Memorial Address

A small shrine. It offers a reasonable amount of shelter, although its isolated position means there is a risk of being cornered.

((Noriko Nakagawa continued from The Worst Game in History))

Noriko ran. Not even bothering to look back or stick around the school area, she just ran. She didn't stop until she had arrived at the odd looking building she stood in front of now. It was hard to make out in the darkness just what exactly the building was, although the large wooden torii gate practically gave it away. Taking a moment to look around and make sure no one else was around, Noriko walked timidly up the steps to the main building.

The young girl checked the tiny, one room building, making sure it was empty, before sitting on a corner near the entrance. Breathing heavily from her run, Noriko finally took the time to finally look through her duffel bag. She quickly found the compass, map, and flashlight, but decided against checking those just yet. She could wait for the sun to come out, rather than risk giving away her position. Digging through he bag some more, her tiny hand came into contact with something box shaped.

Removing the box from her bag, she found herself looking at what appeared to be a a box of bullets. Fishing around in the bag some more revealed the other half of the equation, an old style revolver of some sort. Noriko was loathe to use such a tool, but if it meant her survival, then she would have no choice. Straining her eyes to read the accompanying manual through the dim moonlight, she managed to get the weapon loaded with the bullets.

After this, Noriko could do nothing but wait, with nothing but her thoughts to keep her company in her desolate situation. If only Shuya were here... he'd know what to do... Upon thinking this, and given her location, she thought it'd be respectful to give a small prayer for the soul of the boy who had sacrificed his life. A sacrifice that would not be for nothing, so long as Noriko had anything to say about it.

(Takako Chigusa continued from The Worst Game in History)

The Shinto Shrine was a tiny affair - a small shrine built at the very edge of the island, a far-cry from the school that the students had just left. For those who knew Girl 13 however, this distance was child's play. Takako Chigusa was a runnner, the best in the entire school. She ran laps every chance she had. So when she stumbled across a dirt road, she had decided to just follow it. It wasn't like she had anything else to do... other than fighting to the death with her own classmates. To Takako Chigusa, that problem posed more of an annoyance than a danger. She understood that she was in danger, but she refused to acknowledge it any further.

When she finally stopped nearby the stairs leading to the shrine, she wasn't in the least bit tired. Takako had to stop and catch her breath but it was only for a second. She was right back up and running. Her eyes met the stairs and then looked up further. A shrine? The torii gate reassured her of this. She closed her eyes, pushing her weapon in the strap of her skirt as she ascended the steps.

Takako had not seen the girl sitting on the ground. The darkness was much too deep, and Takako's eyes were still adjusting. However once she managed to go up the short fleet of stairs, she became aware of the presence. Without any hesitation she pulled the Walther PPK, a small pistol Out of alert (or perhaps fear?) she cocked the hammer to her pistol and pointed it at the girl. It was around this time where she realized just who she had been aiming her gun at. There was a vague memory but seeing as she had little interest in getting to know many people at school Takako wasn't too sure. She lowered her pistol only a tiny bit, feeling as though she had overreacted. Of course this girl could be faking her own meek ineptitude to throw Takako off guard so she didn't even think of letting go of her weapon. At least, not until she knew what the girl was holding.

"You." She said bluntly, her eyes unwavering. "You're name is Noriko." While she technically didn't pose a question, she expected the girl to nod. She waited a second for Noriko to respond before moving on. "Now, you planning on killing anyone?"

As soon as Takako entered the small shrine, Noriko's grip on her revolver tightened. She had hoped that no one would come, at least until morning when things would be easier to see. Night was dangerous, as you could never tell what someone may be hiding. As soon as Takako became aware of her presence, Noriko found herself staring down the barrel of a gun. There was a few tense moments before Takako seemed to recognize her, and she lowered her gun. slightly.

Nodding her head in response to Takako's statement of her name, she responded by asking "You're Chigusa, right?" Despite the fact Takako had used her first name, Noriko was too polite to do so in kind.

When she asked if she planned on killing anyone, Noriko loosened her grip on her gun. No, she wasn't planning on killing anyone... was she? She didn't want to hurt anyone, but what if someone attacked? What would she do then? She had vowed to survive, but could she back up her statement? If someone attacked her at this very moment, would she be able to pull that trigger? Hopefully, she wouldn't have to find out.

"No, I have no plans on killing anyone." Noriko finally said in response.

