The Amazing Digital Death Game!

(Open)(Room 204)

The East Wing's second floor housed the Freshman Year (9th Grade) homerooms. Once, Sycamore High School's youngest students roamed these halls and filled them with the sound of unruly antics. Now, though, they are barren of life and as silent as the grave. The homerooms on this floor are empty; tables, chairs, study materials, the belongings of the students, even the whiteboards, all missing—as if someone deleted everything not otherwise nailed down and many of the things that were.

“Everyone may be ordinary, but they're not normal.” - Haruki Murakami, Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World

[KENTON ZINN - SPOOKR8MA - MAIN GAME]
GAME START
What really scares Kenton Zinn?

He might not know. He might not care.

There was once a saying that he heard. Many unfortunate times. There was the claim that the most terrifying thing that you could be scared of, is something you didn't realize is something you should.

Kenton Zinn has found that one fear. He was scared now.

Breathing intensifying from every awaken gasp.

Like computing in his neon green mind and blood, he was processing what has occurred.

Was it true? Was one of his students some sort of virtual school shooter? What was Initiative Earth? What the actual fuck was going on?

Here is what he knew. They were going to kill everyone. This wasn't going to go well. In 4 days, nonetheless.

He wanted to punch something. Hit a wall. Hit a mirror.

He rather do it in a restroom. Unfortunately, his virtual school did not include restrooms.

And it seems this room he was in didn't include any furniture? This classroom felt familiar, but it was devoid of any visible object, apart from a familiar backpack that was upgraded to be a daypack, along with a mysterious chainsaw next to it.

All of this...

...It's a new type of game.

He knew what he should do. Zeph was such an idiot in having Kenton keep his avatar. It was humiliation to have him as his Meatspace self, but he was what he was supposed to be. He was Spookr8ma. THIS was him.

He didn't shed a green tear. He wasn't weak. He will NOT die weak.

Kenton got up from the floor, having waken up earlier.

Propriety #1: Find the others. Omega Squad never leaves one of their own behind.

He picked up the chainsaw next to his bag. Kenton never held a chainsaw before. This was something foreign to him. There were supposed to be a chainsaw weapon back during a previous CyberTag game title, but the devs were forced to pull it at the last minute, since the weapon was seen as too violent for a CR game. I rather have a gun...

However, in Kenton's case, he was about to be one of the most luckiest men in the world.

Setting down the chainsaw, he examined the inside of his daypack. The neon green and black stripped bag included a glow-in-the-dark green outline and that cartoon ghost decal that Kenton has. Opening it, he already found something that made his eyes widen.

It was...

...The Portal Gun from the game Portal?

Kenton pulled out the portal gun. It was just like the video game. Isn't it a prop?

Kenton saw a blank wall at one end of the room. Where the markerboard was supposed to be. Putting it at the triggers, he fired off one portal. A familiar oval-shaped blue shape appeared. Kenton turned around. Another blank wall. He fired anot-

"Shit." Kenton accidently fired another blue portal, putting it at that wall instead. It's been a while since he played a Valve game. He turned back to the wall where the blue portal originally was. He found the other trigger. There, the orange portal immediately showed the back of Kenton.

Should he test it?

Kenton immediately walked towards the orange portal. The thing he was seeing was just him with his back turned in front of the orange portal. It was an infinite effect he made. Kenton hopped through the portal and ended up out through the blue portal.

He knew what he was feeling right now.

He was...

This could be his chance.

All of those books and media about certain characters. Wade Watts, Sword Art Online, The "Guy".

He was going to be a legend now.

Kenton smiled to himself. This was his time.

Until a man is twenty-five, he still thinks, every so often, that under the right circumstances he could be the baddest motherfucker in the world...

- Neal Stephenson, Snow Crash

"Nova" spoke a familiar voice.

A figured loomed in the doorway, casually leaning against the frame with their arms crossed. Their body shrouded in darkness, save for the pair of eyes peering through a plastic hockey mask.

The figure stepped forward, a confident swagger to their every step, wearing a distinctive red jacket that Kenton would recognise instantly.

The figure - The Guy, even - took off his mask, his lips curled into a cocky half-smirk.

"Portal Gun, huh? Not bad, not bad at all..." said V-Raptor, machete tucked into his belt.

