Once Upon a Time

Open

Sunshine Tower is a 100 metre tall tower that is located near the centre of the resort area. The towers purpose is for guests of the resort to be able to get a panoramic view of the bay area itself. The top of the tower also has a gift shop with many racks and shelves displaying cliché gifts such as postcards, picture frames and tacky models of the tower for visitors to buy. Normally the easiest route to the top of the tower is by the glass elevator the runs its height. However it has been disabled, so the only way to the top is via a long, spiralling staircase.

"...yeah, I saw it."

Unfortunately. Vincent would never dream that this was going to be the first time he would touch a nude man.

But if that was really his last resort, this would be a matter of a few seconds. No way that Nutjob would be capable of resisting both Vahka and Vincent.

"Alright, let's ge-"

He then noticed that said Nutjob reached into the pocket of his jacket. And what he saw then was, unfortunately, not a second penis.

Bantering abounded, and it wasn't even especially witty, more petty than anything. Therefore Riley wasn't very enthralled in the conversation until penises started coming out. That got her attention.

As the only lady in the room, Riley felt she should have the strongest reaction, which was to gasp and avert her eyes. It wasn't even about feminine sensibilities or anything dumb like that; it was just not a penis she felt inclined to look at and therefore did not look at.

Also Taylor had apparently forgotten his parents could be watching this and he was humiliating himself on live TV.

Riley voiced her offense; "Holy shit man, what's wrong with-" but was then interrupted by what happened next.

Taylor pulled one of the grenades out of his jacket pocket. He dropped the hand holding his skirt up and unveiled the small explosive in his hands, putting a finger around the safety clip.

"Yeah, I hope you enjoyed that," he told the trio. "So, unless you'd like to become Swiss cheese, perhaps you should leave."

Taylor backed up a little further, putting him less than a foot away from a balcony door. He surely made his point to them now. They were foolish coming into his territory, and he was in charge.

Yeah, I am in charge...

If he was going to survive this game and enter a life of stardom, he'd need to show what he could do. Wearing a dress, engaging in reckless vandalism, and spouting puns was one thing, but surely explosions would be just as effective.

"So, I guess you better run," he said.

Taylor pulled the safety pin and tossed the grenade towards the trio. He immediately threw open the door to the balcony and ran out. There were a few concrete support beams around the balcony, and hiding behind them would surely be more effective than hiding behind the glass window.

He then heard a loud explosive noise. Some of the glass near him shattered onto the floor of the balcony. He held himself close, trying to ensure that he didn't get cut from the force of the glass flying out

"Woah. That was nuts," he muttered.

He had no clue if the trio were still alive, but he'd have to check. He needed to see the extent of his attack.

Grenades, as it turned out, were somehow way worse in real life than in movies or even on TV. As soon as Riley saw the grenade in Taylor's hand, she panicked. Her throat froze and she couldn't breathe; her muscles tensed and her eyes widened. If that thing went off, she could die, horribly and messily and in a stupid way to a complete dumbass.

She was not ready for that, but she was ready to bolt and had been for some time.

So when Taylor threw the grenade itself, Riley moved faster than she'd ever moved in her life. As in fell through the air, she bolted towards the nearest solid-looking object, which was a series of metal shelves with a bunch of souvenir-type shit on them. Riley dove behind one, the grenade eerily silent on the other side, covered her ears and closed her eyes as she crouched in her hopefully safe spot.

The explosion was still deafening, and a moment later Riley felt a huge weight slam into her back. Terror filled her, but after a second, Riley inhaled deeply. She was still alive, and a quick mental checklist didn't detect serious injury. She opened her eyes, and found herself lying on her stomach, a large and object on her back and her vision distorted by a snowglobe with a tropical island inside.

Riley blinked, and started dragging herself out from under the shelf. By the time she was free, Riley's senses had returned, though she was still a bit dazed. This was really bad; she had absolutely not expected Taylor to have fucking explosives on him. Why did she get stuck with a dinky knife? It didn't matter though, because she was still alive, for however long.

Riley scrambled to her feet and scanned the area, trying to locate Taylor before he could get another attack in.

There were always times when people tried out new things, which, for whatever reason, they immediately appear to be really good at. For Vincent, this was one of these times. And the thing he was surprisingly good at was dodging grenades.

He dived to the side, taking shelter behind a seemingly solid shelf.

A few seconds of nothing but anticipation, then a deafening roar. Now, Vincent changed his opinion. He was so very much for killing Nutjob.