"Yes," was Chigusa's only response. A rude answer to be sure. She used her other hand to brush the hair out of her eyes, lowering the gun with her hand. Noriko Nakagawa was harmless, this she had figured out on her own. Despite this, Takako was still very cautious so she held the gun as tightly as she could. Once Noriko assured her own assumptions, Chigusa finally felt it was safe for her to put the gun away.

Takako's eyes left Noriko's, reaching out to look at the shrine. It was only a one room building, not unlike many small shrines that she had seen in the country. Chigusa was definitely not impressed by the building but it was still in good shape. It was going to have to do, seeing as how she had nothing else to work with.

Takako Chigusa was not much for conversation but she felt that, given the circumstances, she had to say something. Besides, she had pointed a gun right in Noriko's face, and while she would never admit it she was embarrassed about it. Even so, she struggled at coming up with anything appropriate. She stared at the shrine for a moment, thinking.

"How are you holding out?" Chugusa forced out, now looking down at Noriko. Then, in an almost ironic fashion, she asked another question. "Has anyone given you trouble?"

(Hiroki Sugimura continued from The Worst Game in History)

Damn it, no!

Hiroki Sugimura left the building and immediately sprinted away, stopped, and began counting two minutes off. As soon as he had done so, he returned to the school, hoping to catch Taka before she took off.

Well, he'd seen her. But so far that was as much as he'd managed.

He always forgot how fast she'd gotten, over the years. There'd been a time, when they were younger, when he could easily outrun her (she would always say that was because he was so good at running away--Haha, Taka). But as they'd aged, each pursuing their separate interests, she'd slowly begun to outpace him.

Until now, when he was running at an all-out sprint and she'd still managed to pull out of sight.

"God damn it," he repeated aloud. He wasn't out of breath, though he was beginning to feel a bit of the burn at the base of his lungs.

What was sending him after Taka? Shouldn't he have been waiting on Kotohiki? What if someone...

No. No no no. Keep acting, if only to avoid the shock. If only to avoid the thoughts.

Shu's dead.

With a sharp gasp he accelerated, embers dancing within his thighs. He narrowed his gaze, did not allow any conscious thought to cross the static of his mind, and....

Stopped.

He had reached a relatively open area, and there was no one in sight. A little ways away was away was the distintive Honden of a Shinto shrine. Hiroki paused, examining it, and began to move forwards.

Wait.

Taka might be in there; then again, she might not. Fast as she was, she might have made it here ahead of others. Then again, they hadn't taken the most direct route...

There could be someone in there. Someone armed.

Hiroki had yet to look at his weapon, so before following Takako he bent over and opened his bag. He stared for a moment; the bag contained...

A sickle.

He lifted it out, frowning. He didn't like this; he would have preferred something a bit less sharp. If he swung this with any force whatsoever, it would easily...easily...

He closed his eyes, and images of bullets spattered Shuuya's blood filled the darkness of his eyelids.

People have guns. You gonna let Taka end up like that?

He lifted his head and tightened his grip. Before advancing any further, he took a few experimental swings with the sickle. Balance was a little off, due to the curve of the blade...a downwards slash would be most devastating, though he was fairly strong...

He didn't have time to familiarize himself with it now. It was enough to know what he could do with it.

Letting the weapon fall naturally at an oblique angle to his side, Sugi shouldered the pack and made his way cautiously up towards the shrine. There were figures, he realized, by the entrance--two girls (he could tell by their outlines) whom he hadn't seen.

He didn't hesitate. He would have time to run, if he needed it. "Taka?" he called.

Noriko visibly relaxed once Takako lowered her weapon, not pointing at her anymore. As the other girl looked around the small wooden structure, Noriko closed her eyes, letting out a breath she didn't realize she had been holding. Despite her fierce nature, and sometime intimidating look, Noriko felt deep down that she would be safe with Takako. Opening her eyes when Takako asked her a question, she responded.

"I'm fine. I haven't run into anyone yet. Er... present company excluded" she said with a small nervous laugh.

Noriko then instinctively turned her head as she heard what sounded like footsteps up the stone steps to the shrine. Once again gripping her weapon, her mind started thinking rapidly. What if someone tries to attack? Well, we both have guns, so I guess we'll be safe... but I don't know if I can use this... I don't think I can hurt anyone... oh, please don't be a bad person...

Whoever it was that was coming had called out for Takako. Recognizing the low, steady voice, Noriko once again relaxed. Hiroki wouldn't hurt them. He was safe. After all, he was Shuya's friend... This was too much for her to handle. Noriko hung her head, part cause she was starting to get tired, and part to stop herself from crying again.

