S014 - Bernard, Melodie

#1

Post by Jilly »

Name: Melodie Bernard
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Grade: 12
Hobbies and Interests: Writing, absurdist humor, horror, cooking, cleaning and organizing things, biology and animal care

Gift: Flesh-Sculptor
Power Details: Flesh-Sculptor grants Melodie the ability to telekinetically manipulate the muscle cells of organisms on a macroscopic scale, sense nearby tissue she can manipulate, and cause 'tumors' of human muscle tissue to grow on nearby surfaces. Melodie can make these tumors 'sprout' on surfaces she touches or that she can see within a radius of 30 meters, including skin and clothes. She can make these tumors collectively grow at a maximum of 0.5 kilograms a second, but this growth rate rapidly diminishes, halving every second until Melodie stops. These tumors are always 'alive' at the cellular level when they are first created, but begin to die shortly after being formed.
Limitations and Drawbacks: Flesh-Sculptor is only able to create and manipulate, but not destroy flesh. Melodie cannot sense or manipulate flesh that is further than 30 meters away from her, and any flesh that she has generated will begin to rot if she strays more than 30 meters away from it. Melodie is not able to grow flesh that is already dead, including previously created tumors, and is instead only able to manipulate it. Any flesh that Melodie manipulates must be attached to a frame (like a skeleton) for her to be able to finely control it, otherwise only being able to make it twitch ineffectually. Melodie's detection of flesh around her is an involuntary sense that can overwhelm her in certain situations. When Melodie is particularly emotional, anxious, or 'drifting off' mentally, her Gift can activate on its own, causing nearby flesh to twitch and making new tumors sprout nearby. Flesh-Sculptor is much weaker on living muscle tissue, requiring her to directly touch muscle fibers of victims (without any skin in the way) and only enabling her to cause mild convulsions and create small tumors after several minutes of contact. Melodie lacks fine control, which combined with her Gift's weak effects on living tissue, leaves her unable to heal people with it. Melodie has a hard limit of the amount of flesh she can control at once and grow in a single day, that limit being twice her own body weight, and her own muscles become cramped and painful when she exceeds half of it.

Appearance: Melodie is a girl of above average height and average weight, at 5’9 and 150 pounds. She is Caucasian, with fair skin that flushes easily, and her body fat is distributed in an hourglass shape. She has a rectangular face with upturned deep-set blue eyes, a straight nose, and slightly wide mouth. Her natural hair color is pale enough to make her thin eyebrows near invisible, and she dyes it indigo with the light roots beginning to grow out. It is wavy, and she usually wears it in a loose braid that almost reaches to her hip with straight bangs.

She wears light makeup, aiming for a natural look with the occasional inclusion of red lipstick or dark eyeliner and eyeshadow. Her skin is littered with moles and beauty marks, with a large port wine stain over patches of her torso. Her posture is decent. She has red, oval-framed reading glasses, but doesn't use them often. Her voice is deep and soft, often speaking with a downward infliction, and she does not fidget often, preferring to keep her hands either behind her back or clasped together at the front.

Without that much of a fashion sense to speak of, Melodie’s wardrobe is filled with plain shirts and skirts and she dresses quite conservatively and maturely for her age, though with the occasional counterculture touch without really standing out. On the day of the abduction, Melodie was wearing a white t-shirt with a gold geometric design on it, a high-waisted knee length black pleated skirt with a flannel pattern, an open, soft long black cardigan, and brown penny loafers. She had a gold bracelet on, along with a chain necklace, headband, and stud earrings.

Background:
  • Melodie was born in Bend, Oregon, to doctor-nurse couple Angela and Michael respectively. The two were financially comfortable and Melodie had two younger siblings, Destiny and Jason. Because of the entire family's Gifts revolving around human anatomy in a way that many found uncomfortable, Melodie was raised to be generally accepting of most gifts and is unphased with the casual displays of body horror in the house.
  • Her Gift manifested when she was three, when, following a tantrum, the chicken her dad was about to cook for dinner began convulsing. Since then, her parents have made an effort to avoid triggering her power by not cooking meat often, teaching her emotional management and how to get more control over it, and and referring her to a Gift counselor. With that said, her family does not find her Gift creepy and actively encouraged her to experiment with it, in the hopes that she could use it the way her parents could as a career. In fact, on the days when they do eat meat, sometimes her parents ask her to provide it for them.
  • Because of her forgetfulness and absent-mindedness, she sometimes doesn't remember to use her emotional management skills. This has led to a few incidents where she cried in class, which was followed by her power's outbursts, which has made her a bit odd in the eyes of her classmates. Reputation wise, Melodie is actually known less for her Gift and more for being a little awkward but generally nice and with a funny side once approached. She forgoes many extracurriculars in order to have more time studying and keep up her high grades, which limits her opportunities to make new friends. With the few friends that she has, she can be a bit of a doormat.
  • Since she causes many power-related accidents, especially in public, Melodie has taken it upon herself to clean her messes up. She finds the process of organizing and cleaning to be soothing, just not in public. In addition, she also is a bit of a neat freak according to her family, which she admits to, and she tends to overreact to messes and disorganized spaces around her.
  • Melodie, at first, thought that her creation of meat could be useful for cooking, and did in fact enjoy the slow process of making soups in particular. In her mind, it is much better than killing animals for meat. However, DNA testing has revealed her generated flesh to be human, which hasn't exactly stopped her, but she did stop cooking for people outside the family unless they ask. Her younger brother's Gift made him unable to eat certain foods and he required a specialized diet, and with her parents busy it is up to her to shop and cook for him.
  • Melodie is a lot more outgoing online, where she talks to many others with odd Gifts for reassurance. She enjoys poking fun at herself and talking about fictional scenarios with characters that have Gifts similar to her, mostly as a way to deal with the problems it causes her in real life. They come in two flavors—absurdist humor that she can laugh at when she is having a bad day with her power, and horror stories, which are a guilty pleasure of hers. Her peers would say that she has a vivid imagination, though the sheer effort and time she puts into even short posts also helps.
  • Melodie is interested in biology at least partially thanks to her parents' encouragement, and because she does enjoy a chance to experiment with her Gift in a safe environment. She loves animals and wants to become a veterinarian. Her family owns several pets, including a cat named Tee-Shirt and a hamster named Hammond. Her little sister named them.
Personality: Melodie is a bit shy to those she isn't acquainted with, though she opens up easily when someone talks about a topic she is interested in, showing a sense of humor and a vivid imagination. She has taken lessons on emotional management and does know a few tricks to calm herself down, but she is still prone to crying and the occasional outburst. Melodie hates how easily she loses control of herself, and the way that she reacts to many inconveniences with tears. She believes in the acceptance of all gifts, especially the ones that people judge easily and are afraid of/grossed out by like hers. Due to her own Gift and the prominence of Gifts in her family that are uncomfortable to some, she has radically different views on ethics regarding to anatomy and what is considered gross, having technically committed cannibalism and using her power to puppet uncooked food and even roadkill under the permission of her parents. She openly embraces the creepiness potential around those she is comfortable with, to the point where some of her friends are weirded out by her jokes about body horror, experiments on her power, and 'tricks' playing with food. In general, she is a little milquetoast and a bit of a doormat to most unless prompted to open up about a topic she is passionate about. She isn't lonely, however, and is fine with not having much social interaction. She does suffer from forgetfulness and a tendency to not focus on her surroundings.

Other Skills: Biology knowledge, gift adeptness

Conclusion: "Damn, this one kinda freaky! There's a joke about being 'a pleasure to meat you' somewhere, but honestly I'm too grossed out to think of anything." - Crocodile
