She just had to jump.
Reinettes Rennes starts!
It was way too late to go home.
She should have never went on this trip. She wasn't meant to do any of this. She wasn't built for this. She should have stayed home, laying at the end of her bed. She felt like she was fifteen years old again. When she was bored, on her laptop, playing stupid games. She always fantasized about what she would do if this was in her case in Darwin's Theory, but she had never thought this would be real.
It was way too late for her to go home again.
No-one would know.
Maybe when this would be over, she'd wake up at the end of her bed.

He was breathing heavily.
Heavily.
Was this hell? A fever dream?
How the fuck did things go wrong for Chevy Gallagher?

THAT IS NOT OKAY!
Chevy could still see the professors getting torn apart by... that thing. He could see..
Wait a moment?
Where was he?
It was hard to breathe, but he was warm. Like he was in some sort of cocoon?
"What the hell...!?"
Chevy started to move around for something. He felt a zipper. Gripping and pulling it towards him, he zippered his way out of his sleeping bag. The cold air was the first thing he felt. He adjusted to his new surroundings. He was in some sort of hallway with doors? Where was he? Did they throw him out onto the island?
"Chevy, what the fuck did you get yourself into? This was supposed to be an important trip! You could have been hired by these assholes!" Chevy had to talk to himself, just so he can calm down. He noticed something and realized that he was still a bit warm. He wouldn't say cozy, but he realized that he was in his winter garb. There was also the PDA device that was stuck on his arm, like a makeshift watch.
He already remembered things when he passed out. He was out in the observation desk. He took the iodine. He passed out, stumbling out of his cabin. God, Chevy got played a fool.
His legs were still in the sleeping bag. He got his legs out, seeing the bag that he was in. Until he noticed the duffle bag nearby.
Looks like they gave one to everyone.
Chevy scooted over to the duffle bag, getting it open. Chevy raised an eyebrow. There was something black and bulky next to the bag that was behind it. It was body armor. He picked it up to examine.
Looks like a ballistic vest? I don't know what other stuff is going to happen, but I don't want to get shot right now.
Chevy wasn't comfortable, trying it on now. He didn't know if there were people nearby. He got to work, opening the duffle bag. There were a good handful or two of water bottles and... MREs. Chevy listened to a student back in one of his classes talk about the unappealing taste and quality of MREs, combined with the history with MREs as a whole. It was better than what the Civil War soldiers had to eat, at least. The MREs seem to be current. One of the MREs read out "Pepperoni Pizza Slice". Didn't Chevy need a microwave or were these like Lunchables?
There was a flashlight in the bag. Might have enough batteries, if the stuff looks brand new. A fire starter kit. He definitely needed that. A spare wool hat. Another flashlight, looks like it was designed for emergencies. Lastly, a first aid kit. Chevy made sure that everything was in his bag. He was going to need everything.
He paused, realizing that the sleeping bag was going to be important. Yeah, he needed whatever resources he had. A man like Chevy was out in the dangerous unknown. If anything, he needed to survive. He tried to make the sleeping bag all folded and neat, before he stuffed it into the daypack.
He got out, zipping up the duffle bag. The body armor didn't look like it could fit. He could only carry it manually for now. He kept the straps of the duffle bag over his right shoulder, carrying the body armor with his left arm and hand. His fingers gripped over the neck guard to keep it from dragging on the floor.
"Alright, where the hell am I?"
As Chevy noted, he was in a hallway with doors. However, he could feel cool air coming from one end of the hallway that led a stairwell and a set of doors, leading outside.
The moment that Chevy got outside, he looked around. Where the hell was he? It was cold and windy. He was glad that they didn't steal his winter clothing. He was in some sort of square? There were identical buildings in front and next to him. He counted 5, but he came out the 6th one. There was a tall building that had a statue in front of it. Chevy took a few steps forward, wondering if he should check inside.
Before he could do so, he had the weirdest feeling that something wasn't right.
He just got of the building. Maybe he could go back inside. He turned around to examine the building he was in. It was the same like the other 5 buildings, but-
Oh shit.
Oh shit!
He had glimpsed up briefly, seeing a woman on the rooftop. From Chevy's point of view, it looked like she was close to the edge. Was she about to jump?
"HEY!" Chevy yelled at her. He didn't know what she was about to do. He had to try to wave his right arm to get her to not do anything. "STAY WHERE YOU ARE! DON'T JUMP OR WHATEVER YOU'RE DOING, LET ME GET UP THERE!"
Don't jump, lady! Come on! I didn't came here for people to die!

Reinette didn’t think someone would see her.
In movies and in Darwin’s Theory, that happened quite a bit. People interrupted suicides all the time. It was a trope, even, and Reinette didn’t feel like commenting on it.
She only wanted to walk forward until she stopped.
So when someone called out to her, she was almost glad. A rational part of her wanted someone to stop her, to grab her away. She wanted to be snatched away from this island. But it wasn’t possible. Nobody would come to help.
It’d take two weeks before someone would be home.
Someone.
Not people.
She looked at the guy. She wasn’t sure what her characters would say. So, she said nothing other than tears flooding her already cold face.

