Siberian Breaks

Open: Day 4.

The forests and tropical air suddenly gives way to the cold of the frozen north thanks to snow machine which can be heard chugging away for miles. Snow on all sides, there is a small abandoned lodge, a rental booth, and a ski lift leading up a large mountain. The ski lift is non-operational, the motor obviously purposely destroyed. The only way up is a small railed path, slick with ice and snow.

[[GLD4: Shawn Morrison Continued From: The Bagman's Gambit.]]

Traveling their way back up the island to the ski resort didn't seem as difficult as the night before. For one thing, he was better rested. He had a basic idea of where to go to get there, it wasn't dark as the night, and the morning air and the clouds kept it cool enough to travel without getting tired from the sun. The ski resort too, didn't seem anywhere as eerie in the daylight. In fact it looked like quite cheery. The snow machine didn't seem to be on at this second, so it was somewhat easier to travel up the slope and toward the lodge, although still a bit cold, but fortunately they had gone through colder, the day before.

There was a railed path going up the hill that Shawn hadn't noticed in the darkness yesterday, which made getting to the lodge much more convenient. The door to the lodge was still open, as they had left it, a build up of snow over the course of the night was piled up near the main entrance of the lodge and scattered a bit more around it. He needed something to shovel the snow out of the way, when he remembered the frying pan that was still in his bag. Reaching in, he grabbed the handle of the pan, pulled it out and began to break down the snow with a few hits of the skillet. When it was broken down enough, he used it to scoop out the excess to the outside. It wasn't a long process, at least, just about 10 minutes or so.

When it was all clear, Shawn stepped in, to check first, just as he did previously before. As he expected, there didn't seem to be anyone there, otherwise the door would have been closed. Now he just needed the bag.

"All's clear." He called out to Mae as he walked over to the area where he remembered leaving the bag. The area where they had found Peter's body.

It was easy to find, as the floorboards were still matted with the dry blood, which they didn't have the time to clean up as they planned to, after the ghost showed up and Bobby ran off. There it was; Zach's bag, resting on a side counter nearby.

"Rad. It's still here." Shawn said as he stepped over to grab it with his free hand.

He had forgotten that the bag weighed like it was filled with bricks and his arm dropped with it. Shawn readied himself again, and this time grabbed it with more power, before putting it on a table in the main room of the lodge. Then he spotted something else.

A black hat, a fedora to be precise. Shawn picked it up, dusted it off and carried it with him as he shut the open door and went back to the main room with the fireplace, with Zach's stuff.

Shawn held the fedora by the crown and walked over to where Mae was before placing it over his head.

"How do I look?" The young man said as he posed with a cheeky grin. Anything to lighten the mood after the cruise ship.

(Mae St. Clair continued from The Bagman's Gambit)

Mae didn't mind being back at the ski resort, she felt as though colder climates suited her even though she had grown up in Texas her entire life, she had loved skiing in Aspen, and enjoyed the area very much. They hadn't spent as much time here before, and was glad to be back....even if they were sorely down in numbers.

It was good that they had found Zach's bag, all that she had done for nothing...that would have been almost too much. Right now it was easy to keep going, pushing everything to the back of her mind, but at the moment she knew at least that there was the collar, that she and Shawn could escape somehow maybe...if they couldn't win.

She allowed herself to wander, but always making sure she could at least hear where Shawn was, until she heard him come back, a black fedora perched on top of his head. He seemed proud of himself, and he looked utterly adorable. Mae couldn't help but smile.

"How do I look?"
he asked her. She smiled and walked over to him, gently reaching up to touch the brim of his hat.

"I think it suits you, very dashing." There was a pause and she felt as though she wanted to kiss him again, but she wasn't sure. Instead she stood there, looking up at him. She wanted nothing more than to press herself close to him and hold on, but now wasn't the time. Maybe if they survived there would be time.

So she allowed her fingertips to brush his cheek on the way down, lingering lightly, she clearing her throat and looking away.

((Renée Carlson continued from Wrong Direction))

They hadn't found Tim in the forest. Hadn't found him anywhere else, either. All things considered, it was a fairly large island, and the odds of finding anyone, let alone someone they were expressly searching for, had to be quite low. Renée wondered how many people were even left alive. It had to be getting down there. Her estimate was twenty, with maybe two thirds of them killers. That wasn't, of course, to say that everyone would be playing. Rather, as time wore on in these games, even the good people found themselves making more and more unpleasant choices. She had watched the show enough to memorize many of the stats, and knew that it was rare indeed that anyone even made it to the finals without getting their hands dirty.

