Shelter by the Lakeside

Content Warning (Semi-Private/PM First)

Similar in feel to the Inland lake, this lake also features the smell of the salt air, and the sound of waves lapping against the cliffs and beaches can be heard if you just take the time to listen. The most obvious feature of this lake is the small sailboat that apparently has sunk in the center, a lone mast breaking the water line.

The hatchet fell from her fingers as Amber stumbled back, her terrified eyes still focused entirely on the motionless body that lay before her.

She hadn't MEANT to kill him! She never meant to kill ANYONE! That's why she used the blunt side of the hatchet rather than it's sharp edge, to reduce the chances of what she had just done from happening in the first place! She never assumed that the effects of hitting someone on the back of the head would be so... Extreme! A large thump and a comical fall was what she had been expecting, not the horrific sound of his skull cracking followed by him flopping over like a lifeless ragdoll! Even now she could still see the after effects of what she had just done pour out of his head and stain the floorboards beneath him red.

Whu... What have I done?!?

MURDERER! YOU KILLED HIM, THAT'S WHAT!

B-B-But I didn't mean to! I only wanted to stop him, thats all!

AND YOU DID! YOU STOPPED HIM BY KILLING HIM, YOU FUCKING PSYCHO!

Shut up! I.... W-What if he's not dead?!? Maybe he's just unconscious or something?!?

NO HE'S NOT. HE'S DEAD, AND YOU WERE THE ONE WHO KILLED HIM!

STOP IT!

She could hear her own heart pounding, each beat getting louder with every passing second. She felt sick and disorientated, like she was going to throw up at given second. No matter how much she wanted to deny it, deep down she could just tell that Lou hadn't just been knocked unconscious. That she really had just killed a living being, ended another person's life with her own bare hands.

BET YOUR MOMMY MUST BE SO PROUD OF YOU NOW, SLUT!

Stop it...

FIRST YOU SUCK OFF A GUY IN FRONT OF MILLIONS, THEN YOU KILL A GUY BARELY MOMENTS AFTERWARDS!

I said stop it!

I BET SHE CAN'T WAIT TO SEE WHAT HER PRECIOUS LITTLE DAUGHTER GETS UP TO NEXT!

"I SAID STOP IT!!!"

It was at this point that Amber's legs gave away and she fell onto her backside, falling on top of a few pieces of broken glass on her way down. She gave out a shriek of panic as she jumped back onto her feet and scramble over to another corner of the room, holding her legs right up to her chest as tears began to flow down her cheeks.

She couldn't remember another moment of her life when she'd ever been so distressed, so disorientated, so unbelievably traumatised as she was at that very moment. Her memory flashed back to the log, were she had been helpless to save Anthony was being the first one on the island to die. Was this how Karen felt when she realised she had just taken a human life? Was it normal for people to be in such a state of panic the first time they kill someone?!? It never really dawned on her just how shocking the feeling was until the exact moment when it hit her that her act of defence had inadvertently killed someone.

MURDERER! SLUT! KILLER! WHORE! PSYCHOPATH!

"Sh-Shut up! I.... I didn't mean to, I..........."

It was quiet. Sterling tried to move the fingers on his left arm, but found it difficult and the pain spiked in intensity. Blood ran with gravity down his face, arm, chest, and side as he looked from Amber's panicked face to the dead load on the ground. He used his right hand to put his hair back as he looked at the scene not sure what to do.

Sterling opened his mouth to thank Amber for saving his life, but before he could Amber shouted causing him to jump back.

"Amber? Are you oka-" She ran to the corner on the other side of the cabin, and balled up. Sterling took some steps towards her, but decided that it was better to cover up the body instead. He slipped the blanket off the bed, careful to make sure their clothes and other thing didn't fall, and covered the body.

Before doing so he grabbed the hatchet with his index finger and thumb. He didn't want to get too much of the blood on his hands. He wiped it off with the blanket and put it in his bag. He found he wan disconnected from the experience. His arms felt light, yet harder to use. As if they were filled with helium.

The body was covered with a blanket and Sterling stared at it for a while. He'd only seen people do this in movies or on Sotf-TV. It felt odd. Like Sterling was a square peg forced into a round hole. But feeling like he wasn't supposed be here didn't help anything, so he went to fix his injuries.

Taking the first aid kit out of the bag Sterling was nervous. Besides a few injuries he never had to administer it to himself like this. After opening it Sterling took out what he thought he needed: Alcohol Pads, Butterfly closure strips, gloves, bandages, and kept the plastic box open just in case. He went to work on his injuries.

