Meet Cute

Phase 1 (0-12 Hours), Private

The First Missionary Church, located at the center of town, is the oldest and largest building in Cabeza del Dragón, originally constructed by Spanish missionaries who first settled the area. The church has since gone through numerous renovations, although much of its original architecture has been preserved. The main doors open directly into a high-ceilinged interior area, primarily filled with two columns of pews. There are six stained glass windows flanking the pews three to a side, with a seventh larger window depicting the crucifixion of Christ located behind a fancifully-carved pulpit and above an ancient organ that despite the outward appearance of its old pipes is still capable of producing some bars. Through a door situated behind the main pulpit and alongside the organ is the priests' quarters, which is made up of a small combined kitchen and living area, study, and bedroom. There are many books lining the shelves of a bookcase, but there are gaps and disturbed dust where some texts have been removed.

((Rodney Vasicek continued from América rompió mi corazón))

Rodney pushed the doors to the church open and stumbled inside. Right as he entered, he fell to his knees, panting. He looked up and saw a large, stained glass depiction of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Rodney's family wasn't very religious; America was their religion, and the General was their God. But Rodney had always found religious imagery and iconography fascinating. There was a lot of drama and passion conveyed, so he liked to read about it whenever he could.

Rodney got back to his knees and started to walk to the pulpit. It had been an hour or so since he had run away from the Trucking Road. He never saw Bishop as he fled from the shooter, so Rodney had to accept that he was elsewhere. Rodney had no clue where Bishop could have gone off to, so Rodney resigned to knowing that he may never see Bishop again. It was hard to believe, especially since Rodney may have to wonder what would have happened if they stayed together. Maybe they'd have found Laurie and the three of them could have helped each other through the game. And when they reached the end...

Well, that wasn't worth thinking about. That wasn't something Rodney wanted to think about anyways.

Rodney walked to the pulpit for a closer look at the stained glass Christ. He noticed the massive organ by it and realized he was still clutching the orgel since he took off running. He placed the orgel on the pulpit, then wound it up. He let it go, letting the first few notes of "America the Beautiful" play.

Rodney listened to the song played and stared up at the depiction of Jesus Christ.

"Um...I don't know if you're looking out for people like me and everyone else here," Rodney said to the visage of a religious figure, trying his best to speak up so the figure could hear him, "but if you are, could you please help me? Help all of us? I don't know how you work, but um...please..."

Rodney didn't get a response from the figure. Instead, all there was was the little box singing about spacious skies and amber waves of grain.

((Roz's body didn't like it but she was here now))

Roz's vision was black. She could see nothing but a small dot in the distance. She assumed it was because of the blood loss since she started to feel numb everywhere. It started from her fingers and toes and it slowly made her way toward her chest.

She learned something about that in health class, the body did that to protect the organs in the chest like the heart and the lungs. She recall the board showing the blood cells pointing toward the chest of the drawn figure and the extremities becoming bluer, to symbolize the lack of blood. It was exactly what was going on.

Maybe she could have made it better if she gave herself first aid but she couldn't do anything after shooting the boy she didn't the name of. She was only able to stumble away, leaving a trail of blood. It didn't help she stared at her bloody hands, wondering what she had done. It wasn't her to kill someone. She didn't want to kill people yet she just killed a boy. She wondered how many people she would need to kill.

That's if she survives her leg injury. She walked in one direction until she hit something. A door, she pushed it opened and fell to the ground. She tried to crawl in a direction but she only hurt. She heard music. Maybe she was on her way to heaven, maybe God forgave her. She didn't believe in him but if there could be one thing that could comfort her, it would be a greater force that isn't cruel.

Rodney turned away from the pulpit as he heard the doors to the church open. He turned to face the door, his hands grasping the edge of the pulpit. He was prepared for it to be the shooter from the horchata stand, who managed to follow him all the way to the church and was prepared to finish the job they started earlier. Rodney was prepared to die with no resistance, the House of God becoming his crypt.

Instead, it looked to be a girl, who entered the church and immediately fell to the ground. Rodney gasped as he saw the girl. She looked to be seriously hurt as she struggled to crawl.

Rodney didn't even hesitate. Back home, he was sure his dad and brothers were encouraging him to get away from the girl or to finish her off quickly. He didn't care. This was a young woman who needed help, and who was Rodney to turn away a girl who needed help?

He hurried down from the pulpit and ran up to the girl.

"H-hey...l-let me h-help you," he stammered out as he approached her.

Roz heard a soft voice. Was she losing her hearing now? She looked up, moving her bangs away from her eyes with the air coming out of her mouth. It was a guy's voice, very quiet and small and stuttering like a child's but with the voice of a man.