And yet, no one in Renée's group had killed. Maybe no one had even been in a real fight. She was somewhat proud of that fact, but also a little worried. They were out to find Tim, a goal which, if accomplished, would likely end in violence. They were dealing with an ever-decreasing number of other people, many of whom had to be getting paranoid by now. There were so many opportunities for something to go wrong, to screw up the most important thing of all, which was getting as many people out alive as possible.

That didn't even touch the fact that she didn't have any clue where to begin trying to escape. There was nothing obvious this round. She suspected that the trick to the collars, if there even was one, would be tough to figure out. There was already a gimmick this season, so there was no real narrative need to allow an escape. Doing so would just add to the confusion. In all likelihood, they hadn't even expected the ten kill rule to come near being in play, and there was still no telling if that goal would be met. They might just declare any escapees fair game for everyone, including their own teammates. Count them double towards the ten kills, maybe. It wasn't easy to get out of a game without the executives' implicit permission. Before, Renée had thought it was quite magnanimous of them to allow the escapes. Now, she wished they were a bit more generous.

It was too much, too much to figure out, too much to deal with. She was over her stint as an attempted hero. She'd done nothing, helped nobody. Were it not for Mason and Lexi counting on her, Renée would probably have gone off somewhere to sulk by herself.

But they needed her, maybe even nearly as much as she needed them, and so they had stuck together, and she had suggested they check the ski resort again. Tim knew it, knew it was safe. He might have left things here. He'd fled pretty quickly. Beyond that, Renée thought that maybe they could do something for Peter, bury him or something. Of her original team, only Tim the traitor was still alive. She'd failed Kathy and Peter and Lynn. Maybe she could still manage to grant them, or at a minimum one of them, a little dignity. It was a sorry consolation prize, but at least it was something.

Besides, it was still a good place to stick things out. It was isolated. Players would be hard pressed to ambush them once they were inside. It could be a good place for regrouping once again, this time without the corrupting influence of a latent psychopath.

The doors to the lodge were closed, but the prints leading to them still looked fairly fresh, and were headed in but not back out. Someone was here. Renée gestured to Mason and Lexi, pointing out the tracks, and mouthed, "Be ready."

Then, she walked up, knocked at the door, and called out, "Is anyone there?"

(Alexis Allwell continued from Wrong Direction)

Lexi arrived with Mason and Renee in the woods where she had been threatened by Tim. There was no sign of him, or the other guy. Or really much of a struggle, could they really have managed to avoid bloodshed? From Renee's description, Tim would have just shot him like a maniac. She did say he was one of the most dangerous. Lexi wouldn't argue that he was dangerous, but he was too dramatic. He wasn't as scary as Karen who just shot out of nowhere, Tim had threatened her first instead of just shooting her.

Not that she hadn't been scared.

Then they traveled to the snow covered mountain she had avoided when she ran from Tim the first time. As they climbed it was freezing! "Oh G-God I'm freezing!" Then she remembered the clothes she had seen stuffed in the bottom of her bag. "Just a second, I'm gonna layer u-up." The shiver was influencing her voice, making her sound scared. She wasn't scared now! It was just cold!

First thing she found was a purple t-shirt from Abercrombie. She pulled it on over her yellow blouse, which had been splattered with mud in the rain forest, grass stains on the plains, and had sand from the beaches. She wouldn't be wearing that if she got home. On closer inspection her jeans were in similar state, with a hole starting to form over her left knee. Then, she pulled a green t-shirt from her pack and put it on the other two shirts. A rare good occasion for being flat, she could wear three shirts without getting too tight.

That's when Lexi found another article at the bottom of her bag. She pulled it out. A black dress with slits up the sides? Don't they do fanservice sometimes? I remember a guy once got this awesome leather outfit, hot... She needed to focus. She pulled the dress on over her other clothes, which of course, were still visible because the dress was so revealing. She dug around a little more and threw the matching heels down the mountain. Her flats would be fine, even if she looked like a fashion monstrosity now.

Not that it mattered, her makeup was gone by now, and her spray tan was probably going too, well unless she had picked up a real tan.

"Okay I'm dressed," she was slightly warmer now. It was still freezing, but she was a little better. She hoped they wouldn't stay long, although she thought Renee had said something about a lodge at some point.

Once they got closer, Renee pointed out tracks of people. Hopefully they were friendly, and Lexi watched Renee take the lead by knocking on the door.

At this point a knocking at the door, sent Shawn on high alert, out of the sort of 'enchantment' that Mae had a particular knack for. His teenage hormones might have even taken over in normal circumstances, to give her a heck of a passionate kiss, from the way she looked at and touched him. But this was anything BUT a normal circumstance.