When he was finished Sterling tried to put everything back neatly, but failed leaving the box a hard to shut. The cuts on his face (which started on the middle of his left cheek and ended at his nose), chest, and side only needed the alcohol pads and band aids. Of course applying a band aid to his face was too difficult to bother with, so he left that as it was.

The cut on his arm was more difficult. It was deeper than the others, so he took the box that said Butterfly Closure Stripsand read the back. It seemed like what he needed, so after applying the alcohol (which hurt more after using it each time. It was hard not to scream after each use the pain was so bad) he used three of them on the cut and wrapped it up with the clothe bandage. He put one on the cut under his eye just to be safe.

When he put the box in the bag he pulled out the purple tank top, his hoodie, and the leather vest. He didn't want to put his sweaty shirt back on, and didn't want to be a walking ad for Trojan Condoms. He put the leather vest on first. While it wasn't much some armor was better than none. It was followed by the tank top and his hoodie. He zipped up the bag and looked back to Amber.

She hadn't moved the whole time, and Sterling didn't hear her say anything either. He left her alone for too long.

Sterling got up, and walked over to her. Careful not to scare her he crouched onto his haunches a few feet away and began to speak to her,

"Amber. You're not a bad person. You did what you had to do to save our lives."

Oh god, Wh... What are people going to think once they hear the announcement?!?

THEY'RE GOING TO KNOW THE TRUTH, THAT'S WHAT!

B-B-But it was an accident! I didn't MEAN to kill him!

DOESN'T MATTER, YOU STILL KILLED HIM, DIDN'T YOU? YOU MONSTER!

SHUT UP!

Amber's mind continued to see-saw back and forth like this for the next dozen minutes or so as Sterling bandaged himself up, barely aware of her surroundings as she remained in a trance like state of self-pity and anxiety.

She'd stopped crying ages ago, but her face was still red from all the tears that had flowed down her cheeks. She still, however, held her legs up against her chest as she stared off into the distance at the broken window, almost as if she was expecting another person to come climbing in to finish the job as her mind continued to stress itself over what she had done.

What now?!? What next?!? How could she ever dare to look herself in the mirror again, knowing that she'd bee looking into the face of someone who had killed another living being? Amber abhorred violence with every fibre of her being. Well, real violence anyway. She had never shied away from watching violent images on TV or the internet, and yet she could barely stomach looking at blood in real life. It just... Freaked her out on a completely different level.

So knowing that she'd actually inflicted an act of violence so terrible and irreversible as murder was something that she could't even begin to comprehend before the night's events.

MONSTER! KILLER! WHORE! SLUT! MURDE...

"Amber. You're not a bad person. You did what you had to do to save our lives."

Suddenly, she was brought back to reality the instant she heard someone speaking. She slowly turned her head towards the source of the voice, who as it turned out was exactly the person she was hoping to see...

St... Sterling?

Sterling... If it wasn't for Sterling, she wouldn't be alive right now. Neither of them would be. And vice versa, if she hadn't of killed that boy, then... Then Sterling wouldn't be alive either. That was the reason why she had done what she did in the first place, right? To make sure what happened to Anthony didn't happen to Sterling as well. He was already cut up pretty badly as it was, and the idea of something awful happening to him like that chilled her to the bone.

For a moment, she remained completely speechless. Utterly unable to come up with a single thing to say or do. Eventually, though, a single teardrop fell from her eye. Followed by another, and another, until she found herself crying her heart out again as she jumped from where she was sitting and gave Sterling the biggest hug she had ever given in her entire life as she continued to cry on his shoulder.

"OH STERLING, I'm sorry, I... I didn't MEAN to, you know? But you got hurt, and I didn't want you to end up like Anthony, so I... I..... Oh god!"

Whilst she still felt tremendously guilty for having taken the life of another human being, the fact that Sterling was still here to comfort her made the young girl feel a thousand times better. Because yes, she had killed another person, which was something she had wanted to avoid for as long as possible, even if it was in self defence. But if she hadn't done it, then Sterling would have almost certainly been killed by that perverted psychopath.

And if Sterling had died, Amber had no idea how severe her reaction would be...

"Wh... What about him? What should we do about him?" she asked as her eyes fell upon the covered body in the middle of the room.

While Amber cried on Sterling's shoulder he rubbed her back and nodded while he repeated that it was okay, and that he understood. It wasn't her fault, nor was it the boy's. It was the show that did this to them, but Sterling wasn't about to pull a Tristan Hart and get on a soap box to decry the show at this moment.

His eyes had trailed Amber's to the body as she looked at it. He looked back at her and said,

"I'll take care of him." Giving Amber a slightly tighter hug before he got up, and moved the the stove out from the door. It was harder than before, but he managed as he only had to move it so he could get the door open instead of across the whole god damn floor.

