Though Sebastien seemed less interested in observing her like some sort of peculiar painting, Simon was not letting himself be dissuaded so quickly. He seemed to totally ignore Sebastien's attempt to change the subject and went back to Nate. One the bright side, she didn't have to start thinking about the homework she had that was likely going to go undone when she got home.

He did ask about her sketch, which was a nice topic, at least. She glanced down at it, trying to decide how to encapsulate the description of the fantastic story she envisioned, the charred landscape, the noble yet savage warriors, bound by honor and duty to their people, lest they be unfettered by morality.

Since he didn't have a name of any sort (Nate didn't usually name her characters), she supposed the best description would be to assign a name to his clan? The unity of his clan was perhaps the most important thing about his existence. Then again, without context, did a name really mean anything? She could do something simple and describe him. That might work.

Having paused for a few seconds to think while looking at the nearly-complete piece, Nate bit her lip before returning her gaze to Simon. "He's...a warrior. His people live in a desert."

Satisfied with her explanation, she returned to the piece, adding further details and rough guide lines to enhance his inhuman properties.

Well, this was rapidly getting uncomfortable. Sebastien wouldn't entirely put it past Simon for that to be intentional. And now he was sandwiched between Simon and the wall, with no escape unless he wanted to slide under the table and scuttle to freedom like some kind of insect person.

A warrior who lived in the desert, huh? Sebastien still had a ton of questions, or would have if he actually had any real interest in what Nate was drawing. Right now, he was pretty well occupied with regretting all of the choices that had landed him in this situation.

"Cool," he mumbled, no longer really paying attention.

"A warrior from the desert.... That sounds pretty amazing."

Simon was not lying. He thought that the warrior would have a very interesting backstory. Maybe he could be a hero who protects his village. Maybe keeping bandits or outsiders away. He wondered why he was even thinking about it. He guessed that he just liked the idea of it. Should he suggest the idea to Nate? She might reject it so he was going to hold back for now. He couldn't forget that Sebastien was still with them. That would be too rude of him to do.

He turned his head to show Sebastien a small smile, raising his eyebrow slightly. "You okay there, man?" He asked curiously as he placed his chin onto his hand and he watched his friend's reaction carefully. "I'm not making this uncomfortable for you, am I?"

You might be making it more uncomfortable for him, Simon.... Geez, you only wanted to see him.... and Nate, of course!

"I'm fine," Sebastien lied. He did it out of habit, the ingrained tendency to keep social interaction moving smoothly because he had no easy way out. Immediately afterwards, it sank in that he did, in fact, have an easy way out and had just further complicated things for himself and extended the time he would have to spend sitting here.

"I don't think she's paying attention," he added a moment later, when no immediate response from Nate was forthcoming. "Maybe we should leave her alone...?"

Simon gazed at Nate for a moment when Sebastien mentioned that they should leave her alone. That was fine with him. She seemed really busy with her sketch and he decided that it was best to leave her to it. Now he could focus his attention on Sebastien. He still needed to get something to drink but he would wait a while before he would do so.

"So...." Simon started to say to Sebastien and he shifted slightly in his chair. He wanted to talk to him about something. But what? He didn't want to talk about his homework, just in case, it would be a bit boring. It was funny as he would normally enjoy talking about it. But this time he wanted to talk about a different topic.

"So how your love life going for you, friend?" He asked out of curiosity and just out of pure interest. Sebastien's life was mostly the only one who he wanted to know more about every day. It was a bit like a strange hobby of his. But it was fun to know more things about his old-time friend. "Anything good happen to you lately?"

As the other two began to shift their conversation away from Nate, she continued working. The piece was nearing completion, each sharp line stretched by a slight blurring into shade and depth of lighting. Nate wasn't a major proponent of pencil work, since pens were cleaner and charcoal made shading much easier, but it was occasionally useful as a mixture of both.

Oh, had she finished her pastry? The croissant had been nice, a warm and flaky baked good with a sweet, mild cheesy filling. She'd eaten it without realizing, it seemed, since it wasn't on the table anymore and she definitely remembered biting into it.

She picked up her coffee, but it was gone, too. When had she finished it? It occurred to Nate how silly it was to forget to eat so often that you didn't even notice when you were eating. She really needed to get out of that habit.

Gathering up her implements of creativity (a lofty phrase for pencils and paper) and sliding her sketchpad into her bookbag, Nate quietly rose from her seat, slid lightly past the two cohorts, who had been polite enough to let her finish, before moving out of the coffee shop with a faint smile on her face, pleased with the product of her excursion. She did not say a word to Sebastian or Simon in the process.

And there she went.

What a weird encounter all of this was. Frankly, Sebastien ought to have just taken his book and left, but he was still stuck between Simon and the wall.

"Bye then, I guess," he called after Nate. No response.

He turned back to Simon with a flat look. "Anyway. That happened."

Simon could only watch as Nate basically bailed on them and made a quiet exit. He hadn't thought that she would leave while he and Sebastien were having a chat. She didn't even say goodbye to them. That was her choice. He didn't really know her so it wasn't a big deal. He wondered if she was the type who didn't really like talking to other people that much.

"Huh. I know, right?" He gave a slight nod to Sebastien and then he realised that he was supposed to be somewhere else in about five minutes or so. "Oh, man. I got to go, Seb. I'll see you around!"

He got his bag off the ground and he got up from his chair. He felt bad for leaving Sebastien on his own. He almost did. It looked like he had been making Sebastien uncomfortable after all.

He let out a huff as he left his friend behind.

Welp.

...

........

Sebastien pulled his phone out of his pocket and glanced at the time. He didn't need to be home for a while.

He settled into a more comfortable position in the booth and opened his book again.

Trial 3(?) Conclusion: Trial suspended indefinitely because who cares.