She tried to sit up straight, but her right hand caught her braid yanking her head toward the ground. It hurt her neck but she tried again, sitting like a mermaid on a rock looking at a lost sailor. She wiped her sweaty forehead, smearing some blood on her as she stared at the boy.

"You're goin' to help me?"

She didn't care if he was lying or what was his definition of help. Whether he was going to put her down or fix her, she just wanted to feel horrible. She dragged herself toward the boy. She hated being vulnerable, she wanted to stay on top but instead she stoop at her lowest.

Rodney stared at the girl on the ground as she looked up at him. She was a minority, and was probably someone he had seen at school before. He probably never noticed her because he never really looked at anyone in the halls, something he now massively regretted. She had olive-colored skin and long, black hair in a braid. He couldn't help but think the girl was kind of cute as she asked if he was really going to help her.

But he couldn't think about that. The girl was bleeding and he had to do something.

"Y-yeah," he said. "I'll help."

He quickly looked around the church. There weren't many places to help someone who was bleeding to death. But he had to do something. This cute girl needed his help, and he had to do something. He looked back to the girl.

"I...I'm sorry..."

Rodney had never touched a girl before. They always seemed somewhat intimidating to him in the past. But he remembered the stories his father told him about combat medics and the images he had seen of soldiers carrying the wounded. If this girl was to survive for a little longer, he had to do something.

He quickly moved to the girl's side and got on one knee. He lifted one hand under her leg and another around her waist. He hoisted her off the ground, turning her so she was at least looking up. He tried not to look at the girl as he hurried down the aisle of the church and towards the pulpit.

He quickly walked around the pulpit as the last few notes of the orgel played out. He then moved behind the pulpit and laid the girl on her back. The space behind the pulpit had more uncluttered space, so it made the most logical sense to work there. Rodney then pulled his bag over and started rifling through it.

"Okay..." he said trying to find the first aid kit. "I know some stuff about first aid... not a lot, but some. So...um...I'll see what I can do."

Roz could only tug softly on his clothes. Like a baby holding the pinky of a grown up, she held it instinctively and she didn't want to let go. She felt if her hands stopped gripping the collar of the boy, she'd fall into an abyss and be shallowed by the void. She clinged, feeling her life sapping away. He spoke to her kind words and apologized for no reasons. In reality, Roz felt like she needed to apologize to him, she was making his clothes bloody and all of that but she just could accept his apologies as he raised her in his arms and carried her to the pulpit.

He lowered her on her back, resting in the most comfortable uncomfortable position she could afford with her injured leg toward the boy to help him to fix her. A part of her jumped when he said he didn't know what to do, but Roz vaguely knew about it. She read books where the protagonist saved an injured character, so she used that as reference.

She quietly cough and pointed her thigh with her left hand. She traced her finger to the button of her jeans and unbuttoned it. Normally, she'd feel shame. She rarely got undressed in front of everybody but any aspect of shame or dignity disappeared. She just wanted the open wound on her leg to go away. She zipped down and started pulling them down but she was struggling. This was embarrassing, she hated it but they needed to do something about.

"Help me."

Would he understand? She didn't want to play that game so she told him everything.

"Help me get my pants down so we can put alcohol on it and sow it close."

Rodney pulled the first aid kit out of his bag and set it on the floor, opening it as quickly as he could. He started to pull out everything he was sure he'd need: alcohol wipes, thread and needle, bandages. He had never performed surgery before, but his dad made sure he and his brothers knew how to use a needle. It was only to be for sewing wounds or mending tears in clothes, not to actually make clothes or anything like that. He was sure he could at least stop the girl from bleeding.

At least, he did for a second. He looked back to the girl and saw she was unbuttoning her pants and starting to pull them down. She couldn't get the pants off, but she turned to Rodney for him to finish.

Rodney tried as hard as he could to not stare at... that place. When she first started pulling down, Rodney saw her panties. He had never seen a girl's panties before. He had seen undergarments on the covers of some romance novels, but those were usually long, lacy gowns or sheer nightdresses. He had glimpsed a look at Roz's panties, his gaze momentarily transfixed at her white panties with the small pink bow in the center. He suddenly felt very ashamed to be looking at her in such a state, and for thinking such dirty thoughts while she was bleeding to death. Suddenly, staring at her wound was way more preferable.

"Y-yeah!" he blurted. "Sure!"

Rodney, without looking at her waist area and with his cheeks starting to turn rosy, helped pull the rest of her pants off her legs. He then turned to the wound. It didn't look like she was shot, so someone must have attacked her with a knife or something. It was pretty grim, but he had to operate quickly before infection set in.

He grabbed the alcohol wipe and looked the girl in the face.

"A-again. Sorry for this," he said.