Sterling then grabbed the boy's head and dragged him out. The kid must of weighed more than me! Sterling thought as he did so; not knowing that he did, but only by nine pounds. Not willing to risk going too far out into the night Sterling left him at the side of the cabin.

About to leave before he got two ideas. He removed the blankets and took off the boy's blue bandanna, and put the blanket back on before moving to the back of the house. He was proven right as he found the boy's bag. He must of set it down before breaking in. Sterling picked it up as Amber walked up to him,

"Sterling!" She said in an urgent whisper. "What's taking you so long?" in response Sterling held up the bag and bandanna.

"I thought we could use these." Amber nodded with approval before they went back into the cabin. Amber had cleaned the glass and blood while he had taken out the body. Moving the stove back into position after he entered.

The two stars had hid under the bed for the rest of the night. Sterling had slept shallowly as he had to be ready to awake at any moment. When sun light has started to drift in Sterling felt safe leaving. They shuffled out from under the bed, and decided that since it was light enough they were okay to go outside.

When they got out Amber decided to go for a swim in the lake. Sterling thought it would be good for her as she still looked affected from last night. As she Swam Sterling sat with his back to the cabin with the body on the other side of the structure. His knees were up off the ground spread apart while his feet were tight together on the ground.

Sterling wondered when the announcements would be on, and what they would make Amber out to be. Would they tell the truth with a sick joke in there, or would they only say she bashed the boy on the head and leave the island to think she was playing. Sterling watched Amber as swim swam in the lake as he wondered that and more.

He than spotted a sail boat in the lake. For a skipped heart beat he thought it was a possibility for escape before he saw that it had sunk and he only saw the sail.

"Okay..." Amber softly replied with a nod as Sterling offered to take care of the body, the young girl wiping the tears from her eyes as she straightened herself out.

After Sterling had left, she wasted no time in putting her bra and purple tank top on. After all, she'd revealed herself a little too much as it was already without her going around topless all the time. After briefly searching the cabin for a dustpan and brush, a search which proved to be quite successful, she then quickly began to gather up all the broken shards of glass on the floor and dumping them through the broken window.

As she gathered the shards together, he eyes suddenly found themselves drifting to the vicious looking machete that was lying haphazardly on the floor. The same vicious looking machete that the chubby maniac had nearly used to slice Sterling to pieces with. Out of curiosity, Amber placed her dustpan and brush on the floor and slowly walked up to the dangerous weapon, retrieving it from the floor and examining it in her hand. It reminded her of the machete used in a movie she saw the other week, what was it called again... Friday the 13th: Son of Jason? Something like that.

Either way, the fact of the matter was that there was something about it that frightened her. Something about its sharp edge and deadly potential that seriously creeped her out on an intrinsic level, with the traces of blood from where it had cut Sterling not helping in the slightest. A part of her wanted to throw it out of the window into the middle of the lake, get rid of it before someone else could put it to better use...

...And yet, at the same time, she was also deeply fascinated by it. Almost as if she was in awe at the sheer deadliness of the blade she held in her hand. And as much as she wanted to throw it away, at the same time she wanted to keep it close to her. After all, it was a much more practical weapon than a spear, and she had to make sure that she could defend herself again when the time finally comes. The more she thought about it, the more she realised how stupid it was to throw away something so useful. It was even the perfect size for her! Now that she was interested, the young girl couldn't help but give it a few practice swings to test out its weight. It was light enough for her to use it effectively, but at the same time large enough to actually be useful. For someone as short as Amber, the machete she held in her hand was almost like a short sword as far as size was concerned. Hmm, you know what, maybe i'll keep a hold on this after all... Just in case, of course.

Now, where the heck is Sterling?

She tucked the blade into her belt and walked outside to find messing around with something, and asked him what was taking so long. As it turned out, he had found Sit Fatso's bag and retrieved his bandanna. Cool, those might come in handy. Maybe...

Afterwards, they then headed back inside and re-barricaded the cabin which they had temporarily called home, making sure that nobody could sneak in unaware. At Amber's insistence, the two of them slept underneath the bed, with Amber holding Sterling close to her throughout the entire night.

That night, a myriad of thoughts drifted though her head as she dreamt continuously. Some of them pleasant, such as memories of the night where she returned to Odile's apartment after the two of them narrowly escaped the clutches of a bunch of Filipino thugs. Others were not so pleasant, such as images of Anthony's dead body flashing before her eyes alongside replays of the moment when she heard that insane boy's skull crack underneath her hatchet.

