((Katie Tanaka continued from This Too Will Pass))

"Howdy, y'all. It's only the four of you left now, so lemme give you the news on what's happened since last time."

Katie snapped out of her stupor.

She had been sitting out on the front porch of one of the houses, hand rested on her chin and her legs crossed. Katie had been lost in thought, and the announcement rudely interrupted her.

Jacqueline did indeed drown. Brian and Samuel were gone, too, having been shot by Rebecca. There seemed no more. Only four left now.

Katie could only feel numb at these news. It slid from one ear and into another, like liquid silver. Her eyes still tired, wary.

He started talking about Rebecca, comparing her to a dog. A rabid dog, who killed a rabbit. Katie made a small face at this.

It got worse when he started talking about her. And that's when Katie tensed up. Gee, rub it in her face some more, why don't you? Her hand dropped from her chin, and suddenly, she felt a tension coming up, as if she was going to start screaming then and there. How...

She suddenly stood up on the porch, and only gave a small, but very venomous look.

She felt like finding out who this was and punching him in the face repeatedly. She could almost imagine the blood flying off her fists as she kept punching some cowboy until it was barely recognizable as a human being. She was that angry.

Katie calmed down. Maybe it wasn't a good idea to get riled up about that.

He talked a bit about Leo, calling him "lucky" for being around three girls.

And finally, Renee.

Renee...?

Renee was still alive.

Katie wasn't sure how she felt about meeting her, especially when they and the other two were supposed to fight to death very soon. It even made her a little nervous about Leo. Who was to say either one of them would do something... you know? And that's not even going into Rebecca.

She wasn't even sure if she could go through with her plan and do it. Rebecca was a menace, certainly. But she could still remember Jacqueline, and how upset she was over her and Benny's plan to kill Simon, how she met him, how he felt threatened by Sycanus. It was like going through Jacqueline all over again. Rebecca would do something or something that happened would remind her that she used to be a normal girl.

And she didn't want that. She wanted to kill the murderer, not Rebecca, the drama technician who was one of her classmates.

The summaries stopped, and started with a mention of-

Did he just mention a train?

Now he was really mocking them. He could take them home if he wanted to, and now he was using a train, just like how he... yeah. Abducted them.

It was kind of funny really. Katie had always fantasized about fighting on a train like in an old Western. But here she was, about to fight on a train. This was it. The last stand-off. Just the four of them, and only one was supposed to make it.

Katie didn't know how to feel about that one either. If she had her way, there would be no killing involved, unless maybe of Rebecca.

Within a few minutes, a train had appeared on the tracks nearby, waiting for the four to get on. Katie could only sigh, as the doors opened for her and Leo.

This was it, then.

"C'mon Leo. Let's go."

She limped towards the open door, Benny's gun in hand. At that point, she had just realized she hadn't checked to see how many bullets were left inside it. And now was a bad time to realize that.

As she stepped inside, she felt something stir inside her.

It looked exactly like the train they had been on to begin with. She didn't even remember where they were supposed to be going at the time, but wherever it was, it was better than here.

Anywhere was better than here.

((Leo Raclaw continued from This Too Will Pass))

This was gonna be bad. It seemed obvious enough not to need thinking, but it was the only thing Leo had in mind when the announcement ended. Could it be any worse than the fire where he had to kill Holly? He really hoped it couldn't get worse than that, but any idiot familiar with history knew humans were capable of much worse than this.

He really wished he had the motivation to properly treat his wound, but it didn't seem to matter. He was going to die unless everyone else slipped on convenient banana peels on the train. Looking at the sword he sighed. The tip of the blade was in the ground as he listlessly bent it. Losing himself for a few moments he started when the train stopped in front of Katie and himself.

Following her onto the train he wondered if they were gonna be shipped back to civilization. Rebecca and himself would have to answer for their crimes, and Katie and Renee would have to live with this.

Kind of sad that was the best way for this to end, but c'est la vie.

Walking in a few paces Leo leaned against the car wall, looked at Katie, and said with a soft grin on his face,

"So, you think they kept the food cart for the ride home?"

(Renee Murphy continued from Still Red)

Cameo and Brian were dead, along with Sam. Predictably, Rebecca had killed Brian. There were only four left and Renee was surprised to find that she was one of them. The last four children from the Alderbrook Class of 2013.

Rebecca. No surprise there.

Katie and Leo were the other two.

