Study Date...Just Kidding!

Mae did not want to think that she was making sure that her make up was perfect in the mirror because of Zach, first of all, he was just coming over in order to help her study for trig. This wasn't anything special or anything. Plus, Zach and her were just friends.

She leaned over closer to the mirror, her mouth hanging slack as she gingerly applied coal black mascara to her eyes. Should she wear eye shadow? No. That would be trying too hard.

For a friend.

With her pinky she expertly applied some lip color. Nothing too intense, of course, she always liked to look as though she had just bitten into some sort of brightly colored berry. It was natural and yet still pretty. She smiled at herself in the mirror. Yes. Pretty. She looked pretty. Not that it mattered for this. Her cell phone chirped from its place on the back of the toilet. One of her friends, no doubt. Probably Jess.

OMG When r u going to be DONE!! I'm bored we should go to the mall! Unsurprised, Mae frowned at the texting lexicon, why did people always have to substitute "r" for "are" and "u" for "you"? It only two like, two seconds of effort. She screwed up her face into a sort of grimace as she texted back.

I know. It's so lame, I promise that when he leaves I'll call you right away.

"Mae!" Her mother's voice echoed up the stairs. Jumping, Mae swept all of her cosmetics into a draw in her vanity and got to her feet.

"Coming!" Her voice rang out. He was here, why was her heart pounding like she was nervous? It was just Zach, he was probably here more than any of her other friends. ...She had to fix that, what if the other kids at school started thinking she was weird because she never had anything at her place? Maybe she should throw a party...

Running down the stairs, she was greeted by her mother, her face pinched in disapproval at her decidedly unladylike haste. "Zach's here," she told her daughter. "I let him into the parlor."
"Thanks, Mom," she leaned over and kissed her mother on the cheek. "We're studying for a big trig test, all of my homework is done."

Her mother's face softened into a look of approval. "Well, study hard, honey, you know you can get an A."

She felt that familiar drop in her stomach at this. Yes. She would need to get an A. She could do that, she had to do that.

"I'll bring in some lemonade," her mother told her. "Happy studying, sweetie!"

Mae watched her mother buzz off into the kitchen in order to tell the maid to make some fresh squeezed lemonade. She felt her heart begin to feel several sizes too big as she headed to the parlor.

Just a study date. No. Just a study get together. That was all.

She slowly opened the door, peeking her head inside. "Hello Zach," she said calmly. "Thanks for making it."

(( Zachariah Johnston - Start ))

Zachariah lounged on the sofa as he studied the twitter feeds scroll on his screen. He cracked his knuckles, the little bubbles of gas in the fluid that separated the joints in his slender fingers popping and dissipating. He'd always wondered why it felt so fulfilling to do, or why everyone told him it was a bad habit, but answers concerning things like that tended to evade him.

He glanced at the clock on the bottom right corner of his crisp plasma display.

"12:28" he mumbled.

"Oh, goddamn it" he shouted, angry with himself. He had wanted to start getting ready almost a half hour ago.

He had some time planned with Mae. Nothing fancy, just some studying. He liked studying, and he liked Mae. It was a perfect combination.

He liked studying with Mae more than anyone else. It wasn't because she didn't get into a fit everytime he helped her as so many others would, or even that she was so pretty. Whilst these certaintly helped it along, he really enjoyed it because she was the closest to a best friend he had. And it was nice.

He looked down once more, the display now having counted down to 12:30 on the dot. He pushed himself of the chair and began to change. He didn't own very many trendy clothes, because they never seemed to be worth the effort or price. He did, however, have a pair of skinny black jeans and a branded hoodie hanging clean in his wardrobe. He was half way through pulling his hoodie on when he remembered about deodorant. He didn't want to BO her out, right? She was one of the best lucky breaks he had, a popular, loyal friend who he was sure wasn't just using him to do her homework for her. He finished dousing himself in Lynx and pulled on the rest of his clothes.

He walked into the bathroom and cracked open a barely used tub of hair gel. All the "cool" kids used it, so he'd look better with it. He styled into something resembling a style he'd seen in a movie once and ran downstairs, slipping on some trainers and grabbing a textbook

"I'm going to Mae's now Ma!" he said, slamming the door behind him.

A few minutes of painfully slow walking and he was at her house. He rapped his knuckles on the door four times. Mae's mum greeted him and led him to the parlor.