Still, even during the nightmares, she managed to find hope in the form of Sterling's warm embrace. Without him, Amber hadn't a clue how she would cope. Not that she didn't believe that she could look after herself or anything, but that she wasn't entirely sure if she could take all the overwhelming pressure without knowing that Sterling was always going to be there to comfort her. In a way, whilst the two of them were only friends with benefits, she probably cared about him far more than she even realised herself.

She made a mental note at some point to finish what she started after all of this was over...

As they got up the next morning, the first thing that Amber noticed as she and Sterling left their shelter to get some fresh air was just how perfect the lake outside looked in the morning sunshine.

The blue water looked so clear, so impossibly perfect in every way possible. It must have been one of the main attractions back when the resort was still being used. Amber could imagine people flocking from all corners of the island for a chance to take a quick swim in the gorgeous lake which lay right before her.

Come to think of it, she wouldn't have minded going for a quick swim herself.

"Mmm, that lake sure looks inviting. I think I'm gonna go for a quick swim..." she said, shortly before going up onto her tip toes and giving Sterling a brief kiss on the lips. "I won't take too long... Seeya in a bit!"

With a bright smile on her face, Amber made her way towards the small pier and stopped so she could undress herself, seeing as the last thing she wanted was to get her clothes soaked. That being said, she briefly wondered whether or not she should grab a towel for when she got out, but shrugged the thought off as she removed her last sheet of clothing. She remembered finding a bunch of towels in the cabin whilst she was searching for a dust pan and brush, one of which she had used to wipe all the blood of the floor. After her swim, she could always head inside and grab one once she was finished.

With this in mind, the now completely unclothed Amber slowly made her way down the pier, and after testing to make sure the water wasn't too cold wasted no time in diving into the sparkling water.

Thankfully, lake's clear water proved to be just as refreshing as she hoped it would be.

Watching Amber swim naked Sterling allowed himself to relax. To the point that he considered joining her, but who would watch the bags? Sterling was fine just sitting here watching the sights lake. He was getting thirsty and went for his other water bottle when he decided to check the dead boy's bag for a coke.

When he found it he consider if he should let Amber have it thinking, It was her kill.

A chill ran through Sterling after he thought that, and he dropped the can into the bag. That wasn't right. Refusing to think about it any further he reached into his bag, grabbed one of his water bottles, and took a drink. Followed by one of the cliff bars which tasted stale after the chill of the game. After finishing the bar the announcement started, and Sterling's thoughts followed each of the deaths:

So, his name was Lou. Sterling felt like he should felt more, and thought more, but how they showed Amber worried him more. Sterling thought hearing the name would make his co-star's humanity mean more, but Lou's life ended when trying to force Sterling and Amber to have sex in front of him. Then trying to kill them when they didn't comply. God knows what he would've done to Amber if Sterling had died.

Shit. Is Karen ever gonna stop? He already knew the answer was when she either won or died herself, and she was a threat to everyone on the island. Especially to her team mates. As soon as they met the other two members of team purple he had to warn them. He'd talked to Rishi a few times. Good guy.

Vincent killed. Well, that was gonna happen some day. Still, Sterling pictured it would be in some bar fight not on SOTF-TV. Then again who imagined they'd end up here. Sterling wished he knew Isaac more then he had. He was also surprised to find Jonas had actually killed someone. Another boy Sterling didn't know too well.

The next kid who died was unknown to Sterling, as was his killer. They must of been from that other school. Downing in tar was as bad as Sterling thought it could get, and he was wrong. Apparently the next kid was abandoned and killed by a kick to the nuts. Sterling felt sympathy pains as he moved his legs closer together. As if the Zach kid was gonna fly out if nowhere and hit Sterling's boys.

Then Odile's name showed up as a killer, saying she stabbed some girl in the throat. Sterling figured it had to be in self defense. Odile was tricky, but not homicidal. Then again, Karen used to be quiet an not homicidal.

When Leo signed off and they were clear of danger zones Sterling just sat there. So many had died, and more would follow. As happened every season, but not to him. This was new to him as his friends.

Waves of relaxation flowed through Amber's body as she continued to breaststroke through lake, the water's welcoming tranquillity having a soothing effect on her otherwise distraught mind.

After all, part of the reason she decided to go for a swim in the first place was to relax her mind after the traumatic events of the previous night. Even after Sterling comforted her back in the cabin, she still couldn't get the horrible images out of her head. Anthony lying there, face down in the first with a bullet wound in his back. That overweight maniac with the machete, with his perverted grin and grievous intentions, and how she had stopped him at the cost of her own innocence.

