're nuts, right? Ok, what about someone else? Say..." And then Tim entered his view, getting a smile and a nod as the other boy asked to have a seat.

"Tim. Feel free." And then the twins came up again, getting a roll of the eyes. "Someone like Tim."

"Don't patronise me seniorita, those odds are insanely in your favour. I'm not risking 10 bucks for a one buck return. Switch 'em round and I'm in."

"I'm with Zack." He was trusting Zack to actually know the math in question...which might be a lot, but...he seemed to know what he was talking about. "$10 if I win for $1 I bet. Also..." Pause. "Make it the first death after 3 PM here today. For all I know, someone died while we're sitting here and you know who it is."

Tim wouldn't be offering a bet if he didn't think he'd come out ahead. Sean didn't think he was cheating, but...better safe than sorry when a bookie (even one who is in his class) is involved.

Beat.

"What will you give me for betting that it's one of the twins? That's not a straight bet, but I'm getting sick of hearing you guys talk about them." There was no irritation in Sean's voice as he offered up the bet.

...and then, Lou showed up. "Can I sit here?"

"Feel free. We've got room for one more, right? Anyhow, guys...tell me who you think was the most memorable pla...contestant." He stopped himself short, deciding not to risk the confusion of 'player' as someone stuck in the show with 'player' as someone actively and aggressively trying to win. "The most memorable contestant from last season."

The first thing that tipped Tim off to this not being a case of easy money was Zack noticing the incredibly-stacked-against-the-better buy-in/payoff. Damn. Most people ignored that and just assumed the higher number was what they were getting.

The second was Sean making the bet about the first death after 3 PM. Double damn. "What the hell was the point of skipping most of lunch to find out the latest death? Mental note, picks marks better next time. Luck ain't on my side today, that's for sure."

And then Lou joined the table. Not that Tim had anything against the guy, but he wasn't looking to socialize here, especially considering that his social status would dip dangerously low if he stayed any longer than he had to. Ah, but that's the gamble he took to make some money.

"That's Señor by the way, I ain't a broad. And yeah, 10 bucks return for 1 buck buy-in is what I meant." He adjusted his glasses. "Seriously. Not trying to cheat you guys here." He looked at Sean. "As for first death after 3 PM, that's fine. All good. Just what I was planning." He adjusted his glasses again. Easy money was suddenly seeming a lot harder to obtain.

"Now for that bet, I'd say..." He pondered for a moment what he could possibly gain from that kind of bet. "If it is one of the twins, I'd say I'll go ahead and triple what you put in. But I'll accept a wager of no less than 5." If luck continued as it had, he'd lose this too. But that was fine, he had some money to lose. Just as long as Sean didn't go with some outrageous amount.

"As per your other question, I liked that one chick. You know, the one who went with the robe and the Angel-Of-Death style executions. Like she was some sort of agent of divine vengeance or something. Man, that's some memorable stuff right there. I forget what her name was. Eh, doesn't matter. What's your pick?"

Sweet. Numbers.

He flicked through the pages of his notebook, to the penultimate page, the photo just visible through the thin paper. He took a pencil and began to do his calculation.

He loved numbers. They made sense in a way people never did. Jonny Bevery. That seemed like a likely candidate. He was weak and alone.

To page 72, the Bell curve he had drawn up.

He needed a straight edge. He didnt have a ruler. Damn. He'd have to guess. He adjusted his glasses as they slid down his nose, trying to get a better look at the numbers hhe'd scrawled nigh illegibly along the bottom.

Aha, his glasses. A straight edge atlast. He whipped his glasses off and lined it up parralel with the X axis. He drew the appropriate line.

39.76% chance. That was good enough. He'd risk a tenner on that.

"Anyhow, guys...tell me who you think was the most memorable pla...contestant."

He looked up, his eyes closed as he checked over hiscalculations, his mouth silently moving with his mind.

"Uhh..." He murmured as he finished thinking over the numbers. He opened his eyes and put his glasses back on with a flourish.

"That queeny cheerleader. Just for her death. Tell me you werent going "Efff Yeah!" when she died"

He paused, pulling a ten dollar bill from his shirt pocket.

"Ten on Jonny Bevery, my good man" He said, placing the paper on the table.
