Everyone's Got Their Own Circle of Sorrow

Day 2, post announcement

The dwellings found on the western side of the settlement were occupied by the poorer denizens of the town. These buildings tend to be low, small, densely-packed, and in questionable states of repair. Those that are more than one story tend to be divided into apartments, and were probably largely tenanted by sailors and dockworkers. The architecture is largely bare stucco and wood, and roofs are mostly flat. Gardens, when present, are small and poorly-maintained. Many of the buildings were clearly shared by many inhabitants, evidenced by extremely efficient layouts and numerous beds. The light here is poor, and there are a number of alleys and tight spaces suitable to concealment... or ambush.

((Pippa Andolini continued from Mr. Wharf? Fire.))

Pippa leaned against a wall near a ground floor window as the announcement petered out of existence. She let out a sigh and briefly closed her eyes. She had been dreading this announcement, but it looked like some of her fears were assuaged. Sure, they were still prisoners of war and more of her classmates were dead, meaning that more of her classmates were now also killers, but it was the announcement of Lena's death that had given her some relief. Lena's death was credited as an accident. They didn't blame Freya nor Fisher for dropping her, nor did they find Pippa complicit in hanging back and failing to contribute. As far as Pippa could see, the Americans had ruled the death purely accidental, which meant Pippa and her allies were in the clear for now. No one would be hunting them down for this death like they would for people like Cassandra or Oliver, if this announcement was to be believed.

Still, with similarly brutal descriptions for other killers, Pippa had to assume they had been right to be distrustful of Lena. Sure, it'd be just like the Americans to over-inflate the brutality of these killings, but it would also be too transparent. They still had a goal to show the British were as bad as they are, and they'd benefit more from simply letting the British POWs choose their fate instead of having it exaggerated by the announcer's words. Pippa would have to assume that her peers were broken from the severity of this situation, and thus were going ahead with killing their classmates as brutally as possible. Pippa knew they'd have to avoid such descriptions if it came to it. There was a lot of distrust to go around, and Pippa didn't want any of that coming her way.

The trio had fled the wharf and ended up in the Western Dwellings after what happened with Lena. They took turns staying guard, with Pippa being the one awake when the announcement came on. She knew things were still going to be rough with Freya after Lena's death. She was sure Freya still blamed her and not nature for Lena's death, and Pippa was willing to let her continue to do so as long as Freya could just move on and accept that Pippa was still better to have around than Lena. Fisher was harder to gauge at this point, so Pippa was sure he could still be swayed to at least consider Pippa's point of view.

But that wasn't important right now. It was a new day, and there was more to come. They'd have to congress over their pitiful breakfast and decide where to go from there.

"Well, it sounds like we're almost halfway through this experience," she said to Freya and Fisher. "I guess we should discuss our next course of action."

((Freya Nygård continued from Mr. Wharf? Fire.))

She was still stuck having to listen to Pippa talk. Freya wasn't a fan of that outcome but she didn't have any alternative. Pippa was part of the group and it was dangerous to be by yourself, plus the idea of just saying fuck that to the American's only worked if they had everyone. Therefore, Pippa had to stay with them so that they could have everyone. Freya didn't like it. But it didn't matter if she liked it, that was the situation. It was how it was.

The night had been rough. Freya had been angry nearly all of it, it made sleep hard and she knew she hadn't been out long when the speakers kicked in to announce the previous toll. Lena was just listed as a victim of falling. Galahad wasn't mentioned. That was good. Freya was happy about that. It was about the only thing she was happy with. Her best friend was still out there and she was still going to find him.

As the announcement played Freya had busied herself with rewrapping the bandages on her hands. They were still scuffed and torn by her destruction of some twats living room but she knew the importance of making sure she had fresh dressings. Occasionally they stung and itched but that was just a sign they were healing.

Her mind was beginning to drift to what she would do when she saw Galahad, probably yell at him for being an idiot and not finding her sooner. She smiled slightly at the thought but it was gone as quickly as it appeared because Pippa began to talk.

"The plan stays the same." Freya said as she looked over at Pippa. "We get everyone together and tell the American's to go fuck themselves."