"Thank you, Ma'am" he said politely as he stood there, awaiting his hosts arrival.

He heard muffled conversation, but ignored it; after all, it was rude to listen in to peoples conversations. That would be bad manners, and he wanted to show her how good mannered and nice he was.

Then she came in, and he had to check twice. This didn't look lime the Mae from school...

She looked like she had just fallen off a catwalk.

He just smiled a little as she thanked him for making it.

"I should be thanking you, after all, you've saved me from boredom." he said, placing his text book on the coffee table as he stole another glance at her.

"Y-you look very pretty" he said quietly, a flush rising to his cheeks.

Oh, god. Why had he said that? He must sound like a hormonal 14 year old. He even stuttered. Goddamnit. Why couldn't he ever do anything right?

Mae hugged her trigonometry book tighter in an attempt to keep herself from mimicking his blush. Had Zach actually called her pretty? She knew she had put too much make up on for this, and she definitely wasn't secretly happy that he had noticed. No. Not at all. She had bene called pretty by dozens of boys, most of which had definitely been only saying it to get in her pants, but for some reason when Zach felt it, she actually believed it.

Bad news. Not real.

She lightly stepped over to the armchair beside his. In Mae's opinion, the parlor was one of the most useless rooms in the house. Her parents' antiques were placed carefully around the room in an effort to look casual, attempting to fit in with the tall mahogany bookcases that held dozens of leather bound books her parents had probably never read. Mae herself was too nervous to take any of them off of the shelf. Her father liked to say that they were all first editions. However, the chairs were comfortable and there was no television, which made it an ideal study place. Sinking down into the comfortable, but carefully not over worn chair, balanced her book carefully on the arm.

"So I figured we could start by going over reciprocal identities. For some reason it's just not clicking for me and I know it's going to be on the test." She leaned over, brushing her dark hair back as soon as it attempted to fall over her shoulders.

She would never admitted it, but Zach actually smelt good.

He watched, a little weirded out as she seemed to struggle with something. That was the thing that made all the socialising difficult for him, and part of what made Mae such a nice person to be around. She did this only very occasionally.

Unlike the other 99.7% of the worlds population, when he saw people doing things like leaning back or just crying for no reason, he just stood back, bewildered. He liked to think that someone had cross wired the part of his brain that did Math with the part that did people.

When anyone else saw a Quadratic Wave Equation they just stared at it with a horrified look and refused to even try to learn it's intimacies. Well, not everyone, but many people did. He saw people, or more specifically their odd social quirks and whatnot, as a heaving mass of complexities and unsolvable equations. It was bewildering at the best of times and terrifying at the worst of times.

He heard something about Math... Reciprocals? Right.

He noticed her looking at him funny again, but shrugged it off. He'd probably just breached some unspoken rule of etiquette again. And he was trying to show a good face to her today. He sighed internally, deflating a little on the outside.

But back to the Math.

He began to explain about how it was all related to SOHCAHTOA without going on any tangents. He really liked tangents, so he ran them in his head, with topics from SOTF to Ancient Architecture flitting in his head.

He had to stop himself from stealing glances at her, it wouldn't be... Proper.

After all, she's cool, I'm not. She could sic the football team on me and that didn't end well the first time. He thought, shuddering at the painful memory.

He caught himself looking at her longingly once or twice, trying to figure out what she was thinking. He wondered if she saw him as a friend, or if she wanted it to be something more...

No.

She was a friend, and he wasn't going to jeopardise that in a million years. After all, she was so hot she must have the pick of all the guys.

He still wanted to ask her though. But he couldnt risk being rejected alnd shunned by her. Or worse, hurting her. She might think that he had just come over to get in her pants. He hadn't. He just wanted to see her beautiful face around again.

And the cycle repeats... He thought cynically

He finished the chapter at a far slower pace than he normally would have, but he felt a sense of pride in having helped her somehow. That feeling of accomplishment was unrivalled at that moment.

"So... You get it now?" he asked

Zach had this amazing ability to explain things so that she understood them completely. It was hard to put her finger on it, but she seemed to explain it to her as though it was the simplest thing in the world, and by doing that she began to see it as simple. She could feel the muscles in her face begin to relax as he unfolded reciprocals for her. How simple it all was, the corners of her mouth tugged in an attempt at a smile, but she stopped herself by thinking about all of the other things she had left to study, the fact that she still needed to text Jess to at least attempt to fit in a mall shopping trip between this study date and ballet rehearsal later.