He pressed the wipe to her wound.

His face was red. That's the only feature she could see as he lowered the towel, she could only see his red face. His cheeks were burning up, for a second she thought he was hurt too but she realized that she was showing her crotch to a boy and it was the probably first (and maybe) last time they'd get intimate.

Roz started to blush as well. It didn't feel wrong, but she felt uncomfortable. Like when she changed for gym class, she didn't like it but did it anyways because she wanted her credits. The same thing was happening, he was going to wipe her leg with the towel drenched in alcohol and she could do nothing but stare at his face.

He pressed the towel and she moaned. It hurt. It wasn't fun at all. It hurt so fucking much. She knew it was going to hurt badly but she didn't know it'd make her feel so dizzy. She put her left hand on her mouth to muffle the sound. She kept moaning as he wiped.

She started to tear up, she hated pain. She hated suffering, and there she was on the pulpit of a church, her crotch showing to the world and to that boy she didn't know getting her wound clean with some random alcohol as she moaned. She sniffed softly, Rod stopped for a second and Roz shook her head.

"G-g-go on."

Her voice wavered. Something else she hated. She loved when she came off as cold and stoic. People would hurt her when she was like that. Being vulnerable was a curse, she hated every single seconds of it. She looked down at her wound and her first thought was the enormous, jagged scar it would leave.

It was clean. It still bled quite a bit, obviously, but she could see it clearly. She could see her cut flesh and it made her gag softly. It was gross and her healer found it gross. She shallowed her feelings and told her savior what he needed to do next.

"Now, you need to suture it, please."

Rodney tensed up a bit as the girl let out some cries. Of course it would hurt a lot. Even then, Rodney wasn't sure if he was ready to hear that. It just reminded him how serious the pain she was experiencing, and how it was likely they'd be hearing more screams as the game progressed.

Rodney exhaled a bit as he saw the blood start to get wiped away from the area. The girl then told him he needed to suture it.

"Y-y-yeah," he said. "That's next."

Rodney grabbed the thread and needle and started to thread it. His hands were shaking a bit, so it took a few tries to get through the eye. Once he had it ready, he put one hand on the girl's thigh and put the tip of the needle at the start of the cut.

"Um...here we go..."

Rodney felt his jaw clench as he started to move the needle through her flesh, passing the thread through and closing the wound. He knew he'd have to do a few stitches to get it sealed completely. He looked back at the wound, to the girl, to back to the wound, and felt his jaw start to relax. He figured he needed to keep her attention on something other than the pain.

"Um..."

He passed the needle through again.

"...I'm Rodney. By the way."

Roz started sobbing. There were no reason to hide it from anyone, the only thing she could is cry. It hurt so much, she didn't want to be in pain anymore. She sniffed again, louder. Her parents never saw her cry, her sister saw her cry once after reading a book that ended with the girl dying and the boy crying at her funerals.

She just cried, her tears ran on the side of her face. They were an unfamiliar feeling as they trailed down her face, she didn't like it at all. She wiped it off with her thumb then took a breath in, trying her best to ignore everything and find her inner strength.

She felt the needle enter her thigh, entered the other side of the gaping wound, and over and over and over again.

Then the boy spoke to her, softly. His voice was quiet, she hardly made it out. She thought she was going deaf but really it was the boy that was speaking too softly. It would have made her laugh if she was reading a stupid romantic book but her thigh was screaming at her.

"Mine's Roz, sorry for the mess."

Her name was Roz. That wasn't a name Rodney heard a lot. He probably should have remembered a girl like her back at school. However, he didn't have time to really reflect on the past. He was almost done suturing the wound, and he needed to make sure it was finished properly.

Besides, she was already crying, and he really didn't want to make her cry from continued pain.

"Okay..." Rodney started. "I think we're about done. We j-just need to wrap it and uh..."

Rodney looked back at the kit. He noticed a small bottle and quickly moved it next to Roz's hand. It wasn't much, but if their roles were switched, Rodney would probably want to take a few ibuprofen pills too.

"...maybe take a few of these. Just to be safe...Oh, wait."

Rodney reached into his bag and grabbed a bottle of water. He took the cap off and set it next to the pills.

"This too."

Rodney grabbed the bandages and began to wrap them around Roz's leg. Somehow, he had managed to not completely mess this up, so hopefully she'd live a little longer. Besides, Rodney had never really gotten to "save" someone before. In a way, this was kind of romantic, even like something out of one of the romance books he read. But then again, this wasn't "Injection of Passion" by Samantha LaFontaine, but real life. Someone hurt Roz and Rodney had to know who was dangerous enough to attack a girl like her.

"So...what happened?"