Sleep? In this particular situation? Fisher Darden would have complained that he felt like he was already dead, if it hadn't felt horrendously disrespectful to those who hadn't already died. So he hadn't. He hadn't said much of anything since they'd left the wharf, because what else was there to say? He didn't want to complain; telling jokes felt inappropriate.

Besides. Jokes didn't seem to mean a whole lot anymore.

((Fisher Darden continued from Mr. Wharf? Fire.))

If he had to put a number on it, Fisher would have figured that it took at least two hours for him to get his heart rate back down to a reasonable level after Lena had died. Watching someone he'd tried to save plummet to their demise and feeling like his own refusal to let her accompany them had been a factor in her death was enough to make him feel like a hollow shell of himself. They'd found a minimal hideaway to ride out the night, but none of them had said much of anything to one another.

At least, until the announcements had come on, detailing the carnage that the Americans were- wait, no. That wasn't right.

The carnage that they were bringing down upon one another.

Pippa seemed incredibly self-assured about the whole thing, and Freya had been nothing but angry; neither one being the kind of person that he'd want to talk to or discuss his concerns with about how all of this was going to end. Freya was sure that they were going to stick it to the Americans and say the hell with all of them. It was a good plan, one he agreed with entirely. The issue was - what happened after that? It would be really simple for the Americans to drop down and blow up them up, evidently like they had with Fleurette. He hadn't heard the explosions in the distance, but if the Americans were prepared to kill the British students off themselves...

It was all a lot to think about. Compounded by the fact that the person he'd stated he wanted to find back when they had decided to stay together; Daniel Newhouse, had gotten himself killed. Fisher's mind had gone blank at that - he couldn't even recall who'd killed her, or how Daniel had died. Just that he was dead. He couldn't believe it. They hadn't even been all that close, but just imagining the same guy that he'd hung around with, that he'd run in the same social circles with? To imagine him dead was shocking and didn't feel real.

Fisher had been quietly musing about in his own mind for a while now. It wasn't until his brain finally gave him a break from the horrible thoughts about his now-deceased classmates that he realized that his companions were actually talking to one another. He wondered if they'd end up yelling at one another this time.

Again.

Listening for a moment, he gave Freya a nod in agreement. He had no love lost toward the Americans and while he had his own reservations about the plan, it was definitely the right move. Plus, he trusted her a lot more than he did Pippa. The fact that Pippa hadn't helped them at the wharf gave him an ache in the pit of his stomach.

"No need to change it up, now." His voice was quiet, flat. He was exhausted. "They can't get enjoyment out of it if we don't cooperate."

As if we have a choice were the words that he didn't say, but no one needed to hear that. Not now, anyway.

Pippa nodded as Freya and Fisher looked to stick to the original plan. Even though Fisher lost the person he was looking for, they still had Freya's friend to look for, so it wasn't completely within reason to change things up.

"Alright," Pippa said. "We can try to check the areas of town we haven't visited yet."

Pippa reached for her bag and pulled out the map. She quickly glanced over it.

"We can move west. We stuck to the eastern portion of the peninsula yesterday, so it's likely there could be people hiding in the western dwellings or around the wall. Of course, we'll now have to be more careful of anyone we come across. There's at least half a dozen people here who have blood on their hands, and the odds are they won't be taken out by the arena itself or the Americans, so we've probably used up any fortune yesterday. We'll all have to stay on extra alert today and be prepared for anything."

Pippa folded the map up to put back in her bag. To say today would be more dangerous was obvious, but she figured it couldn't hurt to say it.

If she looked at it logically Freya knew that she needed to calm down. They said you couldn’t remain angry forever but Freya had been angry at everything her whole life. But currently, the focus of that anger fell solely on Pippa.

Lena had died because of the girls inaction. But instead of caring or showing any remorse Pippa was carrying on as if she hadn’t done anything wrong. She had decided to continue acting as if she was a great leader.

Bullshit.

The more Pippa talked the more Freya was done with her. She held it in for as long as possible but then it boiled over.

“Do you even fucking care?”

It was inevitable really. Once the anger started flowing Freya found herself accepting it. She had gotten to her feet, the bandage on one of her hands not tied properly and trailing behind her.

“One of our class fucking died in front of us and you act like you don’t give a shit!”

