(Un)Happy Camping

Closed! Day 1. Around two hours after everyone woke up.

The southern edge of the rainforest contains evidence of a long abandoned expedition in the form of several large (but completely empty) degraded canvas tents, alongside tables, chairs, an empty fire pit, and several metal tent frames long since stripped of their coverings. Close to the nearby river as well as high hills blocking easterly winds from the ocean, this camp showed no sign of being anything but perfectly placed for its purpose, which makes it all the more suspicious as to why it no longer contains any useful items or human inhabitants.

((Fabiano Vecoli continued from The Illusion of Choice))

Eventually, Fabiano found the camp.

The journey had taken longer than it could have, mostly due to him being careful. After walking around the edge of the lake, he ended up walking on the edge of the rainforest. By the time he reached the Abandoned Camp, he had made two new conclusions about the island:

1. The island was one big slope, getting higher to the north. That meant he wouldn't need the compass in most places. Just looking where the hill was would suffice.

2. When it came to scales, the map was utterly useless.

After going from the farmhouse to the cave entrance, Fabiano had believed to get a grasp on how the map was scalled. His sometimes day-long climbing tours had given him a good sense for how long and wide he traveled. That was why he quickly realized how wrong the map was. The distance between the cave entrance and the lake that seemed to be nearly non-existant on the map was actually half of the distance between cave entrance and farmhouse. According to this logic, the lake itself should have also been bigger, but it was just as big as it looked on the map. And the line of smaller bushes that split the rainforest from the rest of the island was so thin Fabiano wouldn't have noticed it without the map.

Either Jack and his men had been half-assed about the map, or they didn't want to give Fabiano and the others too much useful information. Maybe it was a mix of both.

Fabiano was still wondering about this as he reached the campsite. Said campsite turned out exactly how he imagined it: A bunch of old tents, conditions ranging from "usable" to "nothing but the metal sticks". In the middle was a long-dead fireplace. A few tables were scattered around the edges of the camp, some of them accompanied by chairs or other seating-accomodations.

To the west and north were a row of steep hills. Behind them Fabiano could hear the familiar sound of the ocean. He had come from the east, where the rainforest started.

The troublesome direction was the south. Another open field greeted him, giving a good view at the river. And everyone there a good look at the camp.

But then again, the field was quite a distance. In fact, he could barely see the river. So if someone came here, then it would be more because they were seeking this place out and not because they had spotted him.

Having gotten a overview of the area, Fabiano started to search the tents for something useful, when he spotted another small but important detail.

Footprints.

There were quite a lot of them, mostly located around the fireplace. Fabiano tried to count how many different people had been there, but he wasn't a goddamn boy scout, so the footprints told him nothing. Neither how many nor how much time had passed since their departure. The direction the group had taken, however, was clear: All footprints led on the path to the river.

For some reason, this finding creeped Fabiano out. Things were going on. People were meeting, teaming up. What if this group decided to band together and get rid of everone else?

There was also Jack's threat of killing all of them if no one died within a day. What if some naive fools were going to talk everyone into non-participation or formed a group too big to resist that prohibited violence? Sure, Fabiano didn't look forward to participate in this messed-up game, but he had no intention of dying just so some goody-twoshoes could claim the moral high ground while hanging around in the afterlife.

Shaking his head, he decided to drop this thought. Even outsiders wouldn't be that stupid.

Then he began looking through each tent, searching for something that would help him survive the current situation. He was still freezing and without a weapon, after all.

((Austin Song continued from Nerves Of The Ocean Shores))

Austin really needed a weapon.

That was one of things that was on his mind as he was walking a bit ahead of Oscar and he kept on looking behind him every now and again, making sure that he hadn't lost sight of his potentional ally. It still felt so strange that he had actually asked someone to travel with him and he wondered if he really would benefit from this partner-up. He wasn't sure if Oscar would approve of his real plan which involved killing people and Austin still wasn't sure if he had the guts for it himself. But when he thought of his family and friends at home.... He just really, really wanted to go back.

But first, he had to survive.

Dying would make it all meaningless for him.

Austin glanced ahead of him and then he glanced back towards Oscar once more.

"Hey, there's a camp of some sort. Might be a good place for a break, yeah?" He suggested as he walked out into the clearing and his eyes wandered around at the tents and other stuff that was scattered about.

Oh. It's seemed like someone was there.