But no, here she find serenity in the form of a clear and refreshing swim. She could calm her nerves and cleanse herself of her sins thanks to the reassuring feeling of the lake's cool water against as smooth skin. And perhaps, with any luck, she might even achieve inner peace as she bathed there in the morning sunshine.

She eventually turned herself over and began to gently backstroke her way through the lake, breathing a sigh of relief as she looked up at the beautiful blue sky above her. To think that this island was once a holiday resort for tourists looking for ways to spend their summer. She'd only ever managed to afford going to a place anything like this once in her lifetime, a couple of years ago when her mom actually won some minor lottery and decided to take her and and her bitchy sisters on holiday to Miami. Sure, it wasn't quite as great as she imagined, but at the very least she managed to have her very first alcoholic beverage whilst she was there. Besides, any memory of her family right now was a relaxing thought to some degree.

Funny, before the events of the island, she could never really care less about her sisters or her good-for-nothing mother. But now that there was the prospect of never seeing any of them again, she began to actually kinda miss them. Because deep down, whilst they may have been at each other's back a whole lot, they were still a family. Even if they were more than a little dysfunctional... Argh, damnit, now i'm getting upset again. C'mon Amber, think happy thoughts. Like that time when me and Danisha spent all night watching the Twilight Saga DVD boxset! Or the time I made out with Eloise at Skye's party! Hehe, memories... Ooh, what about the time when me and Sterling decided to try out...

"Good afternoon kids!"

...Son of a bitch.

Just as she was beginning to feel good about herself again, some asshole had to go ahead and remind her that she was in the middle of the deadliest gameshow on earth. She continued to slowly backstroke as she listened with great interest to what he had to say, her eyebrow raising when he mentioned that Team Purple currently had the largest killcount. She wasn't sure whether or not that was something to be proud of, seeing as the only two people in her team who she knew for certain had actually killed anyone was Karen Ruiz and... Well, herself.

The first name to be mentioned was someone by the name of Lou Becker, who as it eventually turned out was the psycho she ended up killing by accident. Knowing the name of the person she had killed did little to calm her already rattled nerves. If anything, it made her anxiety even worse, knowing that the she ended the life of a person with a name and almost certainly a family waiting for them back home. Still, at the very least she could take comfort in knowing that the guys who run this game have a tendency to get details wrong, because she definitely remembered it being a hatchet she used instead of a machete.

Not that it made the memory any less bearable...

Trying to distract herself from recalling that horrific event, she listened with curiosity to the other names that were mentioned, many of whom were ones she knew came from Detroit. Rishi, Isaac, Nick... All people she knew back in Detroit, and now they were all dead. The very thought caused goosebumps at the back of her net, especially seeing as their killers were all people she knew and recognised. There was Karen, of course, who didn't seem content at killing just one of her classmates. Then there was Vincent Sullivan, a boy who Amber distinctly remembered having a mild crush on until she saw what he was like when he got angry. Somehow, she wasn't entirely surprised to hear his name mentioned. Jonas, on the other hand, did take her by surprise. She always assumed he would be too busy smoking pot and hiding in a hole somewhere to go around shooting people. Perhaps she was wrong about him. Hell, maybe she was wrong about a lot of people.

After a handful of names that she didn't recognise got mentioned, she was genuinely startled to hear that Odile had stabbed someone in the neck. Odile?!? As in, OUR Odile? No, that can't be right. Then again, how many people named Odile Jones must there be in the world? Oh god, I can't believe this... How could she have DONE such a thing? There must of been a good reason, there's no way she would buy into this crap so easily. Maybe it was self defence or something? Yeah, that'd make sen-OW!

Amber was more than a little surprised when her head bumped into the wooden mast that dominated the centre of the lake, the young girl looking over the foreboding beam as she rubbed the back of her head. Out of curiosity, she dived underneath the water to take a better look at the fallen boat, perhaps to see if there was some way it could be of some use to her and Sterling.

The small sunken sailboat was painted white, with a long black stripe along its hall. Interestingly enough, there was also a sizeable hole in the bottom of the boat, which was almost certainly what caused the boat to sink in the first place. What caused the hole, however, was something she didn't stick around long enough to find out as she returned to the surface to refill her lungs with oxygen.

Well, that was kinda interesting. Anyway, better go back to Sterling before he starts getting worried...

Seeing Amber swim back Sterling got up, grabbed the bags, and went to meet her on the beach. With one bag on his back and the other two in his right hand. He'd rarely went camping in his life, going a few times as a young boy, but this reminded him of when he and Fin would get up in the morning. Of course there were no naked Ambers in the lakes back then, but you couldn't have everything.