((Xtra Zimmermann continued from Show Us Endless Neon Vistas))

Down the hall, another figure was approaching, steps casual and calm, like it was any day at school. She made no pretense of stealth and displayed no sign of concern; her eyes instead swept over the empty walls of the empty halls with a hungry curiosity, as if they were adorned with murals.

She was still a few dozen feet away from the open door where the boy stood, but she'd probably noticed him by now. Or at least, she was assuredly heading in his direction.

The moment that Kenton heard the familiar voice, he immediately turned to it.

Almost on instinct, Kenton had the portal gun pointed at him, until he lowered his guard.

"Vee." What was he even doing with that hockey mask on. It looks like whatever he got was a machete and hockey mask combo. Vee wasn't the type to be going around as Jason Voorhees.

"I seem to be the lucky one in this little horror show. Of course, if I want things to be like Dead Rising, they gave me a chainsaw, if I want to go all out."

Kenton can see through the doorway, someone else behind Vee. Someone walking towards them. Kenton recognized who they were.

"Xtra's here, too." Kenton mentioned to Vee, who Xtra was currently behind him.

"Oh, I'm aware..." Vee replied, turning his head to offer Xtra a nod and a quick finger wave.

He appeared... At ease, almost. Far more than anyone in his predicament ought to be, peering down at the hefty chainsaw Kenton mentioned with an impressed whistle.

"Daaamn son. Seems whoever's behind this little stunt has a hard-on for boomer horror movies" he scoffed, squatting down to take a closer look. "Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Portal, Friday the 13th..." he continued, tapping his mask against the machete at his side before getting back up onto his feet.

"What about you?" he asked, turning back to Xtra. "What pop culture reference did you end up with?"

TIP: Whenever they catch you, they will kill you. But first, they must catch you. Remember speed is armor, and use the heelies to evade enemies and clear out areas faster.

Winter slammed a door open and rolled out of one classroom, gun raised to the air to avoid shooting at anyone. Her eyes were still hidden by the sunglasses, her muscles were taut. But she tightly put on a grin that showed all her teeth when she saw Xtra in the hallway, just a few feet away. She turned towards her, still keeping the gun away.

Well, that was easy. She found someone she knew she could rely on.

“No one’s gone crazy yet, right? Hi Xtra, by the way.”

Her voice was light, almost as if it was a normal day. But there was a tone of venom underneath.

Again, fucking Zeph. She pushed the memory of their teacher’s brains splattered on the wall back, or at least tried to. Some part of her just boiled each time she remembered it. Fucker wants to put them in a death game? He should just join in himself, it’s only fair that he gets to experience this type of teen drama too if he wants to do this shit, asshole.

She heard some noises from one of the neighboring classrooms just nearby, and she didn’t see who was inside, but they sounded familiar. Well, of course, they’d sound familiar, these were her classmates. But… familiar-familiar, you know?

Winter peeked around Xtra, and her smile got wider.

“And hi Spook and hey Vee!” Winter waved with a free hand, moving herself further out of the door she came from.

And just like that, they were united.

Xtra peered from behind her red lenses, taking the others in. It was convenient, which meant she didn't fully trust it. Zeph knew them, as much as anyone in class not part of their own inner circle did. Was this fortune, or the bonds of associative destiny, or a decidedly human hand steering them to this encounter? If the latter, to what end?

Perhaps they were meant to quarrel. They were competitive. They worked well together, but they also knew each other's ample capabilities. If they were to pursue this as was seemingly intended, the other members of the squad would be great assets to a point, and great competition beyond it. On a strictly tactical, match-level form of calculation, it was something of a prisoner's dilemma. If they cooperated, they all benefited in equal measure, but if one of them made a move against the others first, that one would derive greater benefit.

An interesting conundrum in theory, but inapplicable here. Xtra knew that, whatever they did or did not agree on, they would hold strong.

"Hare." Xtra raised her hand in greeting. "Spook. Vee."

Her lips quirked up as the weaponry situation was questioned.

"I'm afraid you got the better end of things," she said, reaching behind her back and then withdrawing her own assigned armament.

At first glance the pistol's design could be mistaken for newsprint. Closer inspection, however, revealed its true nature.

Dozens of eyes stared in all directions with vacant, heart-shaped pupils. Dozens of cheeks were flushed in ecstasy. Dozens of tongues lolled out in orgasmic bliss.