Did she just think date?

"I do understand it now," she said slowly as she turned the pages of her book. Most of the stuff she already understood, sines and cosines and tangents and triangles. Part of her, however, didn't want this to be over quite yet. This was silly though, studying with a friend was hardly thrilling, but sometimes it was nice...being all holed up in a room discussing straightforward rules. Every other boy she spent time with seemed to always want something from her, something she really wasn't willing to give. They'd sit and listen to her talk about how math is the same in every language and they would refuse to find the beauty in that. They always just wanted her to get out of her top, which, frankly, was a turn off.

But did Mae even have a turn on? She paused at periodic functions and idly thought about it. Of course she had kissed boys, it wasn't necessarily good or bad when she did, but something always made her want to stop them when they attempted to go further. Was she some sort of freak? No...she just wasn't ready. Right?

She glanced up at Zach, who was probably waiting for her to ask about something else. She liked Zach, he was a good friend who didn't want anything more than that. Mae was sure about it. He was a straightforward kid who saw things a certain way, and because of that, he definitely couldn't see her like that.

It both comforted her and disappointed her at the same time. Mostly comforted, she assured herself hastily. Definitely more comforted than disappointed. Totally didn't even disappoint her.

"Which is good, I'm having such a hard time concentrating! I keep thinking about last night's episode of SOTF-TV!"

This probably wasn't true, but maybe if she got him talking about that for a moment, she could mentally talk herself into forgetting that his eyes were a rather startling shade of green behind those glasses.

"You were watching this seasons finale as well?" he asked, slightly surprised that she had stayed to watch it at 2am in the morning. He'd decided to record it so he didn't look and feel like something on the wrong side of a dogs intestinal tract. He'd watched it earlier this morning. It had been pretty brutal.

He liked it. Plenty of data. That complete nutcase had been so close to winning, until that little Asian dude had put three rounds in her cerebral cortex.

He tried to contain himself, as he often bored people by talking about SOTF in excessive length. He decided that he wanted to know more about her, so took the first thing that came to the front of his mind and spewed it out.

"So, are- What are you doing in Ballet tonight, Mae?" he asked, habitually adjusting his glasses as he tried not to show how nervous he was getting.

Mae was caught off guard by his question. She had counted on the fact that he usually liked to ramble about show, and now he had completely side swiped her with an inquiry about ballet. No one cared about the fact that she did ballet, no friends had ever really gone to see any of her performances and most only seemed to acknowledge it when she couldn't hang out with them because of practice. She looked down at her hands, twisting her fingers together.

"We're doing a production of Tchaikovsky's The Sleeping Beauty...it's a great production. I'm really looking forward to this one, we open next week."

It wasn't a big thing, especially these days, most people didn't take interest in such things like ballet anymore, and the few people who did were into it way too intensely. Thanks to the way the entertainment industry seemed to be these days, but those who still enjoyed it clung to it as though it were the last true art left. Those people made her uncomfortable. Mae herself loved the passion of dancing, the ritual of it, but part of her hated every time she was given main roles in things. There was so much pressure from complete strangers to be entertaining. Sometimes she just enjoyed dancing in the company, in the background.

However, when it came to this one, it all seemed different. She played Aurora, the titular Sleeping Princess, and for some reason it all just spoke to her. When she was dancing as Aurora, everything else just seemed smaller. It was wonderful.

She snapped out of her reverie, glancing up at Zach. "Oh...sorry. It's not actually important or anything, it's just a silly community dance troop."

He thought about that. She made it sound like it was immensely important, and the casually disregarded it as silly. That... Just didn't fit. Why was she being so confusing? Was she hiding something? Was he missing out on some subtle clue that only he could fail to see?

The more he thought about it, the more likely the last option seemed to him. He looked into her eyes. He liked the colour of her eyes, it was like someone had mixed up honey and chocolate. It looked exactly like how you think that would look. As in beautiful and cute.

Damn it. Now is not the time for romance. This wasn't a romancey setting. Romancey settings were all posh and artsy...

Posh and artsy... Ballet...