Renee hadn't heard anything about Katie since she got there. From what the Sheriff said, Katie was trying to get rid of the bad guys. That was good. At least they had a common motive. Leo, though... Renee didn't know what to think. He killed Delilah and Holly, but Renee wasn't sure what to make of that. Still, she remembered seeing Delilah's dead eyes and hearing Sam's agonized cries. Leo caused that. Or maybe it was Delilah's fault all along?

She shook her head and shuddered. Renee wondered how she even got this far. The Sheriff answered that question, though, saying that she'd finally run out of people to hide behind.

"What's left, Ms. Murphy? Can you actually walk the walk and get out of here?"

Hah. I guess we'll find out soon enough, eh?

Renee stood idly by the tracks and waited for the train that the Sheriff said would come. It came into view in a couple of minutes. It was the same train that they were on. The same train that had been hijacked and where the whole class had been gassed. Naturally. What other train would he have been talking about?

The train stopped right in front of her, grinding to a halt as the wheels stopped chugging. A door flew open, awaiting Renee. She stared at the open door for quite a while, for no particular reason. Maybe she was just trying to hold the end off for a few more minutes. But she had a feeling that things were going to go sour no matter how long she waited. She drew a breath in.

"Well, now or never, right?" she said quietly. She climbed aboard, hoping to God that she wasn't just walking to her death. Sam wouldn't want that, after all. And he died protecting her. That must count for something now.

(Rebecca Clark continued from Blood Bargain)

Her attempts to whittle down the competition more had been in vain. She had found no one. All the buildings she had entered were empty. It was eerily quiet and she thought she even saw a tumbleweed go by. To top it all off, her leg still seemed to be trying to kill her, resulting in frequent stops to rest. Hell, if she had to run she was probably screwed.

So she'd be relying on her sawed off more than her body. Fine. She could deal with it. She was falling apart anyway, shot leg, shot hip, ripped earlobe, bruises all over. Yeah, she had to finish things soon, or she'd be the one ending, and she didn't get this much blood on her hands to die now.

But then the announcement came. Four left. One accident, two of her own kills. Apparently the others weren't so up on killing. Apparently she was like a rabid dog, which she found a bit confusing, why insult her when she did exactly what he had told the whole class to do? It was pretty assholish in her opinion. Maybe she'd save a shell or an arrow for him and teach him who the "rabid dog" was.

The others left had other jabs. Katie, one of her best friends, was alive, but apparently had failed at her goal. Leo was something of a threat with two kills, although compared to her eleven that was small, but he probably wasn't as beat up as her, so did that even out? It might. And then there was fucking Renee. Leg shooter. Apparently she had hid behind others the whole time. Huh, well she hadn't fought for the right to be there, so maybe she would just have to teach her what that wound felt like, the bruises, knowing that everyone wants to kill you...

No. She had to focus on survival, but if she got the chance...

She paid attention again. A train would be picking them up. She made her way to the nearest set of tracks and waited. The train soon arrived and she boarded. The quiver was over her shoulder and the shotgun was in her hands. Like it or not, this was the end.

The engine began roaring once more.

Katie felt herself grow more and more tense as she took everything in. The engine going around her, the outside whizzing past the window, the seats, everything.

It was almost surreal. With each second it reminded her of how she got here. How they got here. If she wanted to, she could probably find an approximate to where she was sitting when they... you know. She found herself remembering what she was doing then again. She barely even remembered anymore. Amelia?

She took a deep breath.

As she looked around her further, it seemed further as if the Sheriff was mocking them. "Here, we could easily let you escape, but we won't and instead will make you fight on the thing we abducted you on!" And that's what she hated. He was laughing at them, so much. Seriously, she hoped he got to feel the exact amount of pain each and everyone person had felt, very soon. Even if he didn't live before that happened, she hoped that he would suffer in hell, being licked by the flames and knowing how many people he caused pain, to cry, to die, to...

She exhaled.

She had to deal with Rebecca. Renee was fairly innocent, she was sure, but Rebecca? Rebecca had to be stopped. Her and the Sheriff.

And yet...

Katie couldn't allow herself to be sure again.

As she stood on the moving train, feeling it bump underneath her, Leo spoke.

Did they leave the food cart for the ride home?

Did they leave the food cart.

Food. Cart.

It was strangely grim. It would take only a miracle for more than one person to survive and make it home. And yet... food cart. She imagined fighting by throwing an open bag of Cheetos' Puffs at Rebecca, spilling orange powder all over her.