Noriko laughed. Takako didn't even crack a smirk. "Yeah," she said, rubbing her hands together. "Hasn't been that long I suppose."

That was when Takako heard her own name called.. well her own nick name at least. Her hand went to the gun placed around her waist, pulling it out cautiously. Only one person called her Taka. She turned her head to look at Hiroki Sugimura, the only person she would ever consider a friend at her school and the only person she knew she could trust. A faint smile crossed her pale lips as headed for him.

"I was going to hug you on my way out and slip a note into your collar," she said suddenly without any context. "In that classroom. I was worried I would never see you again." She hugged him, oblivious to the sickle at his side. "I'm glad I was wrong."

She let go of him. Her smile disappeared, quickly replaced by her usual indifferent expression. Takako turned and motioned to the girl in the distance. "She was here before I got here. She says she isn't planning to kill anyone. She said this as though it should be common knowledge. She looked back to Takako. "And I suppose you aren't either. You're easier to read than a picture book." Takako was clearly joking with Hiroki, but she didn't laugh. She just stared at Hiroki as she always did.

"A hug?" he muttered, arching his thick eyebrows. "A gesture of affection, Taka? Careful, there, I might think you actually-"

He was cut off, as she threw her arms around his neck. He hesitated, uncertain of what to do (though this was in no small measure a result of the sickle at his side--how did one hug with a sickle? It was very sharp).

Hell with it.

He dropped it and wrapped his arms around her. "It's always been hard to keep up with you," he said. "Be glad I'm persistent."

They parted. She told him Noriko wasn't playing, and then...

"And I suppose you aren't either. You're easier to read than a picture book."

He swallowed and tapped his nose, grinning ruefully. "Y-yeah, well," he manged, not looking at her. He looked up to the starry sky, frowning. "We're not playing," he announced abruptly. He didn't ask Taka if she was going to or not, though she'd said nothing about her own feelings. He knew Taka too well for that.

They weren't playing.

That was enough for now.

"Nakagawa," he said abruptly. "Good to see you." He put his hands in front of his stomach and bowed. "Are-are you alright?" he asked. Thoughts of Shuuya...well.

Was she okay?

Noriko watched as the two friends embraced, wondering where her friends were. Yukie, Haruka, Satomi, Nobu.... she couldn't help but wonder how Nobu was holding up. After all, he had lost his best friend in the class room. No, from what she had seen, the two were more like brothers. How would it feel to have someone that close to you ripped away from you? How would Hiroki feel if he had found Takako too late, or vice versa? Sure, Noriko was pretty close to her friends, but she had never developed a bond with anyone that went that deep.

Taking a few moments before answering, Noriko responded to Hiroki "Ye-yes, I am fine, thank you. I guess you two must feel better, having found one another."

Noriko forced a smile. It was almost like it was one of her talents. She was always able to smile in difficult situations, often for the benefit of others rather than herself. A smile can go a long way in a situation like this. Of course, given the situation, she wouldn't be surprised if it didn't help that much.

Takako gave Hiroki a tiny shrug before turning back to Noriko. That's right, Noriko was friends with Shuuya wasn't she? Takako barely knew Noriko and she didn't particularly care who she hung out with, so she could be wrong. She pushed her hair out of her eyes. Takako was sad for Noriko. She couldn't really understand what she was going through or how she was feeling, but she felt some pity nontheless.

Noriko smiled at Takako, and while it felt appropriate to smile back Chigusa decided against it. She turned back to Hiroki, then down at her wrist. Damn it. She forgot that they took her watch too. She groaned.

"Damn it," she growled. "What time is it?"

Takako rolled her eyes, turning away from the others and down the steps leading away from the Shrine. Her eyes had adjusted to the darkness and she could see that no one else was coming their way. It seemed pointless to go wandering away from the little shack. Better shelter than anything else she had passed while running here, but it wasn't going to be enough. Too out in the open for her tastes at least. Takako took all of her opens into account. She thought for a very long moment. Then she spoke.

"That's all well and good Noriko," Takako said, using the girl's first name informally again, "but we need to worry about what we're going to do. The shrine looks okay for right now. Maybe until sunrise if we're lucky. However I think we should find some other form of shelter, one that isn't so open."

Now Takako was thinking about the game. How the three of them were going to survive, where to hide, who to trust. So far she had no answers and it was tearing her apart. She was weak. If she were alone then maybe she could just shrug all the responsibility away, but with Noriko and Hiroki around she would have to make decisions with them in mind. Her head burned as she thought, a hand to the side of the head.