They were on Sotf-TV... Television. His mind kept going back to the thought that their teenaged romance was playing off on screen, how that camera from back at the restrooms of the coastal lake had closed up on them when they had their "almost kiss" and just thinking about the millions watching it all happen at home, made him feel extraordinarily uncomfortable. His eyes wandered, looking for a camera and of course the mounted moose head above the fireplace had cameras where the eyes used to be, watching. Staring.

He continued to keep quiet, debating the idea of opening the door or not. He decided he'd wait for a moment and talk with Mae about what they should do. Maybe they were just hearing things, anyway? He kept his voice low anyhow.

"Mae." He whispered. "I wanted to ask you earlier: I think I saw you decapitate that girl at the resort beach and I'm guessing that was her collar in Zach's bag. What was that all about?" His tone wasn't accusing, but more akin to a student asking a teacher to elaborate on something.

Then the voice called out, abruptly. There really was someone out there. Whoever it was, she was female and due to the barrier between the wooden doors, her voice was muffled and not easily identifiable at first. However, she did knock and call out first, which meant she probably wasn't dangerous. Still, he had to be careful.

"I'm going to check who's out there. Be right back." He said as he left Mae with all the supplies and weapons, except for Jake's loaded pistol, which he kept hidden within his blazer, his fingers still on the handle.

After approaching the door, step by step, he came to a stop a few feet away.

"Yeah." He responded from his side of the door. "Come in. Just, uh, don't try anything sneaky."

Shawn paused, took a deep breath, adjusted the fedora, pulled out the gun and buttoned up his blazer.

((Timothy Walker continued from A Generation Lost in Space))

The walk back to the place where it all started going to hell was a little longer than he had expected. It surely didn't help that he was mostly exhausted, weak from hunger, and completely mad. But he was determined to make it there.

He'd failed all his other objectives in this game. He'd failed to establish himself as a threat, failed to protect Kathy, failed to get revenge, failed at everything. He wasn't going to fail at something so simple as getting his hat back.

But luck was just not on his side in this game. As he approached the Ski Resort he could see people at the door. He wasn't entirely sure if they were real or just part of his imagination. But there was no reason to take chances. He pulled the knife out and readied himself.

"Quick and easy. Once in the back, once in the neck, down for the count." Simple, logical, sane. "Maybe a couple more in the face for the kids back home." That wasn't so sane, but it sounded like fun. He grinned wide. Sounded like a lot of fun.

All he had to do was wait for the opportune moment. Surely there was no harm in doing that. And what better time to strike dramatically then just at the moment of assumed safety as the figures entered the Resort. Ironic? Perhaps. Sure to win points with the fans? Definitely.

It was more than a little cold, but Tim barely noticed. The fires of a waning killer were still burning enough inside him to keep him oblivious to the cold. He let out a breath. Another. It was almost time to make his comeback.

((Mason Ross continued from Wrong Direction))

It was climbing up the mountain that made Mason realize he would never, ever play for a Midwestern team.

It wasn't just because he loved the Spurs, and he had a thing for Texas. It wasn't because he particularly hated the Midwest (but fuck the Bulls). It wasn't even that he couldn't get good food (Texas barbecue was the shit).

It was the cold. The soul-freezing, mind-numbing cold (of course, he was exaggerating in his head, but this was still ridiculous).

It didn't help that he had on a tanktop with nothing underneath. Seriously, who fucking had a resort with rainforests AND fucking snowy mountains?

He was shivering as he followed his cohorts up. He was trying to warm himself up by rubbing his bare arms with his hands, but it didn't work as well as he would have liked. The only thing that succeeded in heating his blood a little was Lexi putting on that dress. Not like she was doing it the right way (with that slit riding all up on some naked thigh), but his imagination supplied the details.

"Nice." He said to her through clenched teeth.

He was about to complain about their trek when they reached the ski lodge and Renee (knocked? Really?) on the door. To his surprise, someone answered with words and not bullets. Someone talked on the other side.

"I'm over six feet tall, buddy. I don't think I could be sneaky if I tried."

Mae snapped out of it as soon as someone knocked on the door. Shawn, of course, jumped into action as usual, buttoning his blazer and pulling out a gun. She stared at him, hoping he wouldn't notice.

It was just so striking. Watching him like that. She gripped her own gun and moved to his side. She was his partner, team member. She just didn't want there to be any more killing.

"Hopefully it'll be someone...."

Friendly?

Not murderous?

Not Karen?

Not anyone?

She thought of Panya and her attempts at the theatrics. Odile and her obvious manipulations. Mae had stamped out Panya easily enough, and with Shawn by her side she could do whatever she needed to do. She had to think this way, think this way or die.