Pippa's head snapped towards Freya as the other girl voiced her foul-mouthed displeasure with her. Pippa let Freya say her quick piece, accusing Pippa of not caring that one of their classmates died in front of them. She put her hands on her hips, feeling the shape of her parachute knife in her suit pocket.

"Freya, I assure you I do care that people are dying," Pippa replied. "Obviously, there are good people here being needlessly killed."

She crossed her arms.

"But wasting our time being sad about it won't help us in the moment. Surviving and avoiding dangerous people is what will. Lena may have been my classmate back home, but here in the west, she was a murderer who we had no reason to trust wouldn't slaughter us like she did Calista."

Pippa could feel her face getting flushed. She normally didn't let herself get so agitated, but Freya was accusing her of being inhuman, which she really didn't like at all.

"You want me to cry over Lena? I can cry when I lay flowers on her grave when we're back home. But right now, I'd rather not think about what we could have done when we need to think about what we're going to do."

"What wecould have done?"

That was the last straw for Freya. Pippa was a high and mighty bitch and she was fucking sick of it. After everything, she was still just going to sit there and act like she was in the right? Fuck that. Freya wasn't going to let her just brush it off. She was deflecting, acting as if she'd actually tried.

She was pretending she hadn't been a coward. That in the moment she hadn't frozen up then acted in self-interest. Freya saw through that shit. There was no avoiding what had happened and she wasn't going to let Pippa do that. She stomped closer and started at Pippa, eyes aflame. Her finger jabbed into Pippa's chest in accusation.

"You didn't do a fucking thing."

And now Freya was close enough to moisturize Pippa's face with her spit. Pippa rarely let anyone ever get this close to her, so she felt particularly vexed that Freya would invade her personal space like this. Freya and her finger could continue to accuse Pippa of doing nothing, but Pippa still had every reason to believe she didn't need to take her anger like this.

"For the last time," Pippa sternly replied, "the wharf was starting to collapse further. If I had gone over there, all four of us would have died. I held back so that there would be fewer casualties and made sure we wouldn't lose any of our supplies in the chaos."

Pippa brushed some of her hair behind her ears.

"You may not like my choice, but someone has to be a utilitarian here if we want the best chance to survive."

She stared Freya in the eyes. If Freya still couldn't get it, then that just meant their country's education system failed her.

It had barely taken but a few minutes, but things had certain escalated to a much higher degree. The more he'd thought about it, the more he agreed with Freya on the point that Pippa should have come over and helped. She could make excuses all she wanted, but the fact was that it was very likely she was just hiding her own cowardice behind the mantle of being a smart leader. Which was fine - really - Fisher wasn't going to begrudge her for being scared. Hell, he was terrified himself! After all, he'd just seen an honest-to-goodness classmate of his plummet to her honest-to-goodness death. He still felt like a hollow shell; images within his mind that he wasn't sure would ever depart.

So as annoyed as he may have been himself, now was not the time to turn on one another.

As the two girls got face-to-face, Fisher jumped to his feet and rushed over, standing a foot away from them but calling out, waving his hands in the air.

"Hey, hey! Le-let's just calm down, okay? We can talk this out, right?"

He barely believed the words coming out of his mouth, and they sounded weak and unsteady. While he was generally siding with Freya in this particular argument, the girl was a bit of a loose cannon. She'd woken up angry and that anger hadn't dissipated one bit.

Fisher hoped that she might see reason - even for just a moment.

It seemed to be increasingly in absence the further into hell they went.

Freya could have backed down. She could have avoided escalating things any further. Shit, that would have been the smart thing.

She continued to glare at Pippa, before turning and tossing her blazer away. It had been falling off her shoulders anyway and she wasn't going to need it. Fisher was right, they needed to calm down. But that wasn't her. She had never done stuff like that.

Plus, there was a specific satisfaction to be had and if Pippa wasn't going to show any remorse neither was she. Backing down was for pussies anyway. You had to stick to your beliefs.

She spun around and her fist connected hard with Pippa's face.

It. Felt. Great.

Fisher's words would have been words Pippa would have agreed with. Talking it out was what they were doing, and she felt she was doing a good job at it. Freya, however, didn't seem to understand the value of thoughtful discourse. Pippa momentarily thought she did when the girl quietly turned away. Pippa was ready to speak again about following their objective when suddenly all potential words and statements were knocked out of Pippa, along with the air in her lungs and some blood in her gums.