He leaned against a lifeguard chair waiting for Amber as he thought about his family, and how they were doing. Last his parents heard from him was that he was going to play basketball before he was picked up. How soon did they find out? Sterling hoped it wasn't too long. He didn't want them to think that he ran away or something, but was this much better?

His mouth kept a small smile as he thought, fighting to keep from frowning upon Amber's arrival. His brother had been the one to introduce Sterling to the show. His parent's didn't care what they watched, but they had to watch out for Rose. She hated the show and regularly protested against it, so they had to watch it behind her back if they didn't want an ear full. Sterling wondered if he had never watched the show, and had stood against it like Rose, would he still be here.

Based on the fact that he saw Brenda and Tristan in the briefing room he figured it didn't matter. Unless they watched it out of some guilty pleasure, but Sterling doubted it. He decided that the energy spent on thinking why he was here would be better spent on survival.

He called out to Amber,

"How was the swim?"

As Amber emerged from the lake after her relaxing swim, the first thought that immediately came to mind was how surprisingly chilly it was.

Whilst the lake itself had been quite cool and refreshing, now that she was no longer submerged within it's waters she couldn't help but feel ever so slightly cold. The fact that she was stark naked didn't help much, not that she regretted her decision not to get her only set of clothes wet. Sure, there was always the back-up outfit, but Amber felt that putting that on wouldn't be very appropriate at the moment.

Still, all the more reason for her to towel up and get changed before some slack-jawed pervert waltzed along.

"It was quite nice, actually." she replied with a smile to Sterling's question, wiping a strand of wet blonde hair from her eyes as she grabbed the pile of clothes she left on the pier and headed for the cabin. "I'm just gonna get changed inside. Seeya in a bit!"

As she entered the small wooden building, images of the traumatic night immediatly flashed before her eyes. Her and Sterling's passionate lovemaking, their mentor's shocking interruption, the crazed psycho breaking through the window, the moment when she grabbed the hatchet and...

Murderer.

Amber tried to shake the unpleasent thoughts off. Concentrate on getting herself dry rather then dwelling on the past. What was done was done, and there was nothing she could really do about it now apart from moving on.

With a smile on her face, Amber hummed one of her favourite pop songs to herself as she grabbed a clean towel from the closet and preceded to dry herself, her eyes occasionally darting towards the open window every now and again. It was scary to think that it was so easy for someone to break into a building like this, even after Sterling made sure to barricade the main entrance. It had looked so safe and secure when they first came across it, hence the reason they decided to hold up there in the first place. Now though, all Amber could think about as she looked though the glassless window was how indefensible it really was. They were pretty lucky last night that they were attacked by someone who wasn't particularly strong or clever, but what was to stop any of the proper killers out there from sneaking in and slitting their throats in their sleep? The very thought instinctively caused Amber's hand to cover her neck.

Damnit Amber, you're doing it again! I've got to stop getting myself depressed all the time...

In an attempt to cheer herself up, Amber thought back to some of the more pleasant moments of her life, before all this insanity started in the first place. One which immediately came to mind being her first real kiss, which she shared with a boy during 7th grade in the middle of the school playground. She couldn't exactly remember why she'd done it at the time, although a part of her recalled that it was done as a dare rather then for any affectionate reasons. Still, it was a funny enough memory to bring a smile to her face, and if anything went on to remind her of some of her other firsts as well. Such as the first time she ever kissed a girl, during 9th grade with this really cute African-American chick who moved to Milwaukee the following summer. The there was the first time he ever slept with anyone, on the eve of her 16th birthday. It had been such a momentous occasion, one which she still remembered fondly. Then there was the time when she and Sterling slept with each other for the first time, during Aaron's party. She recalled how pleasantly surprised she was when he responded to her otherwise friendly kiss, seeing as before then Amber had always been under the impression that Sterling was either gay or asexual. Of course, later she found out that he was actually bi, and was just confused at the time. Not that Amber was complaining, seeing as she happened to bat for both teams herself anyway.

Still, that didn't make the night they spent together any less special. Sure, it was at some friend's party, but ever since then the two of them had an special friendship that was truly incomparable. One which allowed them to enjoy each other's company without the shackles of a more straightforward relationship. Sure, they liked each other a lot, but that didn't mean that neither of them had other people they were interested in as well. Like a certain Odile Jones for example, who despite having recently been accused of being a killer by the announcement was one of the few people on the island who Amber desperately wished was on the same team as her. The fact that Sterling was on her team was a godsend to begin with, but if Odile was on her team as well then Amber would practically be in heaven. Its just a shame that Bobby wasn't in her team, or Anthony for that matter...

...Anthony...