When Shawn called out to the people on the other side, she held her breath, and was surprised to hear someone speak....rather sardonically actually.

"I'm over six feet tall, buddy. I don't think I could be sneaky if I tried."

Over six feet tall? There weren't that many people out there, Jake had been one of them and now he was dead. There was another kid at school who had been so tall...Mason his name was? This of course, was implying that the person talking was even from Texas.

"Who's there?" She asked. "Identify yourselves."

Mae St. Clair, laying down the law.

The voice that told them to come in sounded somewhat familiar. The caution was a good sign. If it had been a trap, the boy would likely have been more welcoming, or wouldn't have replied at all. Mason responded with his usual humor, and it didn't earn them anything worse than a grumpy call for identification from someone else inside. That was good. They now knew that there were two people there. Renée could have sworn she knew both voices, too, but her ears were freezing and everything was muffled and she didn't quite care enough to argue with them. There was no reason not to share their identities. None of them had been on the announcements.

"It's Renée Carlson," she said. "I'm with Mason Ross and Lexi." It was only now that she realized she'd either forgotten or never learned Lexi's surname. "Lexi" could even be a nickname, but she was pretty sure nothing like it had been on the announcements.

She stepped closer to the door, not worried about being blown away now, not with two of them on the other side. It seemed unlikely a group, even if they were on the same team, which seemed at least somewhat probable, would be cold enough to shoot her down and also stupid enough to assume they'd be safe from her allies if they did so. The real question, though, was what to do now. She'd been ready to head straight in, but that now seemed inadvisable. Someone in there was being careful, so the only wise thing was to return the favor.

"Who are you?" she asked. It wasn't Tim, that was sure. Definitely someone from SDA, though. The accents told her that. She had a suspicion she even knew who it was, but she wasn't going to get her hopes up for nothing. Better not to be disappointed.

(GM'ing approved)

Lexi listened to the conversation between Renee, Mason, and whoever was on the other side. He sure sounded familiar, but she couldn't remember who. It was pretty obvious he went to the school though, she hadn't run into any Detroit boys the whole game, wait except that one guy who left. But she was pretty sure it wasn't him, especially because of the accent.

Mason was being funny with his reply. It was nice, having someone who was collected and funny instead of "OMG KAREN IS GONNA SHOOT ME" like she was. Well she tried to do more than that, but sometimes when a certain killer kept showing up she freaked out a little. More than a little. Right.

It was okay to go in? Good. But then a girl's voice asked who they were and Renee gave the specifics.

Then the door swung open, and it was Shawn! oh geez he's alive and savedmylifeandyay. "Shawn!" She pushed forward past Renee and immediately pulled into a hug with Shawn. He's alive and he feels nice and I don't get hugs and... Oh...Mae. Lexi pulled away from the hug she had forced on Shawn. Her cheeks were burning.

Could this get any worse?

When he looked up again, Shawn realized that Mae had followed him and was now by his side. That's right, they were a team; he had to stop leaving her be like that. He looked at her and nodded.

The response Shawn got from the person outside was far from one that he had expected. For one, he was fairly sure he had been speaking to a female earlier. This voice was a guy's voice, otherwise he was right the first time and this was a second voice. The other thing was this voice was pulling out words tinged with some slight humor, making Shawn chuckle silently. He could even swear he knew that tone.

Then Mae called out, a serious tone to contrast the kidding like vibe from the last one. She asked for their visitor(s) to identify themselves and the voice which spoke up this time was the first one, the female voice. Which meant there were more than one person outside. Shawn kept himself silent and still, listening closely to their answers, almost putting his ear to the door, but standing to the side in case the worst were to happen yet again. Jake's pistol was at ready in his hand. He wasn't as familiar with it as he was with Alicia's pump action shotgun, but he guessed that maybe it were easier to use and more practical with it's size.

"It's Renée Carlson."

Eyebrows up.

"I'm with Mason Ross and Lexi."

He let his gun hand drop, and felt himself relax. It was Renée, the very same person he had been looking for the whole game! Instead of finding her, she found them. Talk about luck!

The other voice, the male one was Mason Ross - made sense with the jokey vibe, now that he thought of it. The guy was pretty lax. And Lexi... Alexis. He was glad she was safe after Karen's attack over at the West Beach and even found some more allies. Come to think of it, they were ALL Silver Dragon Academy kids out there. They could be trusted - at least more than the Detroit kids anyway. This was good, they could team up and figure out what to do, together.

Shawn put his hand to the knob and pulled the door open, just as Renée asked who they were. Well, they would see for themselves.