It was...

In spite of herself, Katie felt her lips curl into a smile, and then she laughed.

It had been the first time in a while since she found anything funny. Katie hadn't been sure if that was even possible. But in the face of danger, she laughed at food carts.

What a world.

Two times the train stopped. Presumably, that was for Rebecca and Renee. Any second now they'd show up. And then? She didn't know.

Hearing Katie laugh at his joke startled him into laughing along. It had felt like so long since he had heard it, or even had it himself, but it felt so good. When he finally stopped giggling he looked at the ground and sighed. Not knowing what to say he took a look at both ends of the car.

Since Rebecca and Renee were both on life was likely going back to Hell at any time.

Keeping the smile on his face Leo did the only thing he could think to do, and waited for it. In the forms gunpowder screams, or a Molotov's blood burning everyone alive.

All he could hope that he died quickly if at all, but thoughts of death still unnerved him and made him shift. As if trying to find a comfortable place in his thoughts to stay, but there seemed to be no such place.

Trying to lean more into the wall Leo slowly went from waiting for the end to almost begging it to just burst in already.

Renee entered the train with as much caution as possible. She raised her MP5 into a steady position in front of her, so she could easily train the gun on anything in case something happened. The last thing she needed now was to get killed as soon as she got on the train. After checking that the car she was on didn't have any people in it, she allowed herself to relax a little and take a seat.

The door had shut after her and the train continued to chug. It stopped only once in its route around the Ghost Town, which meant that two others had already been on the train before Renee. Now, all four of them were onboard. The only question at this point was, when was the shooting and the killing going to start?

She stared out the window for a few moments, just watching the surroundings blur past.

She sighed and rubbed her forehead. What she had to now was find Katie. She had a message to give to her after all. Amelia couldn't give the message herself, so Renee would have to do it for her.

She stood up and opened the door to the next car. Empty. Renee had the brief thought to scroung around for supplies, but she kicked that aside. This was the grand finale, now. No more need for scavenging or looting bodies.

Yeah, just killing. Or did you forget that Rebecca and Leo were on this train, too?

Renee kicked that thought aside, too.

Renee held her gun close to her, almost hugging it. She opened the door to next car and pointed her gun through it, prepared to shoot if it was anyone hostile.

Katie and Leo were behind the door.

Oh.

This was uncomfortable. Still, Renee wasn't exactly sure of their current situation, so she had to be cautious at the very least.

"Katie, Leo," Renee breathed out, still somewhat aiming the gun, but not at anyone in particular. She didn't know what to say. Usually, she'd have some idea of what to say, but she didn't want a repeat of what happened with Sam in the saloon. He was full of suspicion and distrust at the time. She could feel it. But he still died for her.

"Um... what's up?"

Another stupid line courtesy of Renee Murphy. I swear this turned into a gag.

The train hadn't stopped again after picking her up. So everyone had already been on when she got there. The idea of heading through the train and finishing off her few remaining classmates was one idea, but in the end, another jolt of pain from her injured leg made sitting on one of the nearby bunks a better option.

The train was familiar of course. Not only was it the train they had been on before all this bullshit went down, but it was also where she had fought off psycho bitch Lena. Not this car though. There weren't any signs of the bloodstains that were no doubt in the carpet from her necessary response with her arrows.

She sat there waiting for her leg to ease up so she could move on. The sawed off shotgun was in her grip. If anyone came in she would fire. There was no sense in letting one of them get the best of her now. Just because her leg was torturing her didn't mean she was going to lay down and die.

She had come too far for that.

Leo began to laugh with her, and Katie felt good.

It was strange that either of them could laugh after so long. Really, it was. Katie didn't know how it was possible, but there it was. Laughter.

After they petered down, a few more beats. The carriage was silent for a moment, and although the atmosphere was a bit more relaxed, what was going to happen next? Was Renee going to try to kill her? Was Rebecca going to end up finishing the rest of them off? Was Leo going to betray her?

Katie didn't know the answer to that.

They might as well enjoy the silence for a little bit. It was just the two of them, and silence. Just what she needed. Silence.

And like all almost relaxing moments, it came to an end abruptly.

The door opened, and the first thing Katie noticed was a gun.

Her almost calm mood was replaced by the familiar sense of terror. But she had to look. Her eyes traced from the gun, to the wielder's arm, to her face, and...

"Renee."

She looked Renee straight in the eyes, feeling herself swallow some air.