Memories of the terrible event when Karen had gunned him down began to flood back into her mind, along with the moment when she and Sterling had run away. Abandoning Bobby and leaving him with one of the most dangerous people on the island...

You left him to DIE.

NO! Stop it, not this again! C'mon Amber, remember the time when you and Anna got together to film that video for her webseries? That was such fun, wasn't it? Anthony was so good with the camera, wasn...

...Cameras?

Her eyes suddenly caught the video camera watching her every movement, suddenly reminding her of the fact that she was still naked. Dry, but still completely naked. In front of millions of people, many of whom were probably staring at her bare flesh.

I bet you enjoy every minute of it, you SLUT.

Feeling thoroughly embarrassed and self-conscious, Amber quickly wasted no time in getting changed back into her normal clothes, minus her pink cardigan and purple skirt. As much as she didn't want risk finding somewhere else to call home for a while, she could tell deep down that she wouldn't have the heart to sleep within the hollow walls of this cabin for the night. Too many vivid bad memories, ones which she was so determined to forget but just couldn't shake off no matter what.

As she left the cabin, the first thought that came to mind was how thirsty she was. Specifically, she was beginning to feel thirsty for an ice cold coca-cola. And as it happened, she knew just where she could find one.

She still had a smile on her face when she returned to Sterling, trying as hard as she could to hide her true feelings behind a mask of optimism. "Hey! Could you pass me a coke? I'm dying of thirst here..."

Sterling wasted no time in tossing her a can, which Amber promptly opened and preceded to gulp down. It wasn't exactly ice cold, but god damn did it taste good compared to the lukewarm water she'd been drinking for the past day and a half.

Leaning against the building Sterling watched as Amber drink the Coke, studying her. She seemed to be doing fine since last night, but she may be hiding any distress. This either made her a some kind of psychopath or a stoic, and as long as she didn't go color blind Sterling guess he was fine with it. He hid the thoughts with a relaxed expression on his face.

Oh, that's just great. You go from willing to use someone for sex to a weapon.

Great.

I bet Fin and Rose are real proud of you.

As if to make up for his previous thoughts he considered asking how are she was holding up from last night? Sterling did care, but he didn't feel like he did. Especially with the thoughts that came earlier. Sterling felt like he should've been better than that. Before he asked he decided to let her talk about it when she was ready. In its stead another question came,

"So, are you ready to get out of here?" Sterling didn't want to be near the body, and he's always wanted to see the ocean. "I was thinking about heading to the hotel. Plenty of rooms to hide in," and if we're high enough no one to climb in the winows. "and we may be able to find something useful." He picked up the bags, his left arm sighed with pain.

A slight grimace dusted his face as he picked up two of the bags. He was ready to leave, but not so quick as not to let Amber have some input to the plan.

(( Zachariah Johnston Continued from Just Pay Seperate Packaging and Processing))

He stifled a yawn, blinking a few times. Why was it that you always feel sleepy after waking up? It made no sense! He was tired, so he went to sleep - lying against a tree - and he woke up even more tired!

Mind you, the morning had brought a few choice benefits. A few minuites after being woken up from a noise from the nearby cabin, which he had thought about sleeping in, but eventually decided against, as every wanderer would try and hole up for the night in there. He didn't want to get offer in his sleep, that'd be embarrassing.

What had he been thinking about? Something to do with waking up...

Oh yeah, after he'd dragged his weak, weak body off the ground, he'd been greeted by a really, really pretty girl swimming in the lake that he hadn't noticed before.

She had been naked.

It had been his first time seeing a naked girl. A real, actual girl. If he was honest, he'd always fantasised that it'd be Her, but she was almost as good.

He'd chastised himself for his wandering eyes, but carried on watching, after all, there was no feeling there, it was more like watching porn than anything else.

A ghost of a smile lit up his face before he orchestrated it back into the scared, worried expression he had worn before. His bandanna was on his wrist bore Marions bandanna, his real one in his bag.

He had planned this for a few minuites now, formulating what he was going to do, creating a character in his mind, a charachter for him to play.

It was almost funny, he'd always wanted to LARP

"Alright, time to meet the pornstar" he said, his voice barely above a whisper.

He was about to enter the clearing and call out to the pair, but... They seemed restless, agitated, and they were moving.

This, and a hundred other little things conspired against him and he lost his nerve. He moved back again. They might notice a little bit of movement, but it'd be fine, hed follow them, and when the time felt right he'd introduce himself.

He could wait.

If there was anything he knew about, it was waiting.

Amber looked towards the horizon as she continued to drink her beverage, contemplating whether or not it would be a good idea to look for Bobby again.