Three familiar faces, staring back at him in unison. He started to say a "Hey" in greeting, but was stopped when the girl at the rear, Alexis, yelled out... "Shawn!"

Before he knew it, Shawn found himself in big old bear hug, or maybe tiny teddy bear hug, all things considered.

"Uh... Hey, Alexis. Nice to see you too." He patted her back. "Glad to see you're okay, after what happened last time."

Then she let go. Nervous-like almost. He looked over at the rest of them.

"Glad to see you guys are all, okay."

So the people all started heading in, and since they didn't open the door themselves that meant there had to be more people inside. Things were becoming more complicated by the moment. Tim eyed them intently, already deciding that his initial approach wouldn't work. It would have been more fun though.

He'd have to try to stealth his way there, all ninja-like. If that ninja were an insane Texan kid in a gangster suit with dried blood all over him, that is. He got down as low as he could, and started making his way as slowly as possible to the entrance. He hoped the snow would cover his advance, because if not then he was going to be making the most suspicious target ever.

His breathing was low and shallow, he wasn't sure how much anyone could hear out there in the cold, but he wasn't going to give himself away so easily. He crept and crept, inching ever closer.

"Closer, closer. The fun starts when I get closer."

It was a Silver Dragon reunion, and Mason was happy for the change in mood.  And temperature.  Soon as the door opened, he was inside, rubbing his bare arms up and down to try to bring back the feeling.

The two inside were Mae and Shawn, two kids he had seen around campus every so often when he wasn't in the gym trying to keep his dreams alive.  Most notable to him about Mae was that she was kinda hot.  Something about dancers; that whole grace and athleticism was nice.  Mason also knew Shawn was kind of a hippie, which was ok by him.  Hippies tended not to fuck with you.

Lexi was hugging Shawn hippie, then nervously backing away, and Mason wasn't too cold and spaced out to notice that, or the mild glance she threw the dancer's way.

Were Shawn and Mae an item or something?  He didn't keep tabs on his classmates.  He figured he'd just assume so for now.  The fact that there was something that could possible create tension unnerved him just a little.

"Tell me this motherfucker has a hot tub."  He said, looking around what little he could see of the resort.  "If it does, I'm up for a dip.  I'll even wear my leopard print thong."

Mae's sardonic eyebrow was working overtime as first this girl came out of nowhere and hugged Shawn, practically squealing like a hyperactive fangirl. Mae wasn't jealous, that would be silly, as she didn't have any sort of claim on Shawn's affections or any such things.

Lexi's cheeks burned as she backed away slowly from him. Mae didn't care. Shawn could hug whoever he wanted. Mae could hug whoever she wanted. It wasn't like there was a giant hugging monopoly or anything. Mae was pretty sure that everyone could hug anyone and she wouldn't even care.

Her nails hug into her palms.

She recognized Mason slightly, he was always in the gym doing something or other. Very athletic. Her mother would approve of him most definitely.

Then he opened his mouth about the hot tub. Then about the leopard print thong. Red flushed to her cheeks immediately, but since Shawn was going around hugging every woman on the eastern seaboard what was the problem with her having a reaction?

"I haven't really taken a look around," she replied. "But I think I still have my polka dot bikini."

The people in the lodge turned out to be Shawn and Mae, people Renée knew from school. More than that, Shawn was someone she knew enough about to trust. He was, after all, the hero from the party, the boy who'd risked his life to save Mae. He and Mae did both have kills, as far as Renée could remember, but not enough to be worrisome. Besides, the way he handled being hugged by Lexi showed that he wasn't some psychopath. He was the same as always, and that meant he was exactly who they needed on their side.

Renée decided she'd maybe have to figure out his history with Lexi later. It sounded like there was a story there. Maybe she'd just forgotten what had transpired.

Mason kept up his usual stream of jokes, something Renée was used to laughing about. Mae decided to play along too. Good. It was good to keep spirits high, good to keep everyone laughing, even though their classmates were dropping at an alarming rate. It would be best to let Mason handle the fronting here. He could keep everyone's morale up, and maybe Renée could pull Shawn aside and find out what all had happened and whether he had any idea what was going on. It was getting late, heading towards announcement time again. This would be the midnight announcement, the fifth overall. Hopefully it would shed some light on everything.

For now, though, Renée just smiled and said, "I'm glad to see you all doing well. I didn't bring a swimsuit, so I think I'll be skipping the pool party."

Not that they were actually going to strip and hang out in a hot tub. At least, Renée assumed they weren't. People had done far, far stranger things on the show before, though, come to think of it. She'd say something if it looked like they were all headed towards a security hazard.
