These six buildings loom over the town square. Standardized Soviet bloc housing, each building is four stories high and identical, differing only in their respective states of decay. Each floor is accessible by a pair of concrete stairwells on either side of a central corridor with six apartments on either side of the halls. The final flight of stairs opens out onto the roof, where backup generators and support systems for the buildings’ heating systems sit rusting and neglected. Four of the buildings seem quite well preserved, but the two closest to the approach from the docks appear to have sustained more decay and damage, with clear signs of a firefight and blast damage to some of the outer walls.
None of the apartments are locked, and some are missing doors altogether. Each apartment is a tight squeeze, with two closet-like bedrooms, a tiny kitchen, and a living room. Each floor featured a communal bathroom, which was common in buildings of that era. Many of the furnishings have been left in place, including quilts, lamps, wardrobes, bed frames, and the occasional radio or television. The furniture is often tightly packed into what little space there is, leaving little space to move, and occasionally trinkets of the past lives that called these places home can be found and read - if one knows Russian.

"It's complicated." She turned toward Chevy. "You know, like, hum. I... I know a lot about death games, and battle royales, and, uh, fight to the deaths. I know a lot."
She sucked in air through her teeth, and rubbed her knees with her fist. Gosh, she was so cold.
"It's seriously nothing. I'm not like a russian spy or whatever. Hahah. Hah." She looked back through the windows. The drone was still there. "We should move, it's still watching us."
Chevy raised an eyebrow. She knows a lot about death games and battle royales? The hell does she study in U of C? Chevy didn't recall a class that dealt with death games, especially since this is his first game he been in.
The forced laugh from Reinette didn't help matters. Until, she mentioned the drone that was flying around outside the window.
"What's still watching us?" Chevy said, noticing Reinette looking out the window. Chevy got up briefly to see what was outside, until he noticed the silent drone that was flying outside the window. "The hell is that!? They have surveillance drones here?!" Chevy was becoming angry. He had Reinette moved to the side, so he can get the window open. The moment he did, the drone briefly flew away from him. All there was now was cold air entering the room. Chevy was forced to close the window with a loud slam.
"That's how they are keeping tabs on us?" Chevy asked Reinette.

She bit her lip, looking around the room. There weren't any cameras so she wasn't sure how they kept track of them while they inside of buildings. There were probably trackers in the thing inside of their neck, and sound recording from their PDA. It wouldn't surprise her if the whole place was stuffed with bugs too.
"Usually, there's cameras, but I can't see any here. I don't think they care that much." She sighs. "The whole island is probably stuffed with things cutting away signals from phone and shit. It's like... hum, cellphone blockers and all. They're not that hard to mass produce if you have a team under you. Plus, they've obviously put bugs in the building, so they've been listening to us all along."
She scratches her bump again.
"I think... I think it's more for the... the things than it is for us, you know?"
Reinette had brought up the possibility of cellphone blockers and cameras. Chevy glimpsed around the room. No cameras, but it was heavily likely that cellphone blockers were implemented. Explained a lot, since his phone is somewhat bricked for anything useful, like communication. Bugs on the other hand were likely. But you can't be searching everywhere in bugs.
Reinette mentioned the monsters again. She didn't use the term directly. Only implicitly, but Chevy already knew what she was referring to. "Maybe.. How do you know a lot of this stuff with death games and stuff? You take a major related to it, or something?" Chevy was getting curious. She looked like a science geek, but she might have some other stuff that could be useful.

"I'm studying nanotechnology. Specifically, the usage of nanotechnology in warfare. Self-replicating machines, communication technology, explosive collars. Anything that is incredibly small but keeps and transfers a lot of power. I was specifically researching a mean of creating a weapon that is controlled remotely that is able to infiltrate and control systems. Think of it as a virus or as a bacterium. I was almost a Janus-Hayes intern, so I'm not too... unfamiliar with their techniques and their projects. I was, however, not aware that they were doing this."
Reinette huffed.
"The death games? It's more a hobby than anything else."
Reinette was a scientist gal from what she explained. An ambitious, but a little dangerous one at that. Chevy could give her some credit. They both were completely against Janus-Hayes.
"We might have been in the same league." Chevy went on to explain his studies.
"I'm a Peace and Conflict Studies major. My academic hobbies are military strategy, warfare, and standard military history. I wrote a lot about a bunch of wars from the Chinese Civil War to Vietnam. I've been pitching this idea that could have landed me a job as a military analyst. Something that could give me a fancy government job. This idea is about going against the 'necessary evil' concept. The whole thing about how there needs to be sacrifices or innocent casualties to justify the victory of a war. Hell, I was going to quote Sun Tzu. Anyways, I saw this trip to the Janus-Hayes facility as a networking opportunity. They were a big corporation, so they needed to some government connections that I could get notice from."
Chevy looked away briefly, slumping back on the couch. "Unfortunately, it looks like Janus-Hayes is more interested on committing human rights violations than recruiting interns. That's why I'm onboard with us getting the monster killed. We don't know what else they are going to do with that thing, but they might sell it to some authoritarian country to let loose on people. That thing could be made as a military weapon. An unusual one at that." Chevy explained to Reinette.
"How much of death games do you know, since we're now forced in one?" Chevy wanted to know if she knew some good tips.

"Well, I know about LARPing," she says with a nerdy smile. "I m-meant more, hum, written."
She was bright red. She hated talking about her interests. She hated talking about the things she liked. She always assumed people would mock her, and then use it against her. So she kept it tight to her chest, and rarely divulge them.
"I, oh gosh, so there's this book and then there was this website it was based on, and we roleplayed the book, you know? It was a game to the death, and it was fun. So we had more versions, and then there were more characters. l've been roleplaying there since I'm teen, so it's been a while!" She rubbed at her neck. "I know this is really weird, especially because of what's happening, but they're like my only friends."

"Weellll, that's why I know about the microphones. And the drones. And the security methods, you know? I know those things because I actually participated in a bunch of those. Usually, there's a way to keep the contestant from wandering off, but here, there's like nothing. There's also a bunch of terrorists watching the footage, making sure we're not trying to escape, but here it doesn't look like the case either."
She rubbed her neck.
"This leads to me believe that they don't plan for any of us to survive, you know? They could just wait until we're all dead, collect their weapons, and do another round with someone else."
Chevy heard what Reinette mentioned on how Janus-Hayes might be planning this whole death game. It was not a good thought. Being seen as disposable by a bunch of sociopaths. They would die, then they could trick another group of University of Cascadia students into bringing thrown on the island to die again.
"Has anyone in your death games ever escaped?" Chevy said, checking his PDA again, bringing up the map. "We would need a boat or something to get off the island. We can possibly stowaway on a boat that could be on the island or nearby. The weather isn't going to help us, since we don't want to freeze to death in the middle of the ocean. There's also the drones we need to hide from. I don't know if these people have something else besides a mutated polar bear. They needed to transport it somehow. Like a cargo ship?" Chevy gave suggestions, since while he wanted to kill the monster, he thought it would be smart to attempt an escape.

In Darwin's Theory, the games were made to be escapable, but they were really hard to escape anyways. If you wanted to escape, you had to use your OOC knowledge which made your IC actions a bit weird. It was like... your characters weren't really acting like your characters and more like adults. And Darwin's Theory never had adults. It only had teenagers.
"If we tried to escape the island, I think they'd bring up the mercs. Which leads back to our previous problems: weaponry." She sighed. "That's why I feel like holding up might be our best bet, you know? The longer we stay here, the better our chances for rescue."