Austin frowned and he remained silent, waiting for his ally to catch up.

((Oscar continued from Nerves of the Ocean Shores))

They hadn't spoken much on the way over here. Couple of words exchanged here and there. Oscar had maintained a buoyant smile, and more consistently than back on the beach at that. He'd taken the maple syrup out of his bag twice, eyeing it speculatively, but had still yet to crack the seal, and had ultimately stashed it back into his bag.

Oscar wasn't too far behind Austin, and put a hand on a tree, leaning and looking things over.

"Yeah, sure! Hopefully that guy doesn't mind company."

Without waiting for any input from Austin, Oscar cupped his hands to his mouth and called out.

"Hey, guy! How are you doing?"

It didn't take long for Fabiano to come to the conclusion that there was nothing of value to find in the camp. If there had been anything, Jack and his crew had done a thorough job of throwing it away. A part of him had already expected this outcome, but he had still wanted to make sure.

What he had found, however, was a tent in surprisingly good condition, much better than most others. In the likely case of rain, it should offer decent shelter and maybe be a little bit warmer than outside.

But just as he exited the tent, he spotted two figures emerging out of the rainforest. Both were boys of his age-group. Apart from the backpacks that resembled Fabiano's, they held nothing. Also one of them was wearing an eye-catching hoodie with a Jason-Vorhees-picture.

Damn, I want this hoodie!

Not that Fabiano was a big fan of the Friday-franchise. He had seen all of them, but at the end of the day, he preferred Halloween. It was that this hoodie not only looked thick, but also roughly in his size. It would be a big step in solving his clothing-problem.

Unfortunately, his chances of getting it right now were slim. Firstly because the dude would surely not be willing to part with his hoodie. Secondly, because Fabiano still had no good weapon to threaten anyone with. Using the tree branch could easily result in the hoodie getting dirty with blood or other stuff, and Fabiano sure as hell did not want another person's hoodie with said person's blood on it. And thirdly, since there were two guys, it was two versus one.

So the hoodie would have to wait for now. Sad, but Fabiano was not going to risk another debacle like with Jen.

"Fine, I guess." He answered the question the non-hoodie-owner asked. "Or at least as fine as is possible in a situation like this one."

He made sure to hold the tree branch in a position that looked not too threatening but still showed that he was armed. While he was not going to start a fight right now, he wouldn't hesitate to defend himself, and he wanted them to know that. He also wanted them to piss off, so he was alone when the rain came.

"I have been looking around a bit, and this camp here is pretty much empty. Just a few tents with nothing in it. Guess they don't want us to have it easy." With that, the two new arrivals should have less reason to stick around. To mask his attempt at manipulation, he added another topic.

"You two haven't seen a gigantic plastic ball rolling around with a girl in hot pursuit, haven't you?"

Austin should have suspected that Oscar would have gone to the friendly approach towards this random guy and he was now just listening in silence while the newbie was responding. He almost smirked at the guy's answer to Oscar's question as it was as honest as it was gonna be and there was no way that anyone would be optimistic about all of what was going on.

Austin's eyes stared at the tree branch that the boy was holding and he guessed that he should have opted for a simple weapon like that or possibly a rock. Dammit. He really should have paid more attention to his surroundings more for anything that he could have used instead and now he hoped that this new guy wasn't going to start a fight at some point.

Austin listened more as the boy spoke and he had figured that there wasn't going to be anything at the camp anyway. He had just wanted to see if it would be a good shelter spot for him and Oscar. Walking around aimlessly without a goal in mind was a frustrating thing for Austin to think about in general. The kidnappers not wanting to make things easy for them was true and Austin wasn't surprised by that fact anyway.

Austin raised an eyebrow when the boy asked them about seeing a girl with a huge ball and he let out a small sigh. It seemed that there was someone else with another useless weapon out there somewhere.

A bird chirped out in the trees somewhere.

"Na, nid wyf wedi gweld merch â phêl."

Was all that Austin said in Welsh.

This guy didn't need to know that he could speak perfect English and he didn't want to get friendly with him like Oscar. There was something about the guy that seen.... off. Austin didn't know what yet. But he was sure to figure it out soon.

((Harun Tee continued from FC World A))

Harun felt unprepared when he looked at the three unfamiliar figures at the camp.

After he had successfully escaped the cave system by crawling through a small opening that led him into the rainforest, he kept wandering forward with no destination. His black shoes were muddy, and flecks of wood and bits of debris dirtied his baby blue shirt. The depicted octopus didn’t mind; it kept smiling.