"Usually on the other end of this sort of thing," Xtra said in something more mumble than wry, closer to bashful than any of them had seen her in months.

Oh Vee...

You pathetic fool in thinking that the game Portal is part of "boomer" horror movies. Clearly, Vee hasn't seen Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th.

Clearly, he didn't know anything about:

- The first Friday the 13th, which didn't have Jason Voorhees until he was introduced in Friday the 13th Part 2.
- Friday the 13th Part 3, where Jason Voorhees would get his hockey mask.
- Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter with Jason getting "killed" off.
- Friday the 13th: A New Beginning with the plot twist is that "Jason" was actually some random paramedic guy wearing a "Jason" costume.
- Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives that finally brings Jason back as a zombie revenant.
- Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood that uses ripoff Carrie that is never brought up again.
- Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan that doesn't even take part in Manhattan until the last 2/5th of the movie.
- Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday that has ghost Jason.
- Jason X with the most ironic scene ever!!!
- Freddy vs Jason with Jason Voorhees vs Freddy Kreuger.
- That 2009 Friday the 13th remake that Michael Bay produced.
- The Friday the 13th TV series that was completely unrelated to the Friday the 13th franchise in any way possible.

But, oh ho ho ho!!!!

Kenton hasn't mentioned the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, because the only Texas Chainsaw Massacre that Vee probably knows is the shitty 2022 movie with killing off the original 1974 final girl and having this bullshit!
Which means he doesn't know anything:

- The original Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 1974.
- Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 that gave people their beloved Chop Top.
- Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III with a literal golden chainsaw.
- The Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre including the random Illuminati plot.
- The 2003 remake and its prequel that were alright.
- Not alright was the shitty Texas Chainsaw 3D movie with that dated 3D gimmick that no one cares about anymore.
- And that Leatherface film in 2017 that gave Leatherface a backstory, even though he didn't need a full blown different backstory, but they need that Leatherface origin hype to make up for fact that they put in mostly video on demand.

Vee wasn't a REAL horror film. Kenton spent years. YEARS consuming every piece of horror media he can get his virtual clawed hands on.

All he wanted to say to Vee was the simple line.

Go fuck yourself.

What Kenton actually said was.

"Portal isn't a horror movie. Also, don't you dare be calling Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th boomer movies, you uncultured swine." Kenton held his rage, though he briefly was daydreaming wanting to yell directly at Vee. It wasn't until there was someone else nearby that Kenton tilted his head behind both Vee and Xtra to see another familiar face.

"Hare. Looks like 4 of us are here. We're missing both Amy and Angel." Kenton said, though he didn't know if Winter took things seriously. Then, Xtra was showing off her own personal weapon.

Was that a...?

Holy shit. Zeph had a juvenile sense of humor. This WAS going to be like that anime Sword Art Online..

"Look!" Kenton wanted to be the one in authority. If there was a way to knock Vee down a peg, he can jump at the opportunity. "As we already know, we're stuck at our own school and we appear to be held hostage by one of our own classmates. How he managed to hack the school with a supposed lethal virus is beyond me, but whatever the case, we cannot leave our own CR rigs manually." Kenton turned his attention to both Xtra and Hare. They were both the ones who knew a lot more about CR technology than anyone. They should know a thing or two about what was going on, since he never encountered something like this before. "Xtra. Hare. Do you have any proper ideas on how we can sort through this mess?" Kenton asked.

Vee blinked.

"Uh, yeah? I know that?" he replied, looking at Kenton like he was trying to explain that water was wet. "They're all pop culture references. Games, movies, whatever. I bet you some lucky sumbitch out there's rocking a lightsaber..."

He let the uncultured swine comment slide, for now. It never failed to surprise him how defensive people got over a dead medium like film, as if CR hadn't rendered all forms of non-interactive entertainment obsolete. But that was a conversation for another day...

The smile returned to Vee's face when Hare turned up, pointing a pair of fingers in her direction. "Aaaaaye, gangs all here... Almost" he said with a shrug, before turning to Xtra as she revealed her weapon. He raised his brow, initially confused as to what she meant given that she had a gun and they didn't.

But then he took a closer look... And immediately burst out laughing.

"HAAA-HAH! Oooh my god..." he cackled, wiping a virtual tear from his eye as his knees buckled.