The woman didn't say a word. She did look at Chevy, but no reply.
"JUST BACK AWAY FROM THE EDGE, OK?!" Chevy had to continue yelling to make sure that Reinette heard him. "I'M GOING TO GET TO THE ROOF! I'M NOT HERE TO HURT ANYONE. I'M COMING UP TO MAKE SURE YOU'RE ALRIGHT! IT TAKE A COUPLE MINUTES!" Chevy yelled, before he scrambled back into the dormitory building. He needed to find stairs. By that point, he was trying to go up the concrete stairs with his duffle bag and body armor in tow. He wanted to run, but he was weighed down.
He needed to make sure that woman didn't do anything, while he was climbing up.

She waited, on the edge.
Noises can be heard faintly below.
They were raising in volume. The noises of footsteps going up to the door that led to the rooftop.
Chevy almost busted down the door, but it simply swinged open quickly.
Chevy breathed heavily. He had to jog up those stairs, he was on the verge of going out of breath. He already saw her. She was at the edge. He already recognized her, but he didn't get her name. She was there in the ship. He saw her gagging on sushi or something. "Please don't jump!" Chevy said, before he let another wheeze.
"Please..! We can talk it out!"

“What’s the point?”
She turned around, the wind almost shoving her off the dormitory. She raised her arms to speak but then they fell to her sides in defeat.
“What’s the fucking point?! We’re all already dead to them. We’re just test subjects, we’re just…”
She was sobbing.
“What’s the point of even living now?”

“What’s the point of even living now?”
Chevy was told the most obvious question.
"What's the point?" It was what he heard.
The wind was picking up now.
"I know things have gone bad, but we can't let them do this to us!" Chevy was referring to that asshole scientist and his cronies. "We didn't sign up to be test subjects. You know what they did was wrong. We are still alive. You're still alive and I'm still alive." Chevy wanted to explain things better. Give more of a concrete reason for Reinette to not jump.
"I woke up like 10 minutes ago and you're the only person I seen so far in this place. What you're about to do isn't going to solve anything. Just step away from the edge, please. It's hard. I know. I'm pissed off, too." Chevy wasn't depressed at his situation. In the model of grief, he was past the denial phase and more in the anger/bargaining phase. He was already bargaining with Reinette to not kill herself.

She didn’t move, letting the wind push her. Her hair was bouncing around, creating frizzles. Her red hair under her tuque barely cared than the body they were attached to was about to jump.
Reinette continued to cry.
She took a step back.
Reinette continued to cry.
She took a step back.
Chevy waited for a response. The wind was still blowing. There were tears in the eyes.
Then, with a sudden movement, she took a step back.
"NO!!" Chevy's fight and flight instinct kicked back again. He dropped the body armor, but the straps of the duffle bag was still around his right shoulder. He got weighted down, but he darted towards to the edge of the rooftop at Reinette. His left hand and arm extended to grab her. Chevy was trying to grab onto something. Anything to get her to not fall.

In Darwin's Theory, suicides were usually quick and done.
People died, and people stopped caring about the character. You could do a metacommentary on how you could easily discard a character you didn't like anymore by simply throwing them off a building, or taking too many pills, or something like jumping in front of a moving train. In Darwin's Theory, things were easier like that. You didn't need to work out the minute details about death if you wanted to.
When you wanted to die, you just died.
When you wanted to live, well, you hoped that the rolls didn't strike you.
It was that simple and clean. Reinette's suicide attempt was now neither. She was balancing off the edge, one foot still on the rooftop, the other dandling into the emptiness as a drone captured the scene from above. The man had caught her right wrist, and the bruising was hurting her. It brought her back from her despair, in a way. Her survival instinct kicked in despite wanting to end it all.
She jerked her body, her right side of her body literally on a razor edge of safety while the left side was 60 ft up in the air.
In Darwin's Theory, this part didn't happen because the thread was private and nobody entered it unless they wanted to have a mean talk behind the scene. Reinette's eyes widened at her unlikely survival.

She just had to be heavy!
His left hand was around her right wrist. Her foot was still on the edge, while her left body was still in the air. The woman didn't resist. Chevy thought that she might fight back, but she didn't. Chevy was in a particular position to process anything. His chest was forced to the edge, pressing into it, due to Reinette's weight. She was definitely heavier than Chevy, he knew.
"Come on! Don't let go!" Chevy pleaded. He was in the throes of desperation. A man being faced with the worst of circumstances. He was tugging, but he was sapping his strength out already.
Reinette's body jerked to the right. It gave Chevy less resistance. Chevy grabbed Reinette's wrist with his other hand. He was trying to pull her up with her only available arm. He was trying to get his feet situated at the edge, but he was still chest first to the rooftop edge. He was unable to grab at Reinette's foot, since he didn't want his grip to slip on her.
Don't fall! Shit!

She didn't want to die.
She didn't want to live.
She didn't want to-
Tentatively, she put her left foot on the edge again after swinging the emptiness below her. She closed her eyes, feeling the blood and the adrenaline pumping through her body like a drum. Her body didn't want to die. Her heart, as weak as it was, didn't want to die. Everything, except a fragment of her, didn't want to die.
But did she want to live?
She grabbed the man's wrist back.

Chevy felt the woman grip at his wrist. It tightened with urgency.
Come on, you son of a..!
Chevy could feel his back getting strained. He was trying to arch his body back. He needed to keep pulling, before he ripped a muscle!