A short stop that he used to go through his bag had also revealed that there was nothing inside he would call a weapon,..... unless your strategy was to bore others to death with random British facts. The book stood out, “The Great Book of British Useless Information” it said, and Harun was ready to throw it against a tree until he decided not to and secured it back into his bag. That was also the moment he noticed he was being filmed. It didn’t surprise him. Jack looked like the type of guy who’d be into that stuff.

Harun looked away and kept walking.

Which led him to where he was now.

The tree and bushes he was standing by covered him enough to not be immediately spotted, though the bird that sounded like it was trying to befriend him didn’t seem to care. Harun stood still and watched the others to get a feel for the situation.

"Huh?"

Then Oscar looked at Austin.

"...Huh?"

He blinked a couple of times, brow furrowing at his companion. He paused, rubbing at the back of his head, ruffling his puff as a perplexed smile slowly arrived on his face, crinkling his eyes.

Oscar returned his attention to the guy he'd called out to.

"Sounds weird. Did it escape?" Pause. "Was it an important ball? I mean, to get her chasing it."

Hoodie answered in a language Fabiano didn't knew. Interestingly, Non-Hoodie looked confused when Hoodie spoke. Something was not right.

Then Non-Hoodie inquired about Fabiano's admittedly pretty confusing question. He went on to explain. Since Hoodie might not understand him, he focussed on Non-Hoodie when talking.

"From how I got it, the ball is the 'weapon' this girl recieved. It is one of this big balls you can get into to walk on water. For some reason, she ended up inflating it. No idea what she was trying to accomplish. Me and the other girl who were there only watched in confusion as she ran off."

It took him a moment to spot the important hole in his story: he now would have to explain what happened to Jen, the second girl.

"However, enough of that." He said, with a little bit more importance in his voice. "That other girl is more important. She spend some time chitchatting, appearing like an okay person. She said her name was Jen. Dark brown skin, very short black hair, wearing a gray crop-top.

"And then she fucking tries to kill me by pushing me down some stairs! I had luck and survived with a few bruises. When she saw I was unharmed, she fleed.

"When you encounter her, be very careful. Don't believe a word she says."

It wasn't that he was a sore loser. It was just that right now Jen, who had gotten a clue to what Fabiano was really up to, posed a special threat to him. It seemed better to cut down her number of people willing to listen to her.

"Heh. Pêl fud fel arf, huh?" Austin shook his head a little and then he touched his chin with his index finger. A thoughtful expression was more present on his face for a few seconds and then it went back to being blank and emotionless as per usual. "Diddorol...."

Austin listened quietly afterwards since it seemed that the new guy thought that he couldn't understand what he was talking about and he seemed like he was more focused on Oscar anyway. Oscar had seemed confused on why he hadn't been talking as he had done so with him and Austin was going to use it to his advantage for a while. Until they had left this guy behind. He honestly didn't feel like they could be safe around this guy....

Wasn't that how he felt about Oscar as well before he partnered up with him...?

It seemed like this strange boy had been attacked by some girl named Jen and he wasn't sure how to feel about that story. It wasn't like he would get any proof about it really happening or not. Man, this really was a lot more harder to deal with. Trust him? Don't trust him?

"Diolch am y rhybudd."

Austin found himself taking a few steps back away from Oscar's side and he was now standing inbetween a tree and a bush. His fingers were brushing against the leaves of the bush absentmindedly.

One of them was suddenly too close to Harun’s liking.

Harun had moved further behind the tree when he noticed the guy whose language he didn’t understand move closer to where he was. At least he found Fabiano’s information to be useful, if a bit confusing. What was that about a ball? Whoever had picked those items seemed to want to turn this into a circus (deadly) and Harun was the clown. Not the only one per se.

Before the potential threat disguised in a fire hoodie could harm him if he saw him in his hiding spot, Harun grabbed the wrist that was brushing against the leaves of the bush, stepped forward, and grabbed Austin’s other wrist as well to bring his arms forcibly behind his back. You never knew, that’s what he learned from getting kicked in the crotch by the girl in the caves. He could still feel the discomfort but he knew, or hoped, it would pass. He wondered if Artie was alright.

Now he was out in the open and if the others wanted to try something, well, he had a shield now.

“I didn't mean to interfere but how about less talking and more watching where you’re going?”