Vee was still laughing when Kenton started his speech, his grin looking a little more forced than it was a moment ago. He let Kenton finish his spiel before stepping in, interjecting himself before Hare and Xtra had a chance to respond.

"Eeeeasy there, Captain America... Let's get a couple things straight before we get ahead of ourselves" he said, standing tall before Kenton to assert himself. "Zeph's full of shit, one way or another. If he's telling the truth, then he was never one of us to begin with. Hell, far as we know he could be some neckbeard in his forties. Any of you ever actually met him in meatspace?"

He waited a moment to give everyone a chance to respond, before swiftly moving onto his next point. "Way I see it? We can't take a damn thing he says at face value."

Despite the sour mood Winter was in, Xtra’s gun got a chuckle out of her. It was an aheglock. At least it was a weapon. At least it was useful. Right? But Xtra had to stare at anime girlies in the throes of pleasure while doing anything with it. So two guns, even if one was… that.

But, her amusement stopped the second Vee brought up Zeph.

“If you think about it, it’s creepy. He says he hates teenage drama, but he spent all that time with us. You know the horror stories of creeps pretending to be children online so that they can trick kids into meeting them in Meatspace? Like that. He could be a grown-ass adult, and he’s doing this shit. For all we know, he could be… into-into it.”

Did Zeph ever date? Did people ever fight over the chance to date him? How many people shared intimate details about themselves, like family drama or friend drama? Sometimes people had parties off campus, Winter definitely did, her last birthday was spent in a moon server, which was cliched as far as servers go. She definitely went to CyberDisco and such, too. How many parties and other things did he attend where there would be a ton of her classmates completely unsuspecting? If he truly was recording Franklin without his knowledge, how many other people did he spy on in some way? Did he go so far as to put cameras in everyone’s home somehow? Or use the school server itself as a way to snoop? If he found a way to spy on Winter would he also be spying on the twins?

Her free hand clenched and shook.

Creep. Creep.

She took a moment to not go down that rabbit hole any further. Other things to focus on.

“Oh, and to answer your question, Spook, I don’t know how we can get out just yet, but I get the feeling he used a security loophole. Remember how Arch and I played that one prank on the class? That’s how we did it, school security isn’t as tight as you’d think. It’s also why I’m careful about what I keep on the school server.”

It was true. Winter didn’t have that many incriminating things, but she was pretty sure FuguFish was kept in a different place right before they installed it into 12-B. Even school projects were off-server until she needed to submit them. You’d think that students installing a prank mod into the homeroom would be enough to patch things, but apparently no!

"No," Xtra said quietly when queried about whether she'd ever met Zeph in meatspace. Of course, in her case that shouldn't be a surprise, since she'd barely spent any time with any of the others in meatspace. The physical world was largely obsolete, at least for her. That was actually one of the things she'd appreciated about Zeph, that he never got weird about those preferences. The idea that his stance may have been born of some ulterior motive was... it was less unsettling, more disappointing. Perhaps he deserved less credit than she'd been extending.

"School security is mediocre," she added, following up on Hare's point. "Most security is, if you know the proper way in."

This was not the time and place to explain concepts like spear phishing or 3-2-1 to the rest of the Squad, since none of that would help them cope with their current predicament. There was a lot to mull, and still more than ninety-five hours to mull it in, so no need to get ahead of themselves.

She stepped into the empty, featureless classroom properly, leaving the door open for Hare to follow, and gave a look to Spook and Vee. She was hoping they'd play nice here. Sometimes in a game things went wrong, and it was easy for people to delegate the blame for that, lashing out at those closest to them. Xtra didn't tolerate that in herself, and she didn't appreciate it in others either. They were Omega Squad. Spook needed to chill a little.

But she didn't say that. Instead, she shrugged, different eyes on the gun making contact with her friends as it bobbed in her hand.

"Xena was ditching first period," she said instead.

Maybe the others caught the implication, and maybe not. Had Xena been here, Xtra would've felt obligated to do something, to act on behalf of her sister and safeguard her as usual, no matter how futile it ultimately was. She would've had to try, and maybe it would've created a hard choice at some point. But the lines of destiny had woven to avoid that, a stroke of fortune for all of them.

Xtra's eyes flicked to the orange and blue portals crackling in the walls, the primary points of interest in an otherwise-indistinct space, and then to the gun Spook held.

"Does it work?" she asked.