She didn't know how to reply to that question. She just... couldn't.

Katie didn't know if Renee was the same. She didn't know if she was just nervous, or scared, or was planning on killing them both. She felt her hand grip the gun in her hand, her eyes continuing to examine Renee. She wasn't sure of what to feel right now. She just didn't know.

Finally, she came to an answer.

"Exactly what you'd expect", she replied, her voice lower than it would have been a few days ago.

She just didn't know.

She just didn't.

How long had it been since laughter was possible for the kids from Alderbrook High School? This was actually the first time anyone had done so since he had woken up. His smile became less and less of a lie the more he concentrated on that memory.

The view outside was so familiar to traveling in a car on the highway. He could faintly hear the radio playing, and feel his family surrounding him. He relaxed a bit in the delusion.

Renee's entrance broke the silence, and his denial of the situation. Having jumped in a panic he hoped that nobody noticed, and he played it as pushing himself off the wall to join the conversation. Sighing as he did so, but he wasn't sure why.

After Katie's answer to Renee's idiotic attempt at conversation Leo tried to think of something to say to jab at it, but was too tired to try.

A shrug in agreement would have to do while he rolled his eyes behind closed lids.

"Right," Renee said. Exactly what she'd expect. Of course. What else could there have been?

Renee's eyes wandered over to Leo, whose simple shrug seemed to show nothing but disdainful indifference. Renee wondered what his deal was, but she supposed that everyone was allowed to act a little disdainful at this point. Even Rebecca was disdainful, at Renee especially.

Renee's gun arm lowered slightly, forcing herself to remain calm. The two didn't seem to be hostile, didn't seem to be all that interested in killing her. Still, it'd be so easy. So easy to just shoot both of them where they stood, then kill Rebecca when she showed up, too. But Renee couldn't think like that anymore, not after Brian and Vivian. Not after Sam.

Renee leaned her left side against the wall and looked over at Katie. "Anyway, good thing I ran into you. There's something I've got to tell you."

"I ran into Amelia earlier and she told me she had a message for you," she said. "I was supposed to tell it to Rebecca, too, but last time I saw her, she wasn't exactly in a listening mood." Renee laughed humorlessly.

Rubbing her forehead with the back of her left hand, she said, "Before she died, she said that she was sorry. She said that she wanted to say thanks for everything you had done for her."

Renee pushed herself off the wall and stood up straight. "She said she'll miss you."

Then, she threw herself off a cliff. God, is that what this place had reduced ourselves to doing? None of this stuff was even supposed to happen in the first place. And now with only four of us left, how desperate would those that were left get? Rebecca had crossed that line far before any of us did, save for Simon Mattheson.

Renee's eyes drifted between Katie and Leo, gripping the handle of Julia's MP5 just a little tighter. There was more bloodshed to come, and Renee wasn't sure what was going to happen next and to who it would happen to. Best be prepared for anything.

Sitting wasn't what she wanted to do. Her leg was killing her yes, but sitting didn't help. That gave her time to think. Thinking wasn't what she needed. Action was what she needed. Thinking just left her to remember what she had done to get for, remember her wounds and struggles and arrows sticking out of people's chests and necks. It reminded what would happen if she got home. Would they already know how many she killed? Could she lie her way out of it? Could she even hold that in?

Focus.

She tried to breathe more calmly, but she was breathing fast now. What would be waiting at home, the police, a lynch mob, angry parents? Would she have to go home? Or could she just run away to somewhere new and never have to confront people who knew her before? Run away and become some techie for a tiny theater. The thought had crossed her mind before. She had no idea what she was doing with life before, and doing something she had enjoyed with her friends had made some sense. She'd ultimately said no though and now she was confronted with the idea of what would she do with her life if she made it out?

Lynch mob, an institution, fucking prison...

No, holding a spotlight, community theater. She had to focus on that. It didn't matter that she hadn't been sure what she'd be doing before. That was the plan now, run a spotlight, try to go to some parties when she was older. Better than high school parties where her friends would wind up puking and then fall asleep on the floor. She would miss that though, miss my friends, but no that didn't matter! If she failed she wouldn't have any friends left anyway. Just someone, probably bitchy Renee, would get out after filling other people, herself and Katie, full of lead.