Maybe he could do what all the noble princes did and make their fair maiden swoon?

He laughed at himself internally. As if he could make her fall for him. She'd have to be very heavily intoxicated.

Maybe if he sat through this recital she might realise how much she meant to him. After all, best friends are there to offer support and all that.

"The Sleeping Beauty..." he repeated, remembering the fairytale. He could deal with watching that. Especially if she was in a leotard...

Real classy Zachary, real classy. He thought to himself as he tried to work out something to say.

"Hey, everything is silly to someone, it can't be that bad or no one would come, right?" he said slowly, before pausing to think deeply.

He had to think of something believable, something insightful and clever. Or he would be caught out.

His cheeks began to tingle and his throat felt dry and scratchy. He swallowed some of his spit before breaking eye contact. He felt so... Weird. He felt like he was doing something wrong, but the surge of adrenalin told him he was doing great.

Now even his own body was getting in on the "Confuse the shit out Zachariah" parade.

"Can I watch you when you perform please? I'd like to at least see it before I make up my mind. After all, you gotta try everything once!"

Well... That actually didn't kill off any chances of a social life Zach, good one.

No one had ever openly asked to see Mae perform before. Most of her other friends viewed her love of the ballet as though she had a love for needlepoint and barn raising. Sure, it was old fashioned, but Mae considered it beautiful, even if no one else did.

She looked at Zach, who seemed to be embarrassed about something. She could understand that, he wasn't necessarily the most popular person around, and if word got out that he liked to attend ballet recitals, things might go a little south for him. Mae couldn't help herself though, her mind flashed to after the performance, walking out and seeing him standing there with a bouquet of flowers in his hands.

Nestled in her lap, her cell phone chirped, bringing her out of her shameful daydream. Another text message from Jess.

R u almost done learning about triangles? Mae couldn't help but be mildly impressed that Jess actually knew what trigonometry had to do with, but she didn't appreciate the flippant attitude. Glancing back up at Zach she said "I'm sorry, one second."

We're almost done, I swear.
Good, because Frank's @ the mall and he totally wants 2 talk to u.

Mae raised an eyebrow at this information. Frank was a senior, and probably one of the most popular boys in the senior class. He wanted to talk to her? Interesting...

"Okay. Sorry. Of course you can come see it, but I mean...it's really old fashioned and stuff, but I would really like it if you come."

Give and take, that's what it was all about. Agree to meet Jess and Frank at the mall, allow Zach to come see you dance. This way she wouldn't be thought of as the "creepy dancing girl who hangs out with the weirdo all the time." She hated this kind of dance, but it was one she definitely had to play.

"No one's ever come to see me before," she added. "That would be nice."

His hear fluttered as she spoke. She- Oh goddamn it. He patted himself down, thinking that his phone was being rung. He placed his hand on the dormant form of his phone and it took a second or two for him to realise that she had already opened up her phone and was texting someone.

She'd seemed a little distracted before that. Was he being boring? He was probably being boring. Or weird. Or retarded, special, crazy, or whatever the school Jocks decided he was at that very moment. He tried not to think of them. Frank, Jared, all of the a-holes that made up the football team and seemed to have made it their life goal to make his day as miserable as humanly possible. It wasn't as bad as it used to be, but being tripped and pushed around wasnt exactly how he envisaged his life going.

No. I'm not going to give them the satisfaction of making me miserable when I'm not even near them. That doesn't even make sense, it's not like they're going to turn up on Mae's doorstep and screw him over.

There was a little glint of determination in his eyes when he opened them again. She had finished her texting. Or call. He'd been busy thinking. It didn't concern him anyways.

She talked about how it was old fashioned and how she'd like him to come-

Hold the bus...

She. Wanted. Him?

He turned that over in his mind, trying to make sense of it. She had never had anyone watch her? Bull. She was so lithe and flexible he could just tell she would be amazing. It might not be the most conventional of entertainment forms. But if you haven't tried everything, you haven't lived.

He wanted to go now. To see the roses of admiration tossed at her. Maybe he should bring a rose?

He had to think of something mature and sensible to say. Something witty and charming... What was that line he'd heard on SOTF once? Ah, yes. That fitted perfectly

"The pleasure would be all mine" he said, a feeling of enthusiasm amongst other emotions seeped into his words, being absorbed into it and making it sound better...