Kenton still knew that Vee was in some ways ignorant, but they were never going to go anywhere, unless they got back on track. Kenton can complain for all the pop culture he wanted, when the threat of death isn't on his mind. Vee kept his composure up to make himself taller than Spook, before he did a little spiel of his own. Compared to Kenton, he was almost as short as the girls.

"Neither of us met him within the Meatspace." Hell, Kenton didn't even get a chance to meet anyone else in the Meatspace. Some kids probably thought he was some random student, unrelated to his alter-ego back at Cyber Reality. "I do agree with the idea that Zeph might have been some random neckbeard creep..."

The thought of Zeph being an adult actually did make Kenton uncomfortable, the more he thought about it. "It is fucked up.." God. What the hell was going on? Was Zeph some random manchild who been catfishing people by acting like a high school student? It explains Xtra's gun and how Zeph suddenly used the time to act like a megalomaniac when everyone got trapped.

In terms of both Hare and Xtra explaining on how lackluster school security was, Kenton couldn't help but grimace. Mr. Franklin did explain that the school was undergoing a patch during spring break. If Kenton had to guess, that wannabe script kiddie Zeph managed to trojan horse his way into the school with the hacking in tow. It doesn't explain how he managed to brick everyone's systems, so that the log off option from the HUD is removed. This was still something that Kenton never seen before.

"The portal gun does work. I hopped through one of them to see if it was like the game." Kenton addressed Xtra, showing off his portal gun. "I don't know how I'm going to carry both the portal gun and a chainsaw. That might be someone else's job. I'm more comfortable having this with me." Kenton knew that the portal gun wasn't an actual lethal gun, but there were a lot of opportunities that Kenton could come up with.

"It's true that this can be a joke, but some things don't click with me." Kenton wasn't trying to argue against Vee, but there were some obvious points. "For all I know, Zeph might be some creep who got his hands on the usual script kiddie software and decided to troll the school he was pretending to be a student in, just for kicks." Kenton held up the portal gun again to make an example. "He got a bunch of his favorite mods from Cyber Reality and plopped them down here, so we can fuck anyone and expect us to go Lord of the Flies with each other.

There is this one thing that's bugging me, though."
Kenton thought it was something to brush off, but it was best to get it out of the way.

"I've never seen anyone do a hack where they are stuck in Cyber Reality. That's usually sounds like something that beta players are supposed to mention before they ship off system upgrades. How Zeph managed to pull something like this off is beyond me. The worst thing we can worry about Zeph is that he might actually be a disgruntled troll... and a creep. Doesn't explain how he managed to find Franklin's house, unless he's stalking him for some random beef."

Vee nodded his head in agreement, his eyes occasionally glancing down at the chainsaw by Kenton's feet.

"It's... Disconcerting, I'll give you that. Imagine it's not too far-fetched for someone to develop malicious software that allows you to override the usual safeguards, like coding a program that doesn't have an uninstall option."

He turned to Hare and Xtra, curious as to whether either of them had any input on the plausibility of tech like that. He'd done his fair share of programming, but his area of expertise was more customising avatars and modding CR applications. Hacking and malware wasn't really his thing.

"Seems obvious at least that whoever Zeph is, they're not working alone. Hell, the guy said so himself... Initiative Earth" he said, derisively. "Probably one of those meatgonk protest groups, trying to make some political statement about the dangers of ego-shooters. Fucking luddites..."

Vee spat on the ground in disgust, before looking over his teammates with his arms folded. "Personally... I wouldn't be surprised if this entire monkey show's some kinda social experiment. Seems more plausible to me than our headsets having the ability to induce toxic-chronic seizures or whatever the fuck..."

He turned to Kenton. "Not that we shouldn't take any of this seriously. Just that the only thing we know for certain is that Zeph's a liar, so it wouldn't surprise me if there's more to all this than they're letting on."

Winter walked into the classroom, and leaned her back against the wall near the door, frowning. She still kept her gun away.

“Here’s the thing: it’s kinda unprecedented. I mean, preventing people from logging out? Like, sure, you get people every once in a while speculating whether CR can be used as a way to keep people hostage or whether you can recreate SAO, but like, it’s been in the theoretical ‘these are the potential dangers of CR’ hand-wringing way, not something that people do regularly. If I had to guess how they keep us trapped here… dunno yet, but there might be a rootkit thing involved which means they have installed something that changes things on an admin level and is difficult to spot, but still, keeping people trapped in CR is out there. We’re probably on a different server, come to think of it. And yeah, it’s likely he isn’t working alone, too.”