"... Sugi." She turned to look at Hiroki. "What do you think we should do?"

"I guess you two must feel better, having found each other."

Sugi winced; unconscious or not, her words implied Shuuya, and a pan which was all too real slashed across his chest. Damn it, Shu.

Taka posed her question to him, however, and Sugi, frowning thoughtfully, examined their location, grateful for an excuse to distract himself. His first instinct was to demand why she was asking him, but he decided as he opened his mouth that this would be a bad idea; Taka had never been one to take much questioning, either of himself or her.

She thought they should stick it out until sunrise. It seemed a good decision; if they did so, it would make moving much easier, anyone trying to sneak up on them would be much more visible. No chance of surprise, really...

No chance of stealth.

"If we're going to move," Sugi said, still thinking. "We should move now." He found the Shinto Shrine a comforting place, but there were too many disadvantages. "Once the sun comes up we'll be much easier to spot. We have a few hours of night left, and we're much harder to see. If we want to hide ourselves away, now's the time to do it."

Noriko listened in on the conversation Takako and Hiroki were having. Hiroki suggested they move, and though Noriko agreed that moving at night would be best, she wasn't ready to move just then. However, she thought it would be best to listen to Hiroki. After all, he was one of the best people to have in this situation. Smart, athletic, knows how to fight. At this point all Noriko had was a gun, one she didn't even know if she would be willing to use. Pulling out the map, the young girl strained her eyes in the moonlight to get a look at it.

"If we do move," Noriko said quietly. "We have a few options for good cover. There's a clinic, a farm, and the residential district. That, or we can head into the forest. We might be able to find better cover there."

After that, Noriko would let Takako and Hiroki make the final decision. Whatever they came up with, Noriko would be more than happy to follow. At least with these two, she would feel somewhat safe. While she wasn't close to either one, it was better than being alone.

She hoped.

Chigusa looked away from the both of them, sighing softly. While Chigusa wasn't planning on leaving, not so soon at least, but Hiroki was right. If they were ever going to leave, it would have to be now. There would be less chance of them getting attacked suddenly if they kept moving. From a strategic standpoint it was the only option they could make. The thought of doing it however made her stomach weak. She closed her eyes, trying to keep her calm. Why was she getting such a bad feeling? It was the dread she felt. The fates of Hiroki and Noriko were in her hands now. If she fucked up majorly, at any time, it would be blood on her hands.

"Alright." Chigusa said bluntly, finally looking back at them. She pushed the gun back into her strap, slinging the back over her shoulder. "Get your stuff. We're going to get out and find some place to hide."

Chigusa rubbed at her eyes. Was she tired already? Whatever. She wasn't going to complain. So. a clinic, a farm, a residential district. What kind of island was this? People must have been stationed here for some reason. For what? The military? Chigusa shifted her weight from one to the other as she waited for the others to get ready. Her mind wandered, trying to think of anything other than the game. It was useless. She just gave up and sighed, content with just watching Hiroki.

"Ready?" Chigusa asked, crossing her arms. "I think we should head to the clinic. Might have supplies."

Sugi watched the gun in her hand, cocking his head to one side. Now that they seemed to be moving, his troubling thoughts were coming back to him. They weren't all about Shu, either. He'd found Taka; now there was only one person left.

Kotohiki...

How did he bring it up? How could he...?

What would Shuuya do?

He'd do it stupidly. Wait until we get there.

He smiled, though he felt his eyes suddenly moisten. Noble, of course. But always stupid.

"Let's go, then," Sugi answered, shouldering his sickle. "I'll lead, shall I?"

Noriko nodded as a decision was made. The clinic was on the other side of the island, so they probably wouldn't make it until the sun came up. Which also meant they would probably hear the first announcement on their way there. Noriko wondered if any of her classmates had died. While she hoped it wasn't the case, the distant echoing of gunshots just couldn't be ignored. People were playing, this was for certain. The young girl sighed, thinking again about Shuya. Had no one taken into consideration the sacrifice he had made? Noriko stood up, grabbing her pack as she did. The thought of people killing the people they spent most of their days with sickened her, but she wasn't about to just curl up and die. First however, they needed to move.

Her bag in one hand, revolver in the other, Noriko walked briskly past Hiroki and Takako, taking the stone steps as fast as her legs would take her. She concentrated on walking, knowing the other two would follow, and probably catch up, but she didn't care at that point. She just walked, almost as if she was trying to walk away from the feelings she had at the shrine just moments ago.