... He hoped.

Mae's eyes widened slightly, impressed that he actually was willing to go to such a thing. Unbidden, red flushed to her cheeks at the thought of him watching her.

Chirp chirp!
OMG I think Frank likes U. U better look hot when we meet up k?

In spite of herself, she felt a sick relief blossom in her chest as she read this. A popular boy liked her and because of this, she would definitely retain her status at the school. This was all silly, of course, so far she had done absolutely nothing to make people think any less of her, and she didn't intend to do anything to make people think any less of her.

"Thank you, Zach, no one's ever wanted to come to one of my recitals before...It would honestly be nice to know that someone other than my parents were watching." What was she doing?! Why was she saying this sort of stuff!? Was she crazy? Mae sat back in her chair, pressing her back against the cushions in an attempt to distance herself from this potential intimacy. Zach was the worst idea, all of her friends would think that she was slumming it and that was just not something she could afford.

"Are we almost done?" She asked. "I think I understand everything else and I have to get somewhere in about an hour."

It wasn't mean, but it definitely wasn't friendly, and Mae knew she had to toe that line all the time, with everyone. She just wished sometimes that she didn't have to do it with him.

He saw a red flush colour her cheeks, the blood colouring her normally pale and elegant face. He fought off the urge to blush back by biting the inside of his lower lip.

She shuffled back in her chair, was he making her uncomfortable? He hoped he wasn't.

Then she said something about needing to go to somewhere and he smiled. It made sense. She was just agitated, cooped up by him and her studies when she wanted to be with her other friends. He was glad she was being straight up with this rather than beating round the bush. He was always confused why people felt the need to sugar coat everything. After all, if someones upset by you having to do something then they aren't very good friends.

He began to carefully replace the pages into his folder, making sure to put them exactly where they came from. He carried on talking, not looking up from his tidying as he spoke.

"So, Where and when?" he asked

For a moment she thought he meant where she was going to the mall and at what time. She sat there, momentarily bewildered, as she attempted to cook up some sort of polite lie that wouldn't hurt him in any way.

Then she remembered...he was coming to her show. Stuttering a little in surprise, she told him the location and time, sometime next week, so close and such a source of excited stress for her until right now. She glanced down at her book, open in her lap, absorbing the formulas and taking comfort in the fact that this was at least something she could fully understand.

"I'm looking forward to seeing you there," she said absentmindedly, this was getting bad, her truth telling muscle was definitely getting a workout today.

He finished picking up his numberous pieces of paper and tucked the folder under his left arm as he got up out of the comfy chair. He tried to think of something conclusive to say. What was something like this called? A date? That sounded right.

He placed a hand on her shoulder

"Me too, It's a date" He said innocently.

Should he give her a kiss? Just a quick one on the cheek? He should, it would be friendly ad polite. Every fibre in his body was telling him to do it. He wanted to feel her soft cheek against his lips. No, that wasnt right. He wanted to feel her plush, cherry lips against his, he wanted to rub his hands through her velvety black hair. Their bodies pressed together.

Ugggh, he was thinking how a romance novel was written. That was just bad

He leaned in closer, his lips parting slightly.

No. This wasnt going to work. She might have a boyfriend, He hoped she didnt-

Did he seriously just think that? That wasnt right. He hoped she had the boyfriend she deserved. Some handsome, sensitive person, who would read poetry to her and enjoy ballet or something...

Someone normal... Someone popular.

He sighed, a whistful breath passing from his body as he stood back up.

"Thanks for letting me come round... It was nice" He said, trembling slightly.

He was trembling, did Mae do something wrong? She knew that Zach was different from other people, he couldn't pick up on normal social cues and she knew that he felt things different, probably. It made him fascinating and terrifying at the same time, because she couldn't read him as easily as she could others.

But was she upsetting him now? She tried to think...she knew that they were friends, and she wasn't sure he thought of her anything beyond that, was all of the social pressure getting to him? He obviously wanted to run away, maybe her presence was too much of a pressure? She didn't want to pressure him, into doing anything he didn't want to.

She got to her feet, ready to see him out, behind her, nestled in the nook of the armchair, she heard her cell phone chirp. It could be ignored for now.

"It's a date," she said kindly. She couldn't help but feel warmth in her stomach at saying this. "Let me walk you out?"