Oscar nodded along while Fabiano spoke, once, twice, three times. Midway through he mouthed something that was probably 'Stairs?', tilting his head slightly to the side, before reverting to the nods.

Again he glanced to Austin. Oscar opened his mouth, expression just as confused as before, and then shut it again, cutting off whatever he was about to say with a slightly odd noise. He fiddled with the strap of his back, looked at Fabiano with a sheepish smile, and had taken a couple of steps after Austin when somebody rose up out of the underbrush to grab Austin.

"Whoa, whoa, whoa!" Oscar called, holding his palms out flat. "He's doing the watching, man, how about you relax with the grabbing?"

While Non-Hoodie listened intently to what Fabiano had to say, Hoodie didn't seem interested and looked at some bushes instead. To be fair, if he really spoke no english, listening wouldn't bring him much anyway.

But then again, Hoodie had been very attentive when Fabiano spoke at first. So was the language-barrier real or not?

All of a sudden, a opportunity showed itself.

To be exact, some dude appeared out of the bushes and grabbed Hoodie's arms and brought them behind Hoodie's back, similar to how a police officer would handcuff culprits. However, new guy didn't show any kind of weapon.

In other words, a hostage situation.

The new arrival spouted something between defense and advice. Non-Hoodie tried to calm him down.

Fabiano, however, was not going to let this chance pass.

The chance to take out a person without appearing like a murderer.

The new guy had done him a big favor. If Fabiano intervened on behalf of Hoodie, it would create the narrative that he was the hero just trying to help people while new guy was the villain, who started the violence by taking a hostage for whatever purposes. And no one would object to a hero killing a villian, right?

"Hey, you sure that this is a smart move right now?" Fabiano spoke while taking a step forward and giving the new guy a good look at his tree branch. He chose his words wisely. While he wanted this to result in a fight, it was important that new guy looked like the aggressor. "We are not going to give you our stuff. Now let your hostage leave and no one has to get hurt."

He had heard lines like these a thousand times in movies. Things never ended peacefully.

He betted on reality being the same.

Welp, Austin should have known to watch all of his surroundings. Including behind his back at all times.

He didn't move or speak as everyone else was either trying to make the situation worse or trying to deescalate it without him getting harmed. The guy who was holding onto him had a tight grip on his wrists and Austin would have to wait and see what was going to happened. The guy with the branch was trying to be a hero and it honestly made Austin feel a little irritated. He didn't want to owe this guy anything.

Austin let out a small sigh and he stared at Fabiano blankly.

"Hey, moron." He was letting his little stunt go as it would not help him in this hostage situation and he didn't think that the new guy would understand Welsh anyway. "How about you don't make this situation worse by threatening people with a tree branch." He then was now putting his attention back on his hostage taker. "Hey, new guy. Sorry for invading your private spot. I'm not gonna cause any trouble, so I would appreciate it if you would let me go."

If that didn't work....

Austin glanced slightly at the tree beside him and the strong guy. He would have a plan in mind.

Harun could feel his eyebrow twitch again, just like back in the dark cave when he had heard Matthew’s voice, but of course, their reactions were only natural. Smart perhaps. Harun didn’t go for the friendly approach on purpose. His expression didn’t change much, but his jaw looked tense when his grip on Austin’s wrists tightened. They were pretty much the same height and he was looking over Austin's shoulder to stare at the others. He thought Oscar was ready to throw hands for a moment, but it seemed to be more of a defensive gesture. And if he was ready to throw hands, Harun was too.

“I’m just giving chilli pepper boy some advice,” he said clearly in response to what Oscar said. Why chilli pepper? It was his first thought when he saw Austin’s hair. The pink strand looked red to him and he didn’t get it but Harun didn’t care about others’ style choices. It was the least of his concerns right now.

When Fabiano started approaching him, all he could do was glare.

“As my hostage, I’m afraid I can’t let you go just yet,” he replied to Austin, then stared back at the boy with the cap. “How about you put your pathetic weapon down? You might regret if you don’t.”

"Hey man, man, man."

Oscar moved across a little, placing himself between Fabiano and Harun, though, with his attention seemingly on Harun, it was unclear as to whether that was intentional. He smiled, showing teeth.

"We're already in a hostage situation here, you know? Do we really gotta double up on that? I don't know about you guys but that's a two-for-one sale I kinda wanna skip."