Katie, no hurting friends. She would try not to but if she had to-if she had to, could she really? Fuck, she had done it to ten other people, that had to be worth something, otherwise I'm useless and should never have started. Useless. She didn't want to be useless. She had felt that way at home, one smart sister and the other an athlete, and her, who couldn't do much of anything. Killing. Not the point.

Her stomach was churning, her breath coming in quick gasps. Her leg was still killing, but not as much as her head. She stumbled to her feet, the leg screaming pain at her as she put weight on her. No, no, I have to finish, no! One step. Another. Slow steps. Pathetic limp. The pain was still there but she was up, not falling. Her hands balled into fists around the shotgun. Keep going, not long, spotlight in a theater.

She finally got to the door to the next car. She breathed hard, ignoring her agony. She pushed the door open, saw the carpeted area of the next room. Empty, but they couldn't all be.

I only wish...

Tension. Awkwardness.

Of course there would be. Katie briefly glanced at Leo, who seemed to shrug, and back at Renee. So tense. Damn it. This was another reason why she hated the Sheriff. If this had been before, it would have been less awkward and tense. But now that they were being forced to kill each other, any way she could have talked to either Leo or Renee was...

Gone.

It was a cliche to say this, but she didn't really know either of them too well anymore. Heck, she didn't know herself that well anymore.

And that was one of the many parts that sucked.

Katie found it easy to interact with her classmates. But not anymore.

Renee opened her mouth.

There was something she wanted to tell her. Something from Amelia. Something Amelia wanted her and Rebecca to know.

Katie listened.

Sorry. Thank you. I'll miss you.

Katie didn't know what to say. Once again, she felt herself getting teary-eyed again. Her mouth slightly moved, in the attempt to find the words. But the tears kept trying to push their way out.

"R-renee..."

She wanted to just drop her gun and hug her right there. She wished for a group hug. But she knew that wasn't going to happen. Rebecca was probably right around the corner, and probably not a hugging type. She just... didn't know anymore.

This was going to be over soon no matter what, wasn't it?

Still nothing to say as the two talked. He didn't have anyone to meet on the train, or messages to carry on. Everyone had died like he was going to. Standing became more and more laboring than he decided it was worth. After soaking in the atmosphere as long as he could Leo slowly sat back down. This wasn't a discussion he belonged in, and Renee had such an upper hand it wasn't even worth it to Leo to consider fighting back. I mind as well go out sitting on my ass.

Laying the sword on the floor he watched the girls talk to see of anything interesting happened. A few moments later he decided that Roy didn't die so Leo could loaf into the afterlife with indifference, so after collecting his thoughts Leo spoke up,

"So what do we do about this Rebecca chick?" She was the one who was probably going to start killing them out the the final four (if what the Sheriff said had been true), so they should find a way to take her out first. He looked at Katie for her response as Renee was free to decide to help them or not.

Katie's reaction was to be expected.

Renee had to admit. She had wanted to see something like this for a while. Real human emotion, not blinded anger or pain or hatred or some other such bullshit like that. Not Brian's obsessiveness or Julia's close-mindedness or Sam's utter pain at the thought of Delilah's death.

Just sadness. A longing for the way things used to be. Not getting caught up in all of this.

The only other person she'd seen this way was Amelia herself. And even then, it was only because of paranoia caused by having killed Tania.

Renee wanted to cry again, then, too. But, she had to hold it back. She'd have to be strong now. Eyes were still red after all, maybe there weren't even enough tears at that point. Pushed them all out by that point.

After a while, Leo posed the important question. Renee took in some air, before deciding to answer the question.

"Rebecca's going to want to kill us," she said. "Three of us will end up dying. And I'd prefer that the last one left wasn't a murderer." Renee resisted the urge to shoot Leo a look, at her mention of "murderer".

Renee leaned against the wall again. "Still, there's not much we can do, now. Regardless of whether or not we kill Rebecca, we are going to have to decide who lives and who dies. I don't think any of us want that responsibility, but I suppose that there is the matter of justice. Rebecca's wronged us in a lot of ways. Wronged everyone, killed too many of us." Renee felt like she was rambling, and at the point she probably was. Normally, she'd care, but this wasn't exactly normally.

"I suggest we ambush Rebecca. I don't know if she'll fall for it, but that's the best I've got. Maybe hide out here, wait for her to come. And she will, eventually." Renee drew out a prolonged breath, one that she didn't even know she was holding in. Renee stood up straight and held the MP5 with both of her hands, briefly testing its weight for a second. She had a feeling she'd be needing it soon.

Very, very soon.