Whether they were seconds, or maybe something longer, Vincent managed to stand up. His ears were still ringing, the blast wave made him feel sick and walking was something very shaky. Nonetheless, he managed to stumble towards the balcony and eventually he opened the door. The harsh, cold winds cut his face, but from his periphery vision, Vincent could see one thing.

His body felt weak, but his mind was sharp.

"You're so dead."

Taylor remained in place for a moment after the explosion. He took a quick look inside and saw the damage. Most of the benches he placed by the door had been thrown by the blast. The carpet looked torn as well. He chuckled. It was such an insane thing to do, but he was glad he got the chance to blow up a room at least once in his life. That was such a rock star move.

Taylor turned back and began to focus. He needed to ensure that all three of those troublemakers were out of the way. He had one grenade left on hand. The other two grenades were still in his backpack. Considering how the explosion went, it didn't look like they went off, so his bag was probably still safe.

He began to reach into his pocket when he saw the balcony door open. That other guy from the other school walked out, furious at Taylor. Well, that clued him in on how many were still left.

"Oh, I'm dead?" Taylor asked, his dress billowing in the wind.

Taylor pulled the other grenade out of his pocket and put his finger around the pin.

"On the contrary. I'm feeling pretty alive right now."

Taylor stepped closer to the guy, keeping a tight grip on the grenade pin.

"So, if I haven't made myself clear, you can leave now. This is my tower, and I'm the one calling the shots. Try anything funny, and this will come right towards your head."

Oh man, I must look so badass right now.

Vahka had tried his best to stay quiet ever since the grenade went off. There wasn't a whole lot of time to think, or plan. His head was throbbing as he stumbled around outside on the balcony, trying to find some semblance of balance.

As he staggered back around the tower, he slowly came to his senses. This was a wrap-around balcony. That meant that if he kept going, he'd probably find a door right about...

Sunshine came into view as he stalked forward. He was focused on monologuing towards Vince and the sneak, too busy to wonder where Vahka had gone, apparently.

He was also at a damned convenient angle for a creative exit.

A dark shadow loomed into the room as Vahka sprang forward, catching Taylor by the back of his dress and flexing his muscles tight as he spun the small boy around, tearing him off the ground and throwing him with all his might towards the glass barrier of the balcony.

Taylor was sure he could get the guy to go running down the stairs with his tail between his legs. There's no way this guy could not see the explosion and not think he was dangerous.

"Alright, I think it's time you made a choice. I haven't got all day," Taylor said to the guy.

Taylor was about to step forward again when he felt something grab him from behind. In shock, Taylor's hands opened, causing him to drop the grenade to the floor, the safety pin still inside. He felt himself lifted off the ground, and before he knew it, he was over the edge of the glass banister.

Taylor couldn't even scream. From what little he did see, the beefy guy had picked him up and chucked him over the edge. Taylor stared up at the gray sky as he began to plummet 100 meters towards the ground. He was so foolish. It was one thing to think he could go through this game being an icon of the season and blazing his way to the end, but to forget that he could die? That was a really bad move on his part. He never was one for thinking that far ahead in the realistic sense.

Taylor watched as the top of the tower moved farther and farther away from his sight. He started to smile. Sure, he was probably about to be an ugly mess on the ground, but no one was going to forget this. Even though it was still the first day, this had to be a part of the demo reels. If Beefy survived, they'd recount this as part of his winner's tale. People would have to try harder to buy his materials from his Etsy store. He was a star, even if it was just for fifteen minutes.

It made him so happy, he could feel tears welling up in his eyes.

They're never going to forget-

IVORY SHARK #2 TAYLOR DEVASHER: DECEASED

70 STUDENTS REMAINING

If anyone wanted to see the legacy of Taylor DeVasher, all they have to do was walk around the perimeter of the Sunshine Tower. They could find him resting on a destroyed postcard rack. The back of his skull broke open upon impact, while his other limbs broke from the crash, staining his beautiful black and white dress in a gorgeous crimson red.

However, he's still smiling. He's just happy to be a part of your lives.

One second Taylor was being his usual self and gloating, the next Huge Guy threw him out the window.

An incredible silence filled the room it seemed, as Riley had to process what just happened.

"Oh my god! What the fuck!" She shrieked, shrill in shock. She backed, slowly, away from the window with it's gaping hole and Vahka standing at it's open maw. "You fucking-the fuck you-what-" Riley screamed again.

She should've known this would end poorly. It should've been obvious, really, that this'd end in blood and death. And really, wasn't that her goal, to avoid blood and death this early? But now, faced with a killer, Riley didn't know what to do. It was funny, almost, how for all her talk of the show and it's virtues and how amazing it was and how much she loved it?