After all, whilst she'd give anything to know whether or not he was alright, a small part of her was afraid of how he'd react seeing as she and Sterling had essentially abandoned him to die at Karen's hands. She'd seen what Bobby was like when he was riled up, such as during Skyler's party when he nearly ended up beating Devonte into a pulp. From all she knew, Bobby might be planning some brutal revenge for being betrayed so cruelly. Wait, what am I thinking? Bobby would NEVER do such a thing! He's too... Too..... I don't know, he's just not the kinda guy who would DO such a thing!

Amber tried to shake the awful thought off by wondering how some of her less favourable classmates were taking this situation. Devonte was probably making an ass off himself and annoying everyone around him, as usual. It wouldn't of surprised her if Jaszmine was acting like her typical bitchy self either, although seeing as Anthony had been HER friend as well Amber suspected that she probably wasn't taking his death very well either. And Tiffany? Christ knows how she was taking this situation. With any luck, she'd of learnt to loosen up a bit after her uptight behaviour ends with some lunatic chasing after her with a mache...

......

....Goddamnit.

After inadvertently reminding herself once again of that horrific night, Amber took one last slurp of the coke before crushing the depleted can in her hand and tossing it behind her. Thankfully, Sterling started to suggest that they head towards the resort hotel, allowing her to put those dark memories at the back of her head as she nodded in approval.

"Yeah, that sounds like a great idea!" she replied, making a half-hearted attempt at sounding like her usual cheerful self rather then the traumatised girl who had struck someone on the back of their head with a hatchet.

She noticed how Sterling seemed to be in pain and offered to help, which Sterling politely refused. Amber hadn't fully realised it at first, but Sterling had been really hurt during his scuffle with Lou. Not too badly, from the looks of things, but enough to make Amber concerned for his safety. After all, Sterling was one of her few friends who she knew for certain could make it back home with her. If he died because of her, well...

...Amber didn't want to even think about it.

"Well, no time of the present, lets... Wait, actually, hang on a sec. I think I left something in the cabin."

Wasting no time, Amber jogged back to that dreaded cabin and opened the door, searching it from head to tow for the item that she was seeking. Goddamnit, its gotta be around here SOMEWHERE! I can't believe I dropped it whilst I was putting my clothes back on... Ahah, there it is!

Amber couldn't help but grin to herself as she picked up the machete and stared at her reflection in it's blade, admiring her lovely blue eyes for a moment before tucking deadly the weapon into her belt.

Just in case... You never know when some crazy lunatic is just waiting around the corner.

With this in mind, Amber returned to Sterling and the two of them left the haunted building behind, neither of them wishing to ever return for as long as they lived.

He watched them do normal things. It was weird how normal they seemed, despite the horrors around them.

It was almost creepy. But then he realised what this meant for him. They hadn't absorbed the game's impact on people yet. They were, in a way, innocent. This made his plan a little smoother. He would be able to pass as normal for a while. He knew a lot about pretending to be normal.

There was a lot of pressure. To conform to everyones standards. To be what everyone wanted you to be. He had some grasp on it, he wasn't stupid, and he wasn't crazy. Well, he hoped he wasnt crazy. But he could pass by an untrained eye, hopefully. Hell, he probably wouldn't have to be all that good at it. They might chalk it up to the stress of being given a weapon, pointed towards your classmates and being told to make merry with the murder.

He noticed the girl admiring herself in the blade of what looked like a machete. Well, a machete or a kukri, something in that vein.

She was a narcissist. That might be useful. He just had to interject a compliment in every now and again and shed be on his side. It wouldn't be that easy, of course, but the basics were there. He'd seen it done before.

He followed the pair, staying far enough behind that he wouldn't be noticed, but close enough that he would be able to pick up their conversation.

Next time they stopped, he'd enact his ploy.

When he heard the effort behind the enthusiasm in Amber's voice Sterling wondered if he missed it before, or what. Before he could nod Amber was off to the cabin, which left Sterling wondering if he was being watched. Sure, a more literal person douche would say something like, "Well of course you're being watched, you're on SOTF-TV!" and laugh like he was some kind of witty comedian. Hopefully getting a bullet to a head soon after.

Still, Sterling felt eyes on him and Amber, and they weren't from the cameras. Still didn't mean much. It was the times he felt safe that were dangerous. Laughing with Amber, Bobby, and Anthony when Karen came in and shot at them.

Still owe her for that. Sterling thought with retaliation.

Then Lou barging in on them. Thinking about made Sterling feel sicker each time. Cameras were different from eyes, and even thinking about complying was...

No.

Just.

No.

Thankfully Amber came back with the machete, and they were on their way.

Sterling decided he wouldn't feel too bad if the cabin was erased from his memories.