Xtra was right, though: lots of things can be hacked, and you don’t have to be a hackerman to know how to crack things. A lot of times, the one cybersecurity threat wasn’t some person hanging out in a darkened room on a laptop typing away and causing things to happen through hacking the system directly, but simply because of human error, which was a more charitable way of saying 'people are idiots and don’t use common sense.' Sometimes people don’t bother to check the URL to make sure they’re logging into the correct site, or whether to verify an email’s authenticity, or simply realizing they shared too much online. All these and more were cybersecurity issues that could be solved by telling people to be smart.

But she hated to do this, but she had to anyway: she looked at Xtra too. The fact she couldn’t solve it on her own was… frustrating. It was again, some unprecedented shit, and she wanted to be able to figure it out within seconds. She was the smart one, the cool one, the one who knew shit. That was what made her her. And yet, she fell for Zeph’s deception? Why couldn’t she have spotted that? How dare he make her look stupid? And be a massive creep? And do… this?

Her free hand clenched again.

Though, Xena apparently wasn’t there, which was a good thing to account for.

“It’s funny you got a Portal gun, by the way. I got a Pac-Man costume, which, even if you think he’s like, some weirdo Luddite protester, it’s kind of creepy. Pac-Man and I have a history, so… think it’s not entirely random?”

It was true. Winter had fond memories of playing browser Pac-Man on her parents’ computer. Even now, she still enjoyed going into servers and playing Pac-Man, his wife Ms. Pac-Man, and even the weird pinball-arcade game Baby Pac-Man that someone ported once. So naturally, the CR arcades that some of her classmates visited had a high-ranking scorer on the machines named WIN. She changed her Avatar’s shoelaces to various patterns regularly, and one was a Pac-Man theme. Zeph was right there the entire time, and it only emphasized the creepiness of him lurking in the background this entire time.

"They might not be protestors," Xtra said. "This may be a proof of concept."

This was, in her opinion, more likely. Things were starting to come together in her mind. Sophisticated technological attacks did not speak to Luddites, and whatever the method of penetration, the fact remained that the students' enforced presence was evidence of a level of adeptness that was otherwise unknown. Xtra knew a little about how things worked. Disabling (or even just hiding) the logout interface assuredly meant overriding all sorts of safety features—the sorts of safety features the government insisted on from the start.

Nobody had done this before, but many people had considered the possibility. This meant that there would be precautions in place to make it impractical, indeed theoretically impossible. Circumventing those precautions meant the mother of all backdoors, which could of course have been discovered by chance, but which more likely spoke to inside information.

Her current theory was that, far from some rogue group, these "Initiative Earth" people were connected to a government or paramilitary force. It made a measure of sense. If you were able to co-opt a CR session and use it to orchestrate an assassination, it could be used to quietly dispose of adversaries without any of the bother of missiles, collateral damage, or the direct deployment of assets. A seizure, additionally, was the sort of thing that might be written off as chance. A pattern would be noticed and whispered about, but likely nothing more—CR's very own Havana syndrome.

Of course, if this was true, then most likely none of them would actually be allowed to leave. The cover story would be a backup plan, in case somehow or other things came to a premature end. The purpose of holding them like this would be to test some other function. Possibly it would eventually be used for interrogation.

The others didn't need to know about this little hypothesis. It would cause undue stress, and there was of course a decent chance she was incorrect, in which case she would be leading them down the wrong path.

"This is definitely their own server," she said instead. "That way they don't have to worry about anyone pulling the plug."

They would be controlling variables, keeping it as simple as possible. What they'd done would be discovered. There was that last little comment about a livestream, but Xtra thought it was probably a red herring, thrown in as an aside to keep anyone from questioning it.

"They probably took over a security camera in Mr. Franklin's house," she continued. "Zeph is a liar, but we should assume that parts of what we've been told are potentially true and proceed accordingly."

She did not dignify the suggestion that the assignments were anything but random with a reply, though she had glanced at her own weapon a couple more times.

"I also got paint," she said instead. "The color spectrum."

She looked between her three friends, as she shuffled in her pack, bringing out a can and rattling it.

"What is your favorite color?" she asked.