She was totally unprepared for how much it sucked.

So Riley ran. She took a few seconds, watching the horrible situation that had unfolded, really inevitably if anything, and then she ran. Riley raced down the steps as fast as her legs would carry her.

Vincent kept his gaze on Nutjob. He was threatened with another grenade, but Vincent didn't move. He just kept staring. Fuck that guy. Fuck if he thought that Vincent would give up so easily. Too stupid too kill Vincent with the first grenade, so why should it work now. The grip on the glass banister tightened. Vincent was charging. Any moment now, and he-

All the sounds in the world seemed to be muted as Vahka appeared behind Nutjob and threw him from the tower. The fury in Vincent's face was replaced by pleasant surprise.

A few seconds passed.

Vincent stood up properly, Nutjob's body clashed on the floor and the girl began to scream.

"I... I guess I owe you one."

He heard the metallic clatter from the stairs.

"Well, time for us both to get some rest."

His ears were still ringing from the explosion as the sneak bolted off and Vincent started talking to him. It was a struggle to try and process the situation through the haze of pain and adrenaline. The gift shop was torn apart around them, shelves and racks strewn about the floor, objects knocked loose and crushed, a large burn patch forming the grenade's signature...but he was alive. He was alive and Sunshine was dead.

He could think about the second part later. Right now, he was alive.

There was another grenade lying on the floor next to where Sunshine had been standing. Its presence, and Vincent's expression of gratitude, gave Vahka an idea.

"Yeah. Guess you do," he murmured as he bent down and held up the grenade. "Gonna cash in on that now, if ya don't mind. I want this, and any others he's got stashed in his bag or down there in his clothes. Rest of his shit's all yours."

The grenade rolled in his palm as he waited for Vincent's response. If he wanted to make trouble about the split, he was still in the mood to give it to him.

"...yeah, no problem with that."

Vincent was about to ask for one grenade, but he figured that extra supplies would do just as fine. Besides, he needed some rest now, not a confrontation with Vahka.

He turned around and looked into the inside of the tower. It was a terrible mess, but Vincent was amused by knowing how angry his mentor would be. Carefully, he stepped into the building, giving attention to the glass shards scattered around the floor. He had shoes, sure, but who knew whether his sole would be thick enough.

Eventually though, he was confident enough in his shoes that he moved a bunch of glass shards, who after crunchingly gaving up their place created a small clean spot where Vincent could safely sit down.

Vahka nodded and let Vincent wander off for a moment. He felt better collecting his share of the supplies at a distance anyway. The bag was underneath a collapsed shelf, a bit squished but otherwise no worse for wear from the attack. Inside he found two more grenades, and what appeared to be a pretty full supply of food. For a moment, he regretted giving up everything to Vincent, but it was a decent trade. He had enough food for now, and the grenades were more important for him moving forward.

Extra food was for someone playing the long game and laying low. Grenades suited him a hell of a lot better.

He slipped them into his pockets for now and shouldered the bag. The glass cracked underneath his feet as he navigated the maze of debris back to Vincent and plopped it down beside him. A show of good faith, to highlight his end of the bargain. Vahka didn't need anymore enemies yet.

"There ya go. What now?"

The air was considerably less tense now that it was just the two of them, so he allowed himself some time to relax and get curious. So far, Vahka's direction had been aimless, almost random. He was interested in hearing if Vincent was winging it too, or had some sort of plan in mind heading here.

"Ask me something easier."

Vincent eyed Nutjob's former bag before pulling it closer to itself. Vincent would try to get as much of his stuff as possible into his own bag to avoid being slowed down by carrying a second bag, but that would be later.

His eyes darted through the room, observing the diverse details of the destruction caused. The postcards, some torn apart, some burned to ashes. The shelves, some which managed to remain in their position, while others fell down. A tropical-themed snow globe which was in danger of falling down the edge of a shelf before gravity eventually won and the glass orb shattered on the ground.

"This is a good place, sure, but I am not going to sleep here."

Vahka chuckled as he sat down beside his squatted acquaintance. Truth be told, he didn't really know Vincent that well. So far, though, things were going better than they had with his last few meetings. It helped that he didn't have any reason to get into it with him.

"Yeah. Might want to get moving. Seems like everybody's coming in here, and they're gonna have a whole lotta questions."

He cocked his head to the side and stared over at Vincent. "Here's what I'm trying to figure: Of every school we could have been set up with, why'd we have to get the one completely fulla crazies?"