Pippa felt Freya's fist connect with her mouth and send her back. She slammed her back to the wall and slid down to the floor. She was lucky enough that her head didn't hit the wall, but she still felt enough pain radiating from her jaw.

Pippa let out a short cry as she took a moment to gain her bearings. She was sitting upright on the floor of some dirty house, and now she felt her mouth starting to fill up with blood. She opened her mouth a bit and watched as a glob of blood fell out of her mouth and onto the ground between her legs. As Pippa stared at the puddle of blood and saliva on the ground, she noticed something white mixed in. Her eyes widened and her tongue moving along her lower row of teeth. It was gone. One of her canine teeth was gone, and there it was, resting amid the dust and asbestos of this house.

Pippa panted as more blood dribbled out of her mouth and onto the floor. She messed up her teeth. Pippa's mom could never afford braces for her growing up with all the poverty and struggles they went through. Pippa had to take extra care of her teeth all throughout her life, brushing two or three times a day, flossing regularly, and doing whatever she could to never require braces. She had been blessed with fairly straight teeth, so it wasn't like she was going to need braces, and Pippa could surely take care of her teeth as well as she did the rest of her body, so she never dwelled on missing out on braces as a teen.

But Freya ruined it. Pippa would have to get a crown or something. Their dental plan might not cover that, and she doubted the Americans would replace a lost tooth for her. Freya ruined her image, and it would probably cost her mom a ton of money to replace the tooth if she got home.

And all because Pippa was trying to be pragmatic, which Freya in her tiny mind couldn't comprehend no matter how many times Pippa explained it to her.

Pippa looked up from the ground at Freya, her expression one of shock at the girl who dared punch her.

That bitch.

She punched the bitch right in her bitch mouth. Pippa was going to have a hard time talking all her shit when she was missing teeth. Freya rubbed the knuckles of her hand as she watched Pippa spit blood out of her mouth and onto the floor of the house. If she was to guess based on the amount of blood Freya assumed she had knocked a tooth out.

It was a good feeling. It was a release. All the anger at the situation and at Pippa released in one solid blow. Had she just dissolved the one alliance she had? Maybe. Was it worth it? Yes. If she was lucky maybe she'd knocked some sense into the other girl and she'd realise how she was acting.

There was no follow-up. They weren't in a fight. It had just been the one strike. It was all Freya had needed.

She smirked at Pippa as the other girl glared up at her in shock from where she had landed on the floor.

"You had that coming."

Pippa stared up at Freya, the smug woman proud over having knocked Pippa's tooth out. She was going on about how Pippa deserved that. Pippa couldn't see how. She was trying to be a leader. She was trying to make choices that would help the three of them. She was the one who was trying to be rational and logical in a place where they couldn't expect everyone to be rational and logical. There was always a risk and danger to ventures such as this that required a degree of emotional distance, and yet Freya continued to take umbrage with Pippa's thinking and reacted with violence. Pippa averted her gaze from Freya, starring back at the blood on the floor.

"I see..." Pippa muttered. "So that's how it is."

Pippa slowly stood up, keeping her head hanging low. Her mouth still had the copper taste of blood in it. She continued to trace the gap in her teeth with her tongue.

"Well, I think this changes things," Pippa said, brushing her hands over her skirt to get any dust off it. "It appears we've reached an impasse in our partnership."

Pippa raised her head up to meet Freya's gaze, her hair framing her face so that she could only see out one eye.

"You don't like me. You want to hurt me. That's alright. I don't think I like you very much either."

Pippa brushed her hair back behind her shoulders and adjusted her headband, which was displaced a bit after she fell to the ground.

"I'm sorry I tried to think of our survival and our best interests at the cost of a dangerous person outside our group. It's clear you don't like me for making those decisions, even though I highly doubt you'd ever put yourself in the position where you had to make those decisions."

Pippa walked closer to Freya.

"But if that's how it will be, then sure, we can part ways here. It's clear we can't benefit one another any longer."

Pippa was now close enough for Freya to repeat her finger tapping action from earlier. Her hands moved up to her hips, with one moving slightly higher than the other, inching closer to her jacket pocket.