Rozenne didn't know what to answer. It happened quickly and she didn't have the time to think of her action after vomiting because of the adrenaline surge that ran through her. She was coming off of it when she entered the church and crumpled, before that she was doing okay. Her blood loss wasn't worrying and her pain didn't stop her from thinking straight, but now they were both constantly on her mind.

Blood, pain, and Rodney were her world now.

She grabbed the water bottle with a shaky hand and with, her other hand, put the pills in her mouth and shallowed them with the water. It would take a while before they took action and even then it would still hurt.

Looking at Rodney, she didn't know what to tell him. She knew she would have to kill him if he became a threat. She could do that, she did once. This time though wouldn't be as easy unless she hit him in the head and not in the shoulder. She weighed her words, she didn't want to be killed by her savior and she didn't want to kill just yet as she was recovering.

"A boy with a knife threaten me so I shot him and he stabbed me so I shot him again."

Whoops. She didn't mean to sound that callous but she did anyways. She looked at him and looked away toward the stained glass. She has to kill him now.

"I won't do that to you, just don't hurt me, please."

That was a lie. She would hurt him either way. If he attacked her, it would be easier on her conscience but she's going to do it anyways. She just needed to wait the right moment. She made a pact with herself: if the announcement made her sound bad, she'd shoot him. If it didn't, he'd live for longer.

Rodney began to clean up the mess as the girl took the painkillers. She was all bandaged up and should hopefully recover after a bit of time resting. She said some guy was threatening her with a knife, so she had to fight back. She also promised to not shoot him.

"Thanks..." Rodney said. "I'd...um...really be glad if you didn't..."

Rodney then cleared his throat.

"I mean...um... I wouldn't give you any reason to do that. Don't worry. I don't even have a real weapon."

Rodney really hoped his foot wasn't in his mouth right now. He just admitted he was unarmed right after the girl confirmed she shot some crazy guy twice. He really didn't want to kill anyone, especially a weakened girl like Roz.

"But...um...how are you feeling otherwise?"

Rod can live for now. He was virtually weaponless and Roz had a gun. She smiled softly knowing he was easy picking. Realizing it, she added to the conversation.

"Much better. Thanks."

She looked down at her leg. It hurt quite a bit and she could feel the puncture holes of the needle aching but it was worth it. At least, she thought. She looked at her leg and decided it was good enough. The bandage looked okay if a bit stained by her blood and it still hurt quite a bit but she didn't want Rod to think she needed him. She decided the second she opened her eyes, she would be independent, relying only on herself. She wiggled a bit, her vision still blurry and her body still weakened but managed to button her jeans up and zip the flier midway before starting to speak again,

"I'll leave you alone now, thanks for everything."

That's all. She went in the church to die, but instead she got fixed then she was going to leave it. She didn't want to be around him when he'll hear her name on the announcement. He reacted okay but what if the announcer call her a murderer, a sociopath, what if he says she tortured him and left him open in the sunlight? She didn't want to know. She was still shaking and hurt and on the brink of passing out yet she continued to prove a point to the world but, more importantly, herself.

She made one cruel mistake of touching the ground with her weakened leg and the searing pain that rose to her gut sent her to the floor,  and Roz's facade broke again. Tears started flooding down her face, pooling in her clothes. She wanted her sister back, she wanted mum and dad back, she wanted everything back. She buried her face in her hands, crying. She wanted her sister to make her eggs and read a book in her bed as her sister sang as she listen to the radio. She wanted Christmas to arrive and to sit in front of the tree, giving each other gifts. She wanted her dad to kiss her forehead and try to convince her the military wasn't so bad after all. She wanted her mum to hug her and tell her it's going to get better. She wanted to live somewhere than here.

"I, I, I," she took a sharp breath between every word she told herself, "want my m-m-mummy!"

Roz made herself decent again, and said she'd move on. Rodney wanted to stop her. They only just met and had barely gotten to know one another. He didn't want to lose another potential friend so soon after losing sight of Bishop. He slowly reached his blood-stained hand out to stop her, but before he could, Roz was sobbing. He saw she messed up getting up, but now she was crying uncontrollably.

Rodney looked around. Crap. How was he supposed to comfort a crying girl? He looked around and began to search through the first aid kit again. He found a surgical mask. It didn't look like there were any other cloths inside the kit, so he held the surgical mask out to the girl. This was what the gentlemen in his favorite books did, right? Hand a crying woman a handkerchief or something so she could wipe her tears away. He didn't carry a handkerchief, so maybe this would help.

"H-hey..." he began. "It's alright..."

Rodney bit his lip and looked down a bit. There had to be something to comfort her. Something to make her settle down so they could talk about what to do next.

"If it's any consolation...um...I miss my mom too..."