"I'm really sorry this partnership fell through," Pippa said. "But you know, for a brief time, I really thought we could survive together. I really thought we could have worked together for our collective benefit and to prove ourselves to our country in this war. But I guess I was a fool for thinking of you in such high regard."

Pippa moved slightly closer.

"So, I guess this is goodbye."

In an instant, Pippa quickly moved her right hand towards Freya's stomach. Her other hand grabbed Freya's hip and pulled her closer. Pippa stared past Freya and moved her blood-filled mouth closer to Freya's ear. She pushed the parachute knife in deeper, and without looking, could feel her hand starting to get warm with Freya's blood.

"Sorry, but with your terrible attitude, you're a danger to me, to Fisher, and to everyone. But don't worry, I can at least do this more gracefully than Lena would have done it to you."

Pippa pulled the knife out and pushed Freya back. She glared at the girl before her, watching as the red spot on her shirt continued to grow.

"You had this coming."

Pippa kept on talking. It looked like getting her tooth knocked out for talking all her shit hadn't taught her anything. The way she spoke though made it crystal clear she was delusional. She spoke about her decision with Lena as if Freya hadn't been there and had to make the same decision. The difference was she hadn't picked the selfish option. She also hadn't tried to hide from the decision she made. That was the difference between them.

But still, Pippa kept on talking. Freya let her, it was only fair to let the girl have her little moment before she inevitably stormed out. She kept the smirk the entire them. The way Pippa was talking was ridiculous. It was all so fake and sterile. Put together to an unfathomable degree, still trying to be proper about everything.

And there was the goodb-Freya realised too late.

Pippa lunged forward, knife in one hand, the other pulling Freya in. A sharp pain began to emanate from Freya's abdomen as the knife slid in. Pippa gave an extra push on the end, just to ensure the job was done. Freya's eyes widened as she stared at her. A warmness began to spread out from the point where Pippa had stabbed. She had forgotten about the girls' knife. She'd had it the whole time. She'd told her about it when they first met and when it mattered most Freya had forgotten it existed.

The girl pushed her back and Freya stumbled. Pippa mocked her by echoing what she had said after the punch. Fucking bitch. Freya stepped forward to swing with a big overhand but the pain in her gut reverberated through her whole body when she moved. Instead, Freya found herself tipping forward and falling at Pippa's feet. The loose length of bandage billowing behind her.

Everything happened too quickly for Fisher to react, so instead he stood there with a stupid look on his face. None of it had been all that expected; not the punch, the blood, none of it. In better times, he would have put money on the idea that if you put Pippa Andolini and Freya Nygard in a room together and forced them to work together, at some point, one of them would get slapped. Some people were just oil and water.

He hadn't intervened when Freya had punched her.

He hadn't intervened when Pippa had retorted with an overly formal, showy divorce speech.

He hadn't intervened when Freya took a knife to the gut.

The last bit still didn't seem real. Pippa had been going on about their mutual dislike. So fine, they'd part ways. That made sense to him - he figured they'd have been better together than alone, but at this point, especially after the punch? Yeah, okay. Enough was enough. He'd assumed Pippa would haughtily do what she did, talk and talk and talk some more until she'd talked herself onto a high horse to which she would ride off into the sunset. That was all expected.

But the sudden violence?

Much like at the wharf, he'd realized what was happening far too late, and someone was going to have to pay the price for his tardiness.

Freya fell, blood pouring from her wound, at Pippa's feet, leaving the girl with the no-longer-impeccable teeth standing over her like a hunter over prey. Fisher's heart started to pound in his chest. He had to do something, and he had to do it now.

"Oh!"

Only one word, one concept echoed in Fisher's mind, over and over again. It was a basic fight-or-flight response, but amplified a million times over.

Distance.

Barely shifting to his left, Fisher stepped over and quickly grabbed Freya under her arms, backpedalling a few meters back of Pippa. As he did, a look of shock and disgust went across his face aimed solely at his former companion.

"What the fuck is wrong with you!? Are you mad?"

Glancing down at Freya's injury, it seemed worse than grim. There was blood everywhere, a sight which made him feel slightly faint. Swallowing his terror, he tried to locate the wound and helplessly tried to apply pressure.

"Come on, Freya. Don't die, please don't die!"

He didn't know what the hell he was doing.
